Biggest regrets/mistakes building my first computer Posted: 19 Jul 2021 10:49 AM PDT The big mistakes and regrets I built a few months ago when I finished building my first pc with little knowledge, I just picked out parts for around 5 minutes and find the cheapest parts I can get off Amazon, my lists of regrets contains: Ryzen 5 3600 (I genuinely could've got a i5 11400F if I had researched more since it was more powerful at a cheaper price. ) 120mm AIO, (Ml120) this does not need explanation. I could have just used my stock Ryzen Cooler, this was such an unnecessary part since I could've spent that extra on a GPU. 500w EVGA 80+ Gold PSU, this one is debatable since it's 80+ gold but with a drawback of 500w If I ever plan on upgrading to a better GPU. Cheap motherboard, I use an Asrock A520m-hdv when I can spend a couple of that AIO money on something like a b460m. Storage: 240gb WD Green m.2 2TB WD green HDD (this was unnecessary when I could've went for something with 500+ GB Ssd and a 1tb 3.5 drive) Other than that, I am not ungrateful nor hate my parts, I just wished I went and took more research of what I could've saved that budget on for other parts that would be useful for what I do. I'm grateful for my computer parts just to clear things up. I don't have any much to say other than that. [link] [comments]
I accidentally got thermal paste in the CPU socket of my brand new PC... It somehow all worked out. Posted: 18 Jul 2021 07:30 PM PDT Pro tip from someone who's not a pro and nearly had a heart attack today due to my sloppiness. Be extra careful when you take off you CPU cooler, clean off thermal paste, and when you apply fresh thermal paste to your CPU... I have no idea how or when a small strand of paste fell into the CPU socket, but when I noticed it I nearly died. I tried my best to clean it off but not all of it came out. Thankfully it was non-conductive and it seems like I managed to clean it well enough to cause no issues to my PC since it runs perfectly fine. TLDR; I got thermal paste in my CPU socket on my new PC. I got lucky and it was fine. [link] [comments]
Is the steam deck better for games than my laptop? I am interested in the 256GB version. Posted: 19 Jul 2021 08:43 AM PDT I like the idea of the portability of the steam deck, and my laptop can handle (mostly) all the games I want to play. But I am thinking from what I have read the steam deck is better performance graphics wise correct? (I cannot run jedi fallen order on high settings for example at anywhere decent frame rate) Just want to make sure. Thanks! My Laptop: System Manufacturer/Model Number: Lenovo ideapad flex 14API 2 in 1 OS: Windows 10 Home x64 Latest version CPU: Ryzen 5 3500u Motherboard: LENOVO LNVNB161216 (FP5) Memory: 12GB DDR4 Graphics Card: AMD Radeon Vega 8 Graphics Screen Resolution: 1920 x 1080 Hard Drives: 256 GB Samsung ssd nvme VS Steam deck: Processor AMD APU CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32) GPU: 8 RDNA 2 CUs, 1.0-1.6GHz (up to 1.6 TFlops FP32) APU power: 4-15W RAM 16 GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s dual-channel) Storage 64 GB eMMC (PCIe Gen 2 x1) 256 GB NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 3 x4) 512 GB high-speed NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 3 x4) EDIT: Thanks everyone for your help, def going to continue going through with it. I will keep an eye out for benchmarks going forward, but I think it will be a sweet little system and will prob run games better than my laptop so thanks. Posted: 19 Jul 2021 12:11 PM PDT so I'd always thought my cpu temps where a little high considering I have an NHD15 cooler but they were always well within safe limits so I never really bothered with it much but i finally decided to take a look, and noticed the fans were blowing the wrong way 🤦♂️, changed it around and my idle temps have gone from 45~ ish to as low as 32C. I feel like an idiot haha. [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jul 2021 10:06 AM PDT Is 512gb ssd and 1tb hdd not enough, just right, or overkill if I would install 6-7 games? Some of the games might come from this list: CoD Warzone CP 2077 GTA 5 R6 Seige RDR2 AC Valhalla [link] [comments]
Do I need an NVME SSD heat sink? Posted: 18 Jul 2021 05:29 PM PDT I've seen that most nvme SSD's have heat sinks, so for the hell of it it felt mine (un-sinked) and it was very hot to the touch. Should I get a nvme ssd heatsink? Edit: Thanks everyone for your feedback! My motherboard didn't my come with a heat sink , nor my NVME drive, so I ended up just grabbing a super cheap and crappy one from eBay. Made sure it had red RGB to auto OC it to increase data transfer speeds! [link] [comments]
