For more details got to the Ultimate 12th Gen Ultimate PC Build Contest! thread

A Micro Center online resource that helps you select all the necessary components to build the perfect PC

    PC Builder: https://www.microcenter.com/site/content/custom-pc-builder-intel.aspx

Some background of today's AMA experts

    • Michael Weiler (Micro Center): I started with Micro Center as a store Customer Service Rep in Columbus, Ohio while attending The Ohio State University. I worked several different roles in store as well as at the corporate office and now manage the Case, Power Supply and Cooling categories. I am passionate for designing new products for Micro Center and building Gaming PCs, probably more so than actually gaming on them.
    • Juan Jose aka JJ Guerrero (ASUS): Technical Product Marketing Manager. I have been with ASUS for 15 years. My primary role has been a part of the ASUS marketing team, I currently focus on community engagement. You will find me here on Reddit and in our PCDIY Facebook Group. In addition, I pride myself on engagement with our passionate ASUS hardware enthusiasts (the best hardware fans in the industry). I enjoy RTS, ARPG/RPG, Platformers, and simulations, most along with games that offer a single-player narrative. I have an all ROG Z590 Gaming PC, I also love dogs.
    • Jason Xie (Intel): I am a Technical Marketing Engineer for Gaming and Enthusiast Desktops. I joined Intel in 2015 working on Optane SSD's before it was even called Optane Technology. I've been building PCs since high school and definitely messed up the first build! PC gaming is near and dear to my heart ranging from Battlefield 1942, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare to League of Legends for over 10 years! Now I'm here helping the team launch our desktop CPUs. Currently rocking a Core i9-11900K system with an RTX 3080.
    • Alejandro (Lex) Hoyos (Intel): I joined Intel in 2005 as an Analog Electrical Engineer worked on SATA, PCIE and DMI interfaces for the PCH. In 2011 I move over to technical marketing and now I am Tech Evangelist and Community manager. I spend most of 15 years at work building systems for gaming events, shows, friends and family. My Current gaming rig is a Core i9 10900K with a 2080Ti. I hang around CoD Warzone and try not to spawn too much.

For TIPS and TRICKS before building a PC

    • PURPOSE: Have an idea what the PCs primary usage will be. Gaming, video production, work from home, etc. Knowing this will give you an idea what critical components like the GPU, motherboard and CPU you will need.
    • COMPATIBILITY: ALWAYS make 100% certain your parts are all fully compatible with one another. Micro Center's online configurator is a perfect place to get this help at NO charge.
    • EDUCATION: There are literally thousands of videos on YouTube that provide complete walk-throughs on building a PC. Try searching "how to build a PC" and include a couple of the primary components in the search criteria like your Motherboard. You might be lucky and find a video where they are building almost the exact same PC as you.
    • THE CASE IS YOUR SPACE: Cases are usually a relatively low percentage of your build budget. Make sure to invest in one that gives you all off the room necessary to add the components you desire as well as one that will have space for all of the connectors you plan to include (HDMI, USB-C, etc)
    • EXPERT LEVEL NEEDS: Are you planning to overclock? Are you putting a high-power Graphics Processor in the system? These (and other) factors and others can affect your power supply needs, your cooling requirements and others (which again, takes us back to which CASE to use!)
    • WORKSPACE: It is always ideal to give yourself plenty of space to work with good lighting. Also important to ensure the workspace (and your hands) remain clean and static-free during assembly. Dirt and/or static electricity can damage or even destroy certain sensitive components.
    • IT TAKES A SOFT TOUCH: Remember to always go slow and be patient! These are sophisticated and delicate components that can easily become damaged if proper care isn't taken. Just ask someone who has bent the pins on their brand-new CPU!

Now it's time to bring your specific questions to the experts, Let's get started!

Did I make the Right Moves In Upgrading rather then Prebuilt?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 09:27 AM PDT

I'm currently upgrading my old PC to modernize it and take the place of my console/next gen. Im really looking to play FPS's like Halo, Battlefield, MW, and really any more modern games to run them buttery smooth. I felt strong in my decision at time of purchase but now I'm second guessing myself. If this isn't the correct format I will delete it.

DOA card - No manufacture warrenty and Newegg refuses to return

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 01:49 PM PDT

    Long post/rant.

TLDR: My GPU is DOA and Newegg says it has no manufacturer warranty nor they will return it because it's out of the return window.

I'm in the process of building my gaming PC, I was initially planning on getting an RTX 3060 ti but found this RTX 3080 EAGLE OC 10G (rev. 2.0) on Newegg for 700$ a while back ,it was bundled with a mobo so I bought it even though it hurt my budget I will wait and save up again for the other components

Yesterday I finally bought my last component (PSU) from a local store here, assembled the PC and when I pressed the power button there's no signal, the GPU was running but no signal at all, I thought maybe it's the PSU or the power cables, I checked and made sure it's receiving sufficient power, even replaced my PSU with a higher model (EVGA Supernova 850w gold), I installed the GPU on a friends PC and still there's no signal, installed her GPU on my PC and it posted fine, so obviously my GPU is faulty.

I contact newegg and they say it's out of their return window, and the card has no manufacturer warranty !

