Buying laptop from US to use in EU

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 03:55 AM PDT

Basically, my relatives are planning to visit my family that live in US. I'm also on the lookout for the new laptop. Some laptops like for example XPS is way cheaper there than here in Poland. I was wondering if it's worth the hassle of actually refusing the 2-year warranty that EU guarantees for me in order to get a cheaper laptop. (the box of the laptop will be left in the US, so it could be transported through the border without tax.)

    Price in US: ~$1,099.99 Link

    Price in PL: ~$2,207.30 Link

    Laptop with many cores ($1600)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 04:33 PM PDT

This laptop will be used for games and programming.

Due to a special use case, having more cores will be very convenient.

It doesn't need an especially fancy graphics card, but it does need one.

Is there any laptop with unusually many cores in the $1600 range? Price is pretty flexible if there is something good.

Laptop for Topaz Labs video enhancer

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 04:24 AM PDT

I purchased an Acer that had a good sale going ( A515-43-R5RE ) and l really like it for general purpose use. I recently wanted to start enhancing a bunch of older home videos and dvds, so I'm trying out topaz labs editor, but I noticed it is fairly slow. My laptop seems to meet the minimum recommended settings, so I was thinking of upgrading the ram but I don't know whether that alone would make a difference or if I should just return this laptop and get one that's more geared for the task.

I'm looking for suggestions on what to do, and if getting a better laptop is recommended, what specs should I be on the lookout for? I would like to stay in the $500 range if at all possible.

Looking for a long lasting Emulation laptop for $800 USD or less

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 04:20 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $800 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No thanks

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

No idea what form factor is. Performance is important, I put my computer to Sleep sometimes, and would like it to wake up relatively quickly. Build quality is a must, I would rather not buy another laptop for 3-5+ years. It's really not going to be unplugged very often, so idc about battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not very important, as I won't be carrying it may places.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

My Current laptop is 15, so no smaller than 15 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Honestly going to be using this mainly for emulating and watching videos, as well as skype/teams video calls. Would love to be able to use Dolphin, Citra, Project64, DeSmuMe, etc. I really don't care about PS1/2, xbox, or Wii Emulation, and my understand is those are pretty difficult.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Pokemon USUM/Samus Returns, LoZ OoT/MM (3DS), Smash Bros Meele, Paper Mario Thousand Year Door and Super Mario Sunshine (Gamecube/Dolphin), Zelda games, etc. I really don't care about 4K graphics or anything, as long as it's smooth FPS, but I'm not terribly familiar with numbers. I'm used to PS4 regular and Switch, so no less than that?

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Multiple USB ports would be great, and a DVD drive would be really really nice. Doesn't need to do Bluray or anything like that.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Basically what I've said already. Am looking to upgrade, would like to finally emulate lots of games, and not need to wait 5 minutes every time I turn on my computer to watch a simple YouTube video. If $800 is super high or low, let me know. Black Friday deal would be the best? But idk how realistic that is.

Suggest a laptop under ₹1,00,000 (~$1300) for graphic design, video-editing, animation, etc. [India]

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 04:16 AM PDT

Hi guys! I'm looking for a recommendation for my cousin. I work in advertising and use a Macbook Pro myself, but it's out of my cousin's price-range. She's starting school for graphic design and VFX. The laptop should last her at least 4-5 yrs.

If you're curious why I'm the one asking, it's because she asked me for recs. I'm asking around and doing my own research. We'll see if the list we come up overlaps at all. I'm also helping pay for it as her birthday gift.

I have some idea about what specs I'd recommend, but without having actually used the device, it's tough to be certain.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      Under 1 lakh.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Don't care what it looks like, but no dingy hinges? I'm hoping for i7 (or equivalent) and up, at least 12GB RAM, with a decently NVIDIA or Iris.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Video editing, photo editing, basic animation. So, the Adobe Creative Suite, Maya, at least.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A touchscreen would be nice, but not necessary. Most of those aren't good enough for illustration anyway. Lots of wobbly lines.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm open to suggestions about specs too. It shouldn't crash while running Premiere Pro, Photoshop, etc. It shouldn't die in a couple years.

