Lol working remote has spoiled me!!! I can’t even fathom working in person anymore. Posted: 19 Sep 2021 12:09 PM PDT Right out of college I got a remote job, 1 year later I'm on to my second remote job with a 15,000 salary increase. I can't even imagine working in person. I used to think that it wasn't sustainable or reality but I think it is. Anyone else feeling this way? [link] [comments] |
What are your best tips or advice when doing an internship???? Posted: 20 Sep 2021 07:08 AM PDT I'm very thankful to land a paid internship doing application security for a well-known company. I'm wondering what everyone's best tips are when doing an internship? For example, I read in another post that you should keep notes everyday so you can keep track of everything you're doing. Network engineers, how much do you have to study to keep up with your job? Posted: 20 Sep 2021 01:10 AM PDT I'll expland on the question, right now i code for a big company but i'm pretty bored of the job. I was thinking about either going into data/analysis or a total switch into a junior networking position since i enjoy it a lot (i have expired ccna, its how i started years ago before moving into programming which was my field of study). My problem is that im 30yo right now and wanted some free time for family in the next decade and for what i see networking is always evolving (especially with a lot of things going to cloud somewhen in the future). So yea the dilemma is that i'm bored but i have a sure and cozy 20 years in front of me (software+angular should be enough, at worst i can put few tens of hours to learn React or whatever will be cool in 2030) while networking looks like pretty time intensive and way more stressful once you past the junior level (on call, 24h, overhours, etc). The idea of being 45yo, working 8 hours or more, get home and having to study the new release routinely isnt really exciting. Is that field not for me? [link] [comments] |
I need advice if what I’m doing is right career wise Posted: 20 Sep 2021 04:46 AM PDT Long story short, I'm 28 years old now, I live in NJ & I graduated recently in February with a degree in CIT (Computer Information Tech). I have 8 years of customer experience but no technical experience and after filling out a bunch of job applications I was recently offered to work at a Community College as a IT Help Desk Analyst. The thing is this job is part time with a max of 28 hours a week and with a pay of $20 per hour. My friends suggested I take the offer since it's not like I have any obligation or in contract to work a term so I can leave when a better opportunity comes my way. Since I have no technical experience this would help build my resume in the mean time and help me learn. I don't know if I'm on the right track or just took a longer route to get on the right track for my career. Am I doing anything wrong? Should I have negotiated for a bit more maybe like $21-$23 per hour or waited for a full time opportunity to come my way? I welcome any advice rn. [link] [comments] |
Where to focus if I need a job that's part time or outside regular business hours? Posted: 20 Sep 2021 05:12 AM PDT I've been taking a sabbatical from IT (~3 years experience, last title was helpdesk engineer, long term interests in the Linux space) while I go back to college. I have a (non-tech) job right now, and I hate it so much I cannot see straight. Other than MSP's, there any companies/jobs I should be focusing on? [link] [comments] |
[Cleared Work]Cloud Engineer Billing Rate in DC Area Posted: 20 Sep 2021 10:18 AM PDT For all the cleared contractors out there, anyone familiar with current billing rates for cloud work around the DC area? Looking to go fully remote however odds are the company will be in the DC area technically. From what I've seen cloud engineers in general are $150/hr+, however with my security focus I'm thinking I can get $180. Those with 10+ YOE I've seen easily hit $250/hr. Just wondering what people out there in weeds have seen on contracts. [link] [comments] |
Having trouble finding a job in a very competitive area of the united states Posted: 20 Sep 2021 08:14 AM PDT I have tried for almost a year now to try to get jobs remote, and local for something entry level. I have an internship under my belt at the United States Naval Academy, my certificate from CompTIA (ITF+), (pursuing A+), and the Google IT Support certificate. Unfortunately, I also live outside DC. Am I just seriously under-qualified or should I continue to get my A+ before applying more? [link] [comments] |
Silly question about orientation at a recruiting agency tomorrow. Posted: 20 Sep 2021 07:45 AM PDT So I got a job at a NOC through a recruiting agency, and tomorrow I have orientation at the recruiting agency, I'm not exactly sure what the dress code is haha. All of my previous experience is in factories, where it was ok to just show up to orientation (and work) in juts jeans and a t shirt. Should I wear khakis and a polo, would jeans and a bon graphic t shirt be ok, slacks and a button up? Thanks in advance lol [link] [comments] |
