Alternatives to Ubiquiti for all-in-one management? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:21 AM PDT I use Ubiquiti at my house and I love it, but I'm trying to get a family member squared away who has somewhat involved requirements (a house and detached garage outside mesh range) and I don't think Ubiquiti is in their budget. That said, I'll probably be the one supporting this so having something bulletproof with unified management is important to me. Are there some cost-effective options out there that support a centralized router/switch/configuration and attaching some wifi extenders/AP's via CAT6 that don't require discrete configuration? [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:11 PM PDT I don't understand much networking terms and it seems really confusing on whether wifi 6 is good, 6e, wifi 5 etc etc, so if someone can help me I'd really appreciate it. [link] [comments]
Can I assign a 2nd Public IP to a certain device? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 04:30 PM PDT My apartment complex requires everyone to pay monthly for an "All in one" Internet package that includes a Ruckus H510 AP inside every apartment. I setup my Raspberry Pi with nginx proxy manager to access a few of my self hosted applications from outside my network, but ran into an issue when I realized the apartment wifi utilized ports 80 and 443 for the Router Management Portal. Whenever I attempted navigating to my Public IP (Example: 99.99.999.20) I would be redirected to that Router Management Portal. I ended up reaching out to the people that manage our Internet and somehow they managed to assign a 2nd Public IP (Example: 99.99.999.15) to my Raspberry Pi that does not redirect to the Router Management Portal and allows nginx to work perfect. So now, my Raspberry Pi is connected to its own Public IP (Example: 99.99.999.15) and everything else is connected to the original Public IP (Example: 99.99.999.20). Now for the issue I ran in to today. I had some free time so decided to unmount/disconnect the Ruckus AP and connect my old R7800 with dd-wrt installed just to see if I can get more control over my network as the apartment only gives us the ability to forward ports. The R7800 booted up fine and my devices connected with no issue. However, I noticed I had a new Public IP (Example: 99.99.999.25) for all my devices (including the Pi). This caused nginx to stop working because when navigating to the new Public IP it was still redirecting me to the Router Management Portal even though the Ruckus was disconnected. Is there possibly a way for me to use my Pi's mac address and the 2nd Public IP they previously assigned my Pi (Example from earlier: 99.99.999.15) to create a rule or policy that will enforce this on the ddwrt router? I know I'm probably doing an awful job of explaining this as I could barely find any help on google, so any advise/suggestions are greatly appreciated! One other odd thing I did notice with the Pi after connecting it to the R7800 is that I was unable to ping or tracert its hostname. I could ping its new local IP just fine but I could not get any response using the hostname nor hostname.local. Though this wasn't a huge issue, just something I happened to notice. Best way to ground/surge protect coax Posted: 31 Aug 2021 11:32 AM PDT Hey, so we had a crazy storm here Sunday, trees fell and knocked out power a couple streets over and the internet went out for about 36 hours. After our area was cleared from the major outage I was still without internet... turned out that even though I have my router and modem on an APC UPS and surge protector, the coax itself is not protected and it seems the storm wrecked the modem and fried the WAN port on my router and the only possible place it could have happened was through that coax. So one new router later and using one if my LAN ports as a new WAN port I have internet and networking again and I am let with preventing this from happening again. So what is going to be my best option for surge protecting the coax cable without mucking up the signal strength? [link] [comments]
Shared internet with tenants in one house Posted: 31 Aug 2021 04:53 PM PDT There was a post from 6 years ago that talked about this but I think it's fair to bring up the topic again. Situation: I live in a house that is separated into 3 private units. I live in one unit and I rent the other two units with utilities included. Spectrum will only provide one account to the address so I currently share WiFi for the tenants. I want to be able to provide internet to my tenants but I don't know the best way to maintain privacy and security. I was planning on using a Ethernet switch on my modem and then using the TP link powerline adapter into the other two units and they can plug in their own router for their own WiFi network. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments]
Stream the screen laptop to a Smart TV via LAN Wired Posted: 31 Aug 2021 08:00 PM PDT Hello Guys I would like to know if there is a way to stream the screen of my laptop to a Smart TV via LAN wired? In Internet I haven't found a solution. Someone told me that maybe VLC Player could be the solutions but I think this just transmit just video or images storaged on my laptop and not to stream on live the screen of my laptop. If you know a solution I would appreciate it [link] [comments]

