My neighbor is screwing me over, and I please need help to defend my home network from him. Posted: 29 Oct 2021 10:05 AM PDT inb4 sorry for my english, not a native speaker and also bear in mind I'm a tech illiterate. ---- TL;DR: Arris Router TG2482 apparently 'hacked' by rude neighbor. Cannot access wifi client list to check who's connected (gets stuck loading, and then error) and I cannot even access the router's interface when trying with an ethernet cable because 'other local user already login, please wait'. I know they're using my wifi and please need a way to secure my home network. Many thanks in advance! ---- So, new neighbor moves in with a kiddo, they seem super nice and friendly. Somehow they seemed to be having problems getting their wifi installed by their provider, so I let them have my password and use mine until they got theirs'. Naturally this is where problems started. We are six people in my place, five of them connected to wifi to access internet. Added to their two (apparently super consuming) connections to our wifi, internet was hectic for a week. I went over and spoke to him, he said he please needed one more week because of work and school for his child. I accepted. Fast-forward a month in, he still is not off our wifi so I decide to MAC-block them, and changed the wifi password. He came over and complaint and whatever. Internet was running nice and smooth for about a day or two before it started getting suuuper laggy again. So I try go access my wifi user interface to see what's going on and when trying to check the 'wifi client list', the page just keeps loading to afterwards return a long 'SyntaxError: unexpected end of JSON input' message. I thought this might be because I was trying this via wifi, not connected directly to the router by a cable. When I tried again with an ethernet cable, I got a "other local user already login, please wait" message. I know they're using the wifi because I see the kid playing mobile games standing right next to our wall. And call me a paranoid and everything, but I swear I CAN access the wifi client list when they are NOT home! Never when they're there, and internet's laggy. Can you guys please tell me how to solve this problem? The router is an Arris TG 2482. I would like to also know how could they have managed this, as I am planning to head over there after solving this, hopefully, to talk about it with the guy. I feel this is pretty rude of him. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Free WiFi from landlord but not allowed to get my own. Hardware advice Posted: 29 Oct 2021 05:36 AM PDT I just moved to NY state to an area that has insanely high rents and close to 0 options. I lucked out and found a little apartment from a private home owner in a nice spot at a very affordable rate. The downside is; they just renovated the apartment and they absolutely want no new holes drilled into walls for internet. So I'm stuck using their WiFi which they provide for free but it can be slow sometimes. Their house is about 100 feet from my unit, my computer has external antennas and I have it set up against the closest wall to them. Fast.com speed test shows around 7.5 to 10mbps at best. My plan is to ask them to call provider and make sure they have fastest internet they can get for what they pay. They are older so I assume they are probably on some slower speed they got years ago. Then, I want to possibly get a newer router and give it to them if they have something older. They might be using a modem with WiFi but I have no idea. Finally, my question. Is there some type of external antenna I can get with a few feet of wire? If possible, I want to put the antenna right outside on my porch so I can eliminate a wall with only about 5 feet of cable if that's even a thing. For reference, my computer usually shows almost full signal (3/4 bars) but sometimes goes as low as 1 bar. Any help is greatly appreciated. It's an annoying situation for me internet wise but everything else about it is just too good to even consider looking for a new place. I'm at least $400-600 below market value for monthly rent. Posted: 29 Oct 2021 05:22 PM PDT I'm connecting a TP-Link AX1800 to a Motorola MG8702. The 8702 is in bridge mode, but the AX1800 refuses to get an internet connection. I've cloned the MAC from the modem and am connected via a definitely working Ethernet cable. No amount of reboots or resets have helped. I cannot wrap my head around this. Thank you. Having connectivity issues with ethernet connection but wifi works fine Posted: 29 Oct 2021 07:05 PM PDT Made a post a few days ago about some internet issues I'm having. Got it narrowed down to my ethernet being the issue. Basically on ethernet I can connect to the web, but some sites are slow to load and require multiple refreshes, some games don't allow me to connect to servers or boot me if I do manage to connect, and discord does not allow me to stream video or screen share. All of this works if I switch to wifi from the same router or hotspot connection from my phone. I ruled out cable damage as I tried multiple different ethernet cables. I have to believe it's something in my router settings, specifically pertaining to the ethernet network? Or maybe my firewall on my PC? I'm less sure about the firewall as wouldn't I be experiencing the same issues on the wifi network? My ethernet worked fine for months and I don't remember doing anything that would change this. I've never accessed my router settings in a browser until now, and I don't even know what do or what to look for now that I'm in the router settings. I'm using a netgear router if that helps. What should I be looking for/changing in the router settings if this is my issue? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2021 05:32 PM PDT For reference, I'm using 1.1.1.1 dns resolver and always have been. I just want to know what could be the cause. It's also not unique to one pc either. Really obnoxious. [link] [comments] |
