    Simple Questions - July 18, 2021

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 05:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    Spilled soda inside my pc

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 12:44 PM PDT

So last night I accidentally spilled some soda inside my pc I immediately unplugged it and tipped it upside down. A good amount of soda came out, later that night I tried turning it back on but it made a weird noise so I unplugged it for the night. This morning I turned my pc on and it game me this error code saying I need to replace my hard drive. I restarted my pc and it's now working fine, should I be concerned?

Asus TUF RTX3080 GPU heating issues while gaming

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 03:29 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

as mentioned in the title, I'm having some overheating issues on my GPU. When idle GPU temps are around 35-40 degrees but when gaming those averages run up to 88 degrees with a maximum of 92degrees today while only playing Prey 2017.

To me this seems way too much definitely after reading other people's temps with maximums of about 70-75degrees. The case that I'm using is an Antec DP501, which I found out isn't ideal for airflow but even then those temps seem way too high. Also the big difference between idle and gaming in temps seems a lot to me. Does this sound like a faulty card to you or might there be some other reason for this? Any help and tips are greatly appreciated!

Transitioning my Prebuilt to a New Case

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 12:58 PM PDT

My apologies for the lengthy post that will follow - I just want to ensure that I include as much detail as possible.

Roughly 2 years ago I purchased a Predator PO3-600 prebuilt with a 1660TI and a i5-9400F. I've been happy with the GPU but I find the CPU often runs hot and the case / layout of the case is just terrible. I purchased a new psu and cpu cooler and in order to instal them it looks like it's going to be a ton of work (just because of the space in the case). I want to transition my prebuilt into a new case and I believe I'll need a new mobo. The goal with this transition is to have the unit as future proofed as possible so that someday I can just drop a 3060-3070 into it. I haven't been too happy with the performance on the i5-9400f either, would it make sense to buy a new mobo that fits the i5-9400f or should I buy a completely new cpu and mobo in order to future proof the build? I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestion on what to do with the mobo / cpu or if they have any suggestions on a new one that I should get? This will be the first time that I "build" a pc, is there anything I should be aware of? Will there be any compatibility issues? If I change out my mobo and cpu will I lose any data that I have or windows? I'm not too concerned about budget I just want something that I can future proof and put a new gpu into when the prices drop.

Low fps on a GTX 1650

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 12:30 PM PDT

So I recently got a PC from a friend and decided to test some games on it.

CPU: i5-9400f GPU: GTX 1650 RAM: 16 GBs

With this alone, I was expecting it to at least hit 60 fps or more on overwatch but I can barely hit 25 fps.

Put my PC on hibernate, returned later and it won't turn on

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 11:23 AM PDT

    Hi everyone

I was on my first build PC like normal a few hours ago, with no issues over the last 11 months since I built it. I went out for 2 hours today and put the computer on hibernate like usual. I come back and try to turn it on... nothing happens. When my computer is off or hibernating but connected to power, the built in power button on my motherboard usually stays lit with red, but not a single light is on anywhere on the computer. Am I right in that this is possibly a PSU failure?

Here's what I've tried so far, all in relation to the PSU:

    • Tried moving the PSU mains cable to a different plug on the same extension lead (monitor, speakers etc all still work on this lead), tried a different extension lead (same as previous), and plugged it directly into the wall socket.
    • Unplugged and replugged the mains cable to the PSU.
    • Flipping the switch on the PSU on and off again.
    • Unplugged and replugged all cables that connects the CPU, GPU and motherboard to the PSU.

Here's my parts if this is info required: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/hwyikl/first_build_complete_ryzen_3800x_geforce_2070/

Nothing has worked in getting the PC back on with the above steps I've taken. I'd appreciate this amazing community's assistance once again! This is the first problem I've come across as a first time PC builder so apologies if there is anything obvious I've missed. Thanks for any help or advice in advance.

Edit: I've just paperclip tested my PSU and the fans spin indicating it's working. What could be the problem if not the PSU?

I can't do 144hz even thoa my monitor support that help?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 12:31 AM PDT

So I have a dell 2716dg and a 1650 oc gpu and I run my monitor on 2560 1440 and my monitor does 144hz but when I try to change it to 144hz it doesn't pop up only 60hz so is that because I have a low gpu or something else?

Update: Thank you everyone for your help I got everything working. I'm completely new to PC so I really don't know a lot and I specially didn't know about the display port cable thing so I'm glad I know that now. Reason why I posted here is because I found out on Google that my uncle monitor that he left did do 144hz and I was trying to figure out how and why it wouldn't give me 144hz. Sadly I went and had already spend money on a new 4k HDMI cable but to come and find out from you guys that the display port cable I think that what it is called help you bring out your full hz. It wasn't working at first I thought the cable was no good because it hasn't been use ever since 2019, but then you guys told me to restart my PC. Then plug in the display port cable and it should work well it did and now I get 144hz. Thank you again everyone for your help 😊

Just finished my build, everything seems to be working other than outgoing audio. Any suggestions?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 03:28 PM PDT

I've already tried using two different sets of headphones/mics that both work on my xbox. I've also tried connecting my headphones directly to the case instead of connecting it through my controller which is connected to my case. No matter what I do, it gives robotic audio to the person I'm talking to. Case is Corsair 5000x, and here's the rest of my specs: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8V2kMv

    GPU Preventing PC from starting

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 03:26 PM PDT

Hope I'm describing this well enough, but basically I went to go have some lunch and left a game running on my pc while I went to go eat. When I came back, my pc had gone to sleep but was also frozen (wasn't responding to any type of inputs, Num Lock/Scroll Lock/Caps Lock weren't lighting up on my keyboard either) so I just shut my PC off and gave it a minute until I tried to reboot. Everytime I hit the power switch, everything would turn on for 1 second before shutting off again.