Stuttering on high-end PC, reaching my wits' end. Posted: 19 Jul 2021 09:43 AM PDT Hi all, I've recently been trying to nail down and get rid of this annoying stuttering issue my PC has been having in all games, it's been going on for a few months now and in that time I've:
I've ran out of things to test software / hardware wise. Temps are fine, there are no strange noises or weird smells. Nothing is burnt, broke or hanging off. No loose screws and no contact between case and mobo. The only things I can think of it being is the following:
For clarity's sake, here are my specs:
Using a noctua NH-D15 as my cooler if that matters, but like I said, I've had no issues with temps. Please help :( EDIT: Quick edit. I was getting some pretty nasty black screens that would force me to restart a few months ago too. One was while loading into a League game, another was using Adobe Premiere. This didn't happen again until recently when I got what looked like a driver crash (black screen, window of currently played game minimised and what looked like an NVIDIA error popped up in the top right, disappeared too quick to get a good look at it). I have a clip of it happening, but you can't see much from it. [link] [comments]
What GPU's aren't ugly side up? Posted: 19 Jul 2021 09:01 AM PDT https://i.imgur.com/OmyEJ7M.jpg First build. 5600X, MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus, reference 6700XT, 2 sticks of RGB Crucial Ballistix at 3600 (looks like single rank), in a decent looking case (NZXT 710i). I'll be honest, I made at least a few choices for aesthetics. I spent a solid month or two fussing about what parts to buy trying to balance looks and with optimization. The one thing I couldnt possibly anticipiate... why the heck is the GPU ugly side up? A reference 6700x is okay on looks, but the way it's set up the flat & untextured back plate, serial number and bar code are showing. Got a couple changes I want to make... first being to trade my card to get a GPU that isn't ugly side up or at least vertical mount it. What cards are ugly side down? Nvidia GPU driver BSODs are killing me... Posted: 19 Jul 2021 02:27 PM PDT About a week ago I bought a EVGA 3080ti and used it to render and game with no issues. Fast forward to the night before last and I'm getting BSODs left and right. At first it was a DCP_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION, but now it's a repeated VIDEO_TDR_ERROR. After a shit ton of troubleshooting, I found out it was the GPU drivers using a program called WhoCrashed. My old 970 works fine, but this new 3080ti just cannot be stable for one minute. I've downloaded EVERY driver available for this card and none of them are stable, not even the driver that I was using before. I changed nothing hardware nor software wise that caused this crash. Below is a list of things I did to troubleshoot. -Reinstalled Windows -Used DDU and reinstalled drivers MANY times -Reseated everything in the PC -Updated all pertinent drivers -Verified all drivers & system files I really am at my wits end. I use this computer to do work for school (I do film and 3D animation so I use the power a lot) and really can't be losing so much time to errors like this. I feel like every time I update my PC there's an inevitable wave of BSODs I have to shuffle through... As always, any help is greatly appreciated. Ryzen 5 5600X or Ryzen 7 3700X? Posted: 19 Jul 2021 03:49 PM PDT Cant decide between the two for my first build. Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated. Looking for 60fps and medium to high quality graphics. Will be mostly playing single player games. With the exception of Dayz. Advice on purchase of refurbished monitor Posted: 19 Jul 2021 01:55 PM PDT Hey so i found a deal on a refurbished/slightly used (like amazon warehouse only from different company) MSI Optix MAG274QRFDE-QD for 359 €. Is this a good deal or should i keep my fingers of refurbished monitors? Also if i would by it what things should i check that might be damaged (it is not stated what is wrong with the monitor exactly). Fyi other monitors such as GIGABYTE M27Q and Dell S2721DGFA cost like 350 € and 390 € respectively. Ty for ur advice :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jul 2021 03:47 PM PDT With GPU prices going down in Europe will it be worth it to find a European site, buy a GPU, and ship it to the U.S., Or will it be the same? [link] [comments]
Old PC finally kicked the bucket - time to upgrade Posted: 19 Jul 2021 01:35 PM PDT My old rig that I built in 2013 finally kicked the bucket. It has served me well with no changes except upgrading the GPU and adding a couple small SSDs I got for free. Old build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/g669Mv I'm looking to upgrade and rebuild within the next couple days. It will mostly be used for gaming, along with some programming/electronics work/etc. Nothing too crazy. Budget is flexible. Any advice is appreciated! Here's what I've got so far:

