How can I convince my parents to let me build a PC? Posted: 13 Jul 2021 06:38 PM PDT EDIT: Thank you for all the replies and the awards, y'all have been really helpful and I'll see what I can do with the info you've given me! I wanted to build a PC (~1000$CAD) and asked my parents about it, they said they won't let me buy it with my own money [either] because it would be a waste. Their points: If something doesn't work no one will accept it as their products fault If you buy prebuilt you get it from one guy instead of multiple You're overpaying for something you could get less (prebuilt) If you need a computer for, computer, then we'll get you a prebuilt. If you want to tinker 1k (CAD not USD) is too much If it doesn't work you (or us) just lost 1k. My points were mainly of quality and value from a personally assembled vs a prebuilt. Edit: might not immediately be able to respond (internet issues) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Jul 2021 11:04 AM PDT So I'm building a new PC with a dark hero mb, 5900x, and been looking into RAM quite a bit. From what I've gathered, I need 3600Mhz and CL14 (Trident Z neo/royal). Can I get 2x16gb sticks and then get another 2x16 of the same ones after a month/two? Is 4x16 better than 2x32? Any help is appreciated, thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Jul 2021 02:43 PM PDT I dont need anything too fancy. Just like a medium-range all-rounder for a bit of gaming and a bit of work. I play some games but currently have to have all of the graphic settings on minimum and still get low 20fps. It would be nice to be able to have 60fps and tun the graphics settings up. Ive got this so far and i would be really graterful for any comments: [PCPartPicker Part List](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/3CtHHz) Type|Item|Price :----|:----|:---- **CPU** | [AMD Ryzen 7 3800X 3.9 GHz 8-Core Processor](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/qryV3C/amd-ryzen-7-3800x-39-ghz-8-core-processor-100-100000025box) | £259.99 @ Amazon UK **Motherboard** | [Asus ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/vFhmP6/asus-rog-strix-b550-f-gaming-wi-fi-atx-am4-motherboard-rog-strix-b550-f-gaming-wi-fi) | £169.59 @ Amazon UK **Memory** | [Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/p6RFf7/corsair-memory-cmk16gx4m2b3200c16) | £79.98 @ Scan.co.uk **Storage** | [Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/Zxw7YJ/samsung-970-evo-plus-1-tb-m2-2280-nvme-solid-state-drive-mz-v7s1t0bam) | £130.63 @ Amazon UK **Storage** | [\*Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/Zxw7YJ/samsung-970-evo-plus-1-tb-m2-2280-nvme-solid-state-drive-mz-v7s1t0bam) | £130.63 @ Amazon UK **Video Card** | [Asus GeForce GTX 1080 8 GB STRIX Video Card](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/vzfmP6/asus-video-card-strixgtx1080o8ggaming) |- **Power Supply** | [Corsair RM (2019) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply](https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/6Y66Mp/corsair-rm-2019-750-w-80-gold-certified-fully-modular-atx-power-supply-cp-9020195-na) | £79.99 @ Scan.co.uk | *Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts* | | **Total** | **£850.81** | \*Lowest price parts chosen from parametric criteria | | Generated by [PCPartPicker](https://pcpartpicker.com) 2021-07-14 22:36 BST+0100 | 1) Will this run? 2) Will it run most games at 60fps and decent graphics? Upgrading to R5 3600 for $100! Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:51 AM PDT https://imgur.com/gallery/gv85HEV Quick story time! My buddy knows little about PCs but I talked him into getting one last fall just before 3000 series released. He was always a console guy but now he admits he would never go back. He got a R5 3600, msi mpg x570 gaming edge wifi, team delta 3200 2x8 memory, gigabyte 2080 super, WD 1TB NVme, and an nzxt gold PSU in the h510i black red case. He plays warzone and wanted to upgrade to a 5000 series to get better frames at 144hz 1080 so he impulse bought a 5800x. He asked for my help installing it (as he honestly didn't even know what the cpu looked like or how small it was) and in exchange he would sell me him 3600 for $100! I would've helped him anyways but this was just icing on the cake. I have a 2600x in my system so I was happy to upgrade while also helping a friend! I know, not the most exciting story, but I had to share with someone and no better place than to share here. The install went great for his system which was built through the nzxt BLD I just had a little trouble with his cpu cooler, the pure rock slim. Man that thing sucks lol. I told him his next upgrade should be getting a 240 aio but that's another discussion 😂 [link] [comments] |
