Need a laptop - USA, theoretically unlimited budget.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 07:03 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I need something new. Currently daily drive a 2019 15" Macbook Pro with an i9, Vega 20, and 16GB RAM. And it is just *not* cutting it. I'm usually 5-10 (or 15-20) gigs into swap and waiting multiple seconds for inputs to register.

This laptop will be triple-booting Linux (probably Arch) and Hackintosh, and Windows 11. I'd like at least two M.2's if possible, so Linux can have one, and split the other. Linux will be the primary OS.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.
I don't care, but I only want to purchase a laptop as barebones as possible. This means base/minimum RAM, no storage, (my own wifi card?) etc.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Power is more important than form factor, but this can't be a portable desktop. I don't want a 2-in-1 (but if one happened to fit my needs, I'd be fine wiht that), or care about something being an "ultrabook". Build quality is absolutely critical, and I'm willing to spend more for it. I am (and always have been) a mac user, so Apple hardware is my benchmark.
That all said, upgradability trumps absolutely everything else.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
This gets carted around all day. I'd like it to be around the same weight and size as a 15" MBP (4lb), but if something else hits it out of the park, I'm flexible. I'd prefer thicker over heavier, but only to a point. Once you get over 1.5" I'm less happy.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Preferably ~15", but again, flexible. I'd consider a 14" but that is as small as I'd go.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
YES. I NEED eight cores (minimum) on the CPU, a dedicated GPU with minimum 8GB vRAM, and the capability to go up to or above 64GB RAM. I run virtual machines all day, do video editing in Premiere (4k60 timelines), edit tons of 50MP RAW pa hotos, and generally beat the shit out of systems I'm using. I do 4k livestreaming as well. (I don't game. I'm very much a power user/know my way around computers. I run an IT business. I just don't know anything about laptops that aren't macs.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
No games. For the occasional Cities: Skylines I do play, the rest of this system will more than do the job.
    • Any specific requirements such as reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive, or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
The trackpad HAS to be as good (or close to) as an Apple trackpad, and the build quality's got to be up there as well. I don't give a crap about windows hello or fingerprint or CD/DVD or any of that.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Cost is the least of my concerns here. If something is $10,000 and fits the rest of my needs perfectly, I want to hear it. This is the no-compromises laptop post where y'all get to go wild.

    University notes

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 02:54 AM PDT

I was looking for a new device to replace my Dell Inspiron 5559 (which still works fine, by the way). I was looking for a 2-1 with pen (for notes) and a Ryzen 5, if possible, (from what I've found it has good performance and doesn't uses too much bettery compared to Intel). I would like to spend about 800€ or less. At the moment some good options I've found are: HP Envy x360 (15-ee0003nl), Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5, Asus Vivobook Flip (TM420), Dell Inspiron 14" 2-1. Do anyone has personal experience about these devices?

Also I would like to know if they handle well Solidworks, because in the near future I'll be using it for some university projects.

Thank you all for your advices 😊

Need a laptop for music and productivity apps with a good webcam under £1000

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 03:56 AM PDT

Hi, I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Book Pro on a deal. Loved it but had to return it as the touchpad was sticking. After receiving some of the worst customer service ever from Samsung, I've decided to look around again first rather than just replacing it.

I'm a musician and lecturer so need something I can use at home and work. I'd be really grateful if anyone could recommend a Windows laptop with the following: * 15 inch screen * Lightweight / very portable * Decent speakers * Suitable for editing music and basic videos * Easy to upgrade memory (hoping for 512GB SDD installed) * 1080p webcam if possible - I have a lot of online meetings and teaching * Budget is £800-1000 * Bonus points if they run educational discounts as this will be used for work.