Moving from Laptop w/ eGPU to decent Gaming PC Build Posted: 19 Jul 2021 03:45 PM PDT Hi all, I haven't physically put together a PC in about 15 years let alone pieced one out. I've done a good bit of research and am budgeting around $1,000 (sell laptop and egpu case) + parts I already have that can carry over. My biggest concerns are around case, PSU, and what additional wiring or fans I might need? I care exactly 0% about looks/rbg. Is there any way to buy a new Ryzen without a fan to save money? Posted: 19 Jul 2021 01:23 PM PDT EDIT: I mean can the CPU not come with a fan because I have a different one and don't need 2 [link] [comments]
Computer randomly turns off while playing games; bad graphics card? Posted: 19 Jul 2021 01:22 PM PDT This is my first PC built with the help of my partner. My computer keeps turning off when loading a game in Dota, or at random times with Cyberpunk. Thus far all signs point to my graphics card (Raedon RX 580, 8gb, 3 fan ASUS ROG-STRIX) and I am open to any suggestions on how to make things work normally again. The card was previously used for cryptomining. There are no error messages, strange sounds, blue screen... just off without warning. Thus far (with a little help) I have:
I was able to borrow another graphics card (RX 480) and everything works without issue, which at least sort of isolates the problem. Sadly graphics cards are hard to come by at the moment. Any other suggestions on what to check or how to fix things? [link] [comments]
Is it normal to be paranoid your first build? Posted: 19 Jul 2021 03:20 PM PDT All of my parts besides the graphics card and hard drives which haven't came yet are in and there's still wiring to do, I think I've done everything properly but I can't help but believe I screwed up something [link] [comments]
What are some general PC tips for an absolute beginner? Posted: 18 Jul 2021 06:27 PM PDT Not just building tips, I'm building my first PC soon but I've also never had a PC before (only shitty Macs and Macbooks). Any tips for supernoobs including managing when to turn pc off/on and similar basics? [link] [comments]
Custom GPU water cooling loop questions Posted: 19 Jul 2021 03:10 PM PDT I just wanted to run my config by some people to make sure I have the right idea. I've attached a photoshop illustration here. the red lines are tubing and the blue arrows show my flow. I feel this should work fine, the only thing I'm wondering is should I reverse flow and have the water go thru the pump first from GPU instead of the rad? is there and big differences? Help me understand gen 3/4 compatability Posted: 19 Jul 2021 03:07 PM PDT So in looking into building a smaller gaming pc for my friend. Currently the best prices seem to be at microcenter. I'm looking at a intel 10600k and the only mini itx board seems to be the Asrock H570M-ITX. This board has TWO m.2 slots...one Hyper M.2 Gen4x4 and one Ultra M.2 Gen3x4. Now 10th gen doesn't support Gen 4 so my question is is that Hyper M.2 slot pretty much useless or can I put a Gen3x4 ssd in there? Years ago I had this issue with a Asrock z490 extreme 4 board where the M.2 port was pretty much useless without a 11th gen CPU. Has things changed or is that m.2 port pretty much useless without an 11th gen? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Jul 2021 06:47 AM PDT I have been deciding between i9 10850k or i7 11700k. I'm going to be playing Fortnite (cpu heavy I believe) streaming, discord, watching twitch. Nothing to crazy. I'm more worried about streaming and gaming on one monitor while doing whatever on a another. Which one will give me the best performance for gaming & streaming? (Both are same price) Edit: I'll be using a 3070 and a 240hz 1080p monitor [link] [comments]

Help Finishing PCPartPicker Build Posted: 19 Jul 2021 02:41 PM PDT Hello, I am in the process of helping a friend build a pc and wanted some outside advice on the parts list. He already has the motherboard purchased and a 4k monitor he would like to use. Located in the U.S. and wanted to spend around $2500 on the full build. Feel free to rate the build or recommend some changes if there is something better available! Any headphones, mic or headset recommendations are appreciated. Bought an SSD and planning to put it on my PC Posted: 19 Jul 2021 02:35 PM PDT I have a desktop using normal HDD and want to put all my programs and operating system on the SSD. I dont want to make a clean install for the windows and all the programms again. Because it will take quiet the time. Is clonning that bad or is there any other options.
