Using your own router - ISP threatening me

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 05:45 AM PST

Hi, I'm looking to start using my own router rather than the one provided by the ISP, however now they're threatening me that if I use it, it can cause a fault on the line and I'd be liable for call out charges for an engineer.

I've already asked for them to point this out in their terms and conditions, but is it even possible for a router to cause a line fault?

    Thanks

Help with wifi: local vs. internet

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 07:32 PM PST

    Hi,

So I'm having a bit of a weird issue and I need some help on how I can fix it. I've noticed that my laptop's internet is not stable, so ran a few tests (iperf 3 and openspeedtest standalone) and the numbers are around 700mbps for both tests. However, if I run speed test websites (speedtest.net, the built-in google one, etc) the speed hovers around 60mbps and uploads sometimes fail. The situation is a bit worse on my iPad and it is basically limited to 30mbps (m1 iPad pro, which should support wifi 5&6)

If I run the same external speed tests on my PC or my laptop using an ethernet cable, I get download speeds of around 470mbps (my internet plan is 400mbps), and repeating the test does not change download and upload numbers. What is wrong? My wireless router is ARRIS SURFboard SBG7400AC2.

Need help with routers and modems

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 08:40 PM PST

I generally know my way around tech but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to routers and modems, probably because I don't own the house and pay the bills. Anyways, I wanted to buy a new router and modem for my parents because we have a 500Mb/s plan with WOW and wired connection is only giving us like 200-300Mb/s (even directly connecnting pc to modem )and wireless is giving us around 70-90 Mb/s. I called my ISP and they said we do have 500 but it says it's 200 because each device is sharing the 500 (what?) Lol but yeah.

What do you guys suggest I do/buy?

My 5GHz router advertised speed is around 800mbps. I'm getting like 1/8 of the speed

    Question about cat5 wiring

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 08:31 PM PST

    Hello,

I had a friend while gaming on Xbox last night tell me he has Ziply Fiber Optics internet and loves in. I checked online, and submitted the address for my apartment complex, and it said service was available. I know these apartments haven't really been touched, and the last time they did any type of maintenance "overhaul" was maybe 2014? I highly doubt any changes to wiring was completed.

I called an agent today and informed them of this, and she seemed confident there was a strong possibility I was cat5 ready but might have been assuming that based on thinking in 2014 wiring was changed.

I want this internet and went ahead on her assumption that I could set it up as she said her system indicated the address showed as ready for service. She said that for her apartment, all the tech had to do was put a new wall plate on where her coax plate was and she was ready, and my friend said even his install took about 20 mins but he lives in a house. My concern is that a) the wires in my wall are not cat5 wires, but I am so dumb with this I don't even know what I am talking about, is there a way to know this? And b) I don't want to worry about them removing the coax connection that sticks out the wall as I am not allowed to make any modifications really to my apartment, so my plan was, can I pre-purchase a wall plate with a coax and a cat5 connector?

I saw there is this device called a MoCA adapter, would this work for a gigabit connection for fiber optics if running off of a coax connection? If it works but with a performance downgrade, what type of downgrade should I expect?

Thank you so much in advance for any help here, I'm a completely dummy with this type of stuff so any advice and guidance is much appreciated.

Help with buying my own router and modem

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 12:22 PM PST

Hey everyone, I am buying a new home and want to get my own router and modem to save some money in the long run. I already bought a SURFboard SB8200 for my modem, but there are so many more routers and they seem more complex than the modems.

Does anyone know if this router from Amazon would be a good one for at least a few years?

    Looking into NVR and Cameras

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 01:48 PM PST

Looking at what the group uses for CCTV at home, and even what NVR software/hardware you all use. I imagine IP Cameras are better than WiFi for many reasons, one especially being able to record locally.

    What do we think?!

