Pixel 3s and 4s bricking all over the place - what is going on?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 12:36 PM PDT

There is an ongoing hardware and/or software issue with Google Pixel 3 and 4 devices that is causing the devices to enter a "Qualcomm Emergency Download" mode - rendering the devices 100% useless.

The official Google issue tracker page for the issue currently has over 880 comments of people experiencing this issue. Most of the phones are a few months out of warranty, causing the owners to have to buy new:

    https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/192008282

I experienced this with my personal Google Pixel 4 XL yesterday morning. Upon waking up and picking up my phone, the device was completely unresponsive - it won't charge, won't enter any sort of special boot mode, nothing. I contacted Google support and it seems as though they have quietly added a 1-year extended warranty for Pixel 4s due to this and other power-related issues. I took the phone (at Google support's instruction) to a UbreakIfix authorized repair center, where they quickly determined that the phone was unrepairable.

I was then offered the chance to submit a claim through Assurant, pay a $149 deductible and have my phone repaired/replaced by Google. I have since pushed back on paying a deductible for an obvious hardware/software defect, and am awaiting their response.

It's clear that Google is NOT acknowledging this issue. Any one else having this experience? I've been an Android loyalist for 10 years, and this is may just be a defining moment for defection.

How to turn off Google Assistant app suggestions?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 05:31 PM PDT

When setting up my phone I left a setting on that told Google Assistant to suggest or install apps when needed, but I've decided I don't like this feature and want it off. For example, if I say "play x on youtube" GA will suggest installing the YT app instead of going to the browser and navigating to youtube. Where in the settings can I switch this off?

Is there a way to not have my clock camouflage itself against my background, in Android 12?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 11:37 AM PDT

Hi all. I just updated to Android 12 and I already hate it (🙃) but I won't get into that beyond: Is there a way to change the home-screen clock back to black and white, or theme colors without downloading a different app?

The adaptive coloring is... Well... It exists... and I'd love for the clock to actually be visible...

Does that option not exist? Is it hidden? Am I an idiot?

    TIA

    [help] FRP Lock

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 09:55 PM PDT

Hey. So I've bought this phone recently and I cannot get into it because the woman who sold it to me factory reset it without signing out. It was her mother's phone and she doesn't know her info. I was wondering if anyone had some advice. Thanks in advance!

    T9 keypad for pin entry

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 09:38 PM PDT

I'm fairly sure the answer to this question is probably no, but is there any way to get the T9 style number pad back for the PIN entry on Android 12?
I've been all over the settings and am just hoping I have missed it.

I use a passphrase for a pin and need the letters on the number pad.
Removing them is a security regression as I see it.

I dislike a great deal about the new UI and regret upgrading, but making it more difficult to enter a pin that is actually secure instead of 4 random digits is unacceptable.

The Kobo Libra 2 and the Tolino Vision 6 are the same ereader hardware but the Tolino is running an open source android build and the Kobo is not. Would it be possible to flash the FOSS Tolino OS onto the Kobo? If so would this be easy?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 09:28 AM PDT

So the Tolino is fairly hard to find outside of German speaking countries but the Kobo Libra 2 is more widespread and cheaper. I would prefer the Tolino for having more flexibility in choice of ebook store and control over the system. I'm wondering if it would be viable to buy the Libra and flash the open source android build listed by Tolino?

As far as i understand the Kobo Libra runs a locked down Unix based OS if that's relevant.

This is the Tolino Vision 6

This is the Kobo Libra 2

This is the Tolino Vision 5 firmware page (The vision 6 is very recent, i expect its page to be listed soon)

How do I quickly access my calendar on Android 12?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 09:05 PM PDT

On Android 11, I used to be able to tap in the area where the date and weather were displayed. If I tapped on the date, the calendar would come up, and if I tapped on the weather, the forecast would come up. Now when I tap anywhere in that top area (even if I tap in an empty space to the right of the date and weather), the weather app comes up, and I can't bring up the calendar that way anymore. Am I missing something?

Double inputs, side of screen not taking input

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 08:43 PM PDT

Occasionally I'll be typing and one of the characters will enter twice per touch. Just now I reset my phone because I couldn't type anything from the left side of my keyboard. Didn't check to see if the problem was localized to the keyboard or persisted outside.

Reseting fixed both issues on multiple occasions but I'm still curious why these things might be happening. Anyone have a clue?

Automating clicks on firefox or chrome?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 08:20 PM PDT

Is there an extension or some tool to automate clicks on a website? For example, if I were to use reddit, the automation would be like, clicking the top post on the front page -> upvoting it -> going back to the front page -> clicking the top post again .... repeat x times
It's for another site, not reddit thanks

In 2021, does decreasing Animation Scaling Really Save Battery?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 07:15 AM PDT

I'm about to come back to Android after using iOS for while. I know that one of the first things I did before when I got a new phone was open developer options and turn off or reduce the animation scaling.

