Camera for laptop use, is built-in needed?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 10:58 AM PDT

I have found a laptop I want with one negative: no Webcam.

Is this really a deal breaker?

Buying an external camera to use with it isn't a hassle in general is it?

yoga 6 vs zenbook 14 for college

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 01:22 PM PDT

hello! i'm looking for a secondary laptop for college this upcoming fall, mainly something portable with really long battery life since my current laptop is 17 inches and dies after 1-2 hrs :')

i've been debating between the yoga 6 and the zenbook 14 (mx450), both with 8gb of ram and 256gb ssd. there's currently a sale at best buy for the zenbook 14 at $540 (was $720)

i'm not sure whether to get the zenbook now or hold out and see if the yoga 6 goes on sale later on ;-; i'd prefer the yoga 6 so that i can fold it and have a small mechanical keyboard out, but it's currently like $750 and i'd preferr not to spend over $600 on a college laptop

Looking to get HP Envy x360 or Lenovo Flex 5

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 01:02 PM PDT

I'm definitely looking at convertibles. My budget is around $700. I'll use the pen for mostly note taking so it doesn't have to super accurate or pressure-sensitive. I'd prefer it to be a 5500U but I'll settle for Intel as well (as long as it doesn't run too hot). I've been looking around HP and Lenovo's websites and I can't find anything in stock. The ones on Amazon seem a bit too expensive than what the reviewers say.

Should I wait? Is there any sale or deals coming up anytime soon?

I appreciate your help. Thank you.

Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 - CPU overheating

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 12:40 PM PDT

So, my Zephyrus (17", with Intel i7 8750H) has a serious CPU overheating issue when I'm gaming. In Armoury Crate, I set the profile to Turbo, so the cooling is at a maximum. The laptop is on a hard surface, airflow is quite good. The room temperature hovers around 30°C, but the CPU regularly exceeds 95°C when gaming, sometimes even reaching 100. The GPU (2080 MaxQ) is fine, it never goes over 80 and it usually stays below 75, so I doubt the fans are blocked up, because then the GPU would overheat as well.

I don't recall the CPU ever heating up so much before, so I think the thermal paste might need to be changed. The laptop is slightly over 3 years old now, so that perhaps wouldn't be surprising. But, is that really the culprit, or could something else be the issue?

Also, is there a way to downclock the CPU from Armoury Crate or in some other simple way? I'm on vacation right now, and I don't have the tools required to replace the thermal paste, but I still want to play games, so underclocking the CPU would be a good way to avoid cooking it unnecessarily.

I've also heard that Intel CPUs physically change with age (resistance apparently increases), and that causes them to heat up more, is there any truth to that or is the overheating purely down to old thermal paste?

Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit, if this is considered off-topic, I will delete the post.

Why doesn't the Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 have a USB-C port that supports docking stations?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 11:54 AM PDT

I have been looking into buying a 2 in 1 laptop with some decent specs and the Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 15 seems like the best bang for my buck. It has everything I need, with just one fatal flaw. Its only USB-C port seems to only transfer power and not data.

This is a problem for me because I have a Lenovo docking station that I use every day for work. I really liked the idea of having a portable laptop but then being able to plug it into my docking station and use it with my dual monitors as if it were a PC.

Is there some reason why Lenovo doesn't make a model of the Ideapad with a thunderbolt port? Is it an expensive feature to add for some reason? Or maybe I am just in the minority of people who use USB-C for anything besides charging so it isn't worth adding.

The only other laptops I found that I liked that have more modern USB-C ports are the HP Spectre x360 and the Dell XPS, but both of those would cost a heck of a lot more than I wanted to spend.

Is there any workaround that would allow me to connect the Ideapad to my docking station? Or any other 2 in 1 laptop suggestions that would have a thunderbolt port or other USB-C port that would support data transfer?

Calculating laptop charges from an electric solar generator

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 11:32 AM PDT

I'm wondering how to calculate how many full charges I will get out of a given electric generator. I'm looking at a few options, but I want to be able to easily compare how many charges each option will give me. I'm assuming it's a calculation with the charger specs and the watt hours of the generator.

It would be super helpful if someone could lay out a formula/equation where I can punch in numbers, but otherwise here are the specs of my laptop and charger:

    • Aero 15 Laptop -- Appox. 95-99 Wh Battery, 19.5V 11.8A Input
    • Charger -- 100-240V 3.5A Input, 19.5V 11.8A 230W Output

    Choosing Between G15/Acer Nitro 5

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 11:29 AM PDT

Hey all, looking for a decent gaming laptop in Canada between $1,000 CAD and $1,500 CAD (before taxes) and I've been narrowing it down and found a couple to choose from. It's been tough finding stock and everything seems really expensive, but there are some good sales. Right now the Acer Nitro is on sale, but that ends tomorrow so today's the last day to order. These are them:

There are also some cheaper versions of the Dell G15, the biggest differences being between the 3050/3050 Ti/3060. The idea is a laptop that will last several years and be able to play most popular games at high-ish graphics settings. I've tried to find Lenovo laptops, which also seem highly recommended, but haven't found any. The Gigabyte ones are also more expensive, mainly because I can't find them on similar sales. Anyone have any advice or recommendations?

Any alternatives to Zephyrus g14/15 and TUF F15 ($1-2k) in Ukraine ?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 07:43 AM PDT

    • I need a sub~2kg machine with it's CPU and GPU in top25% of what's on the market (for it to last).

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      30-50k UAH
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I need the best performance to portability ratio
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      pretty important, <2,2kg <16inch only
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
nd heavy programming tasks (multicore big data analysis etc)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
would love to play some Witcher3, kingdom come deliverance, Half-Life alyx, etc. I don't care about fps as long as it's steady >30 on single player and ~60 on multiplayer FPS. Would love to be ready for tes6 and starfield though.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would love 2-in-1 with stylus and/or some toughness bonus (humidity etc) but they're not critical
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Specifically I'm considering between these two ASUS'':

    • zephyrus with AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS (3.0 - 4.3)
and nVidia GeForce RTX 2060, 6 GB
      for $1540USD
    • TUF F15 Intel Core i7-11370H (3.3 - 4.8 )
and nVidia GeForce RTX 3060, 6 GB
      for $1465USD

I'm open to other laptops with similar specs.

They each seem to have downsides which makes it very hard to decide (I would lean in to zephyrus for it's 14`` screen and better CPU but then it has no thunderbolt and TUF one is tougher for travels). If TUF would have same CPU, I woulnd't blink. If it would be a 2-in-1, i could wait for 500$ more, but they don't make 2-in-1s with good gpus :(

    Lenovo v14 opinions

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 07:36 AM PDT

Hi . I don't really know much about computers but i'm starting uni (humanities so no heavy softwares required) and looking for a laptop. Budget is 400£ or less. From my research tbe best sort of thing i can find is lenovo v14 AMD Ryzen 3 3250U 8GB ram 256gb SSD Windows 10 home. Tbe processing speed is 2.6hhz.

Anyone habe experience with this laptop? Do you like it? My main criteria are that it's going to be fast and responsive as well as long lasting and good battery. It's £379 so have some money left to buy an external hard drive as not sure how long 256gb would last me. It also has windows home installed not sure what that means. Could I get chrome browser on it? Microsoft word, etc?

so any opinions appreciated, this seems to be the laptop with the best specs in my price range. Most others have v low ram or a bad processor.
