Fatal issue with Alcatel mobile router, possibly bricked (need help)

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 06:08 PM PDT

Hello I have an Alcatel Linkhub HH40V router and I decided to update the firmware, due to various circumstances I lost the power while it was updating resulting in it now not reacting to any input, - reset button, power button, WPS button have no effect. Plugging in/out power cable has no effect either and there its not possible to connect to it wirelessly. Is there any way to flash the firmware, by other means, to bring the router back to a working state? any help is appreciated!

iPhone hotspot ➡️ Repeater ➡️ Home Wi-Fi Router; could this work and what repeater/extender would you recommend?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 05:22 PM PDT

    https://i.imgur.com/7BEJn38.jpg

Sorry for the poorly drawn diagram I created but to sum things up, I want to stop using my ISP and see if I can get by with my mobile hotspots.

Ideally what I'm looking for is a repeater or router that automatically connects to any of my hotspots I decide to turn on.

I have 3 different phone lines (1 being a tablet which would be the main source of internet) with their own hot spot data cap, so I'd like to be able to just switch hotspots on the fly as they run out of data.

Is there any repeater or Wi-Fi router than can automatically switch to whatever hotspot is currently available?

These are all iOS devices as well if that makes any difference.

    Thanks!

Help me with my first home network

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 04:33 PM PDT

Interested in setting up a wired home network, but have some questions before I start buying stuff and poking holes in the walls. I'm aware there will be a massive influx of people telling me to buy ubiquiti stuff, but i'm not willing to let my 'simple network' feature creep into the $2000+ territory. Not opposed to Ubiquiti but I'm a home user. Currently on Comcast gigabit. I've already purchased cat 6 cable for the whole house.

I have some relatively simple needs:

    - Wired home gigabit network for 6 locations

    - Three wireless access ports

    - 4x POE cameras (leaning towards Armcrest 5mp ultras) using BlueIris on my desktop

    - 3x Access ports

    Gear (up for review)

    - MikroTik hex s router

    - generic 8 port managed switch

    - BV-Tech 9 port POE+ switch (cameras and access ports)

    - 3x Ubiquiti WiFi 6 lite

I'm pretty new to a lot of this (obviously). I've ran plenty of ethernet cords before, but this will be my first stab at creating a dedicated home network. Will this setup work for my relatively simple needs? What am I missing that needs addressed? Genuinely would like to hear opinions.

Which firewall should i use (Sophos, pfSense, etc.)

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 10:57 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I am currently using a 6th gen Apple AirPort Extreme and honestly i like the overall experience although there are some missing functions. It's connected directly to my ISP, i have a gigabit connection.

I am looking to switch to an alternative option and wanted to know if there's something new i could try out.

For the solution, it is important that it supports Multicast (IGMP proxy) so i can watch free tv channels from our ISP. The other thing that should be considered is NAT, UPnP or NAT-PMP. We use both macs and Windows PCs in our home but more important is the number of gaming consoles, of which we have 5 (3x Xbox 360, 1x Xbox One, 1x PS4). We also have two gaming PCs.

I've heard a lot about issues with UPnP setup on pfSense and assigning ports. I actually know how to do it but i'm looking for something that can work when i'm not at home or when someone comes over with their own game console etc. In my current Apple router, there are no such settings at all, it just opens the needed ports and then closes them back again.

Besides that, i thought of making use of the failover feature, so i can hook up a second LTE modem for backup connectivity. And of course, i use the DHCP reservation feature alot since i have "hard-wired" devices and also a bunch of servers.

Apart from everything mentioned above, there's no special use case for me. I don't need any advanced filtering functions etc. I also don't have a lot of ports that are open usually. The only thing that i open to the internet it my OpenVPN server. I host it on a separate appliance, though. So there is no need for my firewall to support it. I don't have a problem getting a license until it is too expensive. Even paying 50 bucks a year for a license is not a problem for me as long as it does the job.

From what i found here, many people recommend pfSense and Untangle. Would Sophos be also a good solution? What else should i consider

Connect Ethernet ports around home to Google fiber

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 08:03 PM PDT

    Hi,

I recently moved into a home where a Google fiber connection is available. So I activated the fiber connection and later realized that the fiber box is in the garage. So I plugged in the charger in the garage, and this turned on the fiber box, and it started blinking.