In case it's relevant, current laptop is HP Envy X360 from 2017. Now unsupported, but was pretty decent before hard drive began to fail. Webcam and weight were biggest issues with that.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

1000€, but I'll be happy to spend less if possibile

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

No, I want a new computer

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Form factor isn't important, but I don't really want a 2-in-1. Build quality must be good, but to me what is most important are performance and battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not that much, if it's thin It's better but I wouldn't ditch the idea of buying a slightly more heavy one.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Like I said in the title, I'm currently making music and was searching for a laptop that, even if I'm still a beginner, won't give me any problems for a while. For university I'll use standard programs that are run by any OS

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A solid keyboard would be really appreciated.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I pirate a lot of music stuff (including FL Studio) because I don't have the money to do otherwise. This may be useful for you to suggest me the best OS, since I don't know much about any other OS except Windows, which I've used since I was like 6yo

Get a M1 Macbook Pro now, or wait? (Graphics design, Davinci Resolve Studio)

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 03:22 AM PDT

Hi there! I'm having a hard time deciding here. I know that there's a M1X or M2 processor on the horizon with new Macbook Pro's coming up (14 and 16 inch as rumoured), but I'm very tempted by the current-gen M1 Pro's.

Bit of background: I've always been building my own computers and running macOS on them (hackintoshing) with great results. Basically a Mac Pro-tier device for one-thirds the money. However: I recently got a Panasonic Lumix S5 which is capable of generating very high quality 4K 60fps video footage. To my surprise; my 32-thread beast of a processor (AMD Ryzen 9 3950X) based computer is having a hard time working with these files in Davinci Resolve. So, I've been eyeing the developments of the M1 range of Macs, which I must say have exceeded all expectations so far. I've seen videos on Youtube of the base model Macbook Air flawlessly running 4k footage in Davinci Resolve.

My real qestion isn't really if I should wait for the next gen Apple sillicon to roll in, but rather if going with an M1 Macbook Pro (512GB SSD, 8GB RAM) is going to suit my needs, with the heaviest workload being working with 4K raw footage in Davinci Resolve. Even though I've seen the Youtube videos, I'd rather hear some first hand experience from people on here.

Or, even more extreme, would the Macbook Air do? A fanless device 'sounds' really enticing to me as I often work in quiet environments that I'd rather not fill up with the sound of a fan ramping up.

    Thanks!

Dell inspiron 16 and 15 plus vs Hp envy 14 (and similar models). I can't decide

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 12:20 AM PDT

I'm going to buy a new laptop soon and i found some interesting options that i'm trying to choose from.My max budget is around 1300-1400 dollars . I'm lookig for a good all-rounder laptop that i can use for a wide variety of things like some gaming (not hardcore gaming),video and photo editing and media consumption ,and general school use. I would like to keep it for around 5 years.

My top priorities are : good performance for the tasks mentioned with a dGPU , enjoyable ,vivid screen (at least 14 inch and 16.10 would be perfect),practicality, solid build quality and reliability. Decent battery life.Size and weight ( i would not go for anything bigger than 15 but idk if 16 is too big)are a bit less important .

I have chosen these three laptops ( but i also have some secondary options) : Dell inspiron 16 and 15 plus (RTX 3050/3050ti and i7-11800H,16GB DDR4 . 1TB or 512GB SSD (swappable) 1300 euros.

Hp envy 14 : GTX 1650ti Max-q and i5-1135G7 (which outperforms some i7 laptops thanks to the effective cooling and excellent turbo-boost sustainability) and 16 GB of soldered RAM.512 GB SSD (swappable). 1200 euros

Reasons why I would by the inspirons : has more powerful RTX graphics and octa-core CPU (even tho notebookchecks says the RTX are slower on the inspirons for whatever reason ) Reasons i would buy the envy : The envy 14 and the envy line-up in general usually have better build quality (smoother trackpads ,better keyboard and screen and materials).

Even tho the GTX and quadcore CPU are definitly less powerful than the hardware on the inspiron , from what i have seen , it still have pretty excellent performace , and maybe even a little more power than i need at the moment. I can surely say that the envy 14 is the most powerful non-gaming 14 inch laptop on the market right now(since 14 inch laptops in the same price are not equipped with a dGPU ) and a ryzen CPU would have made this laptop an absolute beast but i can understand that they went intel becuase of AMD's avaiability problems.

