I'm looking for a laptop for my college/job.

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 01:14 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Around 100000 INR (INDIA)

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery Life/Performance/Weight are important to me.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very important. Would prefer if it's light. Not necessarily the lightest.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      14-15.6 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Mostly college work with gaming maybe like twice a week

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not necessarily the latest games at the best settings/graphics but would prefer if i could play games which aren't demanding.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      Build Quality I guess.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Longevity. A laptop which could last me for atleast 4 years

TLDR Laptop which: - around 100000 INR (~1300$ USD) - 14"-15.6" - is lightweight - doesn't Heat too much - has good battery life - can last for 4 years or more - can be used for casual gaming (Games which aren't too demanding/can be run at decent settings)

I've been recommended the MacBook Air M1 and XPS 13 series, but since they're 13" I'm having them as the backup option.

What can an integrated graphics card such as the UHD 620 run?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 03:37 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I tried googling this very simple question, but I'm only finding reviews that list fps benchmarks on games that would make 0 sense to try to run on an igpu, such as GTA V or The Witcher 3 (wtf?).

Obviously triple A 3D modern games are not gonna run on a shitty igpu. But how about 2D indie games? Couldn't find a single review with indie games taken into account.

For example, these kinds of indie games : (long list but you get the idea, all easy to run)

    • Stardew Valley
    • Don't Starve
    • Undertale
    • Enter the Gungeon
    • Faster than Light
    • Into The Breach
    • Rogue Legacy
    • Invisible Inc
    • Disco Elysium
    • Baba Is You
    • The Witness
    • Hades
    • Darkest Dungeon
    • Rhythm Doctor
    • Terraria
    • Starbound
    • Minecraft
    • Project Zomboid
    • Risk of Rain
    • Treasure Adventure World
    • Curious Expedition
    • Grow Up
    • The Escapists
    • Legend of Grimrock
    • Druidstone
    • Planetbase
    • Slay The Spire
    • Celeste
    • Rimworld
    • Cuphead
    • Kingdom: New Lands
    • Braid
    • Binding of Isaac
    • Gris
    • Surviving Mars
    • Jazzpunk
    • LISA
    • Duskers
    • Planescape
    • The Longest Journey
    • Broken Age
    • Minit
    • Grim Fandango
    • Transistor
    • Factorio

I reckon they should run, but I actually have no idea, since I have no experience with laptops whatsoever. Don't wanna buy a non-gaming laptop and find out I can't even run stardew valley, starbound, or enter the gungeon for example.

Also, how about emulators? Like an N64 or GC emulator? And finally, would it lag while playing HEVC vids?

    Thanks for the help!

Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 or Acer Nitro 5

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 02:14 AM PDT

The lenovo ideapad gaming 3 has Ryzen 5 4600H/GTX1650 and the Acer Nitro 5 has a Ryzen 7 5800H and GTX1650TI. The Acer nitro costs 590 more (in my currency) and if I add another 600 to the Acer's price, I can get the Lenovo Legion with the GTX1660Ti. I'm worried if the screen and overall feel of the Acer wouldn't be to my liking but I also like the internals that It has. I'll mainly use a laptop for Tf2 and genshin impact along with college assignments

XPS 13/15 vs ROG Flow X13

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 09:36 AM PDT

I'm shopping for a new laptop for the upcoming school year. Currently, I'm torn between the XPS line and the Flow X13.

The biggest question I have is, which is more future-proof? I'm spending enough money to where I don't want to buy a new laptop for at least 4 or 5 years.

For reference, I'm an IT major. The most important things to me are computer speed and durability. I am not a serious gamer as of right now.

    I appreciate any help.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1500

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, been looking at Dell Outlet specifically.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Ultrabook, 2-in-1 not preferred, durable to be used for school transport, and want it blazing fast.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13-14in

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Photo editing and light gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Minecraft, Stadia

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    More ports

Dell g15 vs MSI 14 presicion? Which one to get for school and mild gaming?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 10:32 PM PDT

On one hand the dell g15 has better raw specs, but the screen and build quality are a bit lacking. Plastic chassis, and a 1080p display at 250-300nits

On the other, the MSI has a 4k screen, brighter, lighter, and metal chassis. But the CPU and gpu are weaker

Can't make up my mind. And for reference, I'm wanting the 4k display to be able to fit more on the screen: not so much for gaming

    Best laptop/2in1 for Engineering students?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 08:54 PM PDT

I've been researching and I still haven't found the perfect laptop to suit my needs. I don't want to spend more than $1,500 on a laptop, but I know need a pretty good device. I also do photography on the side and use Adobe photography programs that I would like for my laptop to support as well. I prefer a touchscreen and have been leaning towards surface pro/book. Any suggestions??

    College CS / Gaming Laptop

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1400 USD limit but preferably lower of course

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance > build quality > battery life > form factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Doesn't matter at all

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6 minimum

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

VScode, unity, general programming stuff. The most intensive games would probably be modded skyrim / divinity OS 2

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

No touch screen, I'll be getting a separate mouse and of course I'd like the keyboard to be nice.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

https://prnt.sc/1a4v9ib I've been looking at these three, or the Swift X and am wondering if there's any major flaws in them. I guess the biggest difference between these is integrated vs dedicated graphics and I've heard very conflicting opinions on how big the difference is.

    Thank you!!

Laptop for the next 5/6 years of studying

    Hello

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Less than 2000€ in France
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Ideally, a battery that can do a full day of class so 10/11 hours(not sure if that's possible if not it's okay), and as for performance a fluid experience and decent build quality.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Doesn't really matter
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13 or 14 or 15
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'm gonna be in an engineering school in France so I'll have to use OneNote to take notes/do maths, maybe Matlab, vscode, LaTeX and stuff like this, maybe some CAD as well.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Not particularly, I won't have the time to game anyway tbh lmao
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I need a good reactive touch-screen and a screen that won't destroy my eyes ideally
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      16gb of ram as well

    Thank you

Suggest a laptop for at most $500 that can run Minecraft and rpgmaker games smoothly.

    Posted: 10 Jul 2021 09:18 AM PDT

Pretty much the title but I guess I'll say that I'm going to Grad school this fall but I would assume that a laptop that can run Minecraft would be strong enough to multitask in between documents. I would like for it to be pretty sleek and slim.

Suggest them from the cheapest I could go to the the max $500.

    Thanks in advance!
