Giving Bing a chance since it’s the default on Edge…..

For anyone confused by my last post, this is what I was trying to achieve. For anyone who agreed this should be a feature, here is the github project called FileMeta that allowed me to achieve this...

Automatically Hide the Taskbar For Tablet/Desktop Mode

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 08:46 PM PDT

In Windows 10, you could automatically hide the taskbar based on whether you were in tablet or desktop mode. It made sense for me because I use the stylus in tablet mode and don't want to have the bar on the bottom to contend with. It seems like this feature has been taken away, which doesn't make much sense to me. Does anyone know if I am just looking in the wrong place or if there are any workarounds?

What happened to the resolution of this screen? I made the mistake of trying to troubleshoot Word and selected "Program starts up in small window (640x480) and won't switch to full screen", now it is stuck like this. Am I just overlooking something obvious?

An appeal to anyone upgrading hardware for Windows 11

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 01:05 PM PDT

I am a die hard linux hippy and even I've noticed this stuff about Windows 11 hardware requirements. Sure some of you will do this alleged registry workaround but I have an appeal to those of you who will upgrade:

See if you can do something useful with your machine before throwing it away.

When I was younger I'd use Christmas and Birthday money to get what was last year's pretty high end stuff at "kids-can-afford" prices, and using a 10 year old PC would be unthinkable then.

We are in the era of "stuff not getting better" - in fact I write this on an i7-940xm and do most of my work on an i7-3930K [via ssh] (a Sandy Bridge, i7-2xxx but Intel marketing) - at the price I got it at given it'll be mostly idle this was sensible, not crazy!

So if you are upgrading, please at least consider not throwing away your CPUs, your DDR3 - these things at least could be useful.

This is quite a recent thing, honestly it is still weird to me that 10 year old parts can be useful but seriously they can be. This really would have been unthinkable 10 years ago.

    https://i.imgur.com/gO6lEiF.png

This is a slide I ripped off an Intel presentation, the gains recently have largely been in performance per power; while an interesting topic and happy to go into it, I'll spare those of you who don't care.

Please have a look at what you can do; it really could be worth it. For example the Sandy Bridge i7 I use for work - it only idles a little worse than Skylake or Haswell, cost me 200 of my local currency and it'd take like 75 years of use before the cost of the power savings would make not getting it worth while (I'm hoping for another 5-7 years) - it truly is a capable machine, AVX2 isn't that life changing and I have an i7-6700 behind me that I don't use.

There have got to be 100s of millions of PCs out there that will be left behind, some of those being put to use might reduce demand for chips - wouldn't that be a thing! (This isn't meant sarcastically but I confess I cannot read it genuinely)

ED: Don't forget ebay and Craigslist or gumtree or whatever exist, seriously DDR3 sticks can go for a good bit (especially the 8gb sticks) - and second hand Intel is worth a lot. I will admit though that fx-8350s wont be in high demand.

Does anybody know what this ring symbol at bottom left of my screen means and how to remove it? I recently upgraded to windows 11. Any help would be appreciated.

    Installing Windows XP on RAM!?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 02:52 PM PDT

If Windows 7 was still viable (secure, stable, etc), would you be using it or would you still go with a newer version of Windows?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 11:05 AM PDT

An interesting question, I think. I think it is still very viable, much more than XP. Unfortunately, some people think their PCs would explode if they switched to 7...

Paste file where I click on desktop, not in grid?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 02:37 PM PDT

I've flaired this as Question (not help) but I'm not quite sure what distinguishes seeking answer to a question from seeking help.

Anyway, when I copy and paste a file onto from an explorer window onto the desktop, in aligns to the grid, regardless of whether "Align icons to grid" is selecting from the context menu. Here is the Question:

Is it possible through regedits or otherwise to have Windows paste my file where I click the desktop?

Options for secure, remote access to a work machine?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:36 AM PDT

Is it possible to securely and remotely access a windows machine while it is still in operation? I was talking to a software guy and he was telling me that this is possible with windows but not while someone is using the machine that's being remotely accessed and that it's something that linux is better with.

Point of clarification: not looking for something that provides remote access to help someone in real time (like tech support), but to be able to access a work machine remotely whenever and wherever needed, including when it is in use. We are using windows 10 pro.

    Video player with YouTube-like controls?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 12:33 PM PDT

    Hi

I'm looking for a good video player with controls similar to YouTube

Specifically pressing arrows to directly skip forward or backward for a few seconds (without holding another key like Ctrl or Shift). If there isn't one, is there a player that can be configured easily to do this function? Thanks

    Backup software for windows?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 12:03 AM PDT

I'm a mac user and I really like the Time Machine backup software. It backs does a full backup of your system and backs up every change to the system on an hourly basis in a very efficient manner. Then if there's a problem, you can go to an exact time on a specific day and restore the system's state. Is there anything backup software like this for windows?