Really need help with internet connection asap Posted: 29 Oct 2021 07:18 PM PDT So my router has power on, WiFi 5G, WiFi 2.4G, 1 connected Ethernet cable, and WAN. All of these are lit up as green. The only one that is red is the internet. The WiFi shows up on my phone but there is no internet with it, things won't load. I've tried restarting and waiting and then checked all the cables. I would include pictures but this sub doesn't allow me to. I really need to get this working because I have assignments due tonight. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
First Time Setting Up Home Network - IP address/subnet Questions Posted: 29 Oct 2021 07:16 PM PDT This is probably a very beginner question, but I have a bunch of moving parts and I'mt not 100% on setting up the IP addresses. Before I dive in and make all of these changes, I want to make sure this is the correct method - it works as it now, but I don't think it's correct. Onto the questions! Here is my setup
I have the gateway running to the switch, then from the switch I have the router. I have a pi-hole plugged into the router. I'm also in the process of setting up an IDS on a second raspberry pi that will mirror the gateway's port on the switch (which I think is the correct port to mirror - as opposed to the router's port). The IP problem.
I had this IP thought because I want to utilize some of the switch ports for my PS4 (currently plugged into router), move my pi-hole pi to the switch, and of course my IDS will be in the switch as well. As you can see I am running two separate subnets in my network - 192..168.1.x and 10.0.0.x. Is best practice to have all of this on the same subnet? I'd prefer them all to be the same for tracking purposes. My thought is to change the ATT gateway (apparently I can't use 10.x.x.x ranges because ATT uses those internally so that leaves me with using 172.x.x.x for everything) to a 172.31.31.254 for example, which should give my switch an IP in the same range, then change my pi-hole DHCP to a range in 172.31.31.x. Am I thinking through this correctly? Setting all of the IP's to the same subnet. Or does it not really matter? From my laptop in the 10.0.0.x range I can still reach things in the 192.168.1.x range. I would just prefer them to be the same. [link] [comments] |
Not really a home networking post, but I figured somebody might have an answer here. Posted: 29 Oct 2021 06:59 PM PDT I'm trying to play Dying Light with 2 guys via ZeroTier. Zerotier emulates a LAN connection, basically. The game is up to 4 players. Whoever connects first can get in, whoever connects second cannot. Any tips? Yes, they are both authorized on the network. It's purely an issue of first come gets in, and the second guy can't connect. Doesn't matter who the second guy is. The error on the 3rd person's (the guy who cannot join) end is "moderate NAT type" - but again, it doesn't matter which friend it is. The first to connect can join, the second cannot :( [link] [comments] |
Mesh wifi or just two access points or roaming? What's what? And what do I need for another AP. Posted: 29 Oct 2021 06:57 PM PDT So I have a network that works fine. I have things wired in many places, tvs, cameras, pc, work laptop etc. I use an edge router and some TP-Link Poe switches. I use a Ubiquiti Networks Unifi 802.11ac Dual-Radio PRO Access Point I got in 2018 about the same time I got the edge router. Anywho. It all works fine inside. With it being nice and work from home I've been going outside. The wifi work but I lose some on my calls. From the distance. I've been moving the AP to a wire I ran for an outdoor one down the road. Well now it's down the road. So to make things work do I need another ubiquity AP for outside or does it need to be a "mesh" one or do I just get any AP and make it use the same name? If I go with Ubiquiti will I need a cloud key thing or USB or just use the web setup with java that you can use on a PC, and then never run again, to set it up? I'd run a wire but I will be hopefully building a deck in a year or two and my "desk" outside it really just temporary for the winter when it's not raining everyday or too hot (Florida) [link] [comments] |
