    Help with ethernet wall jack

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 01:51 PM PDT

For some background, my PC is in my room, but my router is in my brother's room down the hall. My pc does not have wifi built in, so what I have been doing was connecting my pc via ethernet to a wifi extender in my room. Recently, my internet has been cutting out a lot and affecting gaming and other things. I thought that the best way to fix this would be connecting directly to my router through ethernet, instead of having the wifi in between. In my room, I actually have an ethernet wall port that looks like this: https://ibb.co/zF5tgF0. When I tried plugging my ethernet cable from that port into my PC, nothing happened and it did not connect to the internet. Theres no way I can run a cable through my halls to my PC, so not sure what I should do. I also really don't want to hire an electrician or anything like that cuz I'm 15 and there's no way my parents would pay for that. Any help is appreciated!

Do Coax cables have "generations" like Ethernet has Cat 5,5e,6 etc?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 03:32 AM PDT

Because I'm going to switch to Cable internet instead of VDSL, and the cables in my house are old.

Not sure if I should replace them all or they can still do the job (They will be used for both internet and TV on the same cable)

Frontier Fiber -- Want to add a Moca adapter

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 05:13 PM PDT

I having the same problem as the person here:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/oytxhq/frontier_fiber_want_to_add_a_moca_adapter/

Just moved and we installed Frontier fiber to our house, but I can't run ethernet from the router in the middle of the house to my room on the other end. I've tried running powerline ethernet adapters which I found do worse than just using my wifi adapter. I have found that MoCA seems to be the optimal solution for my current situation. I thought it would be as simple as buying another Frontier FCA251 MoCA adapter to add to the network, but I realized that the pair the technician installed were using WAN and connecting the ONT to the eero mesh system that I have through the coaxial cables in the house. Is there any way to connect another Frontier FCA251 MoCA adapter that is running LAN to the pair running right now? I want to connect it to my desktop to get the max amount of speeds that my internet allows for.

    Good router for 1-bedroom Apartment?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 02:54 PM PDT

I am currently using a Motorola MB8600 modem and a TP-Link AC1750 Archer A7 router. I also have Comcast Xfinity 200mb for my internet.

I have had almost nothing but problems with the Archer A7, it worked fine for about a week, but now it disconnects 3-5 times a day; and I am pretty sick of not having stable internet. For the record, I am 95% certain it s the router to blame, as when I plug my PC into the modem, I have internet, but when I plug it into the router again, I lose that internet.

I want to try to stay below $150-200 budget-wise. Any help is appreciated.

D-Link COVR-X1870 Ethernet Backhaul not working

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 07:26 PM PDT

Hi, I recently purchased the D-Link COVR-X1870 2-pack WiFi mesh system. Ethernet backhaul is one of the advertised features.

    My FTTP setup is:

NBN Box to Mesh #1 - Ethernet to WAN
Mesh #1 to Mesh #2 - Ethernet via in-house cabling

I've tried connecting the ethernet cable to either the WAN or one of the 4 LAN ports on Mesh #2, but it doesn't seem to recognise it as ethernet backhaul. It still seems to be using 5Ghz as the WiFi backhaul and the connection quality ranges from poor to good.

Does anyone know how to make it work?

Asus RT-AC88U and RP-AX56 AiMesh Network - No Epic or Battle.net downloads

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 07:50 PM PDT

I have Asus RT-AC88U and RP-AX56 setup in an AiMesh Network at my home with Comcast Xfinity cable and no data cap.

I can't download games properly from Epic or Battle.net , they always stall (in the same place) and then error out. Steam and origin seem fine. I have tried this on two separate computers with the same exact behavior which leads me to believe it's a network or ISP issue.

Honestly not even sure where to begin. I tried port forwarding on my desktop using ports that Epic and Battle.net suggest, didn't change a thing.

    I appreciate any help/suggestions.

I get around 15-25mbits downloading from Steam, MEGA, YouTube. All the big names

But i get 20kbytes downloading from almost every other site. Like Mediafire, Sourceforge, Linux repositories, etc.

