Posted: 11 Jul 2021 05:35 AM PDT I am not familiar with malware, trojans or similar threats on Linux. Can you illuminate me? I only know that, since most things are open-source, there is always the potential to download a program that has some malicious script added to it if the source of the software is not 100% legit, since anybody can alter the code, and 90% (99%?) of people don't bother checking it. Should I consider getting an antivirus? would it even do anything on Linux? I just want to make sure I am being careful, and don't get too caught up in the fact that the FOSS community is so awesome and I start trusting everyone just because we generally help each other all the time. Official LibreOffice Calc Survey. Please help us Improve LibreOffice Calc Posted: 11 Jul 2021 06:51 AM PDT The Design Team of LibreOffice, a free, open-source office productivity software suite, is conducting a survey to learn more about the users of LibreOffice Calc and to understand where the team should focus the efforts to improve the software. The survey consists of questions related to your usage of Calc and its features. It also contains the System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire, which we will use to evaluate the usability of Calc. You can access the survey by using the following link: https://survey.documentfoundation.org/773422?lang=en This is an official post on our blog, advertising the survey: https://design.blog.documentfoundation.org/2021/07/09/help-us-to-improve-libreoffice-calc-by-completing-our-survey/ Thank you for you help. Whats the deal with all the distros out there? Posted: 11 Jul 2021 01:43 PM PDT I just dumped my W7 and decided to go W10AME + Linux. I tried a couple distros (Pop OK, Ubuntu, Tails and Plasma) and so far I don't understand whats the deal with the noise about them. ??? They all work in the same way, have a similar structure and interface "language" come with basically the same software variations, and other than maybe the color palettes and some effects are just the same. Are there any fundamental difference among them (or the rest) that I should take into account while selecting the one I would use? (besides the look, and the usage (i'll be using Tails as a standalone system for my alt's)) [link] [comments] |

Posted: 11 Jul 2021 04:05 PM PDT I'm a music producer, ergo I need to use the linux-rt kernel. I downloaded it from the Arch realtime repository (I'm on Endeavour OS), ran sudo update-grub, and rebooted my computer. It shows up in Grub, and I select it. Then, it just takes me to a never ending blinking underscore. Damn. I reboot, and select the regular kernel, and it works. Does anyone know why another kernel wouldn't work out of the box? This is an Endeavour I just installed yesterday. Thanks for any info! [link] [comments] |
Starting to customize My Arch install Posted: 11 Jul 2021 03:41 PM PDT So recently I wanted to get into Linux and decided to download Arch after watching plenty of "pick your distro" videos and the installation and setup experience was quite fun. I learned most of the usual console commands and and how to work my way around the OS. Watched a couple of videos and looked into r/unixporn and decided to spice KDE up to my liking. But shortly after starting my journey I hit a brick wall; I have no idea how to rice up my KDE Plasma at all. If it means anything I'm really comfortable using the PC and coding (C, C++ and Java) is something that I'm good at... [link] [comments] |

Appear to be unable to install programs? Posted: 11 Jul 2021 07:34 AM PDT I consider myself quite technically minded, but for 3 days now I've been hitting complete brick walls. Long story short, I've no access to a desktop computer and am just trying to run a jar file on my android phone. After a lot of trying (I do not want to root it), I eventually found that Linux supports Java and can be run side by side with my phone's OS (which doesn't really make sense to me, since it doesn't have root access, but never mind). So here we are. I have an app called UserLAnd (sic), from which I have downloaded Ubuntu, xfce and Firefox, plus a viewer to run Linux in. I then used Firefox to get to the Java download site (https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/javase/javase-jdk8-downloads.html), but attempting to run any of these downloaded programs simply asks what I want to use to open it; there doesn't appear to be any package installer within the programs list. Attempting to use sudo dpkg -I /home/username/Downloads/filename either returns "filepath is not a debian archive" or "package architecture (amd64) does not match system architecture (arm64)." I can't find an option for arm64, although I have read that it's the same as aarch64 but the file matching that returns the package architecture message. Any tips? A particular file type I'm looking for? A link to where I can download a JRE/JVM/JDK/generic java software? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
What do I need to know when installing without a DE? Posted: 11 Jul 2021 01:15 PM PDT I've been running Linux Mint with Cinnamon on my Laptop for quite some time now. I now want to give installing a new distro without a DE a try. My main concern is, what are the things I need to take care of? Of course I'll need to pick a WM and file manager, but I guess there are less obvious things things I need like programs for power-management, media/brightness control, auto-mounting drives, etc. and stuff like drivers, which I don't know too much about yet. to be honest. My point is that there are probably quite a few things I use right now, that I'm not even conscious off, since they just came with the DE. So is there some comprehensive list of stuff I may want/need to get on a clean install? [link] [comments] |

