    Not THAT kind of gaming.

    Not THAT kind of gaming.

    Not THAT kind of gaming.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 11:37 PM PDT

I have a lot of steam games. I have a high-end (2019) desktop with multiple monitors. But I work quite a few miles away from home, stay in hotels often, and have a lot of "free time" at work, as my job is largely passive. I don't want to break the bank here, and I really hate how "gaming pc" means "must run doom, cyberpunk, and halo reach" when all I'm looking for are the lighter fare.

I can play the nice looking GPU melters and multi-player AAA titles at home. I just want to play less intensive time-killers that still require decent hardware, and some require windows.

Some examples of stuff I'd like to use it for: Factorio, Rimworld, Terraria, Minecraft, Maybe even Cities Skylines, Fantasy Grounds, GIMP (occasional image editing), Youtube, Older games from mid 2000s.

So I don't need a $1200-3000 mega rig with industrial blowers and full rtx rendering level stuff. But I can't use something like a chromebook either, as they can't run those programs. Just a laptop that can handle a few games, and not cost a ton. I'd love to find something in the$300-600 range that still has some decent storage. How possible is this quest?

    Amazon Renewed

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 06:39 PM PDT

I'm in need of a good laptop that can play games and I was thinking of geting a used one off of Amazon because I'm on the tight budget of around 300 dollars is there any that y'all could recommend for me?

    (Links would be helpful)

Also is geting a laptop from Amazon Renewed trustworthy enough to be in good condition if not I'll probably just settle for a new laptop with only a celeron chip :/ even though I know it can't run many games if any at all.

Or should I just wait for a sale?

Need very powerful laptop, 15 or 17", Germany or Canada, under €4000 (lower ideal of course)

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 01:20 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase:

Up to 4000, but of course lower would be best, like around 3000-3500. Ideally I'd buy in Germany, but if I can get a better deal in Canada (where my family is), then I'd go with that.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Not really possible since I would like an 11th Gen Intel.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance first, then anything else really. I don't care/use the battery that much.

How important is weight and thinness to you?
    Not at all.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    15 or 17"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Video editing, motion and games. Adobe (PS, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere, etc), the occasional C4D, and games like Destiny 2, CP2077, etc.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The latest games. I play a lot of Destiny 2 and CP2077. I'd like at least 60 FPS in most games, no need for more.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

The most important things I need are: 4K display, 32gb RAM, RTX 3060-3070-3080, 1tb SSD, 11th Gen Intel CPU.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm a designer and I need a top of the line laptop. I currently have an XPS 9560, and while it's been pretty decent overall, the thermals and throttling have been pure garbage. I'd like to splurge a little and get something that will handle video editing, motion, games, etc without necessarily melting from the heat or throttle aggressively. I'd like to buy something in the next few months.

I've been considering the Razer Blade Pro 15, the Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 4, and the (sigh) XPS 9710. I hear lots of bad things about Razer, the Thinkpad isn't out yet but looks like it will be higher than my budget, and the XPS is an XPS. Gigabyte Aero 15 are interesting too, but they look ugly as sin and don't seem particularly good.

Let me know your thoughts on those models or if there's anything else I forgot! Thanks.

Dell G5 SE vs Hp Omen 15

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 03:53 AM PDT

    I live in India and my budget is Rs.100000 (USD 1350) I've been searching laptops with 11th gen intel i5 i7 or i9 or amd ryzen 5,7 or 9 4000 or 5000 with a dedicated gpu (Specifically gtx 1070 1080 1660 2060 2070 2080 3050 3060 3070 3080 and radeon rx 5600m).

Please give your opinion on the better choice. Dell G5 15 SE 5505 Gaming Laptop and Omen Laptop 15-en0002AX. Or any other with enough specs to compensate for value for money.

For more info: I used noteb.com (probably the best laptop finder with good database) to filter laptops but there were many results albeit in my price but the variants differed in India both in specs and pricing. Then I specifically went in on each company's website of indian domain to get actual prices and specs. At last the laptops that remained were asus strix g15 asus tuf dash f15 asus tuf dash f17 hp omen 15 and dell g5 se. All of the asus s models are above 85 and due to value for money g5 se comes at the top just beating omen 15 @75000. But the problem is i have heard about heating issues on dell which hinder the performance but still it has a better gpu than omen and saves some money.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Permormance>Build Quality>Form Factor>Battery Life

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not too heavy as I will be commuting with it. Idm thickness as long as it has a decent port selection.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Around 13" - 15"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Physics/Maths computational Software eg. Matlab, Python, R and Mathematica. Also, may be used for some video editing on roughly 1080p footage for 20 min long videos.