After lots of testing/swapping parts out, I isolated the GPU (5-6 year old GTX 970). I tested out the GPU on other PCs and it wouldn't boot up as well. It seems like the GPU is obviously kinda fried but I'm not sure exactly what happened to it or if there's any way to check my PC's logs for any errors to try and see if I can salvage it? I had my old 750TI that I can use until I fix this or get a new GPU but if there's a way to save my 970, I would like to try to.

    Specs if needed:
    CPU : i5-4590
GPU: GTX 970 (not working) --- GTX 750TI (current temp card)
    RAM: 16gb

Does this prebuilt need an exhaust fan above the GPU?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 02:57 PM PDT

I am building the following PC linked below, it has 6 120mm fans (I am unsure on which panel is the intake and which panel is the exhaust). The GPU is a Gigabyte RTX 3070 Vision 8GB, paired with a AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8 Core 4.7Ghz CPU.

My question is : Do I need to fit an exhaust fan above the graphics card?

    Thank you.

What to do about memory test error?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 12:51 PM PDT

Built my own PC about 3 years ago. i7-8700k, 1080ti, 16gb RAM G-Skill. I've been noticing that my computer gets the BSOD once or twice a week for a few months now, with a memory management error. It hasn't happened during a critical event yet, but I decided to run a Windows Memory Diagnostic test. Upon finishing the test and restarting the computer, I get notified that there is an error and to contact my computer manufacturer. Is the best move right now to contact G-skill, or am I misunderstanding the error? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

When I went into the Event Viewer to get the MemoryDiagnostics-Results, here's what it says:

Lights and fans turn on but no display. White VGA LED won’t turn off.

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 03:42 PM PDT

Hi all, been using this computer to mine eth but last night it crashed while I wasn't home. I came back and tried to reboot the system but couldn't get any display and then noticed the white VGA led on. Looked into this and it seems to be some issue with my gpu or igpu. I tried taking out my gpu and booting up but still same issue, also the fans and everything on the gpu seem fine. This would lead me to believe it's the CPU's igpu but I tried reseating the cpu but still get the solid white led when I try to boot. Very very frustrated at this point, any help would be much appreciated.

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 03:38 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

My friend was interested in getting her own custom rig, but as we all know the GPU market is terrible right now so instead I offered to sell her my old stuff. Down below are the specs. I was wondering how much would these parts bought in ~2017 should go for in current day? Location is USA.

Storage: 2 no name HDDs (Not planning to charge for this)

Misc.: Razer Naga, 2x 140mm Noctua fans

    Total in 2017: ~$1743

    Thanks in advance!

    PSU Failing on Upgraded GPU?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 03:27 PM PDT

Just bought a 3070 Ti, my first new PC part since like 2016. I'm not that knowledgeable with PC building, so I wanted to confirm the behavior I'm seeing when I try to boot with you fine folks.

With the new GPU installed, I can boot and get display output for a few minutes, but after a little while the display cuts out and I get a No Signal message. The PC is still powered on, and the lights are on the GPU, but the fans aren't spinning. I've tried different cables, different monitors, and re-seating everything. When I put back in my old 980, there are no issues with the display output.

My hunch is that my PSU might be inadequate (its a 650 W from 2016), but wanted to check if there may be something else wrong or other troubleshooting steps I should try before I order an upgrade. Parts list below, thank you!

    • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170MX Micro ATX
    • CPU: Intel i7-6700
    • GPU: EVGA Geforge RTX 3070 Ti
    • RAM: 2x8 Kingston HyperX Fury
    • PSU: EVGA G1 650 W 80+

What's are some pc parts you would highly recommend to anyone?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 03:16 PM PDT

Have you ever had a pc part you liked so much that you would recommend to anyone? Maybe it's made of such high quality material, has great customer support, or functions like a dream.

It could be any pc part, like a PSU, ram, cpu cooler, computer case, etc.

If im gonna be transfering files a lot do i want SSD or HDD?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 11:19 AM PDT

I wanna mod games and im awful at it so it would be a lot copying and pasting the game and its files (like 80+gb) around.

Which one is better for this? I know SSD is faster but i also heard it degrades faster too but im not too sure. Should i go with a HDD and just deal with the slowness?