How can I become a Senior Linux support administrator? Posted: 11 Jul 2021 11:23 AM PDT Hi, I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I'll ask anyway. So, a bit of a back story. I'm a college student looking for a better paying job. That's why I want to work in the field of IT. I haven't had any previous experience in this industry and because of that I had no idea what career exactly I want to persue so I thought I'd just start browsing for vacancy positions, fancy one and then start teaching myself the things necessary for that position. That's how I came across a job advertisement for senior linux support administrator. I don't know why but the moment I saw it I was like that's it. It wasn't because of the salary ( I've seen much better paying jobs) but because of some inner feeling. The problem is I know absolutely nothing about Linux or system administration. The job summary and requirements are the following : JOB SUMMARYWe are looking for a capable system administrator with deep knowledge of Linux and a fascination with infrastructure:
JOB REQUIREMENTS
NICE TO HAVE
Now to my actual question. How can I teach myself all of this since I have no knowledge of Linux or programming? Basically I have to start from the bottom. So, do you guys know any books or other sources that could be useful? Any advice would be extremely helpful. Thank you in advance. ❤️ [link] [comments] |
Hello a somewhat knowledgeable pc user here: Q's for Win10 >> Arch ('ish) Posted: 11 Jul 2021 06:32 AM PDT So I am currently On Win10 and have been sick and tired of it for a while. -What I am planning on running Is ArcoLinux (edition L) with an XFCE environment and later either i3 or awsome -I have an Ryzen 7 3700x on a MSI MPG x570 gaming edge wifi, an rtx 3060 aorus-extrame, 16 gb 3200Mhz ram, one main nvme ssd of 1tb another of 500gb and two big harddrives of 4tb. So now some questions I have for Linux natives: -Will I be able to keep my data on nonmain drives like my harddisks unchanged if I just don't touch them. These are like my drives with Fotos and Videos on them not really any programs only data and my file structure. -Once more about the hard drives, If the answer to the first question is sth like: "Nah don't worry." -I will have to set up a VM for some of the games I play either way I believe unless Bungie, epic games etc get off their asses. So do some Linux gaming vets have vm managers and/or setup manuals that work flawlessly with arch distros, or sth to stay away from at all costs? -I have some idea of a good way of partitioning the main drive, but I would still appreciate a good practices partition guideline thing (explanation is that the right word nonnative en), and an explanation for why that is so. -Is there a password manager that is very reputable I wanna try one but I am a quiet anxious person and don't know which of the Linux ones I feel like trusting. Also, I just wanna say to anybody how answers any of my questions or comes up with extra things, I wanna thank you for your time in advance since I am sadly a little shit in expressing gratitude. Installing another distro in a second drive Posted: 11 Jul 2021 08:29 AM PDT Hello friends, I currently have manjaro installed on my main drive and windows 10 on my secondary. As I haven't touched the windows partition in some time I want to wipe it and start trying other distros. What is the correct way of doing this manually? If i take, for example, the Ubuntu installer and manually create another partition table with a root and a home partiton (I'm guessing there's no need for another EFI partition). How should I "tell" GRUB to add this second installation as an entry? Thank you for your help. [link] [comments] |
Troubleshooting some stuttering, anyone familiar with some of these errors in journalctl? Posted: 11 Jul 2021 11:19 AM PDT So I've been getting weird and intermittent lockups where the screen will go black for a second and then come right back. There's no real pattern to these lockups, sometimes it happens a couple times a day, some times one or two times a week. I was looking through
and got a slew of errors, and I'm not sure these are critical or not. Here's the latest journal log Anyone familiar with any of these errors, should I be concerned with them and could they potentially cause the lockups? [link] [comments] |