Birthday party ruined my wifi speed? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:35 PM PDT I don't really know anything about wifi speed and how it works but I've had a problem for the last couple days I recently bought a new wifi repeater to spread my wifi across the house and it was working decently well for gaming and streaming multiple videos at a time so I had no complaints then my mum threw a party for my brother lots of people connected to the wifi and it's been pretty bad for the last week I've turned the main router and the repeater off multile times and it's still lackluster is there something I should or could do? Shared Internet - No access to ethernet, looking for a partial solution Posted: 31 Aug 2021 05:36 PM PDT I am going to be moving into the basement apartment of an old small 8 unit building. Internet is included for free, the con being the router not being in my unit, instead it's in the unit immediately above me. My unit has no ethernet, coaxial or seemingly any way to run cable from the unit above me. I haven't moved in so I don't have all details as to the router model, speeds or some smaller details like that. My landlord has access to where the router is stored if I need something plugged into the main router (just as a one off when I move in). In short I am looking for a way to get access to an ethernet port in my unit to run my own router. Both to gain some security due to the shared internet but also so I can plug in some devices (Philips hue bridge, NAS etc.). I have a TP-Link C7 V2 router I can bring with to integrate into any solution I decide on. Options I have been exploring so far: Wi-Fi Extender with ethernet, travel router, powerline adapter etc. I can handle some decrease in internet speed if it's going to be a reliable, cost effective option. My internet use case involves no gaming and is streaming, video calls, upload/download of files and general web browsing. Given the facts provided I'd like to get some thoughts on what course of action you would take if you were in my position and with that if you have a specific brand or model of the device you would recommend. Thanks in advance [link] [comments]
Common Question, Which Router? Details inside! Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:42 AM PDT Hello! I know this is a common question and I have been reading reviews and comparisons between the ASUS - ROG Rapture AX11000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 6 Router / Asus RTAX86U Dual Band WiFi 6 Gaming Router. Price tag ignored which is the more recommended. We have a plethora of wifi connections, and I will more than likely be hard wired for gaming. Plus I'd like to dabble in a little home networking. Please and thank you for all info / recommendations given. [link] [comments]
Not sure what to do with this panel want to connect all Ethernet ports to one Ethernet port Posted: 31 Aug 2021 04:52 PM PDT I would post a picture but I don't think this community allows pictures. I moved into a new home and there's a panel and lots of Ethernet wires next to them. does anyone know where I could learn about how to connect them to allow all these Ethernet ports that are around my home to be connected to each other? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 07:01 AM PDT The wifi on my router (Netgear R6900P) drops randomly throughout the day. There are about 4 devices attached through wifi and two through ethernet. When the sudden drops happen, the ethernet connections have no interruption in service. Sometimes, the wifi doesn't recover and requires a router reboot in order to restore. This issue started appearing after I moved this past weekend. I had no issues at my old apartment with the same router and same service provider (verizon fios). Solutions I've tried:
The 4 wireless devices are two work laptops on VPNs, and two iphones. All 4 devices instantly disconnect at the same time. Would anyone know why this issue might be occurring? Edit: I switched one device onto the 2.4Ghz band and left the other 3 on 5Ghz band. When the wifi disconnected, the one device on 2.4 stayed connected while the other 3 went down. It seems like 5Ghz consistently drops. [link] [comments]
How to host private home POTS network? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 10:46 AM PDT Is it possible to host a local home POTS network, completely private and disconnected from outside POTS lines? Essentially I want to host a POTS network in my house so I can put cheap POTS phones at various rooms and be able to pick up those phones and talk to other rooms. Maybe have it ring if possible. What kind of hardware/switches would I need to buy in order to make that work? From my limited understanding, I know POTS phones are powered over the line. So it would seem something like a PoE switch is needed. Can anyone help me out here? I searched this community and couldn't find answers specific to this intent. I want to use POTS tech instead of ethernet for the (hopefully) simplicity and cheapness of it. But I am open to other alternative suggestions. What I'm really keen on is using old-style phones to communicate with. [link] [comments]