What am I supposed to do now?

Is it time for a new PSU?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 06:55 AM PDT

I've made a few posts on this topic before. But while I'm playing warzone, after some time my game either freezes, crashes to desktop or I get a black screen and I just restart my pc. I used to not be able to start the game at all but now it works. But after a while or so, one of the 3 things I listed happen.

I've ruled out a few things, such as drivers, temps, disabling background apps, setting different priority's, disabling overlay and vsync.

    My specs are:

GPU: GeForce 3060 CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x PSU: Bequiet pure power 11 Gold 600W RAM: 16GB MB: Asus Rog B550-F Gaming SSD: 1TB

If anyone may know a possible solution, or if I should get a new power supply, please let me know. Thanks

10GB RTX 3080 (not reference design)?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 11:14 AM PDT

What does not reference design mean? I can get this thats only 1 left in stock. Is it the same as these other asus and gigabyte etc 3080? Or is it something i shouldnt get? As i am looking for a 3080 but that last part i have no idea what it means.

Is there any advantage getting a pack of 2x8GB Ram vs buying two 8gb of the same model separately?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:14 PM PDT

Will run it in dual channel. My Google-fu is kinda weak on this one. Separate packaging would save me ~25USD so I need to know if it's worth it.

Edit: Yes I do know it'll work fine , I was just wondering if there were any performance boosts to justify getting the 25$ more option. Edit 2: Apparently not.

    Something is failing

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 05:42 AM PDT

Just got my PC, all parts except the GPU are are 3 weeks old (GPU is a month or 2 old now). Whenever i try to play a game, the monitor loses signal. I looked it up and saw almost the same question asked but that was 3 years ago, now i would think people would know more and upgraded parts would run better. Anyway, the only way to fix it is to restart my PC. This only happens in games and never when i'm browsing anything or on twitch. I really do need help with this i hope anyone here knows what happened.

    Budget expectations

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:17 PM PDT

I told my 14-year-old son that if he learns to build his own computer I'll buy him the parts. He asked me for a budget, and I didn't have an answer. I have no idea what's reasonable.

He's not a hardcore gamer, but he will probably use it mostly for games. Bed wars, Minecraft, portal, stuff like that. He'll likely use it for school as well but that's secondary usage.

I have $1,500 in my mind. Is that a reasonable place to start? Too much? Too little?

My goal is to help my kids feel enabled to understand the technology that they use. I really hope my son will better understand how computers work if he has to build his own. Any input would be appreciated.

Edit: Thank you all so much for the help. I was assuming monitor and peripherals would be included the budget, and after some further discussions with my son, he DOES want to do more, but our current machines don't allow him to play the games he wants. So upgrading capabilities are important to the build. I also appreciate that the market is sucky right now, but I think we may move forward in any case.

Sounds like I can pull back a little on the budget, but that its close. Again, thank you all!

    Not sure what's going on.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 01:34 PM PDT

    PC specs:

    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 1600 w/ stock cooler

    • MoBo: AM4 Biostar B350GT3

    • RAM: Adata XPG Gammix D30 2666 32GB (4 x 8GB)

    • GPU: Asus GeForce RTX 3060Ti Dual OC Edition

    • PSU: Corsair CX650

    • Storage: 2x 1TB HDD, 1x 512GB 2.5' SSD, 1x 1TB NVMe SSD

    • Mouse: Redragon Perdition M901

    • Keyboard: Redragon Harpe K503RGB

    • Other: 5x Red LED case fans.

    Problem:

Hey everyone. So, I need your help with something.

I had the above configuration for ~6 months. Last night there was a pretty big storm which led to a power outage in my neighborhood while the PC was still in use. As I tried to turn it on this morning something strange happened (and is still happening, since I don't know how to fix it).

Everything seems to turn on. The CPU and case fans turn on and spin, the led strip (the purple line thing) on the GPU also turns on, the red LED on the MoBo also turns on... but all my peripherals "don't" work (no RGB, no LED, etc.).

Also the monitor still works as far as I know (I can see the white LED on), but there nothing showing on the screen.

Feels like my PC is a walking zombie, it's kinda alive but not really.

    What I've tried so far:

    • Checked to see if my peripherals were toasted, but all of them worked on my laptop (couldn't check the monitor, but like I said it does turn on);

    • Tested all USB ports I was using;

    • Removed the CMOS battery for ~2 minutes and put it back;

    • Used 1x ram stick at a time on slot 1/a;

    • Tested the second BIOS (MoBo has a BIOS switch);

    • Tested without GPU as a last-ditch effort.

    Aditional info:

    • I also thought my USB ports were gone. So I grabbed my smartwatch recharger and plugged it in one of the exact ports I was using. It did work, as I could see my watch recharging. I also tried my smartphone and the same thing happened (but shows a 'slow charging' message).

So, what you guys think? Is this a motherboard problem? A PSU problem? Or maybe the CPU?

EDIT: So I found out the problem! Check out my comment.

    Secret Santa PC Building recommendations

My family does Secret Santa every year and we've started using a site to put down some cheap $15-35 gift ideas for when we draw names. I was thinking of adding some kit of screws/standoffs...etc which I always seem to be running out of. Why can't I get into the bios?