Cheapest graphics card for 1080p 60fps valorant

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 02:47 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm thinking of building a pc for multitasking with work and for playing valorant at 1080p low - I was just wondering what's the cheapest graphics card available right now for about £65 (i.e new or second hand) where I could play valorant at 1080p 60fps

I'm thinking of getting 2x 8gb ram and the processor I'm thinking of buying is Ryzen 5 1600.

I had zero knowledge in PC building an hour ago...

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 02:29 PM PDT

... So I consulted the ever-helpful Uncle Google to help me understand the basics I need to know.

And this is what I came up with:

    • Intel Core i7 10700F
    • MSI Z490-A Pro
    • HyperX Fury 16GB DDR4 3200
    • Asus Phoenix GTX 1650 4GB DDR6
    • Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD
    • Kingston 240GB SSD
    • Gigabyte PSU 650W

Please let me know if it's any good cus I'm on a budget lol, and take it easy on me!

    Thanks in advance! ( ͡° ͜Ê– ͡°)

Torn apart between: ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2060 A6G EVO, TUF RTX 3060 O12G, and Zotac RTX 3060 Twin Edge II OC. And also have a faulty GPU.

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 02:24 PM PDT

Gaming at 1360x768 atm (will purchase an HDMI to VGA convertor) but will purchase a full HD monitor at some point (1920x1080, 60 Hz)

Not for mining. Not for Warzone either. I just want to play things like Fallout New Vegas with mods, Stalker Anomaly, XCOM 2, and the upcoming Stalker 2 with zero hassle. I work with Photoshop, Wordpress, Aftereffect, and do a lot of video rendering at 1080p at most.

I can purchase either soon, and I love how both of the cards look. STRIX 2060's LED lights are legit fire, + the price, but then there's TUF's full Aluminium fan shroud. 3 Fan cards have a special place in my heart. But then there's the Zotac card. Compact, stylish, sexy design lol and that's where the dilemma comes from. I just can't decide which one. I'm more leaning towards 3060s, but the STRIX 2060 is also beautiful. AMD cards here are overpriced af for some reason.

    ------------------------------------------- QUESTION ABOUT OLD -----

My old GPU, a Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 1GB, has been malfunctioning. I'll tell you what problem it has, maybe someone can help me find what's wrong with the poor thing. I bought a 650 Watt PSU, but turns out it only delivers 348 Watts to +12V rail which means to my CPU and GPU's eyes, it's a 350 Watts PSU.

The GPU was working properly for a year or so, but then it started giving me flickers (it's like the candle flame when you blow on it) in certain games and certain scenarios. It then turned into black screens. As long as the PC is in idle mode, everything is fine, but the moment I go into a game, black screen every 5 seconds for 10-20 seconds, or until I close all gpu processed apps.

The card is old af itself, and the new PSU is the second PSU. The old PSU, which died, was legit. The thing is, it might be due to insufficient power feed. If I don't work with the PC for too long, and return, I can play something like Dota 2 for an hour before all the artifactings come back again.

The question is, is the damage permanent? Or it'll go away with a legit PSU (like Coolermaster WME 650 Watt white)

did I mess up buying Ryzen 5000?

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 02:16 PM PDT

I built my first ever pc not too long ago with a b550 motherboard and a Ryzen 5 5600X CPU, I've been super happy with the performance so far, but I heard that AM5 is coming soon with the new CPU's which means the upgrade path for the b550 board is essentially nonexistent for ryzen since there won't be anymore AM4 CPUs...

so did i screw up buying ryzen 5000 series? should I have waited for AM5 or am I safe with AM4 for at least a few years until I can get my money up to afford new CPUs and upgrades?

Rate My Setup and Suggest Improvements

    Posted: 18 Jul 2021 10:24 AM PDT

This is my first time trying to build a PC and I wanted to come to this community of experts to get your opinion on what your thoughts are on my build, what challenges and tips you might recommend once I actually put it together (I have some of the parts, some are in the mail) and also any recommendations for anything else I can purchase to improve the overall experience.

I want this PC primarily for productivity/work use, streaming netflix and sports, some light gaming, and I also want to passively try mining cryptocurrency and may hope to expand with another GPU in the future to increase the amount of profitability I can generate from this build.

This is what I have so far:

Motherboard - ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-Plus Wifi microATX

GPU - NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3060

    CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 6-Core 12 Thread 3.8 Ghz

PSU - Corsair RM650 650W 80 Plus Gold Full Modular PSU

    Memory - 8GB G.SKILL Aegis 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM

    Storage - Kingston A2000 1TB SSD

Case - still to be purchased (any recommendations?)

CPU Cooling - still to be purchased, I'm looking for an affordable liquid cooling unit.

All is compatible when I put it into pcpartpicker website.

That's it! I also have a mechanical keyboard, mouse and monitor ready for the build. Do you think I a missing anything though and are there any small purchases I can make to improve the performance, longevity or overall efficiency of my PC? Considering I am a noob to all of this (only started doing some research about two weeks ago), any and all tips would be very appreciated.

As for the build itself, I'm hoping to figure it out myself through putting in a solid day's work. Am I in over my head or should this be fine?
