Laptop for computer science and engineering student, good battery is a must

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 04:35 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $800-$1000

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Good battery life is a must....something that doesn't die in between classes. Not something plastic ish but don't want the lightest premium feeling laptop either....build quality has to be solid and has to feel solid. 2 in 1 is nice if possible but not a must.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

As long as it's not a bulky gaming beast I'm fine with it

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15 inch maybe but doesn't matter

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Visual studio, matlab, lots of ides, maybe virtual machine, cad modeling softwares, Photoshop etc.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Apex legends, csgo, valorant etc fps games.... aiming for 60 fps medium ish settings maybe. But if other specs are all good then as long as I can run games and they're playable I'm ok with it

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Metal build maybe (I'm into metal), solid hinge etc

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Currently have a flex 5 4700u, 16gb, 512gb ssd 2 in 1 which is fine and all but 14" is a bit small for me and it doesn't feel premium. It's brand new so I can sell it still. Aiming for 5000 series cpu with 8 cores and 16gb ram (or 8gb upgradable) and ssd slot. Has to have a goodass battery that lasts a long time because I hate batteries running low.

    Thanks

Option 2: MSI Sword 15.6" FHD 144Hz Gaming Laptop i7-11800H 16GB 512GB RTX3050 Win10 Also about 1800$ - havnt really looked into this one much

Option 3: Infinity O5-4R7G5-888 15.6" 120Hz Gaming Laptop R7-4800H 16GB 512GB 1650 W10H About 1400$ - it looks fine but i dont think its as good compared to the others

    Would an SSD improve performance?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 10:21 PM PDT

Hello! I bought a laptop in late 2019 and I bought it under the idea that I would use it for school as well as some gaming. Now it's not an insane laptop, and I bought it for 800 dollars at Costco. Here are my specs.

    HP Pavilion

    Intel Core i7-1065G7 CPU @ 1.30 GHz

16 GB installed RAM (15.8 GB usable)

    NVIDIA GeForce MX250

    8 GB video RAM

    64 bit system

    Windows 10 Home

    1 TB Hard Drive

I have never really listed specs before so please let me know if I missed anything or if I said anything unnecessary in my specs.

Now I thought these specs were pretty good for a laptop, I can run league of legends well IF my laptop is plugged in, otherwise I stagger like crazy. I could barely handle CSGO but valorant was much better. I wanted to run Dead by Daylight or Hunt:Showdown, but both sound VERY unrealistic considering I can barely handle minecraft without my laptop going VROOM while only running with a render distance of 8. I have to stay plugged in to play anything with fps.

I realized my mistake in getting an HDD instead of an SSD almost immediately after buying the laptop but the SSD version was so vastly downgraded that I just decided to stick with it. My write speeds are like 300 kb/s to my HDD, would I just benefit a lot more from an SSD? Besides loading in games as well as loading web pages, would performance in games increase drastically as well? I believe my CPU has a potential speed of 3.90 GHz, so I theoretically should be able to play games like Hunt based on the specs right? What gives?

If I should get an SSD? Which one should I get? I would prefer a size of 512 GB if possible, and I'm willing to pay up to $150 for a better ssd, what do you recommend? If it costs more than 150 please list it still, I may be able to get one over that price if I need to.

Need help choosing this 2 laptop

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 03:12 AM PDT

I am planning to get a new laptop. I had a last generation cpu and gpu in my mind. I have narrowed down my search to this 2 laptop. HP Omen 15 en1029ax and Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16ach6h

Both had same ryzen 7 5k series, rtx 3060, 1tb ssd and 16gb ram. The color accuracy pretty much the same. The different was lenovo had mux switch, stronger gpu wattage (max power while omen was lower wattage) and better build quality. Lenovo also had higher refresh rate (165, hp 144). Omen priced at $1520 (idr to usd) and the lenovo priced at $1790. So im asking for suggestion. Omen or lenovo

    Laptop for Architecture School

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 07:59 PM PDT

Hi everyone! My first time posting here so I apologize if I've made any mistakes in terms of formatting.

I'm going to be entering Architecture School soon, and I'm looking for a laptop to get in my second semester with the following specs as recommended by my school:

    • CPU/Processor: Intel i7 and above or AMD Ryzen
    • RAM: 16GB and above
    • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GEFORCE 20 Series
    • Storage: 512 GB SSD and above

I'll be using software such as AutoCAD, Rhino, Sketchup, Enscape, Adobe apps and so on.

I've been debating between the Dell XPS 15, HP Omen, Dell Alienware or Lenovo Legion 5i.

I'm leaning more towards the Dell XPS because it's sleek and easy to carry around campus, and since I'm not a gamer I don't see the need for such a heavy-duty laptop. I'm also slightly reserved about getting Lenovo or HP because I've heard bad things about their products and customer service, although it's much cheaper than Dell products :(

My budget is a maximum of SGD 2.9k, although I would prefer if I can save as much money as possible, so I'm posting on this sub to get some advice :") Thank you in advance!

    Edit: Laptop Questionnaire

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Maximum of SGD 2.9k

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Would prefer to have a good battery life and something that won't break down :")

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Very, would appreciate something lighter

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      Prefer 15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

AutoCAD, Adobe Apps, Rhino, Enscape, Sketchup etc

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      No

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

As long as it doesn't breakdown HAHAHA

[Korea 1000000-1300000] Budget Gaming Laptop for Genshin Impact and Maplestory

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 05:40 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I'd like to spend 1 million krw or less but I'd be willing to go up to 1.3 million KRW.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I am open to refurbs/used but wouldn't know 100% where to find them.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I ...kind of don't know what this means. Performance I think is most important. I just want a smooth running experience being able to play my games. It may be important to note that I will be running a VPN on it a lot to play maplestory.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
It is important but not the most important. I would be commuting with it on my back.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Maplestory and Genshin Impact are the vital two games I'd be playing on it. No video editing or photo editing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      60 FPS. Medium visual settings
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
It would be nice if the build was reliable but things like touch screen or fingerprint readers are unnecessary. Nice to have but not important enough that I have to have them.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I just want to play the games and not have to worry about the game not being able to perform well with the laptop specs and be able to have the laptop last quite a while.