For 6 months I thought my EVGA 3070 XC3 Ultra is loud as hell, only to realize it wasn't the GPU... Posted: 14 Jul 2021 06:00 AM PDT TL;DR at the end. Let's start by saying I thought I'm competent in PC building. I've easily built more than a 100 of them, although only a small percent of them was high performance desktop PCs for friends, family and myself, most of them was simple office PCs. I've got my hands on an EVGA 3070 XC3 Ultra in January, and I was really disappointed with it's performance noise and temperature wise. Upgrading from the MSI 1080 Gaming X Trio which was very quiet even under heavy load, the only part I changed was the GPU and suddenly the PC got extremely loud. The case was a Fractal Design Define Mini C as I really like silent and relatively small computers. After fiddling with the fan curves, installing the latest bios on the card and trying slight undervolting, I accepted that this 3000 series is just really power hungry and the heat has to go somewhere. This case just won't do. So I researched a bit and decided to pull the trigger on a Phanteks Eclipse P400A, one of the coolest case according to gamersnexus' testing. I slapped three Noctua NF-S12A fans in for good measure, and you can imagine my surprise when this really didn't help much. The temps were much better, but still very loud under load. There was one very obvious sign that I missed. The noise didn't really align with the reported GPU fan RPMs, as it was getting louder without the RPMs increasing too much. I thought the card just has a funky way of reporting the RPM or something. I applied heavy undervolting with Afterburner, and found a point where I only lost like 10% performance, but the thing was relatively quiet. At least I now know that there is a lot of safety margin in the stock voltage curve, and you can aggressively undervolt them and keep stability, only lose a couple of frames and heavily lower the power consumption and temps. This worked for a couple of months, but summer came and suddenly it started to get really loud again under load. I was really disappointed in EVGA even though I've talked to a friend who had the same model and it was quiet for him. At this point there were reviews about the MSI 3070 Gaming X Trio and it looked like it's the coolest and most silent 3070 model, so I started to hunt. I found a new 3070 Ti LHR for a price lower than my card, so I quickly sold mine (a miner bought it in an hour) and ordered this card (also made $200 by switching). It arrived and... it was worse! For a couple of minutes it was quiet, at around 1250 RPM and 62-63 Celsius, but then it started to get really loud again... but the RPM was only around 1300?! I thought maybe one of the fans are defective? So I laid down next to the pc to investigate... The noise localized to the bottom of the case... Yeah, the side panel probably relocates it that's why I hear it from there, I thought... At this point I was still oblivious to the real issue. I take off the side panel... and the noise is still coming from the bottom... At this point I start to realize... I touch the three fans of the GPU, they come to a full stop... and the noise is still there... It's not coming from the GPU. It's the PSU. My Seasonic M12II Evo 620W was struggling to provide enough power to these beasts (to be fair it managed to do it), and tried not to overheat... The poor thing. I remembered as it's 650W, and while I knew MSI recommended a 750W PSU, I've read some review where they measured and concluded that 650W would suffice. I also did not have stability problems and would have guessed that's the first sign that my PSU is underpowered. I felt so stupid, I bought a new case, and a new GPU because it didn't click that the PSU could be overheating, even though there were signs (RPMs not being too high and not correlating with the noise for one). Learn from my mistake. I did some digging and ordered a Seasonic Focus PX 850W, I'm pretty sure this will suffice. TL;DR I thought my GPU is loud, so I bought a new case, new fans and even a new GPU, only to realize it was the PSU all along. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Jul 2021 01:28 PM PDT I've made a huge mistake by not checking the psu's cabble endslots The current setup: Msi mpg z390 gaming plus With gigabyte gtx 1060 3 gb wind force 2x8gb kingstone hyperx 2666mhz ram Intel i7-9700kf Cooler master elite v3 600w The problem : the psu's cabble doesnt support my gpu Can you guys reccommend a budget psu OR a good gpu for this setup? Reboot and select proper boot device Posted: 14 Jul 2021 02:48 PM PDT I have just finished building my Pc, and when I plugged it into my screen, all the computer will do is say "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" I can't access BIOS, as when I press f5 (or any other key) all I get is the same message. How do I fix this? My motherboard is a msi b365, my hard drive is a Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive [link] [comments] |