Roblox at 60fps (although that isn't much of a challenge lol)

Windows Hello, Backlight keyboard, 1 USB C and 1 USB A minimum ports.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I need this laptop to comfortably last 3/4 years and I'd like a high end processor (preferably Ryzen 7 5000 series). I reckon 8-16GB Ram and 256/512GB SSD storage will be fine. I will be taking this device to uni so good battery life and not too heavy/noisy. (Repost just to get some backup options incase my first choice doesn't work out)

    Thanks!

    HP Pavilion

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 03:46 AM PDT

I recently bought the HP Pavilion 15" eh00019na

    https://www.hp.com/gb-en/shop/Product.aspx?id=2U7L4EA&opt=ABU&sel=NTB

My main concerns are build quality and hardware - not bothered about battery or weight etc.

I'm sending this back though as the space bar doesn't work and the touch screen feels a bit tacky/sticky.

Just wondering if people have any suggestions of a better laptop for a similar price or cheaper - I'm happy with 16gb of RAM, I don't know enough about processors but I think an octacore Ryzen 7 4700u is decent and looks as though it outperforms the intel i7 1165G7 quad core, no idea about the graphics card but it's not dedicated but integrated.

Also wanted to ask if anyone else has this and also has a "sticky" touchscreen ?

My old laptop is very very old and I want to get back into computer stuff - coding / cyber security etc and also want to start making some videos

I need a subtle (doesn't look like a gaming laptop) gaming laptop for school that is under $1000. I'm in the United States.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 05:44 PM PDT

    The Form

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:Less than $1000.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?I don't like 2-in-1s. I need at least 9 hours of battery life. I will be using it mainly for school work and web browsing, but I want to be able to play games on it as well. It should be sturdy, as I will be carrying it across a campus.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?As long as I can comfortably carry it in a case across a campus, it's fine.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.I would like at least 13 inches. Nothing too small.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.Just gaming, really. The most demanding thing I play is Battlefield 1.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? The most demanding thing I play is Battlefield 1. I would like to hit 60 FPS at medium.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?I just need the keyboard to be quite, as I will be using it in class. I need a headphone jack, and at least one USB Type A port. An SD card port (normal or micro) would be nice, but isn't essential. I would like a shutter for the webcam, but it's not that important.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The MOST IMPORTANT THING is that I DO NOT want this device to scream "Look at me! I'm a gamer!" I don't want any external RGB. If there is an RGB keyboard, I need to be able to set it to stay white. Obnoxious branding is also undesirable, but not a deal breaker. I want this to look like an ordinary laptop, but just with a dedicated GPU. I do not want to use a hard disk. I would prefer 500 GBs for an SSD. If it is easily accessible (for example, I don't want to have to take the keyboard off) I can replace the RAM, so I don't mind skimping on that at first.

Suggestions for a laptop for my programming classes

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 10:50 AM PDT

    The Form

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$400 USD or monthly payments of $50-80 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      only from reputable sellers
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I need something that will be sturdy. I don't want the plastic edges around the screen to crack/break. Battery life of at least 9 hours, CPU with 3.0 GHz, 12-16 GB of DDR4 RAM, dedicated GPU with 256 GB of dedicated graphics RAM, hard drive with 256GB SSD
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
As long as it will fit in a standard laptop case or backpack, it's ok
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14in/35.5cm
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Possibly, but not until 2023
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'd like to play games similar to Skyrim, but not as big
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I need at least a USB port for flash drives, headphone jack, microphone jack and ethernet port. My previous laptop had trouble connecting to our wifi and would often only be reliable if connected directly to the router. We're supposed to be getting wifi speeds of around 80 megabyte upload/download speeds, but that can only be attainable if we connect our devices directly to the router. We live in an apartment complex with 6 other apartments totaling at least 5,000 square feet. No apple devices. I don't like HP as a brand, but if it will perform well for at least 2 years and I'd be able to resell it, I'd be ok with HP.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'll be getting about $500 USD in November that I could use to pay off the laptop. My college put these as requirements for the best experience:

Tech Ed courses such as GDT, DDT, EMP, MTT require intensive software such as Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, etc. More capable hardware is recommended. These are not bare minimum requirements but minimum recommendations for a good student experience.