Absolutely open to buying used, I'd prefer something that's 13" and relatively portable but am open to going up to 15". Not really a heavy gamer, but all I have is a Mac right now and I'm really hurting on the games scene. Would love to be able to run some less intensive games smoothly. Thanks

[DE] Need an opinion on a specific gaming laptop (MSI Katana GF76 11UE-058)

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 12:38 AM PDT

Hey fellas! In my search for a new laptop i have stumbled upon an MSI Katana GF76 11UE-058.

The offer i have received is at exactly 1000€ for a lightly used machine by a private owner.

I am going to need it for anything ranging from mid time gaming sessions (say max 3 hours on the weekend), work & browsing, Blender 3D modeling and video editing (also mainly on Blender).

I care relatively little about battery life and weight, but from what i'm seeing display might also be underwhelming on this laptop, which is deffo a bummer.

    • Any suggestions on what to do to test the machine during inspection?
    • What do you thing of the 1000€ price on this particular model?
    • I have never owned an MSI product before, only HP and Asus. Is there anything i should be aware of?

      $1600 Cad

Preferably not as I want it to last throughout university years and preferably work as well
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I plan on going into mechatronic or mechanical or electrical engineering and I think it would be easier if I could get a touchscreen which i would be able to write on with a pen
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
As long as Im not carrying a brick
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Probably programs like CAD and Matlab
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Not really
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Touchscreen and I was thinking about a camera so I can just take pictures of the board and paste it into my notes
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I was considering the Windows Surface Pro 7 because it has that rear facing camera that I wanted but I was wondering if its better to just get a different laptop and then attach a webcam to take pictures? Also the pro 7 im not too big a fan of the keyboard so would i be able to use my own bt one

I want a laptop that can play some (mostly older) games, and that I can use for music production. Willing to buy used/refurbished items.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 07:12 PM PDT

Hi, I have a 10 year old desktop, that is extremely slow, and I want to get a laptop. I live in the United States, and I want to spend just a few hundred ideally, but if that's not possible, I can save more.

I would like a laptop with Windows, as that is what I need for my job. I'm not that concerned with form, as long as I can put in my backpack, I'm fine.

I would like to play some older video games on it. I play mostly early 3D platformers (Ratchet and Clank, Crash Bandicoot, Sonic Adventure, Jet Set Radio, etc.). I would like to play some more recent platforming games (Cuphead, Crash 4, I wanna play Bomb Rush Cyberfunk when it comes out), but I don't really have a need to play any big MMOs or any multiplayer games or anything like that.

I also want to use it for music production; I'm planning on buying an SP404, and will do most of my stuff on the 404. But, I would still like to be able to edit some stuff when I'm done in Ableton.

My priorities are as follows:-Work (I'm an online tutor)

    -Music Production

    -Video Games

I'm willing to buy something that I can upgrade later, too.

Heavy gamer and for web development/app

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 09:25 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Around 2000 Canadian dollar. I might need more budget for extra keyboard and mouse if i wanna play games.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I prefer fast performance, If im doing coding i open a lot of tabs(7) with different apps open. Im not sure what is the standard time for using laptop with playing games. But the more battery life better.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not much important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I heard preferably should be 15" inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I wanna play PUBG, DOTA and bluestack app, for my coding i usually use codesandbox , VS code, for photo editing maybe adobe photoshop.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Im not really sure whats the standard regarding the settings, but usually i use less if the gadget cant hold the graphics and if it becomes laggy or too much loading. But maybe I'll be playing PUBG or dota

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

If the keyboard is nice and soft and strong enough for me to use while playing then i'll take it , but if not. Then i'll just buy another keyboard. I like high quality graphics. And camera built in would be nice.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Im not sure if im called heavy user maybe someone can tell me if i am. Im not sure what kind of CPU works best for games. And i heard i can use i5 or higher intel core for better performance. I prefer 16GB or higher memory if budget fits in. Would love to have 512GB -1TB SSD. I got lots of photos and videos i need to save so im looking for higher memory. Im not sure if i should better have the 512GB then some data can be save to hard drive. I was actually having trouble deciding if i should get apple brand laptop or dell or other laptop out there that is good for my budget and needs.