    Incoming CS major laptop suggestions?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 04:25 AM PDT

Hey there, I'm going to be a freshman CS major in a few months and am looking to buy a new laptop. within reason, I don't really have a budget but would like recommendations from various price ranges.

    Top consideration:

    • I'm mainly looking for a laptop that I can completely rely on and one that would make my tasks at uni easier

    Additional considerations:

    • I enjoy gaming and would want to be able to run higher-quality games if possible.
    • I've recently gotten into digital note-taking, so a touch screen would be helpful. However, I am not too hell-bent on the idea of that and would be willing to compromise this if it means a higher functioning laptop.
    • High functioning and at quick speeds.
    • My current laptop has a terrible battery life so one with a reliable battery life would be great.
    • This is probably my least important factor, but a laptop that looks cool would be nice lol.

Thanks a lot in advance, can't wait for the suggestions!

Trying to get out of dead end retail and move into software development, the 2 year course I'm looking at is recommending the following specs below, any help greatly appreciate I'm really struggling right now

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 04:19 AM PDT

Hi guys. Ive had a history degree for the past few years but as expected cannot find employment. Looking to move into the software development field as I have gotten extremely depressed working in retail. Im quite poor and have no real family so naively hoped my current laptop would do, but sadly the courses I am looking at recommend the following:

"*We recommend a substantial hardware configuration. Its minimal suitable configuration is 8GB of RAM (16GB are recommended); a modern 64-bit x86 multi-core processor (Intel i5 or superior); 250+ GB of available space in hard disk; WiFi card; and a recent version of Ubuntu, macOS, or Windows*"

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Approx 600 - 750 euros, I'm in Ireland.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Preferably not.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance for cost is everything, value for money basically. I dont care if its super ugly.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not important.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
The course info doesnt mention what programmes will be used, however it talks about mobile app development and computer networking.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality is important as I need this to last me a while.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Thanks guys, i have nobody I can ask this stuff to irl so i appreciate such a friendly helpful community.

Looking for a great to look at 2 in 1 Laptop for outdoors usage

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 03:25 AM PDT

    Hi,

im looking for a new Laptop. It has to be a convertible design. My budget is around 1200. I'll be using it mostly for office stuff, but sometimes I work with Rstudio, where my current Surface Book(1) gets super loud, which is annoying. Also I value a good design and would prefer something that lets me read texts outdoors. Ive been looking at: Dell xps 2 in 1, HP Spectre 360, Samsung Flex/Pro Book etc. but they all seem to have some weakness. I really love the Samsung Style but it seems you cant use these outdoors at all. Anything you could recommend? I should add I absolutely hate Lenovo products with that ugly red dot in the middle

    3060 130w vs 3070 80w

best cheap gaming laptop? US, $500-800

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 03:01 PM PDT

i know that's a really tight budget, but i'm really just looking for a laptop that can run games smoothly. i think that's the only thing i'd use it for. i have a mac for day to day use and the laptop would just allow me to play games that are only available on windows. i had bootcamp on my mac for a while but had to delete it cause it was taking up too much space. i don't know much about computers at all, so id love some suggestions. even if you can suggest something more expensive, up to around $800, i'd love to hear it. thank you!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      500-800 dollars, US

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

performance, battery life, build quality, form factor

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

it won't be traveling much so heavier is okay

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      around 15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

gaming - nothing huge like cyberpunk. more small games like the forest

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

i want it around 60 fps ideally, 1080, mostly games that are only available on windows

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    no

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Next year I'll start university and i need a laptop that can serve me in study, development and light gaming, I'll be dong a lot of back and forth and I'll have to bring it with me. I need this laptop of being capable of long coding sessions and to serve as a desktop when I'm at home for document managing, multitasking and some gaming

Preferably not and only if they come with a warranty
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I need this laptop to last for at least 3 - 4 years, a longer battery life would also be nice and considering I live in a hot weather good cooling would help

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Mainly long coding session with visual studio
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
curently apex, titanfall 2, bf 4 maybe 2042 at at least 50-60 stable fps, even if I have to downgrade to min graphics
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
a nice and sturdy keyboard is needed, in general a sturdy build that can survive daily transport in a backpack

    Guide me please

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 12:05 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy a laptop for creating YouTube videos. I am not that knowledgeable about pc specs so I'm asking for guidance for a laptop (or specs) that would work for me.

Basically all I need is to be able to record and edit the videos I produce. The most critical part is I can't work if the pc is freeze/laggy so the most important thing is that it will operate flawlessly.

Also I prefer the cheaper (cheapest) laptop that will be able to do this work. I don't have a specific budget, please don't roast me for this.

    Thanks in advance

Hello! I'm pretty tight on budget that's why I'm deciding for either one of those. I want to know what's going to be better in the long run especially in gaming. Performance, TDP, cooling, etc.

Cheapest Laptop for Gaming Use Only?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 11:22 PM PDT

I already have a laptop I use for everything else in life. I want a laptop for gaming only that supports the latest advances in tech, especially RTX. I play on Steam/GeForce/Stadia... display size does not matter as I have a separate monitor I will connect to... Any Suggestions? Or am I all wrong, would it be more worth it to invest in one laptop for both? Would need to take into account for storage and RAM... anyone have a specific combination or set-up between computer/laptop/monitor that works? Anything optimal?
