How to replace telephone wire with ethernet cable Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:54 AM PDT Hello, just moved to a new place. I would like to run an ethernet cable from the router/switch to another room to add an AP, its around 6m but 3 doors so will be a pain to run cable along the floor. I noticed there is an old telephone line running through the walls connecting both rooms, I dont need to keep the old wire. Could I tie a string to one end of the phone wire and pull it through, then pull a Cat6 cable through using the string? What should I think of before hand? I am not sure if there is electricity running in the same pipe. [link] [comments] |
Connect a 2nd router for gaming - HELP Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:55 PM PDT So english is not my first language and IT is even less of a language for me. So hopefully I will explain myself right. I really want to have a powerfull router for gaming, main reason because fifa network is really bad. Even if this is game servers fault, a better router might help in this case. I tried this before but for some reasons it did't worked and I returned the router because I didnt wanted to lose more time on it. https://i.imgur.com/2Ewovsg.png This is the config i'm looking for and this is my main doubts about it. first of all: why not connect all to 2nd router ? : because I tried it once and IPTV boxes just stoped working after 30 seconds. tried solutions like turning off DHCP etc and nothing worked. BIGGEST QUESTION: Doest this actually do something, and gaming router will be doing something WITH BRIDGE MODE or it would be only a "signal repetitor" instead an active router improving connection ? Or for this to work with QOS etc it would have to be everything connected on 2nd new gaming router ? OBJECIVES FOR NEW ROUTER : - BETTER ROUTES - QOS - BLOCK BAD SERVERS BY IP - TRY TO TURN OF IPV6 - READ SOMEWHERE THAT MIGHT WORK GOOD FOR FIFA thanks in advance and Hope that you understand my concerns [link] [comments] |
Downloads on home network tank the entire networks latency. Cant figure it out... Posted: 31 Oct 2021 06:39 PM PDT So earlier today I noticed while working remotely with a remote desktop connection that I was lagging like crazy and could barely get a frame per second. I pinged the default gateway from the cmd from multiple machines in the house and noticed the pings to the router were taking anywhere from 20ms to 500ms to complete across the board. I have gigabit fiber internet, my net speed sits around 980Mbps and my router is an alien spaceship looking thing, the Asus RT-AC88U which should be able to handle this throughput easily based on its specs. After some troubleshooting I realized it was downloads. This issue is fairly new. When any PC on the network is downloading a file at relatively high speed (still not hitting the speed limit of 980Mbps) it causes network wide latency spikes of up to half a second which destroys any real time playback/steaming/gaming/PCoIP remote work for anyone else on the network. It doesnt slow anyones connection down, theres still plenty of bandwidth to use, its just the latency that gets railed. Ive had a dig through the router settings and cant seem to find any settings I can change that will stop this from happening. Why would normal downloads from steam/battlenet/Xbox be causing the entire network to slow down? The routers CPU usage is only at 20% so it doesn't seems to be the router bogging down. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
The best way to remotely access a pc outside without a VPN? Posted: 31 Oct 2021 12:50 PM PDT I am looking into a way to access my pc from my ipad outside, i looked into teamviewer, VNC and SSH, the performance seems subpar on teamviewer, i heard some people say that VNC is not safe without VPN for accessing pc outside your home network What is the best way to remotely access the pc? Is there a way to make VNC more secure other than using VPN? or is SSH secure enough and can i somehow use GUI on SSH? [link] [comments] |
Home network that can be "managed" remote with a DIY VPN? Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:00 PM PDT Hello all, I'm new to "networking" but I'm not really new to software, tinkering and engineering. Here's the general details: Location: Japan. Home is only about 850 square feet (It's a 3 bedroom new construction condo in Japan where homes are usually smaller but more dense). It's also single story. We have fiber, about 1 gbps down and 500 mbps up. Currently using some $100 ASUS router I got at a PC store. I flashed it, but I'm still not happy with it. I don't want to use something that requires wires going from one room to another. However, my apartment does have an ethernet connection in my office, and the actual modem supplied by our network provider is at the entrance of our home, but I can install the router in my office, which is in the center of the entire house. Devices: Wife's MBP, my gaming desktop, 2x MBP, 1x iMac Pro, two Apple TV's and one smart TV. We also have a few iPads, three iPhones and 1x Android phone. Occasionally people come over and we want to have WiFi speeds that hold up even with occasional higher load. DIY VPN: When we leave overseas, we want to be able to use our home network as a VPN. Nord and other private VPN's don't work for the purposes I need. It needs to be encrypted. We don't have data caps with our network provider, so we're not worried about that. However, I'm curious if anyone has recommendations? Is the router provided VPN through DD-WRT sufficient enough? We would at most access the VPN with two devices, never more than that. Remote troubleshooting: I would want to be able to take care of any issues on this network even if I'm across the world. I figure once I can get access to the internal network, I can probably access router settings that way, but what about remote reset? When you build a more high end network, does the whole "unplug and plug back in" the router nonsense to fix a slow network go away? Should I use a smart power switch and hope it comes back online if I'm overseas? I do have a friend in the area who will have a key to my place so if things get really messy, he will drop by, but that's limited to weekends and I'd feel bad asking him. Priorities:
As you can see, I'm not super worried about speed, as much as I am about being able to access the network remotely and its ability to support a VPN. Devices I'm looking at: I had been considering Eero, but it seems to be heavy on locking features behind paid subscriptions, and doesn't offer VPN support directly. I was thinking something like ASUS ZenWiFi AX? It supports OVPN, it's mesh with one extra access point, so I could use the ethernet wall port that connects to my living room to spread connection between two areas of the house. [link] [comments] |
Having slow Speeds but disconnecting and reconnecting fixes it Posted: 31 Oct 2021 06:50 PM PDT On my pc with Wi-Fi my speeds drop pretty low, but whenever I disconnect and reconnect it goes back to normal for a little bit; sometimes it remains constant but often times it just drops back down. Turning off bluetooth gave me constant speeds for a little while, but now it's just back to the constant dropping in speed even with bluetooth off. I don't think it's a problem with my network because every other device seems to work fine. Any suggestions to fix this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2021 05:28 PM PDT Hello so I have 20 mbs adsl internet (which is actually 13 to 15 mbs) I only use ethernet and and pretty much my ping is always fine ( 40 to 80ms ) even when other wifi users use YouTube or just anything apart from Netflix and downloads then ping spikes start or straight up 300 to 1000 ping. I asked them to limit their internet so that it would be more fair to me but they refused. In the past I used selfish net to limit their bandwidth but for some reason it doesn't work anymore it doesn't recognize any other device apart from mine. same with net limiter and other software. Do you have any advice apart from buying a good router to limit their bandwidth or upgrade the internet or get fiber (doesn't exist where I live) Will a new "good" router even help here ? I feel like yeah ( but maby this is more of a fiber vs adsl kind of advantage or maby neither idk I just want to spend money I don't have on a new router to have the same result) cause gaming doesn't require a lot of internet and I feel like that's why I am being ignored compared to Netflix and downloads that require a lot of data speed like it would be better at distributing the internet ? or something idk I feel like I am completely ignored by the modem when I play games, I can watch YouTube videos normally but cant play games makes 0 sense. Should I get a new router or a new modem router 2in 1 thing but a decent one ? Just some remarks in case they are important: I am the only one that uses ethernet, I have a shitty d link modem router box 2in1 kind of deal, I just want to have nice ping to enjoy dota so if there is a way to worsen wifi speed a little maby in the advanced wireless settings like beacon period transmit power or maby make it prioritize LAN over wifi or something. Switching to Linksys EA9500 as router with CenturyLink dropped speeds Posted: 31 Oct 2021 01:42 PM PDT Hey all, I had a Zyxel C110Z as my CenturyLink modem (gigabit fiber through ONT) and I decided to use PPPoE and VLAN 201 tagging with my Linksys EA9500 router/access point to remove that CenturyLink provided router from the equation, and I dropped from close to 700Mbps speed via wifi to 200Mbps... Any ideas why this happened? I had the EA9500 upstairs as an access point/switch combo, but replaced it with a TP Link access point and moved the Linksys as the router/access point for the basement, but my speeds went way down. I was under the assumption that my speeds would increase by removing the Zyxel C1100Z. [link] [comments] |
Ethernet installation in house Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:28 PM PDT Currently looking for a way for better speeds/ping. The options I've found are installing Ethernet (best option), installing Coax for moca (2nd best if price isn't an issue, not a fan of the price though), mesh network (worsr ping, better range), or grabbing a TP-link AX11000 for $250. I'm leaning towards mesh or Ethernet installation. How much would getting Ethernet installed throughout a medium sized home for select rooms cost (on average) or could the end user do it easily and cheaply? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:22 PM PDT I am with Bell ( Canada ) and on a Gigabit plan ( both upload and download). I have a home setup with Bell router HH2000 ( in bridge mode ) >>>>Tplink Er065 Router( PPOE configured with provider settings) >> Switch >>>>----- OC200 Controller and multiple access points. The speeds are barely 1/3rd of actual ones comparing if I just use HH2000 as the router Any suggestions 😌?? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:21 PM PDT Hi All, Have my Asus XT8 home network setup, working perfectly both wired and wireless all through the house. My wife and I have noticed that occasionally when we pick up our phones (Galaxy s21 and S20) that our wifi shows full signal, with the exclamation point (connected, no internet) this is despite the fact the internet works perfectly on the phone even with the error showing. All other wireless devices through the house work perfectly, no dropouts that I have ever witnessed. Any ideas on a solution? It's more an annoyance rather then a major problem. TIA [link] [comments] |