As a rule, will a dedicated access point provide better coverage than an all-in -one? Posted: 29 Oct 2021 02:35 PM PDT Trying to maximize signal in a 2,500 Sq ft three floor layer cake. VERY densely populated urban setting, and I have gigabit internet from my ISP. Modem is pretty centrally located in the centre of the middle floor. I think I can get away with a single AP for all three floors, and frankly I think that's my only choice as I can't run any new wires here (wife plus very old house) and wireless mesh just seems like it's a bit shit. My question is - will I get noticeably better signal from getting a Ubiquiti/Omada dedicated AP, than a good consumer all-in-one unit? [link] [comments] |
Replacing Wireless Access Point with better signal one Posted: 29 Oct 2021 02:32 PM PDT I have a Ubiquiti Networks UniFi AC Lite Access Point ( UAP-AC-LITE ) connected to a Ubiquiti Networks UniFi Security Gateway. I shouldn't have "cheaped out" and gotten the cheapest UniFi AC access point. I would like to get a UniFi access point that offers better range. How easy is it to swap it out? Can I just buy another UnFi access point, give it the same name and security settings, and swap the devices out? Or do I have to repeat the setup of reconnecting all of my 25+ wireless devices? Need help getting faster speeds throughout my house Posted: 29 Oct 2021 06:03 PM PDT Okay, so I'm not the smartest when it comes to this stuff but I'm trying to get my full internet speeds throughout my home. I have an Xfinity Modem/Router combo and I have an ASUS AC-1700 that I have set up as my wireless access point. My ASUS router is connected to my Xfinity router via an ethernet cable and I have my ASUS router set up the way it should be, DHCP disabled, SSID and WPA2 the same, NAT disabled and it works fine, however I am not getting the same speeds that I do when I am near my main Xfinity router, which is 1GB speeds. When I'm connected to my ASUS router I only get about 92 to 100 MB download speeds. I'm not sure if I have explained this right but I just want to get the same 1GB speeds from my ASUS router that I do from my Xfinity one. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
A question on setting up a network drive through a server Posted: 29 Oct 2021 05:08 PM PDT Hi everyone! Acouple months ago i got an old poweredge server from my technology teacher, and ive been trying to think of ways to use it. My mind has ultimately decided to run a hypervisor setup and have one of the running OS' host a network drive to the rest of my family. However my house is very old and doesnt have rj45 jacks or even rj11, and without wireless on the server im trying to find ways of getting the device hooked into our network. Ive recently thought that i could hook it into my own computer and see if i can connect somehow through there but even if i could i have no clue how. Is this a reasonable solution to the issue or are there easier ways? My solution seems to be pretty bad and i may just resort to using ethernet over power connections to hook it to the network. TL:DR i have a pretty sketchy way of trying to connect a server to my network and need advice on how to do it/easier ways to do it Thanks to any help yall can give me! [link] [comments] |
Speeds degrading in evening accompanied by inability to login to SB8200. Bad modem or ISP issue? Posted: 29 Oct 2021 05:00 PM PDT So been having some issues with our internet which is 1G Down, 60Mbps up via mediacom cable. The speeds start off good ~800/70 but as the night goes on the speeds start to fall, typically upload tanks first down to 2-5 and then download starts falling and eventually they both settle in ~5Mbps. They will stay at this level all day but as soon as I reboot the modem it's right back to the good speeds. This is independant of which device we use as we have a router that allows speed tests directly between router and modem and although we are currently trying LAG enabled on the modem we've noticed no difference on or off. We have had a lot of issues with speeds in the past so I wouldn't be surprised by further ISP/node issues but what is curious to me is that when the speeds are good I can connect to 192.168.100.1 fine and look over everything, but when I start having problems if I try to get to the modem page to see the log it just times out. Searching around I've found some people talking about the modem overheating and causing problems but after I reboot and look at the log there are no events like that and the modem is fairly open air against a cool wall and temp feels exactly the same whether it's behaving or not. Event log: https://i.imgur.com/X4TM6VN.png Signal levels: https://i.imgur.com/kl3CJGO.png Just curious if anyone had any thoughts on if bad signals somehow could cause me to not be able to login to the modem page or if the modem may be having a hardware/firmware issue? Thanks in advance for any advice. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2021 01:12 PM PDT Recently I started considering buying a MikroTik router hap ac2 or ac3 as I want a more advanced home wifi router to be able to make advanced configurations that I can't on standard commercial routers. However looking at https://www.cvedetails.com/product/23641/Mikrotik-Routeros.html?vendor_id=12508 RouterOS seems had quite a lot vulnerabilities especially if compared with products like fritz https://www.cvedetails.com/product-list/vendor_id-435/AVM.html or pfsense https://www.cvedetails.com/product/21763/Pfsense-Pfsense.html?vendor_id=11749. So my question is: Do you think that security wise, MikroTik products are worth buying? Or can I find better solutions from the point of view of security? [link] [comments] |
