    Best fanless notebook/laptop/ultrabook/2-in-1 for Linux

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 12:14 PM PDT

Greetings! First post so please be gentle.

My Dell XPS 13 9365 2-in-1 has finally died, and I'm looking for a replacement. I would just get another XPS 13, but sadly the current generation is no longer fanless design. Budget is a non-issue, and I'm definitely looking for something high-quality (not a cheap Chromebook). Performance is not a huge concern, as I also have a Precision 15" with the Xeon CPU and Quadro GPU, for those kinds of tasks.

    Here are the specs of the XPS 13 I am replacing: Intel® Core™ i7-7Y75 CPU @ 1.30GHz × 4, Intel® HD Graphics 615, Memory 16gb RAM, SSD 256gb.

My totally non-negotiable number one priority: It absolutely must be fanless, passively cooled, with no air vents on the bottom.

From my research, the best option in the fanless market today, seems to be the MacBook Air M1, but unfortunately (as far as I know) the MacBook M1 is not a good choice for Linux. So what's my next best option, that is non-Apple and (above all else) totally fanless?

    ThinkPad E14 Gen 2 reviews?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 01:40 PM PDT

Hey everyone, so I've recently been looking at laptops for uni. I'm going to study Computer Science and want a laptop that can keep up with my workload (not sure how intensive this will be just yet though).

I've been looking at laptops with specs like 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD - I was originally looking at 8GB RAM and less storage but thought I might as well go for better specs now rather than regret it later.

I did have my eyes set on the Dell XPS 13 9310 but I can't really afford it right now. Instead, I found the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 which has the exact same processor and same amount of RAM + storage - it's just not as great in the looks or display departments. However, it's way more affordable for me and I appreciate the bigger screen size.

So I just wanted to ask here and see what you guys think. I've never owned a Lenovo before, I'm still on my first laptop which is a Dell and it's done great over the years. Will the ThinkPad be a good fit for my course or does anyone have any better suggestions?

If it helps, I'm based in the UK. TIA! :)

    Upgrade or buy new laptop

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 01:11 PM PDT

Hi I can't decide whether to buy I new laptop or upgrade my original one.

I currently have a Intel i5 6200 u (2.80 ghz), 8 gbs of ram, nvidia 940mx and 1tb HDD. I am able to put a 2.5mm sata SSD and 8 gbs more of ram.

In terms of buying a new one I have around 600 euros. I would like a SSD preferably 1 tb and a dedicated gpu. Also I will be using it for school work, light gaming (titles such as GTA V) and some light video editing. Any recommendations if buying is better than upgrading?

Any help appreciated, thanks a lot!

Looking for laptop recommendations for browsing and university work on the go

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 12:55 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Around £500

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

A decent battery life would be important, performance only needs to be adequate for browsing the internet and generally just editing stuff in word and PowerPoint, form factor and build quality (if it's not falling apart) aren't as important to me

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    I don't mind a big laptop

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15.3 inch would fit my purposes find, but if possible 17.6 inch would be great

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'm not going to do any heavy editing or gaming on this.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

If one has an HDMI port, that would be a good added bonus but I can do without it, also if it's possible to have an SSD In this price range that would be great too

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm mostly just looking to use this laptop for browsing the internet and university work on the go, just enough to do the job and not too fancy. Thanks in advance for your help!

REQUEST: USB-C PD laptop charger that's also a power bank (charges both batteries at once)

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 12:49 PM PDT

I'm looking for a power bank I can carry in my laptop bag that works to power my 60W laptop with or without AC power available. It needs to fully power the laptop via USB-C PD, not just charge it in standby, and when plugged into the wall it should fully power the laptop AND recharge its own battery. In other words, I'm looking for a single device that can replace my laptop charger and also provide backup power as soon as I unplug.

    Other nice-but-optional features:

    ⬛ wall charging (built-in plug)
⬛ additional charging ports for phones etc
    ⬛ wireless phone charging

Something like the Infinacore Pandora but with at least 60W PD output and a larger battery would be perfect. Thanks for any recommendations!

Wrong sub? I posted this in r/laptops as I figured this sub would have the most relevant knowledge, but please direct me to a better subreddit to ask this question if there is one!

    Can't find battery

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 12:33 PM PDT

I'm trying to find a new battery for latitude Toshiba laptop. I want a higher quality one. I thought I found a good one but the price was only $30. The battery only gave me like 45 minutes of power before needing recharged and fully crashed within a year. I can't fine the original battery on toshibas website. The laptop is around 8 years old but it runs perfectly so I'm trying to do what I can to keep it running. Does anyone know where I could find a battery?

    Quick & Simple Windows 10 S Mode Clarification Q?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 12:17 PM PDT

I'm sorry to be asking such a I'm sure obvious question to computer people especially in this stage of the game with 11 coming out, but I wanted to just triple check before I buy since I've read things are kind of unclear about the topic-

If I buy a computer in Windows 10 S Mode I definitely turn that off and it just becomes Windows 10 automatically?

    processor or ram

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 09:48 PM PDT

    lenovo: ryzen 7 5700U, 16gb RAM (unupgradable), 512gb SSD

    or

    hp: ryzen 5 4500U, 16gb RAM (upgradable), 1tb SSD

idk which one to choose. does processor>ram or ram>processor? which would be more worth it in the long run aka "future proof"?

both have the same os and graphics. prices are close to each other. some special use would be for programming and cad.

Any laptops with a keyboard like a Thinkpad T420?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 11:38 AM PDT

I want to get a new laptop/computer that didn't cost too much and wanted to try something that didn't have a chiclet style keyboard. I settled on a T420 because I really didn't need smth new and heard they were good for being sort of old. But my parents are dead set on me getting a newer laptop rather than second hand. Just wondering if there are any newer laptops still like that or if I'll have to get a mechanical keyboard to get anything other than a chiclet.😅

The problem with lenovo's ideapad gaming 3

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 11:16 AM PDT

When i first started using this laptop, the first thing that i noticed was the quality of the speakers, the sound was really quiet and unclear when compared to my older laptop but today i looked at the placement of the speakers and it turns out that whoever designed them is a moron, the sound was low because the speakers were facing outwards from both sides so the sound was naturally going everywhere except towards the user. This is really frustrating to me because i prefer to listen to music and watch movies using the speakers. Other than that, I have no complaints. I hope this helps nyone who might be interested in buying this laptop.

Acer Aspire 5320- trying to format

    Posted: 20 Sep 2021 10:33 AM PDT

I dug out my old Acer Aspire 5320 and trying to get rid of it. I have a local person who is collecting old laptops for parts. Data is already backed up so I'm trying to format the damn thing but can't figure out how to.

F2 gets me to settings but doesn't seem to do anything beyond that. A lot of guides/youtube/ancient forum posts say Alt + F10 but I've tried that a few times as well with no success.

FWIW, I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed.

Trying to format the drive straight from Ubuntu gives me a "drive is busy" error.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.