I went inside the house and realized that I couldn't plug in the Google WiFi router in any available LAN port. I found a port where the plug fits in, and that activated the WiFi connection. I added pictures of the Google WiFi plug and its location.

Later, I tried to use one of the LAN ports to connect my desktop PC to the internet. It seems like the LAN ports are connected to the internet. I went into the closet where all LAN wires seemed to be originating from and realized they are not connected to anything.

I don't understand home networking and trying to understand how to connect my desktop to an existing LAN port and have internet access. I read through some posts, and I think that I need a switch to connect LAN cables to it.

So my questions are 1) Where should I place the switch, and how should I connect it to the fiber box (if needed) 2) The tips of LAN wires at the origin seem to have been pulled apart (?). Do I have to reword them to LAN port and then connect to switch

I am sorry for my confusing post, as I don't know how to explain it better. I have attached few pics of the garage where the fiber box is, the closet where all the LAN wires are merging, and the port and cable used to connect to Google fiber.

Questions about Fiber Channel bandwidth and SFP+

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 01:22 PM PDT

Can someone clarify how SFP+ officially only supported 8Gb/s Fiber Channel at launch, but has iterated to 16 and now 32Gb/s over time? I'm trying to wrap my head around it. Is the hardware changing in the SFP+ transceivers to support this, or can old 8Gb/s transceivers migrate somehow to use 32Gb/s Fiber Channel. Any good reading on the topic is very much appreciated.

    Edit: Changed SFP to SFP+

Need help buying a wireless router for 1000mbps connection

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 08:33 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a wireless router to take advantage of my home's 1000mbps connection. I rarely use the wired LAN connection so I'm wanting a router which has fast speeds over 5G. In my country, most of the routers are TP Link, although there are a few ASUS and D Link also available. I've seen the following routers for sale locally:

    TP Link Archer AX10

    TP Link Archer AX20

    TP Link Archer AX50

    TP Link Archer A9 & A10

    TP Link Archer C6

    TP Link Archer AC2300

    TP Link Archer C80 & C7

    D Link DIR2150

    ASUS RT-AC53

    ASUS RT-AC66U

    ASUS RT-AC68U

Aside from good 5G speeds, I also need a router which I can set DMZ and port forward. I'm not particularly interested in file transferring on my network. I've read many reviews, but it seems most reviews are using plans below 1000mbps so it's not easy to see how these routers perform with faster connections.

Any recommendations from the list above? I've read good things about Archer AX50 but it seems many users have problems with connections being cut and over heating...

    Thanks!

Where to mount an UAP AC M outside ?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 08:29 PM PDT

We just put in a new patio and it's like a dead zone out there. Can I mount it on the soffit up against the house or should it go on the house? It's the northwest corner which gets a lot of weather.

TP Link RE300 (EU) doesn't recognise my Archer A6 (EU)'s 5Ghz WiFi. Please help me out.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 07:26 PM PDT

All my wireless devices can detect both bands of Archer A6. I have updated the firmware of both devices from the website. I can't change channels, because I like to use WiFi in Smart Connect mode. I really think TP Link is scamming people with their extenders.

    Redmi AX6 System Orange Light

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 05:49 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm having trouble setting up my Xiaomi AX6. I turn it on the LAN of my standard internet modem and connect directly to the WAN, but it doesn't leave this light. I tried to set the IP/Gateway/DNS and other manual settings, I rebooted, but I still can't access the router page. I downloaded the firmware directly from the miwifi website and nothing too.

    Any suggestion?

Troubleshooting a bottleneck in Ethernet wired home

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 05:10 PM PDT

WHY THE DOWNVOTES, AM I SAYING SOMETHING CONTROVERSIAL!?!?!

How do determine if my homes cat5 cable inside the wall or the Ethernet wall socket is throttling/bottleneck my speed?

In the USA and my house was wired for Ethernet when built back in 2006. I've upgraded my internet to fiber (100mbps to 1gbps) and speed test still show 100mbps if I have a client connected to the fiber router via ethernet using that wall socket.