How can I connect my Netgear Nighthawk to my CenturyLink Router in bridged mode?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 06:54 PM PST

    Various screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/2jEsyEY

Nighthawk r7500 v2 and C4000xg (don't know the brand, it's the router that CenturyLink provides)

CenturyLink support (the one person I found that understood what I was trying to do) told me that I could not connect the ONT to my Netgear router because the ONT "won't recognize that router". Since this was the only person I've talked to there that was worth a damn I am going to just believe that and go with it. She did give me some instructions for setting up bridge mode on the CL router.

    Steps I took:

    1. Turn on CL router, connect to its wifi, set up bridging (screenshots)
    2. CL router reboots and light is yellow-green after reboot
    3. Factory reset Nighthawk
    4. Turn on nighthawk
    5. Wait for its wifi to come on and connect to it
    6. Go to routerlogin.net — log in with factory default
    7. Go to Advanced -> Advanced setup -> Router / AP / Bridge mode
    8. Select bridge mode
    9. Select setup bridge wireless settings
    10. Type in name and password (see screenshot), apply settings
    11. On previous screen, press apply
    12. Modem applies settings (takes a few minutes)

After this the Netgear network is not available. Lights on the modem at this point:

    • power: white
    • Internet: flashing white some of the time
    • 2.4G / 5G: solid

Connected to CL modem network and internet is not available.

Connected to CL router and reverted the ISP Protocol back to PPPOE. Modem reboots and internet connection is now fine.

I tried connecting the Nighthawk to the CL router via CAT5 (internet port) to one of the ethernet ports on the CL router but it didn't work.

I can't tell if I'm doing something wrong or what.

Cost estimate for short fiber run?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 06:33 PM PST

So, I live in the rural-ish Michigan, never had good internet, etc etc. I have the unfortunate luck of living right on the boundary line between zip codes and so I get a lot of automated cards from the ISPs saying they want to sell me internet, only for them to say on the phone they don't service my address.

I got another one from WOW and poked around at neighboring addresses for their website just to see why they keep sending me cards. Was rather shocked when it popped up that someone whose driveway was 900ft away from mine has gigabit fiber access, and my neighbor whose driveway is 300ft away apparently is in their business internet area (no idea what that means)

Is there any way for me to estimate what they would want to reasonably run fiber out to my driveway? Heck, I'll figure out a way to get it up my 800ft driveway if it gets me off 4G 20 megabit down 100gb data cap internet. Would there be any difference if I tried to go through their business division?

Need help with Ethernet /Wifi Splitting

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 05:48 PM PST

I need help with splitting my network between my powerline ethernet connector and my wifi. I have 5 ghz wifi on a 1000mbps symetrical fiber connection. so i get about 100 mbps up and down from my desk on wifi, but it is extremely inconsistent, which is a problem for me as I game a lot and ping spikes are quite the frustration, So i run a powerline ethernet connection to my pc so that i can super consistent ping. However it maxes out at 60mbps. So Im trying to split the load over both of the connections. so that I can get high download speeds for videos and downloads and low ping for games. Is there anyway to do this ?

New House - Question About Two Networking Options

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 05:01 PM PST

We are building a home with Pulte which conveniently comes with ethernet runs to each floor. Included in these runs are pre-wired ceiling areas for WAPs.

I know mesh networking is another option, I'm just not sure what the pros and cons are of each? I'll have ATT fiber, so I want to use as much of that bandwidth as I can.

Would you suggest three WAPs (one centrally located on each floor) or a mesh network system?

Moved in with uncle and set up my own xfinity account and it cancelled his

Recently moved in with my uncle and I need a hardwire connection for work.

Xfinity came and set me up with a router, and the next day my uncles service stopped working. We called and they told us we couldn't have two routers in the same house.

Is there any way my uncle and I could both hard wire our computers on opposite ends of the house? Would it be possible to have to ISPs?

    Making my own patch cables

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 05:02 AM PST

    Good day all,

I wanted to make some of my own patch cables. I've made them before but it was always for the solid copper stuff and it worked out well.