I'm really struggling to choose a laptop , especially in this period. So i would be happy if someone can give me some suggestions based on the info i gave above.

looking for cezanne (zen3) or zen 2 with upgradable ram and dgpu for uni student

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 03:52 AM PDT

i have a pretty good idea of what i want but it seems hard to find anything really appealing and not a single finder website has a filter for 'free ram slots'

-cpu: any zen2 or 3 but prefer zen3

-ram: must be upgradable to at least 24GB, better 32GB.

-gpu: must have a dedicated gpu but nothing fancy. i wont use it often but when i do i would not want to miss it. a 1650 would be sufficent.

-build quality: i had a 2015 msi gaming laptop and am still angry about gaming laptops build quality/ chassis rigidity. hinge broke after 2 years, screen frame had cracks after 1 year. i had it in my backpack every day and never dropped it. powersupply died after 3 years. f* u* msi

    -budget: around 1k€/1.2k$ +/- 200.

-refurbished and options i already checked:

now this is what really bugs me. i am open to 2nd hand business/premium laptops but price/performance ratio is turning sour on used market, especially in comparision with modern cpus/gpus performance. for example the Thinkpad T470p seems nice and rigid but i cant really find a good one (without scratches on the monitor and keyboard stickers) under ~700€=800$. I have to spend close to 1k and get barely half of todays performance. meanwhile an asus zephyrus g14 (2020) with r5 5600H and 1650ti starts around 900€ and totally shreds the T470p performance wise, but is only upgradable until 24GB, meaning only 16GB will run in dual channel... also asus rog flow x13 seems good price/performance but then the ram is soldered completly and the 32GB model is unavailable and starts propbably at 1.8k€.

lenovo legions seems like big plastic chonkers so also not convincing as a daily carry-around driver.

most other ryzen options have either soldered ram or start closer to 2k, which is out of my budget as a student.

in short: ryzen 5/7 with up to 32GB ram and dedicated gpu, but decent build quality and reasonable price. any ideas? what did i miss?

    thanks in advance

    Hi everyone,

Everything is in the title. i was initially looking at true gaming computer like the legion 5, but in the current country i live in (Belgium) there is a shortage of good computer and graphic cards and the "offers" i have seen for the lenovo legion 5 for example are total rip-off.

Below is the form for my request.. Thanks a lot in advance!!

    ***EDIT: adding the form***

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
i would rather have it new
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
i don't care much about form and battery life, i just want it to be able to play a few competitive games at comfortable settings without overheating (see below)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

USA - Searching for up to $1200 Laptop 15" for Dad

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 03:12 AM PDT

Good day! I am searching for a laptop for my dad who is currently using a 10 year old Asus. I am struggling to find a suitable 15" laptop around the $1k-$1.2k USD price range. My dad is not a power user but does tend to leave a lot of applications running. He will use this laptop likely for another 7-10 years, so good specs (within budget) are desired. He also carries his laptop everywhere with him so weight should be considered important.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Up to $1200 USD (able to go to $1500 if specs are worth it but ideally $1200 and less)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Manufacturer/Certified Refurbs okay
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, Build Quality, Battery Life, Form Factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
The lighter the better (4-ish lbs max)
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15" only, not larger or smaller.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Corel Draw, consumer architecture design programs, google sketch, general internet/email
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      0% gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Backlit keyboard highly preferred; overall general high build quality of laptop preferred; touchscreen doesnt matter (matte screen would be optimal but not a must)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Prefer a laptop under 4lbs.. Laptop will likely be used for 7-10 years. I was looking for something with an 10th or 11th gen i7 or ryzen 7 with 16+gb and 1tb ssd.

Although well under budget, I have found a Lenovo Yoga 7i 15" matching above specs for $999 and Dell Inspiron 5510 (Refurb) matching above specs for $760 but I do not now the quality of these. I have found numerous gaming laptops, but they all seem quite heavy (although better spec'd). Budget allows up to $1200 so if something is better out there, please suggest! Thank you!