The Ethernet cable from socket to my client is fine, so please understand I am only talking about wiring inside the walls. I'd prefer not losing more wire length either, so non-destructive testing best.

    Best router for FIOS? (200/200)

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 04:46 PM PDT

    Hi,

Networking noob here. I have been using ISP routers all my life. I'm about to move to a new 950 sq ft apartment and I decided to buy my own router to save the extra cash.

I am looking for a robust, easy to set up router which can take care of my basic needs - streaming, working, video calls, etc.

But I want it to be future proof enough that I can use it for more demanding use cases if needed( planning to build a PC soon for gaming)

According to my research, the Asus AX86U is great but I want to make sure that it doesn't cause any issues with FIOS( read a few posts mentioning that)

    Any suggestions?

Just bought a 3-pack of mesh router set, should I connect all three of them separately to a gigabit router/switch, or two of them to the main mesh router and the main mesh router to the modem itself?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 04:45 PM PDT

I bought a nighthawk 3 pack mesh bundle and am trying to maximize my performance, I don't know much about how the data transfers work so I wanted to ask this.

For those of who don't understand the question, I wanted to see if it was faster for the 3-pack to act as separate access points to a single router/switch or whether to use the two 'satellite' mesh routers to connect to the main router.

    I have a feeling it's the same....

Basically it's the differences between the first option and second option in the diagram in the link below:

Need to move network cage - Best practices for recabling?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 04:31 PM PDT

Hi All - We are going through a remodel and I will be moving my network cage to the new den area. Many of the existing cabling will be too short. Can I splice additional wiring on, or use couplers, or is it just best to run new cabling, which, of course, would not be my first choice. Looking for best practices so I can get this done properly.

    Thanks!

Looking for a new router for VPN (ps4)

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 12:43 PM PDT

I'd like to use it for my ps4. My current router doesn't support vpn. I have a few questions 1. Do littlerly all asus routers still work with vpn? (There's many for only €30,-) 2. Does one need an expensive router, for open vpn to work on ps4? 3. Would I need to install any software on the (cheaper) routers ?

    Thanks in advance

How to convert ADSL Line into Ethernet connection ?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 12:19 PM PDT

I'm just sick of this whole damn country using ADSL line as the main line for internet connectivity. I have a standard Ethernet Router that I want to use but I'm stuck in the limbo for at least month. I have tried to find DrayTek V130 but it's sold out everywhere.

My only options are buying some crap ADSL Router that is outdate and has so many vulnerabilities like a swiss cheese and would double NAT or my crappy ISP combo box that probably has as much vulnerabilities and gives access to my LAN for anyone who works for the said ISP. None of the options are great.

Except going to used market, buying full ADSL Combo Box or using ISP Router, are there any solutions that would allow me to convert ADSL connection to the ethernet one so that I can use any router like a normal person ?

    Mix-n-match Unifi & Mikrotik?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 03:39 PM PDT

The home network, such as it is, is all Unifi. USG, USW 8 port 60w, Nano HD AP, Flex Mini. We are looking to extend the networking to a detached shop that is maybe 50 ft away, at the closest point. Most of the existing network equipment (including the Nano) is located such that there are enough walls and distance that wifi reception in the shop is negligible at best. I considered trenching ethernet over to the structure, but there's a 3 ft tall retaining wall in the way that complicates things.

Right now I actually have a Nano station and an air gateway acting as a repeater, but I'm not loving that solution. I originally got the hardware for something else (repeater for RV park wifi), and want to free it back up for that use. I also want more bandwidth to/from the shop, so I can locate some backup equipment out there and not be too crippled by the connection speed.

So now I'm looking at a wireless point-to-point bridge between the two buildings. Initially I was looking into the Unifi UBB as a more or less turn-key solution, but then I came across the Mikrotik "Wireless Wire" kits. Little bit less money, supposedly also 'turn-key', and been on the market for a few years now. Also available ie not sold out.

After all the preamble, I guess my questions are a) has anyone here had any hands on experience with either / both systems? Do they work as advertised? b) If I stick the Mikrotik wireless bridge between the buildings, and then put another Unifi wireless AP downstream, will I be able to 'roam' between the house, backyard and shop better than what I have now where I have just enough overlap that I end up with devices hanging onto weak connections to one SSID/AP well into the range of the other. And c) is the 5 ghz 'backup' mode of the UBB worth the extra $$$?