Looking for advice on upgrades with regard to plaster walls Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:20 PM PDT Hi Homenetworking, I've been commiserating about this for too long. I've read as many posts here as I could about plaster and wifi issues. Current setup is a Synology RT2600 (located in center of basement in a networking closet) and 3x MR2200's (one almost centered upstairs with two on the 1st floor - one in the front of the house and one in the back) in a 3000 sqft long & narrow house made of brick and filled with plaster. Spectrum Cable on WAN1 / Verizon 4g LTE Home on WAN2> Synology RT2600 > Aumox Unmanaged PoE Switch > 3x MR2200s w/Trendnet PoE splitter. Also attached to PoE switch is Unifi CKG2+ & cameras. The issues I would like to resolve with current setup are lack of VLANs, PoE support, additional SSIDs (more than 2), and deadspots in the (1920's era) house due to brick and plaster in lath. There was a forum post by an employee about Synology SRM 1.3 supposedly coming sometime 2021 supporting VLANs and a third IoT SSID, but still MIA. The ideal solution would fix the above and include:
The Current options I am looking at:
Other Thoughts:
Bottom line, looking to get proper software features and fix deadspots more affordably. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
First time setting up home network, have a few questions. Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:16 PM PDT I will be moving soon and bought an access point system for the house. I have 3 Omada AX1800 access points, a JetStream POE switch and an OC200 hardware controller. I have a few questions about setting this up in a couple weeks:
Thanks to anyone taking the time to answer. Also, any advice for a beginner would be much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:14 PM PDT Hi! So obviously from the title, I need some help with my pfsense install. Currently, I have the pfsense-CE-memstick-serial-2.5.2-RELEASE-amd64.img installed onto my Protectli router/firewall. It boots into the menu no problem. Things I have tried: - booting using BIOS and UEFI - using different ISO files - using different file storage/partition types (zfs, ufs, manual drive config, auto drive config) - specifying port 80 or 443 - following tutorials - restarting web config using option 11 through the menu A little more on what the webpage loads to: The webpage loads to a blank white screen with no source code other than the basic html tags. Ive also installed the same version on a VM and it seems to have worked, as I was able to configure the configurator. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Unfortunately, none of these worked, so now im stuck. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thank you ------------------------------------------------------------------ P.S. Not sure if it matters, but I'm connected to the console port using rs232-usb and the provided rj45-db9 [link] [comments] |
Would going from an Asus ac87u to an ax3000 be a downgrade in any notable way? Posted: 31 Oct 2021 12:36 PM PDT I realize that the 87u is a higher "tier" though older. I only generally use one high bandwidth device at a time (plus various always active smart home stuff) so I'm not worried about a bunch of tvs doing Netflix at once, but I do some in Home Screen-streaming between devices frequently. Posted: 31 Oct 2021 06:16 PM PDT Hello everyone! I kindly request your advices for my home network. This is what I want to realize: plan Please, read also the notes. Be prepared, strange ideas are coming ... and english is not my first language! Current situation Due to awful bandwidth and unreliable ISPs... I need more ISPs. Problems are:
So I ask advices on what network device I should purchase. And yes, I read the guide "What should I buy?". I saw Ubiquity is often adviced. I noticed it is also quite expensive and I can't really compare to others because I am not sure about what device I need. Also, I would like to know -if possibile- which alternatives do I have. If there are any. More about that, here below. Plan and Questions I am planning to buy some sort of aggregation/load-balancing device. I know it is kind of impossible to aggregate 2 ISPs (I think I need a something like MPTCP and an external VPS). So a load balancer would be good. (1) Am I right? If yes (from now on, I suppose it is) I was thinking to buy TP-Link TL-R470T+ or TP-Link TL-R480T+ or TP-Link ER605 or Mikrotik hEX S. (2) Which one do you suggest? And why? (between TP-Link devices I cannot clearly understand the differences). However it doesn't have enough ports, so I need to attach a simple "something-else" to realize the plan in the picture. (3) The "something-else" is it a switch or a router? Do you have any suggestion on brand/model? (for the intended use I think, a 20 bucks switch will do what I need, but not really sure). (4) What about security? Do I need a firewall within the load-balancer? Or 3 external firewall devices, one for each ISP? To this router/switch I need to connect: -one or two wifi access points (concrete wall, yuck!!). I would like the device connecting to the AP to automatically "switch" over the other AP when the signal is weak, without the need of reconnecting (I don't know exactly how this is called, but I would say it is the same of the handover among different BTSs in the GSM network). (5) Can you advice some brand/model on good WiFi AP and what feature should I look for? -another PoE switch to supply the CCTV-IP-Camera (they need a common 12V power supply, but are also PoE cams). Since the IP-Cams phone home, I read somewhere that I should put them in a VLAN. (6) Is it correct? Can you suggest an appropriate PoE switch. (7) If I put them in a VLAN, where I create the VLAN? On the PoE switch? On the other router/switch? On the load-balancer? And do I need a special configuration for other devices to access to the video-stream? ie, a phone in the wifi network can see what's happening on the cam Price range As cheap as possible (I spend already a lot for damn ISPs!!). But I want a good and flexible load-balancer, because it is "the big brain" (see the intended use) Expected bandwidth usage
