Linux as main OS and Windows on USB - What do you think?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 09:25 AM PDT

So first of all, I'm a 17 years old that grew up with Raspberry Pi's Debian based distro and I'm a fan of Linux's efficiency, customization and CLI-way of doing things. Recently, I'm dreaming of having Zorin OS as the main OS on my laptop, but... I'm still quite dependent on a certain windows/mac exclusive app: Ableton Live 10. Ableton isn't oficially supported on Linux and I actually payed a lot for it, so I would like to continue using it. I have hopes that with Play On Linux eventually I'll be able to run Ableton on Linux.

Neverthless, I believe Ableton is actually the only app retaining me... So I was wondering that,, instead of flashing a Linux distro on a USB and having Windows on my SSD, what if I did it all the way around? Dual booting probably isn't an option since yesterday I almost got fired my laptop: the Zorin OS installer crashed and when I tried to clean up the partitions I screwed up and somehow corrupted my BIOS. I got my parents pretty scared because I practically disabled my device and HP Support wanted to charge us 250 bucks to repair it... No way, all it needed was a healthy CMOS reset. Neverthless, I believe I won't be trying dual booting at least for a couple of months.

So... what do you think? Is it safe, smart, and possible to install Zorin OS (an Ubuntu distro) into my SSD while leaving Windows in a USB?

Also, I've heard that a SanDisk Extreme 3.0 USB is one of the best options for booting right off a USB. If I decide to go with the USB booting option... what characteristics am I looking for in a USB when buying one (for booting)?

    Multiple monitor problem.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 10:07 AM PDT

I'm running Linux Mint Cinnamon, when my PC goes to sleep or screensaver my running app, such as firefox, get switched to my secondary monitor.

System is an older HP Z400, AMD Firepro 2 gig workstation graphics card, with 4 display port outputs. I've tried switching the ports, still happens.

It is an annoyance, but I still would like to know a solution.

Crontab script isn't executing despite no errors

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 12:38 AM PDT

I just tried to set an alarm for 12:37AM by using this crontab:

    0 3 * * * thenomadicaspie /home/thenomadicaspie/personal/scripts/backup.sh 37 0 * * * thenomadicaspie /home/thenomadicaspie/personal/scripts/alarm.sh

And this in the bash script:

    mpg123 ~/Downloads/alarm.mp3

But it didn't work. Is this the correct format or did I do something wrong?

I use KDE as my default distro (and windows for the classes). While undergoing the installation process for KDE, I remember removing out the previous distro-- Ubuntu, and yet I find it in my boot menu. How do I remove the Ubuntu distro from here while retaining the other ones ?

So I basically don't know anything about Linux (only the concept idea ) but I'm curious to understand a little more about the basic. Is there a video (or a channel) tutorial from basic to advance about Linux and how to setup? Thanks in advance!

Can preinstalled GTA 5 work on Ubuntu?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 01:22 PM PDT

I have installed GTA 5 on windows 10 and I wanted to switch to Ubuntu.
Will I have to reinstall GTA 5 on Linux to make it run ?

PS: I haven't even used Ubuntu (or any linux distro) even once but wanted to switch to it cause Windows 10 sucks and can't update to Windows 11.

    Am I doing checksums wrong?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 12:57 PM PDT

Hi all. I want to get into the practice of doing checksums, so I downloaded GTK Hash from the AUR. So naturally you select the file you want, and you tell it to generate the number.

Then, you compare there number to the one the website gave you. GTKhash doesn't do that, for some strange reason. Which of course negates the reason for its existence.

I want something that will generate a hash, AND compares the two hashes to see if they match. The one the website gave you, and the one you generated. What good is it doesn't compare it for you? I don't even get a little green checkmark or anything when using GTKhash.

    Linux Discord Communities?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 11:21 AM PDT

I am a software developer who uses Linux in some form 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for work. Most of this is remotely through SSH. Recently I booted up Ubuntu in VMWare to get a better feel for the GUI (it's been years since I tried Ubuntu), and god damn. I am a big fan. So I found a spare SSD and am currently writing a bootable USB ISO for Ubuntu to install. I am preparing to move to Linux full time while keeping a Windows install on a different hard drive more or less exclusively for playing games.

My concern is that I am going to hit inevitable walls and issues. Which I understand are the learning pains of deciding to move to a new OS. I am fairly competent at CLI commands, but am going to be relatively new to the whole visual environment. Which raises some concerns about drivers, software, etc. I am wondering if there are any really good Linux/Ubuntu Discord servers where I may be able to poke in time to time and ask for help. Or in general learn about new software and fun Linux stuff. I want to both help myself and participate in the community.

