Laptops Wow! SSD makes so much difference even in such old laptop! With HDD everything was very slow and HDD usage was on 100% with 17-22 second access time. Not a faulty HDD, Windows 7 and Linux ran just fine. I switched it for SSD and wow. Access time is now around 8ms and it feels fast.

PSA to those who have rubber/adhesive strips on the bottom of their laptop and can't put them back on after panel removal for upgrades or repair: put it in the freezer for 20 mins and quickly put it back on and apply pressure.

    Seen any Surprisingly-Great Displays recently??

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 01:00 PM PDT

I'm on the hunt for a new-to-me laptop in order to get a SUPERIOR display - preferably 15-17, so I'm posting in several r/'s to see what suggestions I can get, and so far people seem reluctant or stumped or "been there.... failed" in responses. Or aftermarket specs with no context.

Are all gaming laptop Displays among the leaders "great" by definition? I assume, but am not sure, the answer is ... NO. Because people have budgets and want the most speed [capable play... lets say] for the money. But I may be wrong... So please help me.

In my quest so far, if I read reviews carefully, and Q/A's re laptop display, it is discouraging because I see people saying that the mftr misrepresents the display specs or quality. On the other hand, high end gamers for whom money is not a problem perhaps are buying very high quality displays - I dunno. its a strange market and some things don't make sense at all.

Graphics AND text mean much, as I do a lot of reading online, of necessity

Thank you for any help - links and model numbers are so helpful also....

one more thing.... because of my line of work I have bought/sold a LOT on eBay and am very comfortable buying an older model if necessary, and/or DIY upgrading the panels. That aside, I also will be looking at Windows 11 compatibility at the end of the day

Preferably I'd like one with ssd and hdd but it's not essential. My price range is around £700. Please recommend laptops that would be good for me!

Is MacOS better than Windows for bureautics and heavy softwares like Unity, Photoshop and coding ?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 02:54 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I'm planning to buy a laptop for the first time, as I need to move out to a new city for my studies. I'm currently informing myself on what laptop I could buy with my 700-800 euros budget but I wondered if I should get a mac or a Windows PC...

I've always used Windows, I've got an Android phone and I never used MacOS. I know that MacOS is kinda the OS to choose when it comes to profesionnal work, but I was hoping that you could help me answering that question, and maybe give me some insights on the a laptop to choose :D

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      $1000

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Performance,battery,build quality

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I want something thinner, not like a typical gaming laptop because those are a little big

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    -15" max

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I want to play like 1 game, but I wouldn't prioritize it (aka get a laptop dedicated for gaming)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Minimum 64 but operating system, 8gb ram, 132fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Decent keyboard, USB port

I'd like a computer that I will be able to do research on and type up essays, but I possibly want to play a game on. I want to prioritize it for academic use

    ASUS TUF F15 RAM issue

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 02:29 PM PDT

I have an ASUS TUF F15 with 8GB of soldered 3200mhz ddr4, and I bought a 32gb stick of team group cl16 3200 memory, but for some reason they're both running at 2666mhz. Is there a way to enable XMP on this laptop?

Battery Capacity has gotten lower (Dell, Windows 10 Pro)

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 02:26 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I have an Inspiron 3780, Windows 10 Pro that has been in use for two years. A few days ago, I went to the Dell Support to run diagnostics to see if the laptop is okay. The results said my battery is "charging to only 63.52% of design capacity". So questions:

    1. Is there any way to increase the battery capacity again? I run Battery Saver whenever I can, keep the display brightness low, and only put in the adapter to charge when battery is at 20%. I'm just wondering if there are any other ways to keep the battery around.

    2. If I do need to acquire a new battery, should I purchase a warranty before I do so (the current one got expired)?

    3. Do I get the new battery directly from Dell? Do I pay a small price to just get the battery and install it from there? Any possible discounts? Are there third-party batteries that will work with this laptop?

Any answers are appreciated. Thanks for coming by.

    Looking for laptop suggestions

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 01:58 PM PDT

Hi I've been looking for a decent laptop for a while now but im kinda stumped. I'm looking for a laptop thats decent for both university and gaming. Ideally I'd like a laptop with decent storage, at least an i7 cpu, and above GTX660. However, I don't want a offensively GAMER looking laptop I want something decently powerful but casual looking. Price range is max 1500 CAD.

MSI Gt80 2qe shutting down while gaming

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 12:59 PM PDT

So, my Msi gt80 Titan is turning off after maybe like 10 mins of gaming (War Thunder mostly). It doesn't turn off while not gaming, but when i go into some of performance hungry games it just turns off and it won't turn on unless i get the power cord out of the outlet and then plug it back in, then it powers up when i press the start button. So i looked up on the internet for some solutions but everyone is saying that overheating is the problem, which in my case isn't (at least i think, cuz temps on the point of turning off is around 80°c, which is high but not over the 106°c limit, so im wondering is there a fix for that or my graphics cards, cpu or motherboard are gone. If someone knows what may cause the issue, i would be very grateful to know. Thanks

What's your experience with Acer build quality?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 12:45 PM PDT

I have (or had) an Acer Aspire 5 A515 and after 15 months, the charging port was no longer working - the repair shop said that the charging cable is integrated with the motherboard, so it would be about 80% of total cost to do a replacement.

My question is, is this an issue others have had with Acer? It feels like planned obsolescence for the laptop to have a catastrophic hardware failure 3 months after the warranty expires.

Suggestion: notebook pricing in two years (3 different configurations)

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 11:51 AM PDT

I'm trying to make a decision between different notebook configurations. I am torn between those configurations not only for budget reasons, or for performances, but also because I think I could try to sell it in a couple of years.

So I was trying to make the decision also by understanding how much I could earn back in a similar scenario.

They are clevo barebones and the configurations are:

    1) i7-10750, 1650Ti, 16gb Ram 2666, 500Gb Evo Plus 970 for 903€

    2) i7-11800H, 3050 Ti, Same ram and storage for 1051€

    3) i7-11800H paired with 3060 and same ram and storage for 1190€.

Before selling it, I would like to keep the Evo Plus and substitute it with a 512 Gb Crucial SSD MX500 that I bought a couple of years ago.

So for which price should I expect to sell them in a couple of years? Which is the usual loss in value for this kind of devices and how should I evaluate the relative obsolescence of the 10750H and 1650Ti.

I would go for the cheaper one, but I fear that the loss in value could be much higher than on the last two configurations. Because of the different architecture and tech of the CPUs (14nm vs 10nm), and also for the GPU, being the 3050Ti very recent, the 3060 recent, while the 1650 Ti being released an year and a half ago. I also read that those GPUs bring some relevant innovation that clearly distinguish them from the 1650Ti (definitely not an expert though).

Also, i think I understood that the value-for-money it is by far higher for the last one, hypothetically allowing me to sell it back for a closer price, in respect to what I could earn back from the first configuration.

What do you think? :) Thank you in advance!
