Plan to get Gigabit internet, what is the dimension of the Verizon FIOS ONT? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 02:17 AM PST Hi, Anyone know the dimension (width x height x depth) of the Verizon FIOS ONT that is used for the gigabit service? How many other devices will Verizon install besides the ONT? What is the total surface areas and depth requirement? My current service is Verizon FIOS, but the ONT box was installed 7 years ago. I believe Verizon will replace it with a newer model. I want the new ONT to be mounted inside the the wall, preferably in a structured media enclosures (SMC) like this one, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V6ZTM51/, if the SMC has sufficient depth. If the ONT can't fit inside SMC, I will just have them mount it inside the wall and I will install an access panel for it. I need to know the dimension of all the devices involved so I know if it will fit inside a SMC and what size SMC get. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
How good is network over powerline? Posted: 28 Nov 2021 07:58 PM PST So I got a new house and I want to put ip cameras up and my plan was to have the poe switch in the garage and the nvr in my office upstairs. Well doing it this way means drilling to the second floor, then drilling into the attic then again to the office room. Oh and any fire blocks along the way. Would a network over powerline adapter be able to handle 3 or 4 ip cameras? Each one is 4mp running 12 to 15fps I did use one at my old house but it was just providing network to a dvr for remote viewing. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments] |
Running a router to another house Posted: 29 Nov 2021 04:41 AM PST my gran is moving in next door and I'm moving in with her. she doesn't use the internet but I do, but it would be pointless getting internet installed just for me. is there any way I could Run an ethernet cable from my Parents router (asus AC1750 ) to a cheap router in the house next door? then run some wifi extender boxes or an ethernet to the garage next door. would this be possible? or is there any better ways to do this? Can the TL-R605 handle policy routing when using the OMADA ecosystem? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 12:15 AM PST Planning to use the following devices:
Question: Will my PC on LAN be able to access the NVR on another network using the TL-R605? Or do I have to get a dedicated FW for policy routing like the Fortinet FortiGate 81F or Sophos XGS 87? What do you guys think? (planned devices are all from the new TP-Link lineup, been seeing a lot of good opinions about them) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2021 03:46 AM PST Greetings everyone, I have a few questions on setting up a home cctv system I am planning to have a 8 channel NVR IP camera system, likely HikVision or Dahua cams, with their own NVR recorder + storage However I am also concerned about the potential (and existing) security issues with these cameras and others like them Ideally I would like to setup in way that the cameras would all be wired to the NVR recorder, which then would sit in its own VLAN. However I would still like to have remote access to the camera stream + recorder footage Users of this system would also include my family members, who are not so tech savvy How would I go about doing this in the simplest and user friendliest way possible? Idea I had - VLAN for NVR + cameras, only allow family phones to connect to VLAN and NVR through firewall rules? Note - I only have a basic understanding of home networking, and I'm not a network/IT guy by trade Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2021 03:34 AM PST Well, in my haste to upgrade my shiny new laptop with wifi 64 (AX210N for a Asus G15 AMD advantage), since my home comcast network is supposed to be 900 Mbps, I seem to find that a lot of the wifi 6 routers are seemingly not performing faster than the 5ghz band? https://www.cnet.com/home/internet/wi-fi-6e-routers-are-here-and-were-not-ready-for-them/ is this bunk, because the author used a phone (S21) and is under power limits / tech limits, or would I see similar results with my AX210N? Specifically its this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08NSSJNV1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 module that is installed in the mini M.2 slot. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Nov 2021 07:42 PM PST How hard would it be to replace an existing telephone line with a ethernet port instead? My officer has 2 telephone lines and I need an ethernet one in there, would it be easier to just hire an electrician to drop a new wire and make an whole new port or would it be easy to do it myself and replace the telephone jack? The room in on the second story and I need the line to drop all the way to the basement [link] [comments] |
will it work if ISP is IPV6 only while my router is ipv4? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 01:40 AM PST Hi, my ISP will soon activate IPV6(I fear that it would be IPV6 only, but I'm not 100% sure), but some of my devices, like my old Samsung TV, are ipv4 only. Could a router translate outside IPV6 to local IPV4, then forward local IPV4 to outside IPV6? I use Deco M5 by the way. Any advice would be welcome! [link] [comments] |