What's happening here? I have tried everything, and all my friends with the same ISP experience the same problem. 20kbytes is unnaceptable on all means

Finding the end point of a smurf tube conduit?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 07:06 PM PDT

I'm trying to run some new ethernet cables through my walls for use with PoE surveillance cameras. The house is pre-wired with cat5e, which I've already put to use for networking purposes, so I need to run some additional cables. In the network closet, there's a smurf tube conduit with a pull cable in it that appears to go upward toward the second floor and potentially attic (though I can't say for sure), which is exactly where I would like to run the cables. I've gone up to the attic where I would expect the smurf tube to come out, but I can't find the other end anywhere. The attic is covered with blown in insulation, so it's possible it's buried somewhere but I can't find it when I move around the insulation where I would expect it to be. There's another smurf tube that runs from the attic to the crawl space below that house, which the builders left sticking out several feet to make it obvious, so I would expect they would do the same with this one. I've also gone down into the crawl space below and don't see it coming out there either. I'm trying to figure out a method to determine where the smurf tube travels through the walls. Anyone know any techniques to do this? I've read that you can sometimes use a fish tape with a toner, but I couldn't really find any guidance on how to make this work.

    One-side video calling issue

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 07:04 PM PDT

Long story short, I have constantly the fastest connection, 40/20 or better vs 17/0.7, but the receiving party doesn't see me on FaceTime after few seconds. If I call on WiFi. If I call on 4G with FaceTime or on either WiFi or 4G with Whatsapp we experience no issues. Our local latency is sub-20 ms on both ends and distance doesn't affect the outcome: two continents or two hundreds of kilometers away, and with the same ISP on the latter, have the same.

I noticed FaceTime on WiFi exchanges at least twice as many data as the other options I mentioned. How this may generate the one-side "poor connection" issue?

    Renting place downgraded internet

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 06:54 PM PDT

I have been renting from this place for the last year. Internet is included in my rent. Over the summer they switched internet providers. Internet went from 13 ping and 30 download to 100 ping and 2 download. My rent stayed the same except 20$ off a month that i got for extending my lease early like a couple months ago.
I have tried contacting the company for a week as with my 3 other roommates and they won't respond or call back. We've also asked around and the whole complex is having the same problem. What can i do about this?

    Moca Issues

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 06:50 PM PDT

I just moved into an older house, and unfortunately PoE doesn't really work too well.

My router is the Cox Panoramic, so its a modem / router, and only has a coax input for ethernet. It comes with MOCA options built in. I test all coax cables in the house with the router, and get signal from all of them with the panoramic, so I think, all good from here.

So I go out and buy the Actiontec ECB6250, and set it up in my office, after enabling moca in settings on the panoramic; No coax signal.

So, I call both actiontec and cox tech support, both confirm that the moca in the panoramic should work, but to set up another actiontec adapter on the same output splitter as the panoramic.

That one then gets a coax signal, but nothing from the one in my office; Or any other coax cable in the house. I tried switching the Actiontec adapters, and got nothing. I feel like I'm going insane.

Here is a link to my, horrible, diagram. I should also say, the office coax could also say "Any other coax"

Need help on current Home System

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 02:22 PM PDT

Try this again to see if I can pinpoint what's needed -

    Current System:

    • Google Wifi GEN1 3 beacons
    • TredNET Unmanagement Switch for wired devices
    • ARRIS SURFboard SB6190 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem
    • Internet 500mbps

    Devices: 23 Wifi / 2 Wired

    • Google Phone
    • iPhone x4
    • Chromebook x2
    • Window Laptop x3
    • Window Desktop x2
    • Smart TV
    • Alexa Cube
    • Chromecast x3
    • Wyze Cams x5
    • Amazon echo Dots x3

    Issues:

    • Sometimes issues are with my Google phone, not iPhones
    • Sometimes disconnects on Wifi devices, mixed phones and laptops
    • A few times issues with Desktops wired and not with Wifi devices
    • A few times issues with Desktops and a few Wifi devices my my wifes laptop was still connected
    • Another issue is my Smart TV has been buffering a lot at different times of the day/evening. I try to prioritize the device in google home app but it doesn't always work. Mostly I have to power cycle the tv but doesn't always fix the issue

*Sometimes issue resolves itself but mostly I have to power cycle my modem. Issue with that is the time it takes to boot back up until internet initializes again

