    Acer swift 3

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 09:50 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am thinking of buying the Acer swift 3 (SF314-59-57AZ). It has an intel i5 processor (11th generation), 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD.

I want to buy this laptop for uni (word, excel, JASP, SPSS, PowerPoint) and some Netflix and social media.

I hope to get a laptop which lasts at least the next 4-5 years. Good portability is important for me since I will take it with me to the library every day. Do ya'll think this is a good choice? It's 730€.

If you do not recommend this laptop for my needs, what else do you recommand. I live in Europe.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 02:38 PM PDT

Should i use the laptop while it is plugged in power at all time or is it better not to?

Should i shut down or just sleep? As i close the laptop and it automatically put into sleep.

What are the common mistakes that people do that you should avoid?

Laptop Crashes Every Now and Then

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 02:07 PM PDT

I have a Lenovo Ideapad S340. When i first started up my laptop yesterday, it was fine and I was able to log in to a game (Genshin Impact) just fine. However, a few minutes into the game, it crashed and my laptop just displayed a blue screen that said "Your device ran into a problem and need to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you." The stop code is Critical Process Died. This whole scenario happened again when i restarted the laptop. After this, I was also getting the error "Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed" after the blue screen. This already happened to me once back then and I solved it through a video from Youtube so I turned off my laptop, turned it on using the Nuvo button on the side and went to the BIOS Setup. However, when I went to Boot, the first option was grayed out and I cannot change it (It is in UEFI) and there were only three options after it. My Security Boot was already enabled so I tried disabling it and saving and exiting to see if the grayed option would change the next time. However, after restarting and then encountering the same blue screen error, the grayed out option remained and the Secure Boot was already disabled. I was able to use my laptop for a while after those but it ALWAYS crashed when I tried to launch Genshin Impact. This occured a few more times and when I tried to troubleshoot, I discovered I cannot open Settings because it just flashes then closes immediately. Now, my laptop just crashes randomly and I just let it restart whenever. I have no idea what's happening and I really need a fully functioning laptop because classes are about to start. Thank you in advance, everyone!

    Any advice?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 01:41 PM PDT

Hello how are you? I am looking to buy a used laptop (or new depending on the price difference) in 3 or 4 months, I am thinking of a macbook with the m1 chip.

I use my computer to watch movies, YouTube, write words and edit some images, videos and pdf. I also play some games with an Android emulator. But I prefer to play on my phone.

It seems to me that the main thing is the battery, screen, speakers and performance so that it waits for updates and time.

I am looking for something that will last 8/9 years or more if possible without problems.

Is it a good idea or do you recommend another? If a macbook is a good idea, air or pro? Which one is better for my idea?

Because of its change in something I am living in Ireland.

    Thank you for reading!

If I leave my laptop plugged in all the time, but set the charge limit to 80% will that decrease the battery life?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 01:18 PM PDT

I'm getting my new laptop tomorrow, I already know that leaving a laptop at 100% is really bad for the battery, but is leaving it at 80% just as bad? I don't want to decrease the battery life right away lmao

    Samsung Galaxy Book i5 15"

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 01:13 PM PDT

    Good evening!

I'm currently looking for a new laptop for basic university stuff like Office and maybe some Netflix. Samsung has the Samsung Galaxy Book on sale for 250€ less than usual. It seems like a good deal but I'm a little suspicious. I'm unsure about the keyboard and trackpad, I heard some negative reviews about it being low quality and not suitable for long writing sessions. The components seem decent but the sudden price drop is a little weird.

Can someone confirm this or give me an insight on their personal experience?

Soldered memory: can I swallow it?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 03:57 AM PDT

I believe right-to-repair (and to upgrade) is a very important point when it comes to electronics. As such, being in search of a new laptop, I've become obsessed with SODIMM slots as a necessity, as opposed to soldered memory. Now, the benefits of upgrading are obvious, and this is necessary when buying a PC with 8GB RAM nowadays. But let's say that I can buy a laptop with a future-proof amount of memory: do I actually have to worry about RAM failures? I know they do happen, but are they common enough to be a game-changer? I'm asking because I feel like my restrictive criteria are unnecessarily preventing me from considering perfectly good (lightweight, thin...) devices as options, just because of soldered RAM. Please change my mind. Or don't, I'm just looking for objective remarks. Thank you to everyone who is going to answer my question.

Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Ryzen 7 8GB RAM Open Box for $620?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 12:38 PM PDT

Hi I found this laptop at a best buy near me.

Seems like a great deal. It has some cosmetic damage, but I don't care about that. I'm going to get the Geek Squad Protection plan too.

I am going to be traveling quite a bit this year so I want something reliable.

I also like to game sometimes so I need something with good specs.

This rig has more than enough for me, and I can upgrade the RAM if needed.

My main concern is the reliability while traveling. Any thoughts?