Advice running ethernet cable. Posted: 29 Oct 2021 01:11 PM PDT I am having an addition built on my house, and have the opportunity to add an ethernet jack for 2 TVs (separate rooms, but building a sports bar). My issue is that I can get most of the way to the router, but coming in from above or below is a problem. Above is an unfinished attic with blown-in insulation. If I go this route, it would be difficult to secure the cable to joists, and drop it down through the stud cavity. Below the room with the router is a portion of a finished basement, and a cold-air return. I might be able to drill down and possibly catch a pull string with my fish tape. MoCA isn't really an option because of the new construction. [link] [comments] |
Need help planning home network upgrade Posted: 29 Oct 2021 04:38 PM PDT Hi all, I'm about to upgrade my network and I'm looking for a sense check on some things and advice on others. A general review of my plan is welcome. Apologies for the long post and thanks in advance. Background: my home is 1500 sqft in the UK spread over ground floor and 1st floor. Internal walls in my house are mainly brick. I also have a converted garage room in the garden. I'm not very experienced in network design but I like playing with tech so I'm not afraid to tinker with configurations. My network as of now: fibre internet connection (350 down/35 up), ISP modem/router/AP, TP link 16 port switch (no POE/not managed), cat 6a wiring throughout. Most wiring is connected to the switch near the modem except for cctv cameras that connect to a Hikvision DVR in the loft from which there is one line to the switch. There is also a small 5 port unmanaged no POE switch in the living room near the majority of the entertainment devices (PS4, Sky, Apple TV etc.). I'm carrying out a full review and intending to upgrade whatever is needed. I've already purchased a Ruckus R600 AP which I will be installing centrally on the 1st floor ceiling. The rest is still to be decided, including where the POE power for the R600 is going to come from. I will be getting a NAS in the short to medium term. Something like the Synology DS1520+. It will mostly be used for data storage and backup, as well as an off site backup for family (and vice versa on their NASs for my backups). I would also like to play with Docker, Plex and other features built into Synology NASs. Devices that use the network are listed out below. I would like to separate "safe" devices from "unsafe" - I believe the best way to do this is by setting multiple SSIDs and VLANs? I would like to set up a guest wifi SSID, and I also need to separate work equipment from personal. In terms of standalone router - is something like a Mikrotik Hex S good enough? It doesn't have many ports but my thinking is that most of the network will be connected through the switch rather than directly to the router - please let me know if I'm incorrect here. The DS1520+ has four ports that could be link aggregated, presumably they would be connected to the switch rather than the router? In terms of the switch, I currently have a TP Link TL-SG1016D which I think is not suitable for the VLAN separation I'm looking for. What is a suitable switch for my needs? Clearly it needs to be managed, and with some POE+ ports for APs. I don't mind choosing a good managed switch without POE and adding something like this 8 port POE injector (https://www.fs.com/uk/products/65994.html) if it is better value. Again, thoughts welcome. Posted: 29 Oct 2021 04:20 PM PDT Moving into a 2 story duplex with basement. Previous tenants told me they had the router and modem upstairs. I plan on gaming in the basement with my PC. And my son's PC will be upstairs on 2nd floor in his room. I originally wanted the modem and router in the basement but now I've been thinking and I want them on the first floor. My son's going to be running wireless and I'll be running wired. got 200ft Ethernet cord. Is this a good option or is there another option I could take? obviously using a Ethernet Switch as well. :) Any inputs would be nice. Also let me know what I'm missing. [link] [comments] |
Any comparison tests between Ubiquiti’s U6 LR and Ruckus R550? Posted: 29 Oct 2021 04:06 PM PDT Has anyone tested performance between Ubiquiti's U6 LR AP and Ruckus R550, or other Unifi AP? I am looking for an enterprise grade AP for a small office, without any licensing fee. My Verizon Fios Router works better than the U6 LR. I am looking for recommendations between Ruckus, Aruba and Juniper Mist. [link] [comments] |