The problem is that all I can find that works with the RJ45 connectors is the solid stuff. Like, where do you get your wire that is the appropriate AWG for the patch cables? Most of the long Cat6 wire I find around is super thin AWG and won't work with the crimp style RJ45 connectors. Any advice?

Wi-Fi Access point with a VPN Tunnelled Guest Network

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 04:12 PM PST

For reasons, (don't want to get into too much detail about why I want this) I'd like to allow bandwidth limited access (100mbps down/ 10mbps up) to my home network to a neighbour who I don't fully trust. The neighbour has a VPN tunnel so their traffic shouldn't cause significant legal issues if I can enforce that all their traffic goes through that tunnel. I currently have a simple network modem/router with wifi from my ISP, plus a basic hardwired network switch for my PC at home. I have a guest wifi network already set up on the ISP router but this provided router doesn't have the features to allow bandwidth limitation or any way to hardcode that VPN tunnel for the network. I'd like to add a second wifi access point which can have its own guest network with the features I mention above (bandwidth limitation and hardcoded VPN), what could I buy to do this? (p.s. I live in the Netherlands so not all US kit might be available)

Also, feel free to convince me that it's a bad idea to offer my internet access in this manner.

For anyone that has owned Linksys Atlas Max 6E for a while, how has your experience been? I’ve a rough go with mesh systems, but I just bought this one. (More inside)

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 04:08 PM PST

Over the last year I've gone from Netgear Orbi RBK853, to Eero Pro 6 (which lasted less than a month), to the Linksys Atlas Max 6E as of today. My Eero and Orbi both had similar issues with connectivity and slow speeds, and faulty firmware.

For those that own the Linksys, how has the experience been? Have you run into any issues? I'm optimistic as the reviews are favorable with wifi 6E and the reliability seems good, but these past systems have really left me gun shy to the point where I don't want to update to the firmware because I'm concerned about the same issue popping up. For now, I'm getting really fast and consistent speeds over wifi.

WiFi 760mbps less download than wired - Nighthawk C7800 3.1

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 02:51 PM PST

    Hey all,

I was wondering why my work calls have been so terribly choppy, and ran a speed test to compare my hardwired PC and my work Macbook Pro. Upload is the same around 17-18. The download is over 760 less on the work laptop.

Is this type of difference something that would cause my work laptop to struggle greatly with video calls? I have made sure the router has up to date firmware, have unplugged and plugged back in, and called Xfinity who told me that since it's just the WiFi, it has to be a modem/router issue.

Any thoughts on a fix if it is indeed making my calls an awful experience?

modem and router (can they be swappable) i need help pls

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 02:47 PM PST

Hi, so recently I've noticed that my modem is complete dogshit, the only difference is that between the other one is that I didnt get disconnects in video games, like literally, ping goes up to 700ms and I get disconnected (basically kicked from the match and lose all my points, apex legends btw)

I've come up with an idea, my system goes like this Modem > router > my pc, can I just take the router and use it as my modem? then it would be like this, modem(router) > my pc

Can it work? Does it require Access Point mode? cause I have that, and the models of my devices:

    router - asus RT-AC65P

    modem - technicolor dga0122 white

    Router upgrade for gaming?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 02:45 PM PST

Hello, I've been googling quite a bit to find out if there's a benefit to upgrading my router as the one I have which came with the internet installation in the house, is ancient.

I'm sitting on 120 mbps download and 15 mbps upload, a friend of mine suggsted the ASUS RT-AC86U for around 85€.

I'm on a wired connection from the PC to my router with what I believe is a golden cat6 cable.

I was hoping anyone could suggest a good router choice, let me know if I should upgrade my LAN cables or other cables as well as some pointers towards setting the router up internally, the most I know would be game-specific port forwarding.

Any input is much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Are the fibre-optic cables used in home networks usually very fragile?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 04:45 AM PST

I got a fibre-optic connection from a ISP just 2 months ago. Today, I noticed that it has already been bent at a steep angle near the fibre distribution box—leaving a severe irreversible crease on the cable.

