Lightweight laptop that can handle some software development?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 07:18 PM PDT

I'm a data engineer and would be working on my company laptop but my 8 year old MacBook is dying and I want one that can handle some light development projects while also being lightweight. I want to stay under $1000 and for it not to be from acer or apple (had horrible experience never again). It should run windows and be able to handle maybe one local VM and maybe some very light gaming. I'm also wfh for the foreseeable future so I want to do some travel and working eventually so I want it to be lightweight so I can carry it around. 13 or 15 inches for screens are both ok. I would like to buy new. Any suggestions?

What's ur suggestion? Lenovo Laptop 5 or 7i

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 02:52 AM PDT

Well, I have 2 offers for Lenovo Legion Gaming Laptops but I'm not sure which one to take.

The 1st device is the Legion 5 with Ryzen 5 5600H and the GeForce RTX 3060.

The 2nd one is the Legion 7 with i7 10th gen 10750H and an RTX 2070.

Both Laptops are in a similar price range

I'm also thinking about it because the 3060 consumes less power, but what is more important to me is which device is better suited for gaming?
For games like Warzone, Destiny 2, the upcoming Battlefield 2042, some Apex, New World etc.

    Looking forward to your opinions

I want to ask about the graphics card openGL 3.0

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 02:14 AM PDT

I know that pcs are objectively better than laptops for gaming but right now I need a laptop so I can take it at work.(my current laptop's screen broke so I am getting a new one).

I don't plan on buying something very expensive(maybe around 300-550 euros),I just want to know if openGL3.0 is some super good graphics card or it is a joke graphics card like the intel HD graphics my previous laptop had.

there are a bunch of laptops out there and I want to know if I can find something that least comes close to an openGL3.0.

the reason I am asking about this particular graphics card is because I tried to instal dolphin emulator on my previous laptop and downloaded pokemon colosseum and it kept crashing.

the ps2 emulator and the metal gear solid game I downloaded ran like shit.

I was hopping that I may be able to get some low budget laptop that can run these 2 emulators.

if not I will look what laptops I plan to buy and come later.

    about my form:

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget:300-550€(greece)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used? no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? no
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't care that much
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. nope
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run? yes I do gaming, and I already mentioned the ps2 and gamecube emulators
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? it's not really important right now,I just want to know if I can play these 2 emulators with my budget or not.if I can't I will get the best I can get.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? no
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -no thoughts.

Trying to find a basic laptop for a college student - 400-600 USD

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 11:59 PM PDT

I'm helping a relative get a new laptop for college. It'll be their first laptop, and first year in college. No need for anything special, but I want to make sure it'll be fast and reliable.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $400-600
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Maybe?
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance>build quality>battery life>size. Although I may be wrong here, I'll update if they want something different.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Somewhat? It shouldn't be huge, but it needn't be an ultra-portable.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15.6" is the max, I would think 13" is the smallest?
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No. Basically Word, Chrome, and maybe spotify? Maybe not even that.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      No, I don't think so.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm just trying to make sure it's something that'll last a few years, won't give them any problems, and won't feel slow as molasses.

Some ideas I've had so far:
Costco seems to have some great options in the $500-$650 range. Stuff like:

    https://www.costco.com/hp-15.6%22-touchscreen-laptop---11th-gen-intel-core-i5-1135g7.product.100764365.html

    https://www.costco.com/hp-14%22-laptop---11th-gen-intel-core-i5-1135g7---1080p.product.100699352.html

    https://www.costco.com/lenovo-ideapad-3-15.6%22-touchscreen-laptop---amd-ryzen-5-5500u---1080p---abyss-blue.product.100767806.html

Are these any good? I like the idea of Costco for their free extra year warranty.

I saw these on another post: https://smile.amazon.com/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Processor-Graphics-82KT00AMUS/dp/B08YKDYWK5

    https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gateway-15-6-FHD-Ultra-Slim-Notebook-AMD-Ryzen-5-3450U-16GB-RAM-256GB-SSD-Tuned-THX-Audio-Fingerprint-Scanner-1MP-Webcam-HDMI-Cortana-Windows-10-Home/977539259

    Thank you!

Need a new Laptop for my masters. Buying from India. Any suggestions?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 03:26 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
80,000 INR , Country of purchase -India
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      New please
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not that important but would be a plus for sure

15+ preferrably. 14 would also do if all the other stuff is really good for the price
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Yes. CAD , programming like Python, MATLAB, Simulink, R etc. Also CFD and Finite Element analysis. Not much gaming. Formula 1 for sure. Maybe GTA V or Fortnite in the future. Not that much into it tbh.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I want to play Formula 1. Not sure what settings that needs. Dont know much about it. Reasonable requirements would do. Whatever fits in the budget or slightly up.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
C-type port would be helpful and also LAN port is a must. Touch screen is not that important.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I am going to use it for my masters in Wind Energy. So a lot of mechanical and programming stuff would go into it. Would ideally want it to last my entire masters and at least a year or two after my job. So maybe 4 years, I guess.