How do I connect/log on directly to the cable modem through my router? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 04:09 PM PDT The router is hooked up to a Ubiquit Edgerouter X. I can connect to the erx with the normal 192.168.1.1, how do I connect all the way through directly into the cable modem? I want to check out it's settings. [link] [comments]
Bandwidth with devices connected to a network switch Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:18 PM PDT I just saw the Linus talking about network switches in the WAN show and wanted to ask something: If I have a network switch with let's say 5 ports. Will 5 devices connected to that switch each communicate at Gigabit speed with each other? So PC 1 and 3 will have one gigabit to use just like 2 and 4? I always thought that the communication between the devices connected to the same switch can have one gigabit at max not each connection? If the switch is connected to another one, it is clear that the bottleneck becomes the single connection between those switches but I never thought about the local communication on the same switch. How do I structure my wi-Fi for a Split Level Apartment? Posted: 30 Aug 2021 09:20 PM PDT I have limited knowledge on this subject so excuse my ignorance. Service issue: I have been having a terrible Wi-Fi connection with spotty service along the bottom floor. My modem and router are located on the top level, and there is only one coax cable to which those are connected. There are no other coax cables in the apartment. There is one range extender located in the middle of the bottom floor. I maintain an OK connection when I am near the router with almost nonexistent connections moving to the bedroom (using both the extender channel or the source channel. The bedroom is the farthest location from the router on the top level and that is the only wall separating the bottom level. I have 400 Mbps download internet speed that drops to about 10-15% of that over Wi-Fi downstairs. Split-level description: I have a split-level apartment of roughly 650 ft2 . Picture the top floor as a rectangle with a square cut out at one of the corners for the staircase. The coax connection for the modem and router is at the opposite corner 20 feet away. Apartment Specifications:
Possible options and recommendations: What path should I take to fix this issue? I have tried moving the router closer to the cutout with nonsignificant improvements. Should I (not in a particular order) consider:
ISP Equipment: Spectrum modem: Motorola E31U2V1 Spectrum router: Sagemcom SAC2V2S I am switching to these: My modem: Arris SURFboard SB8200 My router: TP-Link AC1900 [link] [comments]
D-Link DGS-1210-28 not reachable via some connections Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:09 PM PDT I have two DGS-1210-28 (rev. F1), "Switch A" and "Switch B", and from some connections I cannot reach B. For example, it times out via OpenVPN -> Router -> Switch A -> Switch B, even though that router and the two switches are in the same VID 1 have IPs in the same subnet and I can access other switches in that subnet/VLAN without issues via OpenVPN. Direct connections via ethernet always work. The connection via Wi-Fi AP -> Switch A -> Switch B also works fine (though it is sometimes oddly slow). [link] [comments]
Trying to use Archer C50 as bridge, main router loses connection when turning on Archer Posted: 31 Aug 2021 05:22 AM PDT Hi. I recently moved into a room and the router (A 4G Huawei B535) is on the other side of the apartment. Im trying to setup my old Archer C50 router as a bridge/repeater, but after configuring it then when i turn it on the signal from the main router gets disconnected and I cant get any connection when trying to connect to either. I've followed the guide from TP-LINK and done everything, but as I said when the Archer is turned on I can briefly connect to it (no internet through it though) and then the main router instantly loses all connection until I turn off the Archer again. I hope anyone can point me in the right direction, if you need anymore info please let me know. [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 11:20 AM PDT With the fires going on out here in California I decided to get a purpleair sensor and use it to track the air quality at my house. Here is the issue: 1: The purple air has a access point (purpleair-xxx) and it uses 192.168.4 for it's network. 2: My house uses 192.168.4.x for it's network and I have a lot of crap both static and dhcp devices. Talking with the purpleair support they want me to change my network to something else but that's not going to work for me. (I'm lazy). I don't think I can serve up a different dhcp address (i.e. 192.168.10.1) to the purpleair device because the router will still be my 192.168.4.x address. I'm curious if anyone has a suggestion. Note that I do host my own dhcp server and am using a UDM-Pro for the router to the world (with multiple switches in the middle). Also Ubiquity AC access points. Thanks for any help. Will MOCA adapters work with a house that has DirecTV equipment, but not an active DirecTV service? