Do websites running as PWAs run faster than websites in a standard browser window?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 08:11 PM PDT

So most websites have an option to run them as progressive web apps (PWAs) which can be pinned to start, as shortcuts, and open like programs on the taskbar.

I'm curious though, on Windows, do they run faster than if you were to use the website or web app in a standard browser window?

How to easily crash the Settings app on Windows 11

Who actually uses the windows store? Are the young people these days using it or what?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 01:59 PM PDT

I never used the windows store before switching to linux, and I don't understand the thought that it would actually be successful when you can install programs on windows easily. I'm not trying to brigade (disclosure I now use linux), but I'm just curious. I'm 33 years old without kids and is/was tech savy, but installing programs isn't hard anyway. Are kids these days going to become less tech savy and rely on software stores instead of installing programs?

One note: When searching for a cheap laptop to install linux on, I found laptops that are Windows S, that only allow apps from the app store. Is this going to become a thing?

Windows 11 Context Menu yuck, please let me have 10's menu!

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 03:09 PM PDT

Ok I bit the bullet and reformatted my PC for Windows 11 after checking out on a dual OS install first.

Was very happy with 11 and decided to make the change

I like pretty much most things about 11 but the context menu, that has to go I mean every time I right click I have to open to the more options, please!!!

I looked for ways to go back to the classic context menu, none of them worked, I tried the registry override key and the explorer in separate process fixes, again they didn't work.

I'm on win 11 version 160 as on the 1st Sep.

Dies anyone know of a surefire way to bring back classic context menu on version 160?

Whats this for? Why do some apps use this and some use other folders?

Any main benefits or disadvantage of this?

I went back to Windows 10

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 12:35 AM PDT

The insider program ended for me. I got the dreaded Microsoft warning that my computers did not meet their requirements.

I did not have to buy a new key as I was able to link my computers with my Microsoft account.

I am glad to be back on Windows 10.

My final thoughts on Windows 11 are meeeeh. Not for me.

How can Windows knows that there is a licence on a laptop?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 08:01 AM PDT

Hi. I recently did a clean install of a linux distribution in an old laptop that had windows 10 (activated). The install deleted all windows files. Then after a couple of months i got bored and reinstalled windows 10 again, i thought it would ask me for a product key, but it didn't. It was activated right away. My question is how can windows knows that there was an activated version if i did a clean install of another OS.

Work around/fix for file explorer search not finding any results

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 09:50 AM PDT

I've been having a problem using the file explorer search box in Windows10 to find files on an 4tb external drive that gets removed and reattached on different computers. It sometimes returns no results, even when using asterisk which should return all files in that folder. Instead I get "no results..." message. I've tried rebuilding the index but even after the rebuild, the message is the same. What seems to fix it consistently is to change the location of the index. Not to be confused with the location(s) to be indexed.

    • Select the SEARCH tab in the file explorer
    • then select Advanced options on the top ribbon
    • you should see Change Indexed Location on the menu
    • below the Rebuild section you should see Index location, click the Select new button
    • I selected the \Search folder under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft; click OK

The search results are now returned as expected. I welcome any feedback if this did or didn't work to fix your similar search issue.

Changing UEFI embedded Windows license in a new HP laptop?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 09:21 AM PDT

Anyone know how to change the UEFI embedded Windows license in a new HP laptop?

So I ordered a HP Spectre x360 14t back in July and it finally got assembled this past week. I chose Windows 10 Pro. for the OS.

I'm looking at the same laptop this morning and it's now available to order with Windows 11 Pro. (would ship after October 05).

Is there any way an end user can change the UEFI's embedded Windows license?

I know the upgrade to Windows 11 is free, but I already have a new SSD to swap out once the laptop is received and I'd rather perform a clean install of Windows 11 (would create a USB installer using the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft). If I do though, will it activate as 11 Pro. by using the 10 Pro. key in the UEFI?

[Windows 11 Dev channel build 22000.168]

If you don't know what's the problem see this video.

I know this was posted many times before but this isn't a bug report. This is an attempt to do something. Please upvote this post (or the other one) in Feedback Hub for Microsoft to see it.

This issue was reported a month ago and still not even officially listed, not to say fixed. And by Microsoft response here, I'm not sure they are even aware of it. And it's a big issue!

Windows is the household OS. But is it really even bearable for everyday use, productivity and creative work?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 05:47 AM PDT

Lots of users would feel Windows is user friendly and is great for gaming. But from my experience of using windows for everyday tasks and creative software and workflow, I've realised how annoying every element of windows gets. Especially due to the unpersonalised interface design and never ending, continuous supply of bugs. Comment your thoughts on this, the customisations and fixes you do, or alternatives to have a stress free usage.

    Windows Subsystem for Linux

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:59 PM PDT

I am trying to use Windows Subsystem for Linux in Windows 11 Pro. I have installed Ubuntu which displays a terminal. I entered the script to install Nemo. Entered my password and it then proceeded to install. When completed it produced a notice that because the installation was insecure the install was terminated. I tried the same with other apps, with the same result.
I had to type the commands because the terminal would not accept Ctrl+V or Ctrl+Shift+V to paste.

    Any help will be appreciated.