Thank you for response. Much appreciated.

A laptop for a university student preferably under $850

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 09:19 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
฿ 28K - 30K, I live in thailand so its baht I guess. I don't mind buying from international sites tho, and am open to any suggestions
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Nope, I'd like a new one please
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Well I've been searching for a convertible/2-in-1 so far, but apart from the HP envy x360 I haven't found anything I'm interested in. As for performance, anything moderately fast? Lul, I'm not well versed in laptops. As for battery life, 8-ish hours should be okay
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Pretty important since I'm gonna be lugging it around campus
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-14inch yup
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Nope, as far as I know, I won't be doing anything too heavy since I'm a business major
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Valorant and just enough where I don't get mad with it. It'll be my first gaming exp so I don't know about the other requirements
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I do need a backlit keyboard and if possible, I'd prefer smth where the screen can be rotated. Build quality should be enough where it doesn't break in my bag or with a few tosses as I can be careless sometimes.
I use the touchpad a lot too so one with a good response maybe? Fingerprint reader is also alright
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
If it comes under budget I'd like a stylus feature too, but its not necessary imho. Smth that doesnt overheat too fast too, I'm not really sure

I'm a novice and that's why I'm here asking the pros. I'll be using this laptop for video editing and remote work. I teach zoom classes often and use Microsoft office regularly. I generally use my laptop at home and don't take it out much. I really value, storage, quick processing and reliability in a laptop. I'm planning on keeping this laptop for a long time.

    Laptop reccs

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 12:19 PM PDT

Hello, I'm looking for a good laptop that can download and process things fast. My current laptop is a Lenovo ideapad running on windows 10. It lags a lot and sometimes just freezes indefinitely. My disk usage almost always at 100% and I've removed numerous unnecessary files from my computer. My computer storage space is only 50% fill. And when I download games from Steam, low end pc games like left 4 dead 2, the verification time takes up to over an hr and sometimes it says that it'll take up to 6 days. With all these problems, and Black friday coming up soon, im hoping to find a good laptop that will be able to solve my current problems, as well as be able to handle some light gaming. Thank you!

My current laptop is a Lenovo and I am looking at Lenovo machines mainly for my next laptop as well.

I found these two almost identical machines, but one of them has IPS screen, and the other comes with a WVA screen, Anyone any idea how good a WVA screen is compared to IPS?

Pricewise, the WVA machine is EUR 40 cheaper.

Also, something that I've read different things about: do these machines support usb charging?

Looking for a long lasting Chomebook for my mom

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $600 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    NO

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

high performance given it's a Chromebook. I want it to last several years. battery life not important because it won't move much away from the charger. build quality is not important. I do prefer plastic chassis over metal (it keeps the weight down and feels better)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

not very important. It's a Chromebook

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15 inches or above. no less

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Chrome browser, google photos, maybe google docs. would like to print and run android apps since I heard that's possible

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Bejeweled. other than that nothing

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

numpad is a must. i hate touchscreen. Would like to avoid 1/2 height keys like the up and down arrows you see on some keyboards. finger-print reader would be a plus. no on the optical drive. Need to plug in wireless mouse with usb dongle

I want to get a laptop for my mom. We haven't used chromebooks before but a few things about it appeal when I think of my mom as the user. * Auto update feature is a plus

    • She only uses her android phone and android tablet now. She used to use a windows laptop and she uses windows for work

    • All she does is browse Facebook, Pinterest, and shop on the internet. she used to play Microsoft Entertainment Pack on Windows XP and plays games like Bejeweled on her android devices

    • We keep laptops for many years so I'm looking for one that may be overkill right now so it will last a long time

    • she needs and uses a numpad a lot.

I've never used a Chromebook so I don't know if it's possible to have Facebook Messenger and Google Photos app pinned to her desktop; either as a native app or android app. I know she could always use the browser. Is there any native password manager apps on Chrome OS?

I have a raspberry pi 3 with pihole on my network. Will ad-blocking on my network affect Chrome OS updates or functionality?