Job search references when with current employer for 15+ years Posted: 20 Sep 2021 04:27 AM PDT I've been with my current employer (government) for 18ish years, but lately I've been feeling a pull to look for something new. My current job is good, I have a lot of diversity in my day-to-day and lots of responsibility, but I'd like to learn some new skills and use them. I'm looking to move from the equivalent of T3 on-prem sysadmin supporting everything at a 400 employee organization (very limited cloud use) to a sysadmin handling a more balanced mix of on-prem and cloud. I've had a couple of interviews recently, and last night I found myself wondering how I'd handle the question of references, if it comes up. The references I used to get my current job are all terribly obsolete. I've been internally promoted in my 18 years (ie. Sysadmin to Sr. Sysadmin), but continue to work for the same manager. My colleagues have all been in their roles for 12-20 years too - the only ex-peers I have are those we've brought in on 3-6 month contracts but didn't end up hiring. I certainly have a couple of colleagues that I could ask to be references (who would likely be very discreet about it), but I'm not sure this is the route to go. My manager isn't paranoid or insecure about staff leaving, but also he's not the sort of guy who champions his staff to outgrow their roles. He'd certainly provide a great reference, but I'd probably try to avoid using him as a reference until I have an offer in hand. Am I overthinking this? How do I play this if it comes up? Another beginner with no experience question about AWS Posted: 20 Sep 2021 07:20 AM PDT Hey all, I've read quite a few posts here that have helped give me an idea of what to go towards, but I'm just looking for clarification My end goal is cyber security, unsure of the specialty just yet. My first goal is trying to get out of my current job (aircraft maintenance, nothing to do with IT at all) and into the IT world, however I need to make a certain amount for bills and such, and have seen help desk starting salaries, and wouldn't be able to do that. However I seen a post about 2 years back. Person was much in my position, got a couple AWS certs and did some projects and was able to get jobs that way making a decent chunk. As this was 2 years ago, is this still relevant? Would it help at all for the whole "experience needed" thing? I do plan on going to college for CompSci, but haven't started yet (and have no other degree) Tldr; some dude posted that he got 3 aws certs and was making good money with no prior experience, but that was 2 years ago. Still relevant? Thanks for any info! [link] [comments] |
Job hunting before graduation-current senior, class of 2022 Posted: 20 Sep 2021 10:18 AM PDT I graduate spring 2022. When is it a good time to start hunting for jobs? [link] [comments] |
Am I wasting my time by applying to jobs online without certifications? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 05:43 PM PDT I'm quite depressed these days and believe a new job will help a lot. I'm going to start applying to jobs online, but was reminded by the number of rejections I got last time I applied to jobs online and am wondering what's the point anymore. I have no certs and no degree, just 8 years of IT experience as a systems administrator. Maybe my resume sucks, but I don't think anyone is even looking at my resume. It usually gets rejected the very next day. Am I wasting my time? I literally can't afford to sit for cert exams right now. [link] [comments] |
Obtained an Entry Level Cyber Security Analyst Role. NEED HELP! Posted: 20 Sep 2021 09:46 AM PDT Got a part-time CSA role for a company this past week. It's part-time, fully remote. We are learning things very slowly and have not dived into working with different systems; more or less getting shown a lot of different things. Definitely thankful as it is not overwhelming at all! What are some things I can do to further help me understand the basics of Cyber Security as a whole? Particularly in an Analyzing role? I am starting my A+ which will definitely help get a core understanding of computing in general but as time goes on, I want to find things that will help me in my role. I'm typing this post to ask you experts for your advice. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
There's no degree for IT in Canadian universities, only Computer Science degrees? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 11:42 PM PDT I tried looking at various universities and they don't have IT degrees, only Comp Sci ones with BSc. I wanna study IT over Comp Sci because it's less math-intensive, would the best option for me be getting a diploma from a Canadian community college equivalent or is there a university I didn't notice that has an undergraduate IT degree? How can i get help desk job without CS degree or any experience? Posted: 20 Sep 2021 05:32 AM PDT I am looking for help desk experience job i heard about CompTIA is this certificate necessary? Knowledge i there but finding job related to my knowledge in help desk is difficult where can i find entry level job . Guide me. [link] [comments] |