Help me find a laptop for my brother !

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 03:10 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:1000 euros max, to be bought in france
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?- If its a very good deal fro a trusted supplier why not.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?- He doesnt want a 2 in 1, just a regular laptop. Battery life is quite important, but is not be all end all.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?- Weight is very important to him, as he often carries his laptop, 3 kg ( around 6 pounds max)
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.-13" min, bigger is a bit better
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.- He is specifically buying this new laptop because his job at the moment involves editing videos, and his current one does not allow him to do so. No CAD, and not really time for gaming, He uses Da Vinci as an editing software I believe.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?-No gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?- Do not think so
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The driving force behind me asking this here is my brother is very limited by his current laptop, and needs a new one. For reference, his current laptop is an Asus UX410U, with 4Go ram, 500G storage. Any help would be appreciated as I'm not a laptop pro ! Thanks

Would this laptop be good for college: photo/video editing and graphic design?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 03:04 AM PDT

    • Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3
    • 15,6", 1920x1080, 120 Hz display
    • AMD Ryzen 7 4800H (2,9 GHz, boost to 4,2 GHz), 8 cores
    • Nvidia GTX1650Ti 4GB
    • 512 GB SSD
    • Battery life: 5 hrs
    • Weight: 2,2 kg
    • Price: 860 euros (with discount), 1 year warranty

With performance I value decent portability and not being too loud. I'm mentioning this bc my previous laptop was a HP Zbook 17 G1, it wasn't portable at all and it was so loud my ears hurt after a while if I worked for longer than an hour. I want the new Macbook Air, but it's way out of my budget with the specs I need (live in Europe so Apple products are a bit more expensive here).

How's the color accuracy like? Are there any cooling/loud fan noise issues with this laptop? Anyone knows?

    Dell XPS 15 9560 vs newer 9510

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 12:58 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

Just wondering what people's opinions are on the following two scenarios:

    1. Buy new XPS 15 and hope there won't be quality control issues. But most likely I'll have to replace the laptop at least once or

    2. Replace battery of current XPS 15 9560 (there's 80% wear) for $80 and wait a year for the release of the new XPS and hope there'll be less quality control issues?

I can't buy a Mac and ThinkPads have even worse battery life than XPS.

    Thanks

    Laptop for online college?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 08:39 PM PDT

    Hi all!

I start college soon, and know nothing about laptops as I've never owned one (Always shared with siblings). I have absolutely no idea to buy and need some help.

I don't have too much of a budget, however if I can I'd like to stick under $1000 CAD. It should be able to run Microsoft programs as that is what my school uses. My school has also sent out a brief requirement with the following.

    -8GB of RAM

    -Microsoft Windows 10

    -Memory of 8GB

-Processor Intel i5 or i7 is recommended

I don't really know what any of that means, so if any of you could give some good ideas that would be great. Thanks! :)

Please convince me not to buy a M1 Air

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:20 PM PDT

So I'm a graduate comp sci student. I need a very powerful computer to train neural nets, to game, etc. So I have an awesome tower that I'm very happy with.

This means that my laptop needs are kind of unusual in my field. I don't need some spaceship-looking laptop. I don't even need a GPU, to be honest. If I really need one while away from home, I just use Google Colab or SSH into my tower.

What I do need tho, is something thin, light, very portable, with a great screen to read and write papers on, and with the biggest battery ever. I also need 4 cores or more, because while I don't train neural nets on my laptop, I do run some thread-heavy jobs or compile some stuff.

The M1 Air is almost a perfect device for me. The battery life is insane, it's got a fuckton of cores, a good-enough gpu I probably won't use much, an awesome screen, and it's super thin. Let me stress that my main concerns are the battery life, and the light weight.

But I dislike Apple and its policies. I'd rather wipe my laptop and install Pop!OS on it, and the M1 doesn't support that.

Is there any other laptop that fits the same criteria for the same price or bellow? (And if you can find one that has stylus support, all the better, but it's not a requirement)

Every alternative I can find costs like twice the M1 Air, or only has 4GB RAM, or 2 cores, or huge bezels, etc.

Laptop for my first year of computer science studies

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:58 PM PDT

I was looking at a M1 Macbook Air because of the performance, longevity, battery life, and nice and portable design. I've still been struggling with the choice tho because it's still a gen 1 device and I'm scared to run into any problems. Another factor is because I don't know if my courses are gonna be mainly taught in windows or not... I'd like my first year of uni to go smooth, without any problems. The last thing I would want is for me to not be able to use certain programs because of my dumb choice of buying a gen 1 device. So I'm looking for people to give me a little bit of advice (am I worrying too much?) and maybe a windows alternative if you think it'd be better :)

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Around €1000 (Belgium).

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Not really.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    All of these are important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Pretty important as I'm going to be carrying it around a lot of the time.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

At least 13 inch, not bigger than 15 inch.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Primarily university use, so coding and stuff related to it.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard is always a plus, but I don't really care for other extra's.