    Images links:

https://ibb.co/0Gpc8TF (All the three arrows point to the same bend mark on the cable).

    https://ibb.co/zZMMBT7

However, the Internet is still working fine without any issues (No ping loss even). But, I'm worried that it would eventually break at the point from where it bends—probably after heavy raining.

Are these cables usually so fragile?

Is Pershing a career in Network engineering a good idea?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 10:21 AM PST

    Hi guys,

I'm in my 30s and have a good career... But it's never something I wanted just fell into and never left.

In my 20s it was fine, money is good... But I'm getting to the point in my 30s I'm just fed up. It's so hard to muster up the inspiration to get up for work because I'm just so bored of it.

I've been racking my brain for years as to what I could pivot to career wise, as obviously I don't want to make a wrong decision.

Anyway, I started to think over the past 6 months that one of my passions that could possibly be related to a change in career is networking.

I really enjoy managing my home network over the past 10 years I've went from just a shitty Comcast router/modem to building my own pfsense router, managing it and doing in depth configuration with essentially multiple IP addresses/sub nets depending on what I'm doing, wiring up the entire house with 10gb, VLANs to seperate my networks etc. Etc.

I wondered if this was something I can pivot to? I've been trying to research this but it's quite hard to find the pertinent information so I thought I'd come ask reddit.

I spend too much of my free time learning about network infrastructure and management that I realized that maybe this would be something I could do as a career?

First question, I want to pivot to a career that will always have some sort of demand. The way the world is going obviously it's going to need more and more people managing the massive internet and local network infrastructures that supports the entire world.

Is a career in networking a good choice? Is it fulfilling? Does it pay well? (By pay well in my location I mean upwards of $80k).

Would someone who manages a network be considered a network engineer? Designer? Admin?

Also, I work from home and I have spare time during the week as I'm very on top of my work and it's not that demanding. It would allow me to study part time in a degree or qualification. Is there a type of qualification that employers generally look for? Or would be better suited.

My worst nightmare is spending the time and money on a qualification and it doesn't help me. I have many friends who have degree and qualifications that they spent a lot of time and money on, that didn't do anything for them career wise.

    Multiple WiFi router through WAN?

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 02:14 AM PST

    Hello,

I have a hard time getting WiFi in the complete house, with 5Ghz not even detected and 2.4Ghz barely connected.

I had one Huawei 3 router, I just received a second one that I wanted to use to extend the WiFi.

Problem is, the second location don't have a strong enough wifi for it to be extended.

Right now there is a Ethernet cable connected to both router but then, I haven't find a way to have the same SSID without issue.

I've read that I need to disable DHCP, which I don't really want to do, I just want to extend the range and keeping the same SSID and use the WAN for that.

Is there an easy "wifi extender like" solution but using cable for both router ?

    Thanks !

    Help building my home network

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 01:21 PM PST

    Hey guys,

I recently got setup with my Starlink service which is an absolute world beater compared to the previous service I had, and now I need to update my network. The Starlink router is just god awful, and my Netgear AC3200 that I've had for about five years hasn't been working very well for the last few months. And for some reason it has issues using it with the Starlink dish. I was able to get it working but then the Ethernet ports wouldn't work, until I messed with a few settings and got it going but then the wifi was absolutely terrible, about 2mbps download from about 30 feet away.

Anyway, I need an upgrade. I've been doing some research on my own but honestly I'm an amateur and I don't really know what I'm doing. I've read a couple things about using a server like the HP T620 with different firmware and WAPs and switches and stuff like that and it all sounds like an interesting way to go about it but I just don't know where to start. I also recently picked up a point to point setup to get wifi to my shop which is about 150 yards from my home. My homes about 2100 sq ft too, but the office that the router is in currently is in the corner of the house.

Sorry this post is kind of all over the place, but I could really use whatever help I can get. I read about a lot of good routers too but I could definitely take some recommendations.

    Thanks for reading.