Would I have to start off from the very bottom again? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 08:49 PM PDT I've worked in customer service for about 10 years now and I'm sick and tired of working so much for such little pay. I've looked into IT a few times and I feel like it might be my ticket to escape this life. I'm worried that if I do go into IT, I will have to start off in help desk (customer service) to start off my IT career. Since I don't want to work in CS anymore, would I really have to start off in help desk since I don't have any exp in IT? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 20 Sep 2021 06:47 AM PDT Hello, I am currently about halfway through an associates degree in cybersecurity and information assurance at my local community college. I don't hate cybersecurity but it is definitely lack luster. I have been looking into computer/digital forensics as something that I may be able to pursue after I complete my associates. I have some questions. Would it be an easy transition from cybersecurity to digital forensics? Should I pursue a more specific bachelors or just go for the certifications and find some real life experience? What has your experience in the field been like/ what is your day to day like? Do you enjoy it? I know it is most definitely not like Hollywood portrays it but do you feel like you are helping people and making a difference? Would you do it all over again? And finally Any advice you can offer? Thank you in advance!! [link] [comments] |
Are remote jobs just impossible or is there just too much competition Posted: 19 Sep 2021 08:00 PM PDT I've been applying to remote jobs for close to two months now and I have maybe gotten one interview. I really don't think my resume is the issue, or atleast the main one. My only guess is that there's a lot of candidates for the role so my submission just gets lost in the shuffle. Any tips would be helpful as I'm really trying my best to leave my current job [link] [comments] |
Could anyone take a look at my CV? I'm looking to jump ship and want someone to take a look. Posted: 19 Sep 2021 07:53 PM PDT I took out all of my personal info and am hoping I could get some opinions on my CV. I just spent a couple of hours redoing it and hoping I come off as experienced. I'm currently a systems admin, who is looking to find a better paying systems job to keep my sanity. Here is a link: [link] [comments] |
What are jobs that you can get with no experience for "experience" in the field Posted: 20 Sep 2021 01:38 AM PDT I'm in school right now trying to get my Network Admin Tech certificate. I've been looking through some jobs in IT, but most say that you would need "2 years exp," or just experience of the field in general. Having the certificate let's me actually have some qualifications, but I haven't worked in the field yet myself. Any ideas on how to get started? I was going to look into best buy, but I would like to know some other great jobs that I can get my foot in the door with, thanks. [link] [comments] |
is BSIT Degree Heavily dependent on math? (I'm really bad at calculus) Posted: 20 Sep 2021 12:49 AM PDT I'm planning on taking a BSIT degree but my math isn't so good, and I'm wondering if the course requires heavily on math (I hate calculus) [link] [comments] |
What's the best bang for your buck certification or skill to learn right now with a 3 month period? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 06:06 PM PDT Apologies ahead of time for the longish post. My experience/background:
I'm currently learning Linux casually and have been using it as my main computer for over a year now. With my that being said, I have a lot of time in my hands right now and could use a cert or new skill. I was learning and training the whole time but the opportunity to move up within just didn't materialize. It was frustrating to put the time and effort to learn something but in the end not be able to apply it. If I had played my cards right and jumped employers more often, I'd probably in a better spot. I got suckered in the comfort of familiarity and stability. I've spoken to management about my frustrations but the job openings weren't there. The problem with training and certifying is that employers often times ask for X years of experience to get you considered. What certifications or skills can I take to get me off the entry level limbo? Which skills and certs can get you hired ASAP? What are the most valuable in terms potential salaries? I need something new to focus on. I'm even open to leaving the IT field completely if there is a new field I can train in without going to school for it (sales, marketing, supply chain. etc.).
