    Picture of the connection

So beforehand the internet service went from a box at&t installed into my garage (thats where the photo is taken) through those networking cables into the family room where my router is. The tv service I had was internet based, and the tv I had was in another room, so the way that one was plugged into the router was through the connection in the picture. That is, from my router I had a cable going back into the wall with the home networking cables, which in turn was going to my old tv room.

Now that I cancelled my tv service, I wanted to instead plug my pc in the same way (its in a different room). So I wanted to rerout the connection going out of my router into the garage to my pc room instead of my tv room, but the connection us as shown. Can I do anything about this?

Hope everything I made sense, as I myself am very new to this stuff. I'll clarify anything I can. Thanks!

How To Unlock The Coax Cable Outside

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 03:07 PM PDT

I have Spectrum internet and need to turn this: https://imgur.com/a/RGuTwPp

into a splitter. Once I unscrew it from the brick wall how would I go about doing this? Need to add moca adapters inside but a splitter outside would help me bring in one of the coax cables downstairs easier (through the window nearby). Additionally, can I call spectrum and ask them to do this for me?

Help with unifying network with more access points

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 09:58 AM PDT

Hello, first of all I am very much a user with low knowledge of networking, so this question is kind of a "does it actually work that way" question.

I live in a flat in an old European building with a 1m thick wall between the entry hall+bathroom+1st bedroom part and the kitchen+living+2nd bedroom part. As a result the IP provided router/modem/AP (Compal CH7465VF) which is situated in the entry hall, where it must be due to the actual internet cable coming from the building staircase, basically has 0 signal in the 2nd part of the flat.

I knew this might be an issue so during reconstruction I had the foresight to run ethernet cat6 cables to both the living room and the 2nd bedroom. This is also so I can hard wire my battlestation.

For a while my temp solution was to use an old router I had lying around and set it up as an AP, which kind of worked. Since then I bought a Unifi AP AC LR. I finally set it up through a network switch in the living room (hard wired to the Compal) and it works great, and reaches both parts of the flat with anywhere from 40-60 Mbps (hard wire is 300ish Mbps which is what I pay for atm, can go up to 1Gbps but expensive).

However in the entryhall+bathroom+1st bedroom I get about 40 Mbps from the Unifi but 150ish Mbps from the Compal as I am right next to it.

So finally my question: ATM both Compal and Unifi have their own SSID and I can switch them manually as needed. If I set them both as the same SSID will my wireless devices (Samsung S10e and A50 + whatever guests have) connect to the "fastest" AP automatically, i.e. switch between as needed?

    Thank you

EDIT: yes I could just do it and see what happens but I dont want to fuck anything up

Help! TCP / UDP port forwarding. Internal vs External port?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 12:53 PM PDT

Currently trying to go over some Port Forwarding to play COD Warzone. I've been unable to play since a year ago, went over some posts and apparently the issue is something related to port forwarding.

However even though I made it to my router security settings where I can setup the port forwarding, I don't understand the ports that I'm given

    TCP: 1935, 3478-3480

    UDP: 3074, 3478-3479

It wants me to provide an Start - End port, and a Protocol (TCP, UDP, or both).

Not sure how to go about it. Tried using in both (start and end input) the 3074 value, but did not work. Also tried Start: 3478, End: 3480, using the "Both" Protocol, but apparently did not work.

I have no way to know if I'm doing it the wrong way, or if it's not working at all.

EDIT: Tried different combination by following some Youtube tutorials. Still no luck. If I connect my console to my phone hotspot I can get into the game and even play, but with my wifi connection it just throws an connection error. (I still can play any other online game)

Wifi router converted to network switch

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 03:20 PM PDT

So I needed to add a few more Ethernet ports to my Velop set up.

I decided to configure an unwanted wifi router to a gigabit switch.

TLDR; the outcome is now working as expected. But I am unsure if I should set it up again for a couple of reasons.

Basically what I wanted was the switch to have 1. no DHCP, 2. dynamically get its IP from the velop system (in case I plug it to a new network) 3. No wifi

what I did was configure no dhcp and dynamic ip. Switch was connected to the network via the WAN/internet port. Once this configure was made, I was no longer able to get any IP assignment when connected to the switch. Then I decided to connect one of the LAN ports to the network, and then the switch was operating as I want it to (albeit down one LAN port) I didn't actually get a chance to turn of the wifi and I can no longer get on to the switch's web interface to make further config changes. (The wifi however, can be turned off by a physical button on the unit) Checking my velop system it doesn't appear that the switch has any ip. Velop is reporting any downstream devices connected via Ethernet as connected wired to the Velop. Also, I don't know why the switch has accepted its "network" connection to be the LAN ports that it chose (fluke?). I don't remember configuring that up. My concern is that after a power outage etc the network connection for the switch would change and I won't be able to configure it up again.

Should I set this up again from scratch? And how do I know (or how does it know) what lan port it's for its network?