Intended use Ideally I would like for "the load balancer" to sum the bandwidth of each ISP, but I don't think it is really possible (I really don't want an external VPS). So it should be selecting automatically the fastest between the ISPs connected. Another point (or question) is, if I am downloading a torrent than it would be able to really aggregate the bandwith, right? Because in this case the aggregation happens at the application level (?). Connections * PSTN connection (ISP1): is around 10 Mbps/ 1 Mbps; stable speed; interruptions not frequent; public IP, dynamic IP. * WAN-WLAN connection (ISP2): from 0 to 60 Mbps/ 0 to 20 Mbps; NOT stable speed; frequent interruptions; static IP behind CG-NAT. * LTE connection (ISP3): not really known, I think very similar ISP2. I still have to buy the modem and find a suitable ISP. Notes (maybe useful)
Sorry for the wall... And thanks for your advices! (edit: typo, format) [link] [comments] |

GT-AX11000 and WAN speed validation Posted: 31 Oct 2021 04:51 PM PDT I have my GT-AX11000 connected to a Motorola modem MB8611. It's DOCSIS 3.1 and when I run a speed test from the modem directly I get speeds about 900ish. However, once I connect the same cable to the router 2.5Gb port and run a speed test from the router itself I get speeds of 650ish. I have wifi off when running the speedtest and only the laptop connected. What could be causing this? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
1st time post please don't murder. Subject is powerline and wifi in detached garage. Posted: 31 Oct 2021 12:38 PM PDT Ok so I just installed a powerline network from my router (in house) and linked it in the detached garage to hard wire into my tv. I would like to have the option however to be able to get wifi in my garage that is dependable. Right now I get signal but it's spotty. Can someone tell me if I can utilize the powerline in my garage and maybe hook up a second router or a velop node and it be able to give wifi in my garage? The router I have is a linksys mr8300 that is compatible with the mesh wifi nodes. **what's a clean way to get wifi in my garage? Ps. Already tried the more expensive velop option and was still not getting dependable wifi in garage. [link] [comments] |
Mobile router with more WiFi power? Posted: 31 Oct 2021 09:49 AM PDT I use a GL.iNet GL-AR150 router in my pickup truck along with a 4G modem and large OTR antenna to provide a reliable internet connection almost anywhere I go. It works well when I'm in my truck, but even with an external WiFi antenna, the signal drops off pretty rapidly when I step away. The maximum power of the 150 is 18dBm. I was thinking of the GL-AR300M which has two antennas* and 20dBm. While the power goes up by nearly two thirds, I was wondering if there was a more powerful option out there? Maximum legal power is 30dBm, and maximum legal EIRP is 36, my antenna has a 4.5 dBi gain so even a full power router should be fine legally. I guess I could always just use a regular router, a separate 4G modem takes care of the actual mobile connection, but most are so big. I don't need ultra high speed cutting-edge 802.11 protocols, I'm more focused on range, almost everything I do, and foresee myself doing doesn't need a tremendous amount of bandwidth/speed. *Question now about the antennas. For a router that uses two antennas, should both be equal? I currently only have room for one external antenna so even if I just went with something like the GL-AR300M-EXT, I'd have one connected to the external one, and the other one just bent down at the router. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:59 AM PDT Symptoms the last few days - Incoming teleconferencing video freezes (I'm told my outgoing video is fine) - Packet loss indicator in Fornite (ranges up to 10%) on download only, upload has 0 packet loss - Need to refresh page when web browsing to get content - Watching Twitch streams cut out or pause for a few seconds Setup - Fiber to home 500/500 - Home Hub 3000 with Bell ISP - Currently hard wired to router from PC (tried different PC, wires, ports, etc..) ALSO tried - Bypassing Home Hub 3000 by plugging the SFP to a Netgear gs110tp, then sending an ethernet to an Asus router WAN...this gave the same results which leads me to believe the issue if not my hardware, Unless the SFP or Fiber cable is defective. Did some tests with PingPlotter but I'm not familiar enough to know if this is conclusive. Called Bell technical support. Because the speed is fine they refused to escalate and let me speak with a level 2 tech. Before I call back is there anything I'm missing here? other tests I can perform? [link] [comments] |
Preventing Wi-Fi Deauthentication Attack Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:52 AM PDT Will a strong WIFI password be effective preventing WIFI deauth attack?