**I also heard that devices like my modem and/or switch can over heat and cause latency/crashes but not sure if that is happening

***Issues occur at different times and not specific to week day or weekends.

Upgrades to my network that I was thinking about getting but didn't know if they would help:

    • Eero Pro 6 - Support of high number of devices, speed and stability
    • --OR-- Nest Wifi - Increase in speed and stability to devices
    • TP-Link Omada Hardware Controller | SDN Integrated - Looking for a device to help track endpoints visually on my network, whether they are WIRED or Wifi
    • ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit Cable Modem
    • TP-Link AV1000 Powerline Starter Kit for upstairs bedroom to be wired

    Purpose of Use:

I working M-F along with my wife at home. We both have Win Laptop running Webex meetings VPN into our work. I also have my desktop going with websites and some streaming throughout the day. My son is on his desktop gaming and streaming, plus streaming on his phone. Ny daughter is streaming on Smart TV and on her phone for most of the day. The evenings and weekends, son and daughter steps don't change but my wife and I are not on our computers but are steaming on the Smart tv.

    PS5 and Moca

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 06:02 PM PDT

Hey all, looking for some advice. So I've just changed residence and am looking for some options. I have a ps5 and ran a standard Ethernet connection at my old residence as the router and console were in the same room. In my new residence I may not have that luxury and have spent a while looking for options. So on my journey to have the best possible connection, I was originally going to go with power line adapters until I came across Moca. While I'm not entirely sure how it works, I do understand they work with coax cables( which I do have here) and are far more efficient than power line adapters. So I'm here looking for the best options. I'm getting Verizon WiFi if that helps. I would like to keep it below $150 but will go a little higher if necessary. A little clarification on how it works would be a big help. Thanks to any and all replies.

    Trying to upgrade speed

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 02:09 PM PDT

Speed help needed. I decided to totally overhaul my home network and bought a Motorola MB8611 modem and a Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine router. I went top of the line and installed both easily. My Xfinity tier was 100/5 and I decided to upgrade to a 400/10 tier. After a week, the changes still hadn't taken effect. I restarted everything. No increase in speed. Xfinity sent a tech. He ran the meter, and I have 1Gb right up to the end of the coax, but no increase in speed. When I hook the modem up directly to the laptop without the router, I get no increase in speed. Is this a bad modem? Anything to try that we haven't?

    Troubleshooting port at 100MBps

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 02:04 PM PDT

TL;DR: is there anything other than a new cable that might help me?

I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what I need to try next.

Original setup: Cable modem > Ubiquiti USG > US-24-250W > 75m direct bury Cat6 > US-8-150W. On the main switch end, the cable is punched down in a patch panel and connected via a short (6") patch cable. On the other end, I used a keystone jack with a short patch cable. This setup worked fine for about 2 years with a good 1GB connection.

After a nearby lightning strike, I have been slowly replacing/rerouting things to get the entire network back in business. The US-8-150W was reporting a 10MbE connection no matter which ports I used on the 24- or 8-port switches. I replaced the 8-port with a Ubiquiti USW-Flex (not mini). I connected it to a port of the 24-port switch with a short patch cable and adopted it at 1GbE.

I then moved the Flex to the 8 port's location, connected the 75m cable/keystone jack/patch cable to the Flex, and waited for it to turn blue. Then I connected the remaining cable from the original 8-port switch to the Flex. The Flex now shows up in the controller as 100MbE when connected to the same port where it previously showed 1GbE on the short patch cable.

Since it was 1GbE before, I think that means I need to re-check the connections at the patch panel and keystone jack ends. I'm thinking the strike might have permanently damaged enough wires in the direct bury Cat 6 to allow a 100 MbE but not 1 GbE connection.

So after all that, is it worth reconnecting the keystone jack and/or patch panel to ensure nothing happened to those wires, or is it likely the lightning took out the entire cable? Is there anything else I can try other than rewiring and/or replacing the Cat 6 cable?

FWIW, I originally tried this with a Ubiquiti direct bury fiber cable in 2019. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to connect the two switches, Ubiquiti agreed the fiber cable was bad and gave me a new one as a replacement after some months of waiting. Since the Cat 6 was working, we didn't want to go through the hassle of digging the ditch again to pass the new fiber cable along. If I have to pass a new cable between the buildings, I will probably give fiber a shot with the original US-8-150W switch or a media converter to the Flex.