Cheap (~$650.00 USD) with Decent Graphics for Halo: Infinite

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 02:09 AM PDT

Hi, I've currently got a lenovo s340 which is actually able to run MCC pretty well. But it of course wouldn't be great at all for newer games, especially if I want decent graphics.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$600 is ideal, can go up to $700 USD.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Would prefer new but, as long as it works and satisfies the requirements sure.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance > battery life >>>>> build quality > form factor. Still, battery life doesn't matter much at all so long as it can get through a regular day outside of gaming.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not at all.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Halo Infinite, 1080p 60fps
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard, touchpad; nothing else necessary
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've been considering the Acer Nitro 5 2020, but again the battery life doesn't need to be that great. Cheap = good.

Gaming laptop with good 15" FHD screen, RTX 3060, and low fan noise?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 05:10 PM PDT

Is this asking too much? Absolute max is $2000. Closer to $1500 would be better.

I've seen the Acer Helios, Nitro, Gigabyte G5. They all look good but some people say they run hot or the fan noise is high pitched. I think ASUS TUF is out because the screen colors look awful from notebook check.

    Thanks.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • < $2000 USD. < $1500 is better

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Needing a gaming laptop <=$2000 USD

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 10:11 PM PDT

I would really like at least 16GB RAM, an RTX 3060, and a 1 TB SSD. Beyond gaming, I'd also like to comfortably draw with Creative Cloud. What are my options here?

Is Evoo Gaming a good laptop brand? Budget Range:$800-$1000 Country: Ecuador

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 08:07 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Between $800 and $1000, country of purchase: Ecuador (I'm using USD because in Ecuador we use USD)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Not really

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

First the performance, then the build quality, then the battery life and finally the form factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    I don't really care, meanwhile it's not a brick

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

More or same than 14 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Adobe Programs (like Ps, Designer, etc). Some video editing, some audio editing and gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not games with a lot of requirements like for example Red Ded Redemption, but enjoyable games with less requirements like Valorant, some battle royale, some Indies or even GTA Online. Meanwhile it runs properly and doesn't crash or overheat the laptop, I'm fine with 30fps-60fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    N/A

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I was looking into buying a new laptop, and I found this Evoo Gaming lap.

It has a GTX 1650 4GB in graphics, 10 gen Corei5 4,5 ghz, 8gb ram and just 256gb in SSD. It's $950, yeah, overprized because everything in my country is overprized.

The thing is that I've never heard of "Evoo Gaming" and want to hear people out about it.

Gaming laptop that uses a trackpoint? What about the ability to replace the stock keyboard with a trackpoint one?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 07:56 PM PDT

I know this is sort of dorky, but I've been so used to my Thinkpad's trackpoint that I legitimately prefer it over touch. Of course, only Thinkpad's seem to have them, and although this laptop can play something like Tomb Raider or TF2 in low settings, I'm looking for a gaming laptop that'll do everything moderately at the very least, that has a trackpoint nipple.

If Thinkpads are TRULY the only option that has trackpoint in its stock form, then I've only found the T15 which has an NVIDIA GeForce MX330 and is quite expensive for its specs. Among the many options for gaming laptops, are there any with possible keyboard replacements and compatibility with a trackpoint?

    Light student laptop

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 07:55 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      15 000 CZK, Czech Republic
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I would be carrying this laptop to school every day so weight and size are a priority. I own a powerful gaming PC already, so the laptop would be used strictly for school. Good battery life would also be nice so it would last at least most of the day.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      See above
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Probably 14"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Maybe only very occasional light gaming while traveling, games like Overwatch
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Low settings is fine, but at least 30 fps would be welcome
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Not really, maybe a fingerprint readed
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
As I mentioned I already have a main PC with powerful specs and big storage so 256 gigs is good enough for my needs. I would be buying from one of the following websites:

    www.alza.cz/EN

    https://www.czc.cz/

I saw this laptop https://www.alza.cz/EN/acer-swift-3-pure-silver-all-metal-d6436611.htm?visited=1 and it looks pretty decent, any opinions?