Is that still "required" today? I mean, how much battery can it really save?

How can I charge my phone faster while using Android Auto?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 07:41 PM PDT

I don't believe my car has wireless Android auto (2021 Civic).

The port for AA is 1.5A. When I had my OnePlus 8T and used the cable it came with, it charged pretty steadily.

I plugged my Pixel 6 Pro in, and it barely charged 3 percent in an hour. I tried the red OnePlus cable as well as a different cable (not sure where from).

    What am I missing here?

Edit: I also have a separate aux power outlet that CAN charge quicker if I put the right charger in.

Can I put a wireless charger in my car through that, and plug my phone into the 1.5A AA outlet? It would charge through 2 places, so not sure if that's right.

Or maybe I need a different cable?

Why can't I hear out my phone?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 06:42 PM PDT

I have a Phoenix 5 phone that I got last year for my birthday. It's been acting up though over time. For instance. When using apps that make you tap the screen a lot, my phone sometimes freezes. The longest was about a day and a half maybe, and others times it varies from a couple seconds to over night.

Though, that is not the topic of this post haha. I can't hear on TikTok or messenger lately (assuming yt too, I haven't really checked) My alarms work and it still vibrates but when a sound is supposed to play there's a short sound and silence.

I put my ear to the speaker and it's quiet muffled noises. I've tried cleaning it but it didn't work. The only 'clues' I have is that the night when it started, it was sticky and my actual phone (underneath the phone case) was hot.

I let it cool off and cleaned it like I said but it's just not working :( can someone please help? And sorry if I rambled too much, I just want to fix the problem 🙏

    Photos out of order?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 06:09 PM PDT

Hello all. I have a Motorola G7 supra, my gallery on my phone comes from Google files. Recently, all of my photos have been completely rearranged. They used to be in order chronologically, (most recent at top) but are now loading completely nonsensically. On the files app itself, the photos are fine. But on apps like Snapchat, discord, and Instagram, the photos are arranged randomly

It's not sorted by size, dates, or A-Z. It's not by "type" (downloads, screenshots, etc)

I've tried restarting, signing in and out of Google photos, and deleting a large chunk of photos - it's all still out of order.

Any idea how to fix it? Thank you all

Did Android 12 break the app switcher button for anyone else?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 05:25 PM PDT

I'm using a Google Pixel 5. Since updating to Android 12, the app switcher button in my three-button navigation will randomly stop working. The touch registers (haptic feedback and the button is highlighted), but nothing else happens.

A quick restart fixes the problem for a while, but then the bug pops up again sometime later. This definitely falls into the mildly infuriating category, so I'm just wondering if I'm the only one seeing this. It's definitely a software issue, and it's definitely related to Android 12 in some way, but I have no clue what's happening beyond that.

Transferring photos from Google photos Locked Folder

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 05:20 PM PDT

Pixel 4a 5g. Just got a pixel 6 pro. Would like to transfer my photos/videos from my locked folder over to my new phone.

I am extremely scared that the only way to do this is to move it back into my photos app and have to dig through all of the years in which the pic was taken and hunt everything down.

Is there a way to get the current time back when viewing notifications in Android 12?

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 09:42 AM PDT

When I swipe down from the top bar it seems the clock is replaced with the current date, and the right side says "until 11:45am". I have no idea what's until 11:45 (it's 12:40pm right now). I just want to see the current time in one of the corners. Any ideas?

    Samsung Bluetooth Auto-connect

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 04:41 PM PDT

I'm using a Samsung A52 5G and my headphones of choice are Sony's WH-1000XM4. Both my old phone and my current laptop automatically connect to my headphones when Bluetooth is on etc, yet my Samsung does not. All it does is bring up a list of paired and/or available devices. The headphones are paired and of the two options available, only 'connected for audio' is selected.

Is this an issue across all Samsung devices, having no auto-connect? Or is there a workaround for this? I've spent hours looking into it but got no definitive answer.

lockscreen clock and pattern lock in android 12

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 07:41 AM PDT

is there a way to change the lock screen clock in android 12? The new clock is so huge and it's on two lines and is much less easy to read. I can see maybe if you like to turn your lock screen on then set your phone down and walk 5 feet away it might be better to read because it is huge but for normal viewing it just looks like two big numbers instead of a single time, and is significantly less easy to read at a glance.

Is there a way to change the background during the pattern lock screen? In past versions it would just use my actual background but now it turns the whole screen white and the dots are black so it is like highlighting to anyone who may be looking where i am swiping.
