Need a laptop - USA, theoretically unlimited budget. Posted: 01 Oct 2021 07:03 PM PDT Hi all, I need something new. Currently daily drive a 2019 15" Macbook Pro with an i9, Vega 20, and 16GB RAM. And it is just *not* cutting it. I'm usually 5-10 (or 15-20) gigs into swap and waiting multiple seconds for inputs to register. This laptop will be triple-booting Linux (probably Arch) and Hackintosh, and Windows 11. I'd like at least two M.2's if possible, so Linux can have one, and split the other. Linux will be the primary OS.

Posted: 02 Oct 2021 02:54 AM PDT I was looking for a new device to replace my Dell Inspiron 5559 (which still works fine, by the way). I was looking for a 2-1 with pen (for notes) and a Ryzen 5, if possible, (from what I've found it has good performance and doesn't uses too much bettery compared to Intel). I would like to spend about 800€ or less. At the moment some good options I've found are: HP Envy x360 (15-ee0003nl), Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5, Asus Vivobook Flip (TM420), Dell Inspiron 14" 2-1. Do anyone has personal experience about these devices? Also I would like to know if they handle well Solidworks, because in the near future I'll be using it for some university projects. Thank you all for your advices 😊 [link] [comments] |
Need a laptop for music and productivity apps with a good webcam under £1000 Posted: 02 Oct 2021 03:56 AM PDT Hi, I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Book Pro on a deal. Loved it but had to return it as the touchpad was sticking. After receiving some of the worst customer service ever from Samsung, I've decided to look around again first rather than just replacing it. I'm a musician and lecturer so need something I can use at home and work. I'd be really grateful if anyone could recommend a Windows laptop with the following: * 15 inch screen * Lightweight / very portable * Decent speakers * Suitable for editing music and basic videos * Easy to upgrade memory (hoping for 512GB SDD installed) * 1080p webcam if possible - I have a lot of online meetings and teaching * Budget is £800-1000 * Bonus points if they run educational discounts as this will be used for work. In case it's relevant, current laptop is HP Envy X360 from 2017. Now unsupported, but was pretty decent before hard drive began to fail. Webcam and weight were biggest issues with that. Need a laptop for University and producing music Posted: 02 Oct 2021 04:02 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
1000€, but I'll be happy to spend less if possibile
Not that much, if it's thin It's better but I wouldn't ditch the idea of buying a slightly more heavy one.

Like I said in the title, I'm currently making music and was searching for a laptop that, even if I'm still a beginner, won't give me any problems for a while. For university I'll use standard programs that are run by any OS
N/A
I pirate a lot of music stuff (including FL Studio) because I don't have the money to do otherwise. This may be useful for you to suggest me the best OS, since I don't know much about any other OS except Windows, which I've used since I was like 6yo [link] [comments] |
Get a M1 Macbook Pro now, or wait? (Graphics design, Davinci Resolve Studio) Posted: 02 Oct 2021 03:22 AM PDT Hi there! I'm having a hard time deciding here. I know that there's a M1X or M2 processor on the horizon with new Macbook Pro's coming up (14 and 16 inch as rumoured), but I'm very tempted by the current-gen M1 Pro's. Bit of background: I've always been building my own computers and running macOS on them (hackintoshing) with great results. Basically a Mac Pro-tier device for one-thirds the money. However: I recently got a Panasonic Lumix S5 which is capable of generating very high quality 4K 60fps video footage. To my surprise; my 32-thread beast of a processor (AMD Ryzen 9 3950X) based computer is having a hard time working with these files in Davinci Resolve. So, I've been eyeing the developments of the M1 range of Macs, which I must say have exceeded all expectations so far. I've seen videos on Youtube of the base model Macbook Air flawlessly running 4k footage in Davinci Resolve. My real qestion isn't really if I should wait for the next gen Apple sillicon to roll in, but rather if going with an M1 Macbook Pro (512GB SSD, 8GB RAM) is going to suit my needs, with the heaviest workload being working with 4K raw footage in Davinci Resolve. Even though I've seen the Youtube videos, I'd rather hear some first hand experience from people on here. Or, even more extreme, would the Macbook Air do? A fanless device 'sounds' really enticing to me as I often work in quiet environments that I'd rather not fill up with the sound of a fan ramping up. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Dell inspiron 16 and 15 plus vs Hp envy 14 (and similar models). I can't decide Posted: 02 Oct 2021 12:20 AM PDT I'm going to buy a new laptop soon and i found some interesting options that i'm trying to choose from.My max budget is around 1300-1400 dollars . I'm lookig for a good all-rounder laptop that i can use for a wide variety of things like some gaming (not hardcore gaming),video and photo editing and media consumption ,and general school use. I would like to keep it for around 5 years. My top priorities are : good performance for the tasks mentioned with a dGPU , enjoyable ,vivid screen (at least 14 inch and 16.10 would be perfect),practicality, solid build quality and reliability. Decent battery life.Size and weight ( i would not go for anything bigger than 15 but idk if 16 is too big)are a bit less important . I have chosen these three laptops ( but i also have some secondary options) : Dell inspiron 16 and 15 plus (RTX 3050/3050ti and i7-11800H,16GB DDR4 . 1TB or 512GB SSD (swappable) 1300 euros. Hp envy 14 : GTX 1650ti Max-q and i5-1135G7 (which outperforms some i7 laptops thanks to the effective cooling and excellent turbo-boost sustainability) and 16 GB of soldered RAM.512 GB SSD (swappable). 1200 euros Reasons why I would by the inspirons : has more powerful RTX graphics and octa-core CPU (even tho notebookchecks says the RTX are slower on the inspirons for whatever reason ) Reasons i would buy the envy : The envy 14 and the envy line-up in general usually have better build quality (smoother trackpads ,better keyboard and screen and materials). Even tho the GTX and quadcore CPU are definitly less powerful than the hardware on the inspiron , from what i have seen , it still have pretty excellent performace , and maybe even a little more power than i need at the moment. I can surely say that the envy 14 is the most powerful non-gaming 14 inch laptop on the market right now(since 14 inch laptops in the same price are not equipped with a dGPU ) and a ryzen CPU would have made this laptop an absolute beast but i can understand that they went intel becuase of AMD's avaiability problems. I'm really struggling to choose a laptop , especially in this period. So i would be happy if someone can give me some suggestions based on the info i gave above. [link] [comments] |
looking for cezanne (zen3) or zen 2 with upgradable ram and dgpu for uni student Posted: 02 Oct 2021 03:52 AM PDT i have a pretty good idea of what i want but it seems hard to find anything really appealing and not a single finder website has a filter for 'free ram slots' -cpu: any zen2 or 3 but prefer zen3 -ram: must be upgradable to at least 24GB, better 32GB. -gpu: must have a dedicated gpu but nothing fancy. i wont use it often but when i do i would not want to miss it. a 1650 would be sufficent. -build quality: i had a 2015 msi gaming laptop and am still angry about gaming laptops build quality/ chassis rigidity. hinge broke after 2 years, screen frame had cracks after 1 year. i had it in my backpack every day and never dropped it. powersupply died after 3 years. f* u* msi -budget: around 1k€/1.2k$ +/- 200. -refurbished and options i already checked: now this is what really bugs me. i am open to 2nd hand business/premium laptops but price/performance ratio is turning sour on used market, especially in comparision with modern cpus/gpus performance. for example the Thinkpad T470p seems nice and rigid but i cant really find a good one (without scratches on the monitor and keyboard stickers) under ~700€=800$. I have to spend close to 1k and get barely half of todays performance. meanwhile an asus zephyrus g14 (2020) with r5 5600H and 1650ti starts around 900€ and totally shreds the T470p performance wise, but is only upgradable until 24GB, meaning only 16GB will run in dual channel... also asus rog flow x13 seems good price/performance but then the ram is soldered completly and the 32GB model is unavailable and starts propbably at 1.8k€. lenovo legions seems like big plastic chonkers so also not convincing as a daily carry-around driver. most other ryzen options have either soldered ram or start closer to 2k, which is out of my budget as a student. in short: ryzen 5/7 with up to 32GB ram and dedicated gpu, but decent build quality and reasonable price. any ideas? what did i miss? thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