How well do Thunderbolt 3 10GbE adapters work compared to internal PCEe NICs?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 01:24 AM PDT

Since Thunderbolt 3 has a native PCIe bus, would an 10GbE adapter plugged into it work just as well an an internal NIC? Would there be any speed or latency penalties worth considering?

What about a USB 10Gb port as opposed to an actual Thunderbolt port?

QOS options help on D-Link router for prioritizations

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 12:24 PM PDT

Ok, hear me out for a bit. Currently I have fiber internet with 30Mbps(download) and 10Mbps(upload). I'm currently playing warzone with my bro on Pc(me) and Ps4(bro) but there's one problem; we always experience lag spikes and packet loss whenever the bandwidth is hogged. This is because my dad always streams 4k Netflix which takes up to 25Mbps. My dad refused to upgrade to a higher speed plan, so my only option is to opt for QOS to at least make it better. But my router has some options in the QOS setup page that I need help with(picture attached below in the link). I already obtained the IP and mac addresses for my pc and ps4. Link to picture: https://imgur.com/a/fVCCPql

    Questions are as below:

    1. Do I need to assign static DHCP for the pc and ps4 clients for QOS to work?
    2. If I apply QOS for my pc and ps4 with the highest priority, do I need to assign the TV(the client that hogs bandwidth) with the lowest priority or will it work just fine just with the pc and ps4 only assigned?
    3. A few stuff from from the QOS setup page that I don't understand: Local port, Remote port, Remote IP address, Remark DSCP and Remark 802.1p (!most important question!)
    4. Why does the IP and Port section have ranges?
    5. Will it improve my current problem with lag spikes and packet loss?
    6. What is the correct percentage from my actual speed do I input at the uplink and downlink speed?

    What I'm trying to achieve:

    1. Reduce or completely eliminate(if possible) the lag spikes and packet loss when playing.
    2. Prioritize my incoming and outgoing packets for gaming.

A few side notes and info:

    1. I've already port forwarded warzone on pc but not on ps4 because the ports overlap
    2. Router: Model(DIR-825M), Hardware Version(A1), Firmware version(DIR-825M_V1.1.8)
    3. Both pc and ps4 using 5g connections(ethernet cable connection is not possible for my situation)
    4. TV is connected via ethernet cable.
    5. QOS setup page options: Protocol(Both, TCP, UDP), Mode(Guaranteed Minimum and Restricted Maximum Bandwidth)

I really appreciate the help given. My main problem right now is lag spikes and packet loss whenever the network is loaded(not only by 4k streaming). So, I'm trying to understand the QOS setup page where I'm not familiar with some of the terms.

Moca Confusing Me, Is The Right Alternative?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 08:19 PM PDT

Diagram of what I'd like to do: https://imgur.com/RzNeAD4

Bear with me, I've made multiple annoying and inarticulate posts regarding this but I'm trying to keep it concise. I've got this : https://imgur.com/43RDhu3 outside my house. Can't find any sort of box that other people have. White line comes from the house, black is coming from the roof wherever that goes.

If this won't mess up my internet, I need to add a splitter in the second photo and add another coax cable. The window that I want to take that second coax cable through is 3 feet from it. I can't run it from upstairs in the diagram because I can't drill through the floor or wall or run an ethernet cable down stairs and through the hallway.

Will this work if I have a Moca adapter downstairs connecting to the new coax cable and another one after the new 3 way splitter connected to it and the modem? And can I do this myself or do I need a professional to do it for me (especially regarding the second picture outside)?

Aggregation Switch or Daisy Chain switches (Home Use)

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 08:09 PM PDT

Curious for home use, is it better to use an aggregation switch (like this unifi one) and connect three switches to it via 10gig sfp port OR daisy chain the three switches via a 10gigabit sfp port?

I just want to forward my isp connection to the three switches.

Looking for router with WPA2/3 Enterprise support

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 08:02 PM PDT

I'm in the market for a new router, I don't have much of a budget, but I'd like to ideally have a router with:

    • Wi-Fi 6 (AX)
    • WPA3 Enterprise support (I can supply a Raspberry Pi with a RADIUS server)
    • At least four Ethernet ports (which any router should really be able to support...)

I am a sysadmin by day so I know how to configure stuff... I might be able to afford an Ubiquiti setup (which would be nice) but I'm not so sure if that's up my ally budget-wise right now. If I was to go Ubiquiti, I would get a security gateway, a 5-port switch (or 8-port, depending on budget), and a U6-Lite and host the controller on the Pi.

I may be able to install DD-WRT on the router to meet criteria #2, but from what I've read, DD-WRT doesn't support Wi-Fi 6? (Is that correct?)

However, I'm not really familiar with the market outside of Ubiquiti and other similar enterprise stuff. Are there any options that anyone would recommend that's a little more budget friendly? Thanks!

MoCA POE filter directly on the modem/router?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 10:00 AM PDT

I just had Shaw gigabit service installed, with the XB7 gateway.

I want to use this MoCA adapter to get an ethernet connection to my gaming PC in the basement.

I will be running an internet-only setup (no cable TV, just streaming) and I was wondering if I have to install the POE filter where the cable enters the house, or if I can just install it at the back of the XB7.