Does anyone have any invites or suggestions on servers to join? I would greatly appreciate it!

Replacing previous linux os with debian, question about partitioning

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 07:36 AM PDT

    Hello!

Right now, on my SSD+HDD system, I have windows 10 installed on the SSD and using space from the HDD, and a fedora installation on the same HDD.

Before I installed fedora, I shrinked a 300gb partition and after installation, the same partition was further partitioned into a EFI partition (600 MB, fat32) , a Boot (I think? 1GB, ext4) and a root partition (298GB, btrfs). I will include a photo.

The partitions as seen from within fedora.

Now, I'm looking to replace the fedora installation with debian. The debian installer offers a choice to "replace a partition". I choose the btrfs partition and I get notified that the existing EFI partition will be used for starting debian.

    The debian installer

    So, I wonder:

    1. Am I safe to proceed with the installation?
    2. What will happen to the 1GB partition (the one that I think is a boot partition) ? Will it remain "stranded" . If it does, is it safe to just format it and give it back to windows (for example) ?

how to set up and auto-mount encrypted external storage? home folder

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 01:35 AM PDT

I am looking for an up to date tutorial on how to

    1. create encrypted partitions on external storage

    2. automatically mount the partitions on boot or login

    3. use the partitions for some or all of home directory storage (symlinks?)

    4. sort permissions so that some storage can be used by all users

Have tried to find this info but it's one of the situations where different places are proposing totally different methods with different tools. Very confusing. Made a couple of attempts but they didn't work and not sure how to troubleshoot.

    Am using Gallium OS.

PS. I prefer GUIs for tasks like this when there is a choice because it's easier to see what all is going on.

    thanks for any insight!

How do you figure out the launchers / commands to launch things on non-xfce distros?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 12:14 AM PDT

One of the reasons why I use XFCE, more specifically Mint XFCE is that when search for an app in the start menu, or as they call it the "Whiskers Menu", I can right click on it and select "Edit Application", which gives me the launcher info for it. From there, I know exactly what command is used to start the app, the exact name of the app etc. I need that when purging stuff, or when creating desktop files for autostart etc.

    https://preview.redd.it/j8g114m7lzq71.png?width=615&format=png&auto=webp&s=549d82119ec4ae9383f850df3d06e91678965fe1

    https://preview.redd.it/gl8fmucalzq71.png?width=773&format=png&auto=webp&s=80f2eb83d653104ffab4b6ffa579326f130753ad

As you can see, with this, I can easily find the name/command for any app, including system apps and purge them if I want to even. So my question is do the more visually pleasing distros have a feature like this? I've tried PopOS, KDE Plasma (desktop environment), Mint Cinamon (actually I'm not sure about Mint Cinoman. I barely used it because I didn't like the window manager settings) and I couldn't figure it out. Without this I literally have no clue how to find the names of things, other than using terminal commands to list all of my installed items, then filter the results though the "grep" command etc. (and it can still be a hit or miss)- basically a pain in the butt.

jar runs differently in terminal than ssh

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 11:24 AM PDT

I have a jar which works as expected when run in the local terminal, but when I login remotely via ssh and run it, it doesn't work correctly. I'm not super experienced with Linux, is there some trick to make Ubuntu run the program locally even though I'm launching it via SSH?

For example, is it possible to launch a program like Chrome via SSH, have it open on the Ubuntu machine as if I had locally clicked the Chrome icon? I don't need to see chrome remotely, I just want it to open as if I opened it normally from the Ubuntu UI, even though I'm doing so via SSH. Thanks!

    Edit:

For example, if I type google-chrome in the terminal on A, Chrome opens. Good, expected, cool. If I type google-chrome in SSH on B, I get an X-display error, as is expected. What I want, is to type google-chrome in SSH on B, and get Chrome to open on A, as if I typed it directly into A's terminal, instead of in SSH from B. Can I get Linux to just pretend I'm sitting at the local terminal instead of at another computer via SSH?

Dummy Output - Sound Card Listed as Unplugged

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 09:46 AM PDT

Ok so no matter what I can't seem to get an answer to this, so fourth time's the charm ig.

In the Sound settings the audio output is listed as Dummy Output. If i try pavucontrol, i can see my audio cards listed as "(unplugged) (unavailable)"

I have an amd radeon rx 550 graphics card (doubles as my sound card since I use headphones plugged into my monitor). There's also the audio bus in my case, which broke some months ago, so I don't use it. My processor is an AMD® Fx(tm)-6300 six-core and i'm currently running Ubuntu 21.04.

Also no matter what distro I try the problem is the same. I've tried mint, ubuntu, and manjaro.