USA - Searching for up to $1200 Laptop 15" for Dad Posted: 02 Oct 2021 03:12 AM PDT Good day! I am searching for a laptop for my dad who is currently using a 10 year old Asus. I am struggling to find a suitable 15" laptop around the $1k-$1.2k USD price range. My dad is not a power user but does tend to leave a lot of applications running. He will use this laptop likely for another 7-10 years, so good specs (within budget) are desired. He also carries his laptop everywhere with him so weight should be considered important. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Although well under budget, I have found a Lenovo Yoga 7i 15" matching above specs for $999 and Dell Inspiron 5510 (Refurb) matching above specs for $760 but I do not now the quality of these. I have found numerous gaming laptops, but they all seem quite heavy (although better spec'd). Budget allows up to $1200 so if something is better out there, please suggest! Thank you! Need a laptop for gaming that has a thunderbolt port Posted: 02 Oct 2021 01:35 AM PDT Hi, I'm looking for a laptop to play games on and I need a thunderbolt 3 or 4 (both are fine) cause i need to connect 2 1440p monitors.

Gaming laptop with good 15" FHD screen, RTX 3060, and low fan noise? Posted: 01 Oct 2021 05:10 PM PDT Is this asking too much? Absolute max is $2000. Closer to $1500 would be better. I've seen the Acer Helios, Nitro, Gigabyte G5. They all look good but some people say they run hot or the fan noise is high pitched. I think ASUS TUF is out because the screen colors look awful from notebook check. Thanks.

Is Evoo Gaming a good laptop brand? Budget Range:$800-$1000 Country: Ecuador Posted: 01 Oct 2021 08:07 PM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Between $800 and $1000, country of purchase: Ecuador (I'm using USD because in Ecuador we use USD)
Not really
First the performance, then the build quality, then the battery life and finally the form factor.
I don't really care, meanwhile it's not a brick
More or same than 14 inches
Adobe Programs (like Ps, Designer, etc). Some video editing, some audio editing and gaming.
Not games with a lot of requirements like for example Red Ded Redemption, but enjoyable games with less requirements like Valorant, some battle royale, some Indies or even GTA Online. Meanwhile it runs properly and doesn't crash or overheat the laptop, I'm fine with 30fps-60fps.
N/A
I was looking into buying a new laptop, and I found this Evoo Gaming lap. It has a GTX 1650 4GB in graphics, 10 gen Corei5 4,5 ghz, 8gb ram and just 256gb in SSD. It's $950, yeah, overprized because everything in my country is overprized. The thing is that I've never heard of "Evoo Gaming" and want to hear people out about it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Oct 2021 07:56 PM PDT I know this is sort of dorky, but I've been so used to my Thinkpad's trackpoint that I legitimately prefer it over touch. Of course, only Thinkpad's seem to have them, and although this laptop can play something like Tomb Raider or TF2 in low settings, I'm looking for a gaming laptop that'll do everything moderately at the very least, that has a trackpoint nipple. If Thinkpads are TRULY the only option that has trackpoint in its stock form, then I've only found the T15 which has an NVIDIA GeForce MX330 and is quite expensive for its specs. Among the many options for gaming laptops, are there any with possible keyboard replacements and compatibility with a trackpoint? [link] [comments] |