    Routing question

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 09:59 AM PDT

     Internet | +---------|------------------------------------------------------+ | | Home LAN 10.0.0.0/20 | | v +-------------------------+ | | +--------------+ | +--------------------+ | | | | Home Router | Port Forward | | Raspberry Pi | | | | | 10.0.0.1/20 | --------------|->| 10.0.0.101/20 | | | | | | | | 10.1.0.101/24 | | | | +--------------+ | +--------------------+ | | | | | 0.0.0.0/0 via wg0 | | | | | | | +---------------------------------|-----|-------------------|----+ | v | | +--------------------+ | | | Cloud instance | | | +--------------------+ | | | | VPN 10.1.0.0/24 | | | +-------------------------+

I have a raspberry Pi that is wireguard VPNd to a cloud instance and routes all internet traffic via the VPN. I also have some services running on the pi that I have enabled port forwarding for from my router. The problem is that I am not able to access these services over the internet from the router. I think it's because the return packets get routed to the cloud instance instead of the router.

Here is the wireguard config on the rpi1

    [Interface] Address = 10.1.0.101/32 ListenPort = 51821 PrivateKey = <PRIVATEKEY> [Peer] PublicKey = <PUBLICKEY> Endpoint = <cloud-instance-address>:51820 AllowedIPs = 0.0.0.0/0 # Route ALL traffic through vpn PersistentKeepalive = 25

On the cloud instanceI have iptables set up to handle the SNATing. When I do a `curl ifconfig.me` on the RPI I get the public IP of the cloud instance.

How can I ask the RPI to route return packets through the router when they are coming in from eth0

    Edit: solved. Solution in comments

Will moving my modem and router fix my stability issue?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 04:47 PM PDT

Right now I have my RBR20 Router in the living room, and I'm connected to via ethernet to a RBS20 Orbi Satellite (which is basically just a wireless Wifi extender but chunkier) which is across the house. When ever people enter my house, I get massive lag spikes in games and sometimes my connection cuts out for a minute then comes back. They aren't even connected to the internet. I'm assuming this is because there is some interference between their electronic devices and my glorified Wifi extender?

So will calling a pro and having them move the modem and router to my room give me a more stable connection when people are over? I would just like confirmation I will see an improvement. Thank you for responding!

    What is an internet gateway?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 12:31 AM PDT

    Mystery cables

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 12:44 PM PDT

I recently moved into a new apartment and these cables are coming out of the walls of one of the bedrooms. They don't connect to my current internet system. Any ideas on what they are?

My first thought is that a previous tenant had a TV connected to the wall before, but I'm not sure.

What I'd like to do is connect them to my internet system somehow so that I can plug the ethernet cable directly into my computer for faster internet.

Advice on using EoS Cisco managed switch for home network

    Posted: 29 Aug 2021 04:26 PM PDT

I am looking to upgrade my home network and would appreciate some advice around the managed switch I'm considering. Here's some context on what I'm looking to achieve:

    Proposed network

    • Internet speed: 75 Mbps / 5 Mbps.
    • Cable Modem -> Router (OPNSense on SFF PC) -> Managed switch -> Wireless AP
    • Segmented network with VLANs for Work, IoT devices, Home (and potentially others).

    Requirements for switch

    • VLAN aware, managed
    • Budget: ~ 100 USD (new or used).
    • at least 8 ports.
    • PoE not required.
    • RJ45 only, no SFP ports required.
    • Somewhat intuitive. Not a networking expert as a software engineer I'd be comfortable with either a GUI or CLI.

    My specific questions are:

    1. Would the Cisco SG250-08-K9-NA be appropriate for my use case? I realize this isn't a consumer grade product but I'd rather invest in something reliable that will last me a few years.
    2. I see that Cisco announced EoS for the SG 250 line of products. Is this a huge consideration for home use? I realize this means firmware updates will end in 2022 but does this have implications for a device that is walled off from the internet on a home network?
    3. If the SG 250 is not suitable, are there others I could consider?

Appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!