Complete new network build for small office, need some advice Posted: 29 Oct 2021 04:16 AM PDT Hi, I am currently in the process of building out a new office space for my business. The office is in a large office building and my space is about 2000 sqft. We will have about 10 people working in the office at first, approximately 20 devices total (wired and wireless) connected to the network. We will be getting a 1Gbps connection from the ISP. I am looking to build out a network that is robust and reliable, with enough room to handle more people (and more devices) in the future as well as much higher speeds as faster packages become available from the ISP. We will only have a handful of wired devices, most will be wireless so strong, stable and fast WiFi is a priority. There are also plenty of walls (Glass and wood) throughout the office that can potentially affect the WiFi. My current understanding is that the modem from the ISP will connect to a central switch (16 port), that will branch out the connection to all the Ethernet cabling around the office. I will use a couple of these Ethernet cables to connect to 2 APs to have WiFi throughout the space. From here, I am lost, I don't know if I should go for a Mesh system with wired backhaul or APs instead. I have good experience using a mesh system at home where a wired backhaul wasn't possible, my mesh system has a dedicated network for wireless backhaul, the speeds are great and it works seamlessly throughout the house. I don't know if setting up APs will be better in the office as there are more users and the network speed is higher as well. But I am concerned about long term maintenance of the APs as we don't have any dedicated IT personnel and if the connection will be smooth and seamless as a device moves away from one AP and closer to another AP. I am not extremely budget constrained, but I would like to keep the costs low if possible. I will appreciate any advice and guidance. Maybe even links to your recommended products that fit my requirements. Thanks for all your help in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2021 03:20 PM PDT I'll start off with saying my wife's PC had this issue about 2months ago, a wired Windows 10 box appeared to drop its network connection for about 5 seconds every 20-30 seconds. The only recent-ish configuration change was about 5 months ago when I swapped to a D-Link DIR-3040 router. I tried all the suggested guides online (Win10's network reset, fiddling with drivers, tried different cabling, tried different ports on router, netsh resets, etc). In the end I bought a PCI ethernet adapter and connected her PC with that, and it was fine. I chalked it up to a hardware failure on an ~8 year old motherboard. Cut to today, and I start experiencing the same issue on my box (wired device). I run a ping to google.com, and to my router, and I can clearly see interruptions every ~25 seconds. I run through all the same troubleshooting steps I did on hers with no luck (haven't put the PCI card in my device yet). Now the real twist I run multiple raspberry pi's with cameras (all connected through wifi), and notice I'm not seeing any interruption to those camera feeds. You can see in the screenshot below, I'm running ping to Google, one of my cameras, my router, and have a Putty window to the camera and have it pinging out to Google as well. My ping times out to google/router, but not to my camera, or from the camera out. https://i.imgur.com/sQV7f2u.png I've ordered another PCI card, but I'm at a loss of what the root cause could be. If traffic was failing between my box and the router, I wouldn't expect to be able to ping wifi devices on the network. [link] [comments] |
What's the best way to mount a router without damaging the wall? Posted: 29 Oct 2021 03:07 PM PDT Sorry, I know this isn't exactly a networking question. I'd like to mount my Wi-Fi router to get a better signal, and it has two holes you could use to hang it on nails or screw. But I don't want to put holes in the wall because it's a rental. My first thought was to use Command Strips, but the router has four nubs so that it can't sit exactly flush; the tape won't touch the wall. Hooks would make it hang away from the wall at an angle and that'd look stupid. There doesn't seem to be a Command Strip product that'll just stick out as a peg, like a nail or screw. Anyone have a better idea? For reference it's an Archer A7. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2021 02:42 PM PDT I'm helping install IP cctv at a volunteer centre. I think 2 cameras will need to be over 100m away, approx 150m of cable will be needed. What's the best way to extend the range- if it is at all possible? I understand I could run fibre with a converter at each end, but this would cost more than the Ethernet cable (most of which has already been donated). Can I use Cat5e for this long run? If I use switches can they be 10/100? Or should they be gigabit capable? I'm not quite sure which IP cctv kit has been donated but I think it is an 8 camera reolink. Can I run 1 single Ethernet from the nvr to a switch closer to the cameras to save excess cable? Could we add extra (above the 8) cameras via the switch? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Oct 2021 02:36 PM PDT So I'm want to create a network for my home, I've recently had a garage conversion and the signal/speeds aren't great, plus I have a few ring products that could benefit from a better setup. I'm going to try to wire the Ethernet plugs as well (could go horrendous) I'm wondering what advice can you lot give? Any decent tutorial videos for wiring the plugs? What cabling do I need to go for? Any advice on mesh networks, they haven't got to be 'pro' I'm happy to aim for mid range. Any advice would be great, and happy to answer any Weston's to help get there. [link] [comments] |