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:40 PM PDT My wife and I just bought a somewhat large 2-story house, but we have a crappy AT&T router that barely covers our current tiny rent house. I was thinking about remedying signal issues with MOCA. However, this house is hooked up with DirecTV that the previous owners used. We have no plans to get any kind of satalite TV, but will this equipment prevent MOCA from working properly? I am not very familiar with how all of this works together, so I appreciate if anyone has an answer for me before I purchase the adapters. [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:31 PM PDT Is it possible to connect a POE camera to a wireless access points, I understand it is not 100% reliable and wired is preferable but I'm willing to take the risk as the connection has never dropped in couple years.. any advice would be much appreciated [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:26 PM PDT I've recently set up my gaming console in my bedroom. Obviously, in an ideal world, I would be wired into the internet, but I am too far from the router/modem and I would hate to run a cord through my home. So I've been playing on the wifi and have already run into some major problems. After some research, I bought a MoCA adapter. I can't for the life of me get it to work and I can't get someone to come out to help me with it until Sept. 11. I was wondering if it would make sense for me to get another router or something else. I'm open to any options and money isn't a big concern as long as I'm not paying a monthly fee for another network or something. Any suggestions or tips are greatly appreciated. TL;DR: Want to wire my game console in my bedroom to internet and looking for advice on best way to do so. Thanks! Don't know if this information is relevant but I use Spectrum and live in an apartment. [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:21 PM PDT I'm using a decora-style wallplate insert that can accept six keystone jacks. The Monoprice punch-down keystone jacks fit in perfectly with almost no gap. However, as I was inspecting my job, I began to get a little worried about potential cross-talk. As you can see, the punch-down tool cuts off the wires but there's still a small, minuscule fragment poking out. Is it possible that there could end up being some electrical contact between adjacent keystones? I've posted pictures of this. The first shows the edges of the wires after being punched into the keystone. The second shows how close the keystones are to each other. Is this cause for concern? If so, is there any simple way to test for crosstalk? I'm currently testing each jack separately (running iperf to verify symmetric gigabit speeds before moving to the next jack). Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:08 PM PDT Good evening, I'm thinking about replacing my old asus router, as I experience frequent packet drops and I can't really monitor the traffic in any detailed way. Also I'm thinking it can't handle the throughput as well as another router could(?). Currently I'm on cable 1000/50 asymmetrical. - Homeserver w/ unRaid + couple dockers - 2 PCs - multiple consoles that I'd like to hardwire. - IoT is not planned as of now, but perhaps in the future. ~65ish sqrm apartment. For starters I had the ER-X, R-605 and mikrotik hex s eyed for a closer inspection, but I'd like advice. I'd like to stay away from xSense due to electric bills. It's high enough as it is now. Apparently the ER-X does struggle when trying to deliver the full 1000mbs. The ER-4 should be able to do such with easy. The other two I'm not sure. Furthermore the popular belief seems to be that the edge line is silently being shifted to EOL, but alas I can't confirm or deny that. How is the unifi line itself? Does a counterpart to the Edgerouter exist without being an AIO solution? I've looked at the mikrotik online demo and I'm kinda baffled tbh. I do like tinkering and am learning/working in the field, but for home use it does seem to need more attention then I'd like. Perhaps someone can chime in and give me advice and/or offer an alternative? For AP I'd like to use the old asus router, but I assume I would update to an unifi AP or TP-L one down the line, not sure about that. All in all I'd like the budget to be within 150~€ for the router. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Do I have to alter my IP address in order to use the ethernet on a MOCA adapter? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 02:07 PM PDT Hello, I am fairly new to this if you can't tell. I recently changed cable services and no longer will have access to my cable box in my room which I was previously using as a Coax to Ethernet converter. (The modem is elsewhere in the house) I bought the GoCoax WF-803M Moca 2.5 ethernet adapter in hopes of replacing my cable box in its function as an ethernet adapter. After trying to set it up and doing some research I am at a loss. I understand that a MOCA network is for wireless networking? and that you need 2 with one being connected to your modem. But I am not trying to use the wireless network I am simply trying to use the ethernet being converted from the COAX cord. When I go to my network settings it says my ethernet is not getting any connection. I guess my main question is am I using this correctly? can a MOCA converter simply be used as a coax to ethernet converter? [link] [comments] |