Fibre optic internet disconnects same time daily basis Posted: 29 Nov 2021 01:25 AM PST Internet provider Technican was already investigating but couldn't find an issue. We have fibre optic internet. We use mac, windows, android and ios phone all of them have same issue. It shows connected to wireless but not connection internet. We even tried different router. It happens on daily basis. What software or logs I can collect, so next time when technican comes I can show all info that internet really doesn't work as it should? [link] [comments] |
A simple question about wiring boxes in the wall Posted: 29 Nov 2021 01:11 AM PST So this is kind of a simple question. I have cable routed through a standard wiring box in the wall. I guess there is some places for nails or screws to attach the boxes to studs. I need to get the box removed so I can get at the cable better to pull more out to rewire them or to fish new cables. Does anyone have a trick to get those out without making a mess of the drywall? I know this sounds simple but I can't figure it out without making a large hole in the drywall. Also, the cable seems very tight and I cannot pull any out while it is in the box. I am worried if I have to fish new cables it is not going to go well. I have some coated steel cable to attach to the end of the Cat 5 so I can then pull Cat 6e or better. I only need two cables between the upper floor and the wiring patch panel on the first floor. The Internet actually comes in on the second floor. I can move the Internet which is a cable connection that is also wired but I still will need at least one ethernet between floors. I have just Cat 5 and my original rewiring for Gigabit did not work well so I have purchased a higher quality crimping tool and better connectors to try again. Unfortunately, I am running out of cable to rewire one more time after trying several times earlier. Right now I cannot get much about 130 Mbit and I have Gigabit Internet service. Obviously, I am running into issues on a number of fronts. I just want to get most of the home network to Gigabit and run a portion of the network at 2.5 gig for backups and some high bandwidth server requirements. I would appreciate any practical advice and would enjoy hearing other's experiences doing what I am doing. I also have a quart of Klein Tools cable lube to make pulling cables easier. Later I will report back on some upgrades to my WiFi network with OpenWRT on the only AX router that currently can run that, I have not received the shipment with the router yet. I currently run a TP-Link AX1800 router with TP-Link's poor man's Mesh with OneMesh extenders. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2021 01:00 AM PST Hi does anyone know here how to change a wifi mac address? Because i feel like I'm not safe with my wifi mac address (without using randomised mac) for android 10+ [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2021 12:41 AM PST I have an old DrayTek Vigor 2760n router. I also have about 5 Airport Expresses and an Airport Base Station in bridge mode round the house connected via Powerlines to extend the wifi. The setup has worked fine for many years. The past month it so I'm seeing strange issues. Im seeing frequent drop outs on some devices, like my MacBook go offline for a minute, or an Alexa, or HomePod. I have smart plugs to control some devices, they'll go "not found" in the Smartlife app. I can reconnect them after trying a few times though. Different smart plugs may go offline different times. Like I managed to get one in one room back online but now my lounge lamp has disconnected. It's all weird. They're not connected to the same wifi extender. The wifi in that room is ok. So am wondering if routers can start to have problems after a time. It's about 10 years old. Or max connections. There's about 58 devices on the now, but more will be connected when the kids fire up their consoles. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Mixing Tri band & Dual band Mesh nodes? Posted: 29 Nov 2021 12:31 AM PST I currently have a 3 set TP Link Deco M5, no cabling at all in the house so I feel like going for Tri Band, something like the Deco X68. Is it a bad idea use them together? My idea was to replace the current positions of the M5s with the X68s. then place the M5 nodes on the outer skirts of the house (outside for the garden area and Cameras, or farther bedrooms where no on resides most of the time). Posted: 29 Nov 2021 12:01 AM PST I'm setting up a mesh system using TP-Link OneMesh. Router is TP-Link AX73. I am planning on using wifi repeaters. I can currently get the RE505x for $50. The RE605x is $80. Is the RE605x worth the extra $30? Any other advice about using OneMesh would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
This 50m cable is very cheap, will it be able to do anywhere near gigabit? Posted: 28 Nov 2021 11:50 PM PST I mean the title says cat6 1000mbps but a fair way down only says 10/100baset. I'd like to think that this was just an oversight. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/282460689664?var=581700721480 [link] [comments] |