    Thanks!

Adaptive QOS solution for mobile networks?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 03:31 PM PDT

Does anyone have any QOS solutions that adjust QOS rules for fluctuating bandwidth?

For example I am currently running an ERX with the SQM on a DSL line. The speed is pretty stable currently so it works well. But it is expensive for the speeds I do get. I am looking to test out T-Mobile Home Internet to get a higher speed. My only issue is the variable speed of the connection.

I need something that periodically tests the connection and adjust the QOS rules accordingly.

Cat5e structured cable in wall is twisted and distorted

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 11:18 AM PDT

Found twisted distortion marks on cat5e structured cable that's in the wall. It seemed the cable was twisted round a few times and now has some areas which are narrow and where I can't fully untwist. I don't know much about networking and I'm wondering if I should be concerned. Should I just crimp and terminate the cable before the twisted part as there is sufficient excess cable length.

How to setup POE mesh AP devices - TP Link

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 03:02 PM PDT

    Hey all,

Our new house has Ethernet ports everywhere. Literally every room except for toilet closets. It also has fiber internet available.

So I was able to get a PoE switch at the panel and hook all of our devices directly into a LAN connection.

This is important for me because I work from home and often need to transfer large file sizes to different computers or devices.

The only bad part is the house is laid out in such a way that a regular WiFi signal doesn't work very well. This means our mobile devices don't work well and can't transfer files well at all. I even got a "high end" router from Costco (TP Link AX11000) before we got the house thinking it could provide full coverage, and that it would handle our GB fiber internet well and also allow intranet high speed transfers.

    Nope.

Is there a good TP Link system (or other brand) where I could get a non-WiFi router at my switch (and get my $300 back in the AX11000), and then plug a few mesh APs into some of the extra Ethernet ports around the house to carry and expand that signal throughout the house?

I would need them to be ceiling/wall mountable, have PoE capabilities, and be able to handle large (10Gb+) intranet network transfer speeds when needed.

WiFi 6 and dual band (or tri band) would be great too.

I'd like to set it up as a mesh system so it's all one network, and not 3 or 4 networks with slightly different names like you would get with extenders.

how to get my existing cat5e ports to work throughout my house

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 02:51 PM PDT

right now I'm trying to get my existing cat5e ports throughout my house to work

ideally i have a loft area with my router and all the things I want using a wired internet connection plugged into my router. the only other wired connection I want is in my pc in the next room over. the rest of the ports it would be nice to use a wifi bridge or repeater to just boost the wifi reception.

so I've posted some pictures of the setup I'm working with. basically I just need to get a good idea of what tools I need to purchase to test and get everything working.

the ethernet cable attached to the wall where I kee my router/modem is a yellow orange looking cable and when I look in this panel in the master bath it doesn't even look connected.

i'm kind of assuming I would need to figure which of the orange cables is connected to that wall port, punch it into the line in on the panel and then move the other ethernet cables to the other lines.

thanks for reading and any help

ifconfig showing 2 IPs on one interface

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 02:49 PM PDT

Recently I've been having some latency issues and packet loss (DUP errors), and today I realized that one of my interfaces is showing 2 IP addresses. This is on a Kubuntu/ Linux PC.

Does anyone know why this is and how I can correct it? This PC is just hardwired and does not have an active wifi connection (disabled)

Edit: I mean to say ip a is showing me this, not ipconfig

How bad is the FragAttacks vulnerability?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2021 11:03 AM PDT

So yeah, my Asus router is old and I think it's vulnerable to the FragAttacks Wifi vulnerability. The manufacturer doesn't provide any updates for it, they officially state it's EOL. The Merlin firmware is also EOL'ed. It's however supported by DD-WRT, I'm thinking if I should install that.

All my client devices are up to date so some of the attacks are mitigated. But NAT hole punching for example is possible. Maybe not a big problem since I use strict firewall rules on most of my devices. But it's a vulnerability, it's there.

I'm not very interested to buy a new router, the current one is still working well and I don't want to produce unnecessary e-waste.
