Mishaal Rahman: "After reading what exactly the Android One program required of device makers, I'm not surprised it flopped. There are so many restrictions. Google even had the say on the industrial design and go-to-market strategy for each device. What was really in it for the OEM?"

Android 12 Made me realise how often my location permissions are used.

    Posted: 08 Nov 2021 10:01 PM PST

I installed a custom rom based on android 12 on my OnePlus 7TPro. One of the new features includes the small green dot showing that a permission is being accessed. I've noticed that Google Play services used my location almost everytime I unlock the phone and nearly every hour.

Even apps like Instagram and snapchat just randomly access my location. I've disabled the snap map thing and I'm not trying to add a location to a photo on Instagram.

To be clear, I don't care about this at all. I'm just doing a FYI. Also if you want, you can indeed deny the permission.

On a side note: Android 12 is super smooth and I'm really enjoying material you! I especially like the jelly like overscroll animation (works in every app). Even though very little has changed, a12 feels like a great qol update. Though I do hate not having more qs tiles and the brightness slider being hidden behind two swipes.

[Opinion] Ordering anything from the Google Store is a bad idea, especially right now.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 04:50 PM PST

In recent weeks, the Google Store has consistently had what they call 'high volumes' for customer support. This is an understatement: The volume is so high that Google Store has stopped taking phone calls alltogether. The chat option on their website frequently has a wait time so long that they won't even allow new inquiries to be added to the queue. Effectively, this means you can't get a hold of Google at all.

When my wife's new Google Pixel Pro 6 was delayed in arriving, I attempted to get hold of Google Store support over a dozen times over 5 days. Of those attempts, the chat queue was only open twice. The first time, I was unable to wait after 2 hours and had to close the chat. The 2nd time, I waited for over 2 hours on a Saturday night in order to speak with someone, who was finally able to to help with my shipping issue. The missing package was able to be quickly located by Fedex and delivered delivered today, and so far, she likes it... But what if we hadn't been able to find it?

Normally, if a retailer fails to deliver goods and you can't get in contact with them directly, you can ask your payment method to deny the payment in the form of a "Chargeback." Effectively, your bank will withhold money from the retailer while they investigate, and usually the bank will assume you are in the right unless the merchant proves that they did deliver the goods and services. But if you attempt to chargeback the Google Store, Google will ban your account from services across their platform. They've done it again and again. This cases are not a fluke, it was and still is official Google Policy.

TL;DR: Google Store cannot handle order problems right now, and will retaliate against you if you handle your problem through other methods like a chargeback. It is a risk of your money or Google Services accounts to buy anything from the Google Store, and is much safer to use other retailers such as BestBuy, Target, Walmart, etc.

Sorry state of high end Android phones in India

    Posted: 07 Nov 2021 05:28 PM PST

Its really sad that I have to write this post but I feel really sad looking at the state of high end Android phones in India.

Samsung is probably one of the leader in this space, however the phones are actually using a custom exynos processor which is not a match for superior Snapdragon that is sold in USA for a phone with same name. That means we Indians are paying higher price with taxes included for a phone that doesn't match what we get in USA/ China.

Google doesn't sell its latest Pixel in India. So we never get to have that as an option of pure Android experience. The only way to get Pixel in India is through Amazon India, without a "fulfilled by amazon" tag and ofcourse without warranty. I have heard reports of some screen display issues with Pixels so I am not sure if Importing it and using it is the way to go without warranty.

Oneplus phones were the best bang for buck with latest Snapdragon and Oxygen OS which was very near to Stock android. However with latest releases Oneplus looks like it has finally settled and has started using Color OS instead of Oxygen OS anymore. The camera was never really strength for Oneplus phones, however that could have been overlooked because we were getting latest processor with stpck android.

I wouldn't even consider the Xiaomi, Oppo etc in premium range until they clearly reveal all the bloatware the phone comes bundled with. In many cases we are not even sure if the phone is performing analytics and data collection behind the scene with that bloatware.

Overall its a very sorry state of affairs when it comes to Android phones situation in India. Would love to hear your opinions on the same.