Turn off mouse acceleration, please! Posted: 14 Jul 2021 02:22 AM PDT Firstly please note this post is mainly relevant to people that use their computers for gaming, but could be interesting to others. Also I apologize if this post is deemed irrelevant to this sub however I felt that it would be appreciated here. Yeah I know, this is a pretty well known fact. However, somehow for the past 6 years since I got my first gaming computer, I have not known about mouse acceleration. I have watched excessive amounts of computer building related content, as well as gaming youtubers, and more and not once have I ever heard anyone talk about mouse acceleration. Maybe I am the one guy on planet earth that doesn't know that you need to turn mouse acceleration off for FPS (and other) games. A friend was using my setup a few weeks back and he picked up on it immediately and turned it off. Since then, my aim and overall efficiency in all games has greatly improved. I can't believe I've been battling with mouse acceleration for so long. Hopefully no one else is as silly as me but if you were, at least you know now. [link] [comments] |
any AMD Users experiencing FPS Drops in Performance Mode? Posted: 14 Jul 2021 12:29 PM PDT hi. got a question to the active Fortnite players who use performance mode with AMD GPU, do you also have massive FPS drops but only in performance mode? E.g. when jumping out of the bus, when landing in a city down to 60 FPS but no problems on DirectX12? For a few months now, I have had the problem that I have the above-mentioned problems in performance mode. Would like to continue playing Performance Mode as it has a few playful advantages. How different does 1440p, and 2160p look while gaming? Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:17 AM PDT Okay, so I made a reddit to ask this question so I can know what I'm doing for a PC. So, how different does the two resolutions look when gaming? Is it massive, or barely noticeable. I'm a visuals gamer so I'm trying to figure out the answer to this question because building a 2160p machine is a lot more expensive than 1440p. I don't mind, but if the difference aren't too jarring when I play on ultra settings (disregarding FPS) I'll just get a 1440p screen. Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this question. I would check for myself but I don't necessarily have anything below 4k screen wise in my home besides my phone, and 1080 laptop. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Jul 2021 06:53 AM PDT I found a summer sale where i can get a brand new one for 250€ (tax included). Should i buy it, or look for another monitor [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Jul 2021 12:33 PM PDT hi my mans, I've built my pc but the fans do be loud, so I'm replacing the stock intakes soon and the rear exhaust which is 3pin will be replaced as well - but the stock wraith prism needs a worthy replacement, one of neat-ness and not completely ugly (sorry noctua). at idle im looking 36C on my 3700x in a H710 (the hot box), which is great apart from the noise, a noise so persistent that even 4-5 metres away or in the hallway next to the room you can hear the hum and buzz so basically anyone got a suggestion for a top mounted 360mm radiator on an am4 socket (x570-f) that looks aight and performs better than my god tier wraith prism with the cool looking spinny fan that's equivalent to a high-bypass turbofan thanks my mans [link] [comments] |
Parts not working after upgrade. Can anyone help? Posted: 14 Jul 2021 04:08 PM PDT I was recently lucky enough to aquire a 3080 Ti GPU, and after installation I turned it on only to see the no signal prompt on my monitor. I thought "Okay, there's an LED next to each of the 8 pin ports and one isn't on. Maybe it doesn't have enough power or it's a bad cable." So I went and bought a new corsair RM1000x PSU, swapped all the cables, and tried again. This time, two lights weren't on and my NZXT Kraken Z63 CPU cooler's screen wouldn't light up. I'm afraid of causing damage to my mostly new build. Build list: Mother Board - Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 3700x 8 core CPU Cooler - NZXT Kraken Z63 RAM - G. Skill Trident Z Neo (2x16GB) GPU - Gigabyte Aorus RTX 3080 Ti PSU - Corsair RM1000x Drives - WD Black 3TB & Samsung 850 Evo 250GB [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Jul 2021 01:46 PM PDT I just bought a new motherboard because my current one doesn't have usb-c and I need it for a certain thing, is there any problems when you switch motherboards or anything I should know before? I've never done this and I'm trying to be cautious so I don't mess anything up. [link] [comments] |

Msi Afterburner FPS counter help Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:48 PM PDT I've got the on screen display working fine but it's giving me one decimal place after my frame rate so instead of 89 FPS it's 89.1 FPS and it's rather annoying. Any idea how to change? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:46 PM PDT I have a B450m Pro4 and I want to update my bios since I just got a 5600x. My question is do I have to update to the latest bios version which is 5.20 or do I just need to update to the version 4.60 which supports 5600 series cpu? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:42 PM PDT I am looking to spec a new machine for work, I am a software dev and working on fairly chunky apps so CPU/RAM/Write Speeds are important to me. I havent actually build a PC in a long time (I think it was Socket 7 on my last one) so specing one using overclockers for now. Wondered if anything jumps out as weird or out of place on this spec [link] [comments] |

Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:28 PM PDT Hi need help comparing these two wifi cards. Download speed for me will be <200Mbps, so not sure even if the AX200 is better if it will be noticeable. Thanks! Even though the AX200 is cheaper, I already have the T6E on-hand. [link] [comments] |
Debating on getting a laptop vs building a pc Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:23 PM PDT As you all know, building a pc in this current market is pretty expensive unless the luck of the draw is truly on your side. With that being said, I am trying to decide on whether to get the new Asus Flow x13 with the 3050ti and the XG Mobile dock or just building an almost equally priced desktop. I'm a photographer and a programming student so a laptop does benefit my current workload a bit more but I've been wanting to build a pc since like 6th grade and also want the upgradability and better performance. Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:08 PM PDT I can't find any reviews for the gaming x trio 3070 ti anywhere.... All of the professional reviews seem to be 3070 for gaming x trio or suprim x for 3070ti. I only care about noise levels in this. I have a sealed tuf 3070, which is known to have great noise levels and cool temps. 3070 Gaming x trio is also known for great temps and noise levels. Generally, the ti cards are warmer and louder, so that is what worries me about the msi. The suprim x 3070 ti is very quiet, however. But just can't find anything where the same person compares 3070 and 3070 ti for noise levels... Since I was able to get 10% off of the msi 3070 ti, as long as it's not hugely louder, I'd be tempted to keep that instead of the asus. I'd break even in price basically. Would have to have LHR and only slight gains in performance, so I dunno. Just kind of hate to let the msi go, though, and reselling is a waste really on any 3070 ti. If only I had been able to get the strix 3080... They barely had it in stock before it was gone. Could have gotten that for $999 due to my coupon. [link] [comments] |
2nd Hard drive dose not want to be recognized by PC anymore. Posted: 14 Jul 2021 02:39 PM PDT As the title says it; my second hard drive dose not want to work? To In short summary: I was coming home from work, tuned on my pc then, tried to open valorant (which is located in that hard drive) and it just said "The item shortcut that this item refers has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly" confused at first I opened task manager, and it was not there. Okay | said what about disk management... it was not located there as well, nor was it in the device management. I have looked up many solutions to this problem and I can for my life not fix it. What have I done to fix it? I have tried to...
// - I have tried to reset and delete some drivers to see if it that was the culprit and I might have found the cause of this. The Serial ATA controller dose not want its driver to be updated. When device management is open, I can see that the ATA controller driver can be updated, when tried to update it it says: "windows have encountered an a problem installing drivers for your device... windows found drivers for your device but encountered an error while attempting to Install them.". Dose anyone have any idea why or if this is the problem to the HDD not being recognized? If so, what else can I try? Some background info; many problems started happening when I downloaded a "driver updater" around 5 months ago, software, I am not sure if it was "driver booster" or "Driverhub" Now before anyone bashes me for being dumb and downloading these softwares, you're too late, I was the first one to bash my self. My pc spec are as follows:
Another thing I want to point out is that the BIOS dose not recognize it as well, but when I swapped the mobo, it did recognized it, it recognized 2 different storage devices. I have had this pc for 2 years now but problems arose when the driver software thing was downloaded a few months ago. Old hard drive works in another older pc, shows it still have Juice left. Again any help would be appreciated, sorry for the essay typed problem, and thank you in advance. I just need and want to fix this before school starts again. [link] [comments] |
Need advice on what parts to choose for my first build Posted: 14 Jul 2021 10:52 AM PDT Alright so I know next to nothing about pcs only the basics. I have a budget of about 1100€ for a pc that will mostly be used for VR gaming such as Beat Saber and VRChat. I would like it to run other games smoothly at 1080p 60 fps at least. The problem with the current gpu prices is troubling but I am willing to wait a while for the prices to drop so keep that in mind. Also the motherboard has to have wifi. Is a build like this possible with my current budget? any help is appreciated :) (responses might be a bit slow and like I said I know next to nothing about pcs so please be patient with me) [link] [comments] |
