Linux Hey guys! Good day! I just got this boot error message and I didn't know what to do. Out of panic, I reinstalled linux mint on my laptop. My question is, what caused this boot problem? How can I prevent it? Is it a hardware issue? Because my laptop run well the last time I used it.

Hey guys, been trying to install my GOG purchase of BGEE for hours now using a variety of methods. I can install the game just fine, but it just wont execute. If I install via Lutris, when I hit play, nothing happens at all. If I install via the GOG installer, the terminal says I am missing 'libssl1.0.0.'

I have downloaded the right libssl files, tried both 32 and 64 bit and have added them to the game directory multiple times, but I am still met with the same response in terminal when I execute 'start.sh'

I am using the most recent version of Mint. If any of you Linux users out there have managed to solve this problem, I would really appreciate your knowledge! Thanks.

Unable to boot into Pop OS now

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 01:12 PM PDT

Hi! For some reason that I'm not aware of, I am unable to finish booting into Pop OS now. After entering my disk decryption password and pressing ESC to see the verbose output, it usually freezes on one of the following:

    • "Gnome Display manager…. Fully seeded"
    • "Gnome Display Manager…. changes"
    • "started dispatcher for systemd-networkd"
    • "bluetooth hci0 download fw command failed" < only saw once
    • "Wait until…apd is fully seeded…"

Which one it decides to hang on almost seems random. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Nvidia drivers and following the repair steps on System76's site but nothing made a difference.

Here's what I did the last time I was booted:

    • Built and installed this driver as well as all of the tools to build it: https://github.com/xtknight/vdpau-va-driver-vp9

    • Installed/uninstalled Chromium, degoogled Chromium, Chromium beta, and Brave browsers

    • Downloaded Slippi AppImage, ran the game

    • Followed the Linux installation steps on here: https://dolphin-emu.org/docs/guides/how-use-official-gc-controller-adapter-wii-u/

    • Downloaded a game from Steam that also installed the Proton stuff and other Linux things to make Windows games compatible After doing this it seems like hardware decoding in Brave stopped working (white screen on YouTube videos) despite after working a little bit earlier- disabling hardware acceleration in Chrome settings fixed it

    • Tried (and failed) to install this- said something along the lines of picking a file to patch, wasn't positive which one so pressed Ctrl+C: https://github.com/MrBollie/RME-Babyace-Pro-ALSA-Mixer-Patch

    • Tried restarting to fix the broken hardware acceleration, wasn't able to get past the places mentioned above where it freezes

sxiv does not open if terminal background is transparent

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 08:00 AM PDT

In .Xresources, if I write *.background: [80]#222222, sxiv does not open. But if it's just *.background: #222222, it opens.

This doesn't happen with imv, but does with sxiv.

    Can this be sorted?

    i3wm Media keys

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 09:59 AM PDT

Hello people. I have Manjaro i3 edition and i have a problem. I would like to ask how to make i3wm Media keys work. I already found scripts for it and my play and pause buttons work. The only things that don't work are the "next" and "previous" buttons. This is what doesn't work: "bindsym XF86AudioNext exec playerctl next" "bindsym XF86AudioPrev exec playerctl previous"

And i would be even more grateful if u could help me configure the Volume percentage. The volume works it's just that i have OCD and when i see that it goes up by 5 every press of the button but then after 30 it goes to 34 and so on it's really annoying.

    Thank you in advance :)

How to prevent Microsoft Teams application from starting up automatically at boot time on Ubuntu Linux?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 01:43 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I am running Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS I have two Microsoft Teams applications on my Linux PC., Microsot teams Insiders and Microsoft Teams Preview.

Both of them start up automatically at boot time. I want to start them up manually.

I tried running gnome-session-properties and there are only two programs there, "im-launch" and "SSH Key Agent". How do I prevent "Microsoft Teams" applications from starting up at boot time?

    Thanks

Hey can i get some help with this script assignemt for my class I am kinda stuck

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 12:58 PM PDT

its on scripts and ssh and these are the instructions my professor gave us. he also gave us some resources to "help" but they helped a little and I am kinda stuck with my script and not sure where to go next Here is what I have so far: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gfPALZuWVs1-nEBjnyEa0SmDskwJv3C1/view?usp=sharing