(If anything else is needed please ask)

Everything lights up, turns on, starts spinning and posts but when I spam delete as everyone on YouTube says it doesn't enter the bios. Idk if it matters what keyboard I am using but I was using a Logitech wireless one (idk the full name sry), it's quite cheap and uses a dongle.

    Windows 11 CPU Requirements | Throttle/Bottleneck Questions | Overall Build Questions <3

Howdy Reddit! I've built this pc about 4-5 years ago when in high school and recently upgraded my GPU. I forgot most of what I knew in terms of building so sorry for the silly questions. Here's my current build (some of the memory might not be 100% but the stats of the parts should be correct)

I have some inquiries. -Is it possible for my mobo to throttle my CPU? If so, does my mobo throttle performance?

-Windows says I can't upgrade to windows 11 because I need to enable secure boot, tmp 2 must be supported, and my processor isn't supported. I see that Windows 11 needs an 8th gen CPU and I apparently just have a 6th gen. Do I need to get an 8th gen pcu just to upgrade windows?

-Another thing is that overall my computer is performing worse and worse. When I purchased a 2060 a couple of months ago, there was next to no improvement from the 1060 I had, maybe even slower. -Is my cpu bottlenecking the GPU, or do I just need better ram? -Overall, why has my performance is decreased and lackluster, I assume by my parts I should be able to play lesser games like csgo or valorant on high settings with good fps

I'll take any and all guidance, thank you all for reading and sorry It's a sloppy question. I feel like I used to know about this stuff, but I clearly don't and want to have a better understanding.

    AMD Ryzen 5 5600G vs 5600X + spare GPU

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 06:15 AM PDT

My old GPU just died, I don't have a spare one, and my CPU doesn't have integrated graphics, so I can't use my PC at all.

While I'm deciding if I want to make a whole new build (here if you're interested, hope it's not considered spam) I'm wondering if it's better to buy a new CPU with integrated graphics or instead one without them plus a cheap spare GPU just to keep the PC running when the main GPU dies again.

In my case, as the title says, I was thinking about the Ryzen 5 5600 X and the G, where the X should be more powerful but it costs more per se and I would still need to get a spare GPU in case things go wrong again. Actually, the supposed difference in performance between the X and the G plus the fact that the X doesn't even have integrated graphics does really justify around 40€ of difference in price plus the cost of a spare GPU?

Do you have any other suggestion?

Asus ROG Strix B450-F gaming ii + Ryzen 5700G usable PCIE slots

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 07:42 AM PDT

    Hey,

I recently built this setup with:

-Asus ROG Strix B450-F gaming ii

    -Ryzen 7 5700G

    -GTX1070ti (old gpu)

I bought two nvme PCIE M.2 SSD's without checking the motherboard/APU configurations, that was a mistake.

I have the other m.2 running in the M.2_2 slot, as the M.2_1 slot is disabled with an APU. GPU is running in the PCIE16_1 slot in 8x mode I think. If I read the manual correctly, is the PCIEX16_3 slot still available to use in 4x mode so I can use an PCIE adapter and put my other m.2 there?

Pc won't post after ram upgrade

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 12:12 PM PDT

Hello i had this pc built from some time now and wanted to upgrade.

First i'm sorry if my english is worse than a preschool, I'm from baguette.

    Here're the working specs :

    Mobo : https://rog.asus.com/fr/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-b365-f-gaming-model/

    Processor : I5 8500

    Ram : 2*8 https://www.kfa2.com/kfa2/ram/kfa2-hof-ddr4-3200.html

    GPU : Gtx 1050

    PSU : Bequiet 550W

Storage : 1to ssd from crucial

It suits my needs, i mostly use it as a plex/share/minecraft server, and i have a laptop for work.

I wanted to add more ram, so i checked on asus QVL here https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/ROG_STRIX_B365-F_GAMING/ROG_STRIX_B365-F_GAMING_Memory.pdf and went for https://www.corsair.com/fr/fr/Cat%C3%A9gories/Produits/M%C3%A9moire/VENGEANCE-LPX/p/CMK32GX4M2A2666C16 to replace the existing one.

With 1 or 2 sticks (in slots A2-B2) the DRAM led is stuck on and the computer won't post.

    pic here : https://imgur.com/09qDjcj

I tried to clear cmos (with a screwdriver and by removing the battery)

The bios is already the latest to date (v2208)

    Tried juggling with the sticks...

    Tried only one.

They're properly seated (i think), at least i heard clicks.

Tried to set frequency to 2133mhz and voltage to 1.2v in bios with no luck.

I don't have another computer nearby to try the ram on sadly.

It's unlikely but still possible that they're dead on arrival ...

    Or maybe static electricity ?

    Any ideas ?

Not sure what to do? Upgrade my graphics card or wait.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 10:19 AM PDT

So basically the question is in the title basically my computer has a 2060 in it, now I am not sure if the whole exodus of computer hardware prices has settle but I was wondering should I wait or upgrade to the next gen nvidia cards. It's doing well but it's more for when the latest games come out.