    OS: Windows 10

    CPU: 3.0 GHz

RAM: 12-16 GB of DDR4 RAM

Graphics: dedicated GPU with 256 GB of dedicated graphics RAM

    Hard drive: 256GB SSD

    Peripherals recommended:

    Speakers and/or headphone/audio jack

    Webcam (integrated or USB plug-and-play).

Browser: Chrome or Firefox (latest version)

If I can trade it in for a better laptop later on, that would be an excellent feature as I will eventually be taking courses for WebDev, C#, C++, JAVA, Database and query(Course overview states "This course provides database theory with an emphasis on relational database management. Hands-on SQL database programming is included. The course also covers design, normalization, implementation and query of a relational database.")

    I will be taking

Data structures (Course overview states "This course will instruct students in the design and use of common data structures, lists, stacks, queues, trees, tables, hash tables, and graphs. Common data structure algorithms will be explored, including sorting, searching, and reorganizing data, with attention paid toward trade-offs between space and efficiency. Students will implement many of these data structures in an object oriented programming language and complete programming projects utilizing them.")

A software Engineering project in spring/fall of 2023. (Course overview states "This course is intended to develop the student's programming knowledge and skills in an applied environment. Students will work as individuals and in teams to implement a real-world equivalent system, perhaps converting legacy code to current technology standards or designing a new product from scratch. Students will develop designs, generate test procedures, and build a multi-tiered, client-server application capable of being utilized from a variety of platforms. Students will also learn project management and scheduling skills and that will be used to manage project phases and keep teams on task. Students must earn a grade of C or better in this course to meet graduation requirements.")

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

********NOTE: I have a fully loaded Alienware M17 R3 4K 500 nit 60hz 25ms with RTX 2080 super 130w TDP overclockable i9-10980hk 32GB ram 1TB raid 0 + 512gb storage m.2 I LOVE this laptop but the 4K display (which is amazing) is only 60hz with high 25ms response rate and I wish it were faster. When I play World of Warcraft I wish I could play in higher FPS than 60fps or whatever game. The newer Alienware laptops have higher refresh rates with their high res displays it's not fair.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $2600.00 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      only from reputable sellers

Yes, prefer refurbished with warranty if possible but new is fine. Prefer open box deals from Best Buy. No used laptops from private sellers or eBay. Need factory warranty.

    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery

Battery life isn't important that much I keep it plugged in. Nothing touch, no 2 in 1. Build quality is important but doesn't have to be ultrabook thin. Performance is important. Need this to be a desktop replacement. I need to be able to undervolt the cpu because laptop cooling always sucks and I can't have it thermal throttle.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Nothing too too heavy like Alienware area 51m I do like to bring it to work sometimes but it mostly stays on the desk. I loved the 2020 razer 17 with RTX 2080 max q but I couldn't undervolt it they blocked it in bios and it didn't have a number pad. It reached temps of 90c and above and the cpu throttled. I can't have it throttle.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

16"+. Prefer 17". No 15". I don't use an external display so the screen must be big.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I game but no AAA titles. I play world of Warcraft, league of legends, elder scrolls online, Minecraft often and need to do highest settings at highest resolution. I use photoshop, indesign and illustrator very often. I also video edit with Adobe premier pro sometimes. My fiancé will use AutoCAD on it as well for work.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Id like to run World of Warcraft at around 120 FPS in 1440p or 85fps+ in 4K. I don't play AAA games but like the option to crank up shaders in Minecraft or download a powerful emulator and crank up the settings for fun without it stuttering.

    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard, touchpad)

I use this laptop for mostly photo editing, illustrator, editing movies, AutoCAD sometimes and watching movies and TV. The display is extremely important and must be bright and color accurate. I prefer 1440p QHD displays 120hz refresh rate and above with minimum 450 nit brightness but 500 nit is better. I also like 4K 120hz 450 nit and above with HDR. Must be color accurate. Must have a good sized glass Microsoft precision touchpad and quality keyboard. The touchpad on the Alienware m15 r3 for example is glass Microsoft precision but it's tiny. I use the touchpad a lot. As close to a Mac touchpad as possible. I love MacBook pros for their design and quality but I like windows and need more powerful hardware. Must have a gpu MUX switch and backlit keyboard. I like rgb keyboards, not needed though. I'd like a card reader but I have a usb c adapter. I'd like it to have good speakers I watch a lot of movies and tv on it. I hate shit speakers.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I need regular usb 3.1 ports and wifi 6 and would like to have a display port. I'm a bit of an enthusiast and like to have faster hardware than I really need so I can tinker with it. I like the Dell XPS 17 but it's underpowered with its GPU and the cooling isn't great and has terrible port selection. I love the 17" razer laptops I had a 2020 17" 2080 max q with 4K display 120hz but I couldn't undervolt it to prevent it from thermal throttling. I like companies like Eluktronics but their QHD 17" laptops are 300 nit brightness only and I use it in bright places. I need a bright display. I prefer glossy displays but those are a dying breed.