Any advice would be appreciated. Also, can someone recommend a POE filter? Does it matter what kind/brand I get?

I want to share my WiFi with someone in my apartment building. But the signal strength isn't quite strong enough.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 07:28 PM PDT

I live on the second floor and they are on the first floor on a different part of the building. For example, I'm apartment 200 and they are apartment 110.

I am able to get a signal on my phone and iPad, but only a few bars. What would be a good option for us to use to strengthen the signal for them. Would a mesh node be a decent option?

    Comparison of custom router firmware

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 07:25 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm becoming interested in the world of custom router firmware. My current, ISP supplied router is locked down hard and so I am looking for a new device to take its place. I'm looking to try all of the big three firmwares (OpenWRT, DD-WRT, Tomato) and maybe some smaller ones (Asus-Merlin, Gargoyle). However I am having trouble find a device which is compatible with each of these. As DD-WRT is based off of OpenWRT as far as I know there isn't an issue there, but when searching for devices compatible with Tomato my choices are extremely limited. My thinking is to go through the list of supported Tomato devices manually and to check them against the OpenWRT and DD-WRT databases but this is going to be tedious.

Do you guys know of any routers which are supported by all three? I have no real major requirements other than a reasonable price.

    Thanks,

    Kibble.

Trying to bring wifi to my folks' 10 acre property

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 04:49 AM PDT

My folks own a 10 acre property with few different barns, outhouses, etc on the grounds. I want to bring wifi to all of them. Currently there is internet at the house (at the edge of the property), but I read that ethernet cables are only good for 100m, so burying ethernet cables to all the other places isn't going to work. How can I bring wifi to this place? Thanks in advance!

Edit: So looks like burying fiber to wireless access points will be my best bet. I have no clue how to do this/what to look for when I buy the equipment. Could someone explain how to go from ethernet port on the router to ethernet port on WAP with fiber optics?

My WiFi stopped working on my Netgear nighthawk all of the sudden, but it was "old" so to be expected. So I bought a new one, and it worked for a few weeks, but now has done the same thing. The modem seems fine as anything hardwired to it works well. I'm stumped.

Help please. Mesh Wifi 5 or Wifi 6?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 07:59 AM PDT

Looking to upgrade to a mesh system for a 2 level, 3000 sq ft house. Our ISP is TMo home internet with speeds ~ 100mbps. Probably have a dozen WiFi devices around the house, though only our cell phones are able to connect to WiFi 6. Choosing between the ASUS Zen AC CT8 vs. Zen AX XT8. Does anyone have an opinion on whether it's worth going with the WiFi 6 XT8? Thanks in advance.

Best way to run cable for Ethernet ports?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 09:32 AM PDT

I am renovating a room that will likely be where my PC ends up. Not sure where exactly so I was going to put an Ethernet port on both ends so I won't have to run too long of a patch cable wherever it ends up. What is the best cable to use in the walls, and what are the best methods for installing wall ports?

I've read to use solid cable, but didn't know if there was a certain type or anything. I've seen wall ports that have a female on both sides so you can just plug a cable on the inside of the wall. Would that work? Or is punching down the cable into the back of a wall plate fairly idiot-proof? Thanks!

Is cat 5 ok for the home, or should I future proof?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 04:47 PM PDT

Based in the UK. I recently bought some reolink cameras that came with CAT5 ethernet cables. The house was already wired, so no need to use them.

However, I'd now like to use one of them to power a network switch in my office upstairs to give internet to my personal pc and work pc, originally connecting to my router down stairs. It should hopefully be a fairly basic job by going out the house, running alongside it and through the wall to the office.

My question is would cat5 suffice? Seems like all the craze is about 5e or 6, but I only plan to do work + gaming, so nothing too strenuous. Or should I invest in cat5e/6?

Also, my internet isn't great as it is, at least until virgin media are in the area. 25mbps download and 5.4 upload with Plusnet.

    Thanks!

    TP-Link EAP245 without Omada controller

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 07:35 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

That not my first post on my project and it'll surely not be the last ! :]

Recap : I want to secure my network at home, I have different devices than I want separate with VLAN, some use Wifi (VLAN 10 - Printer, VLAN 20 - Iot, VLAN 30 - laptop) and other are use Ethernet (VLAN 40 - professional laptop, VLAN 50 - NAS, VLAN 60 - cameras). I want to separate them like some could communicate between them (IOT with NAS but without internet, camera only with the NAS, laptop with Internet, NAS and server).

Solution found : I was thinking to use for the wifi part a TP-Link EAP245, but without the Omada controller. It will be connected to a Cisco CBS350-8FP-2G (mode Trunk) maybe if possible in POE.

    here are my questions :

    - Does this configuration seem good for you ?

    - Do I need to configure all the VLANs on both equipment's ?

    - can I restricted some VLAN to access others (ex :VLAN 10 can be access only by VLAN 30 and VLAN40)

    - can I restricted internet access for some VLANs

I think I missed a firewall part but it will be for later :)

    Have a good day !