ASUS XT8 ( also called AX 6600 router) says the IP range is out of bounds. Help please. Posted: 28 Nov 2021 11:49 PM PST I bought three of the ASUS AX 6600 routers and set up a mesh system. Works wonderfully. However my prior network IP was set up as 192.168.1.x and I have a lot of hardware that I have assigned IP addresses to. I got the new system and figured I'd just go in to the DHCP server and assign static IPs manually. However, when I try to do this it says that my IP is out of bounds. The router wants to start assigning IPs at 192.168.50.2. So I tried to change the IP Pool starting and ending addresses but when I put in 192.168.1.x its says that the IP is out of bounds. Can anyone explain this and is there a solution or do I have to change all this hardware manually to an address with a different third octet? [link] [comments] |
EAX20: Extender mode gives better speed than access point Posted: 28 Nov 2021 11:21 PM PST Hello all, I have a Netgear R7350 router that just doesn't quite reach a specific room in my house. So, I bought an EAX20 mesh extender thinking this would be a solution to my issue. I also bought an Ethernet cable in order to extend this network. My issue is this: when I set the extender up through extender mode (without Ethernet access to the router), my speed is largely increased in that specific room, but it will experience random drops. When using access point (with direct link), it creates two different network names that I believe are just extending the 2.4 and 5 networks from the main router. However, the speed is not increased at all. In fact, the 5ghz network is essentially unconnectable, and the 2.4ghz is slightly improved. Is there any reason as to why the access point mode is so much worse than the extender mode, even though the extender mode is not directly connected to the router via Ethernet. I can provide more information if anyone has any questions! I am at a loss, so any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Nov 2021 10:37 PM PST Hi all My current setup is an Asus RT-AC86u with and old rt-ac68u set up as an AP, using the AiMesh feature (backhaul using ethernet cable, sorry). I'm wondering if it is time to upgrade the old 68u to a better ASUS-router; and what a good upgrade would be... About me: I have two kids (one has discovered the joys of online gaming), a 300/300 fibre connection, all four members of the household stream stuff, we have about 20 devices on the current wifi, we sometimes stream 4k TV and I don't have an overview of the amount of wifi 6 devices in the house. At first I just wanted another AC86u (it is on sale for 100 $ today), but I'm kind of wondering if, I should get an AX-router from ASUS instead and run the AC86u as an AP for wifi 5 devices (I know it will not support wifi 6 no matter what). The AX-86u is 2,5 times the price here, which feels a bit steep but the reviews look good. On the other hand I normally change routers very rarely (the 68u is 10+ years old). I will probably run the future setup for 5~ years before upgrading. What would you recommend and why? [link] [comments] |
Should I replace mesh with router? Posted: 28 Nov 2021 04:31 PM PST I currently have google wifi mesh. I'm in a 650sqft 2 bedroom apartment in a dense area of NYC. Debating replacing my google Wi-Fi with a single router, which is what I used to have before I had google Wi-Fi. Also, been trying to plan better security. Has anyone used firewalla? I just signed up for NordVPN, can I use that with the firewalla? Do I need a router in the box to split the signal along all my hard wired connections, or just a switch? Which should I look into? I remember thinking about Ubiquiti EdgeRouter. [link] [comments] |
[Help] New router recommendation Posted: 28 Nov 2021 06:34 PM PST Hi, im looking to get a new router since im using my ISP router but there are too many out there. I usualy have 3 phones + 1 TV connected via WIFI and 1 PC and TV via cable. What i want most is a stable connection. I get a lot of micro disconnects (not enough to get kicked out of a game but enough to lag),web pages not fully loading some times and youtube buffer mid video even though im using a 500 Mbmps wired connection. Range is not super that important since i have a cable running to a AP in another floor. I did some quick research but cant decide. Asus RT-AX53U 55€ TP Link Archer ax55 - 85€ (does it have the extra chipset WAV654 like the AX50?) Asus RT-AX56U 85€ ASUS RT-AX92U -135€ (amazon deal) thx. [link] [comments] |
Is it possible for me to get stronger connection to my PS5? Posted: 28 Nov 2021 09:48 PM PST My PS5 is in my room which is located down the hall from where the router is. Its not possible for me to run a wire from the router to my room so I'm looking if there's another option for me. I was originally going to buy a wifi extender that has a Ethernet port and connect it to my ps5 that way, but I was doing some reading that wifi extenders aren't that great… I've also read about powerline adapters but I'm not sure if those would do the job or not. Just wondering if anyone has any advice for what would be best or if there's any other ways for me to get better connection to my ps5. [link] [comments] |