    OS: Windows 10

CPU: prefer AMD Ryzen 5000 series but will take a powerful i7/i9hk series

RAM: I want 32gb ram but will take minimum 16 GB of DDR4 RAM but must be upgradable to 32gb

Graphics: dedicated GPU with 8gb vram. Nothing lower than a 2070 super max p high TDP w/ ability to overclock. Prefer a RTX 2080 and above. I don't need an RTX 3080 12GB but it would be great, just out of my price range.

Hard drive: 512gb minimum with an extra m.2 slot so I can add another drive.

    Peripherals recommended:

    Speakers and/or headphone/audio jack

    Webcam (integrated or USB plug-and-play).

    Laptop for audio editing

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 06:52 PM PDT

I'm planning on starting to do some audio editing with my voice as well as some instrumental stuff. I've already got a PC, so I'd like to get a laptop that I could edit on and maybe record on for larger projects, while I'm not at home. Any suggestions?

    • Total budget (USD):
      $1000 at most
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Not opposed, as long as it's in working order with no problems
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
As long as it's strong enough to run recording/editing software and has a good battery, I'm fine. Tablet/laptop is preferable, but not a dealbreaker
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Preferably a thinner one, so it doesn't require a large space in my bag/ I don't need a separate bag for it
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Audio editing is my main focus with this, so anything that can run that is fine
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
USB 3.0, touch screen preferable, would like lots of storage or the ability to add external storage down the line
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Nothing really to add from here. I just want to be able to work on my projects when I've got free time and do more stuff on location with something other than my phone.

Looking for a laptop for school and light gaming.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 02:06 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.

Lithuania, Europe. Budget is 600 €

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Refurbed - maybe, used - no.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Performance.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

It is somewhat important, I'm thinking something a little on the thinner and lighter side.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light, short video editing, simple games like League of Legends or older games like Far Cry 3 or Minecraft.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The games I listed above should run 100+ FPS for sure. Also some newer games like Witcher 3 on 60FPS with some tweaking probably would run in that price range.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    N/A.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

A lot of people are recommending Dell Inspiron in this sub, but my country is all sold out and it's a little too expensive (800 € ) so I'm looking for any other alternatives.

Laptop or 2-in-1 for a grad CS student?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 01:41 AM PDT

    Hello

I'm about to enter grad school (CS) and I'm looking for suggestions and ideas about a new laptop.

I'm hesitating between a 2-in-1 laptop which is ultra-portable and a laptop that is more powerful and faster.

My budget is around 600-700$ for a 2-in-1 and 900-1000$ for a laptop. I would like to know what option is the best for my needs given that I want something very portable (carrying it around with me all the time) and powerful enough to code on it. Gaming is not a priority for me right now.

    Thank you.

    Questionnaire:

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      500-600$ for 2-in-1, 900-1000$ for laptop
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Form factor, performance, battery life, build quality
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Very important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Programming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      SSD is a must
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Looking for the best option given my budget, portability needs and performance.

    $1200 - 2 in 1 15" USA Laptop for university student

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:10 AM PDT

    APTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: -1,200 Are you open to refurbs/used? -Yes How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? -I would prefer a 2 in 1, with good battery life and built to last. Performance isn't majorly important, though I will be multi-tasking and possibly running a few computationally intense programs. How important is weight and thinness to you? -It's not that important though I would light a light and thin laptop. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -I prefer 15 inch laptops though 13 and 17 inches would be fine. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -I have a desktop PC i will be doing most video editing/gaming. I will mostly be using the laptop for productivity and a few light programs such as Stata and Rstudio. I will be doing a lot of multitasking though so it does need to be capable of that. I may do some light gaming, mostly paradox games. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -Victoria 2, HOI4, CK3 at high settings with 60fps. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - I haven't really found thin keyboards to be annoying honestly. I do, however, wear my devices down. It will be going in and out of my backpack and be exposed to motorcycle vibrations so a repairable/hardy laptop is preferred. I would like a finger-print reader or windows hello. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -The reason I want a 2 in 1 is because I want to start taking digital handwritten notes so a laptop that works for that would be nice. I've been looking at the Samsung Galaxybook Pro 360 or the Galaxy Book Flex2 Alpha.