    1. Ask the user for the name/IP address of the server they wish to connect to. This will require reading information from the user and storing it as a variable.
    2. SSH into that machine based on the name/IP address the user enters above and run a series of commands, outputting that information back to the administrator's machine in a file. Make sure you have a script that will SSH to a remote machine, run a series of commands and grab their output, then put that output back in a file on the administrator's machine.
    3. Gather the system's hostname.
    4. Gather the system's OS information given from the 'cat /etc/\-release*' command.
    5. Gather the CPU information of the machine given from the 'lscpu' command.
    6. Gather the system's free memory information.
    7. Gather the system's hard disk drive information from the 'lsblk' command.
    8. Gather the system's IP addressing information from the 'ip a' command.
    9. Take all of that information gathered in #3 - #8 above and place/output it into a well-organized and descriptive text file named 'sysinfo-SYSTEMNAME.txt' where SYSTEMNAME is the name of the machine you connected to in #2 above. This output file should reside in the same location as your system-info.sh script (/home/username/scripts/ on the administrator's machine, not the remote machine). Then use of 'printf' statements and/or 'echo' statements with echo escape sequence options (see notes or external resources) to include line breaks, organizational markings, hashtag marks as separators, etc... in the output file. That will make the output file easier to read for you and other admins later.
    10. Your script should tell you, the system administrator, what it's doing when you connect to another machine and when it's finished gathering the information and has sent the output back to your machine.
    11. Run that script on your CentOS 8 VM, the one you're actually using to write the script. That means, when your script asks what is the hostname or IP address of the machine you wish to connect to, you'll enter your CentOS 8's hostname or 127.0.0.1, or the like to force an SSH connection to your machine. Since we don't have multiple machines in the same subnet (TealVirt doesn't do that), you'll have to use one virtual machine to act as two.

How do i get .desktop files use same environment variable as running from terminal?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 12:49 PM PDT

Hi, I have been setting up myself neovim and it works great when launching from terminal.

However, when using a desktop file to launch it, it has problems finding node from $path. When i launch neovim from desktop shortcut and do :!$PATH, there's no node to be found there.

Is there some way to use the same path as I use when I use my terminal?

    Here's the .desktop file code

    [Desktop Entry] Comment[en_US]= Comment= Exec=nvim %F GenericName[en_US]= GenericName= Icon=io.neovim.nvim MimeType=text/x-tex;text/x-pascal;text/x-moc;text/x-makefile;text/x-java;text/x-csrc;text/x-csrc;text/x-chdr;text/x-c++src;text/x-c++hdr;text/tcl;text/plain;application/x-shellscript; Name[en_US]=Neovim Name=Neovim NoDisplay=false Path= StartupNotify=true Terminal=true TerminalOptions= Type=Application X-DBUS-ServiceName= X-DBUS-StartupType=none X-KDE-SubstituteUID=false X-KDE-Username=MyName

Gnome crash upon opening the hot corner/app overview?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 11:59 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm on Debian 11 and my Gnome crashes almost every time I hover my mouse over the top left corner (press the 'special' keybind to open that program overview).

By crashes I mean I can't open any program and other keybinds don't work either - the only solution is a hard reset.

How can I fix it? I couldn't find anything on the internet except old posts from 2013. Anybody knows the answer? Thanks!

Arch Linux dual boot on multiple drives

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 07:49 AM PDT

Hi, I am trying to dual boot windows 10 and Arch Linux, but I'd prefer the Linux filesystem to be located on a different drive and retain the dual boot menu. I have gone through the install once a few hours ago but Linux doesn't list my drive with the EFI partition on it

Is there a way I can get it to list the partitions on another drive?

Note: I'm fairly new to Linux, I've been using mint in a virtualbox a little bit but quickly live booted an usb with Kali Linux but I haven't tried working with partitions in Linux before

Edit: I've found some help and got it to work! Turns out I had os-prober disabled by default in grub, after writing GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false to /etc/default/grub it worked

Hello Linux for Noobs Community! I have a crucial issue.

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 11:07 AM PDT

Hello everyone. I hope you all are doing well.

I'm here with an important issue.

I decided to install the System 76 Driver for Ubuntu. I decided to install it on Zorin OS 16 Core Version.

I updated most of the stuff according to the selected updates it gave me after installing it.

The issue is: It wants to eliminate extremely important programs such as:

GDM3 Gnome Shell Extensions Zorin Desktop Linux Modules Nvidia 470 Generic HWE 20.04 Nautilus Share Zorin Appearance Layouts Shell Core Zorin Desktop Session

It also says it doesn't need this important programs:

Gnome Session Bin Gnome Shell Extensions Gnome Startup Applications Linux Modules Nvidia 470 5.11.0-36 Generic

Because of that, I can no longer use the updates app for its purpose and I don't want it to remove those important programs. What should I do to solve this?

Thank you for your attention and/or answering this post.
