I hear Cradlepoints highly recommended, but the pricing with yearly licensing is a bit of a out off. They have a Unifi stack, so would be connecting to a USG. They've signed up for Starlink, but I think it will be a while. Will be using ATT DataConnect plan.

    POE camera at 600+ feet

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 05:03 PM PDT

I'm pretty rural, and my driveway is about 600' long. I'd like to put a camera at the gate (600' from the house). I don't have power there, and I'm hoping I can use POE extenders and a POE camera to get the job done. Bonus points if I can put a sensor on the gate that tells me the open/closed status.

I drew a picture, but it appears that's not OK here. Hopefully some bad ASCII art won't get me booted.

House (with internet & power) ---200'--> 120v power ---400'--> gate

I was wondering if I could run ethernet from the house for 200'. Use a POE switch (or ???) to go another 200' and use a POE extender to go the final 200', and put a POE hub (Ubiquity Switch Flex Utility, for example).

Is it reasonable to go that far and have a camera work?

I'm open to any other ideas. But keep in mind there's no power at the gate, and there's enough tree coverage that wireless most likely won't work.

My sister has an internet account at the address I am moving to. She turns the wifi on and off as she pleases and snoops through others' internet activity. How to set up my own network? Do I need to set up internet with a different provider? Will a second router work?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 04:34 PM PDT

I am tech illiterate in this regard.

I'm moving onto my mom's property, and my sister already has a Uverse account set up there. My brother also lives there. We have a wireless camera system set up, and she keeps turning off the wifi in order to snoop through my brother's things without us being alerted. She has also been bragging to my brother about behing able to look at everyone's internet activity.

I need some way to have my own internet connection so I can have some privacy. I'd also add the cameras to my network so she can't turn them off. What can I do?

Cheapest way to add a separate or more secure network to Cox’s shitty Panoramic router for a helium miner?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 04:47 PM PDT

I'm super new to this but trying to learn how to do this somewhat "right". My friend is loaning me a Helium miner (RAK hotspot miner V2). I live with two roommates and want to respect their internet security. I've heard the best way to do this with a miner is to separate it from the main wifi network.

Problem is, the Cox modem/router my roommate has setup with the internet seems impossible to do this with. It doesn't even have an option for a guest network since Cox implemented their "Cox hotspot". It's not VLAN capable either. It has two Ethernet cable ports.

Is there a simple and affordable way to add some security here? I was looking at VLAN switches, a unifi ap ac lr, a spitter for the coax and a whole separate internet line, but it all seems overly complicated or quite expensive, or STILL won't work with this shitty router. What am I missing? Is there a straightforward way to do this without buying a whole new system?

Best way to assign 140 static ip's to mobile devices.

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 05:32 PM PDT

I'm not quite sure how to start this post other than- I have 140 cell phones what need static ip's assigned to them.

In the coming weeks I'm getting a /25 (126 usable static ip's). Along with a gigabit connection. The reason I'm doing this is that I'm basically doing software testing and many of the programs I test have IP limits on their programs to prevent more than their allowed device limit.

Currently im planning on having two phones per IP address as I haven't encountered a program yet that doesn't allow at least 2 devices per IP and this way I don't have to spend the extra money for a 256 ip block. I know that I'm going to need a DHCP server for assigning the ip's to the phones. I'm not sure about what the best way to do that is. I have a small amount of Active Directory experience, as well as using the router as a DHCP server. But, I'm not convinced that these are the best options.

    Also looking for router recommendations.

Thanks in advanced, I'm a little out of my knowledge base on this project.

Built a Ubiquiti network for a new home Surveillance system, but now everything is painfully slow.

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 04:38 PM PDT

I'm a noob, sorry up front.

Up until now I had used a Nighthawk router and TP Link switch. During the research & planning for the new system I decided on the Dream Machine Pro, Layer 3 24 port Switch, dedicated PoE Switch for cameras and WiFi 6 Lite AP's, plus "for fun" added a 10g Aggregate Switch so I could build a file Server into the system.

The DMP runs to the L3 Switch via SFP+, then to the 10Gb Switch, and from there to the PoE Switch; also via SFP+. Oddly, the Cameras are the only thing working flawlessly thus far.

My issues are as follows: 1.) If I connect my PC's to the network using 10Gb NIC's (TP-Link), Internet connection takes about 5 minutes, and is roughly 70% slower than using the mobo's 1Gb port. 2.) WiFi connection and speeds are abysmal, even sitting directly below the AP. (1640 Sq ft floor with 2 AP's). Friends visiting can connect to my Ubiquiti Wizard created Guest Network, but despite acknowledging correct password, are restricted from using it. Same for my main WiFi Network. It works for my phone roughly 50% of the time, but the speeds have never been good.

I'm guessing the SFP+ connections have something to do with this... or the order I have the Switches connected, but I'm not sure how to troubleshoot. I'm still learning, so I still haven't figured out how to use my VLAN's, setup port forwarding, Firewall rules, etc. Honestly, I am a bit over-whelmed at the moment. I thought this would be a fun Summer project, and I have learned a lot, but the more tutorials I watch at this point, the more confused I get.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

The Gateway modem/router that came with my AT&T Fiber Optic internet came with a short ONT cable which means the router stays in the kitchen. I'd rather it be closer to the TV and gaming system, though. Can I use a normal yellow ethernet cable (cat 5) to replace it?

Which Router for a small studio?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 07:16 PM PDT

Currently I've tried a TP-Link WR841N and a Linksys E2500, which I got as hand downs. But with both I've been having troubles with a unstable connection, especially on my iPhone 11. Which isn't surprising since 1) these are old low spec routers and 2) there are a lot of other networks around me. Typically I can see about 15-20 other networks from neighbours in the list.

So I'm looking for a new router. I don't do anything special, like handling big files/streaming/competitive gaming etc. I just need it to be stable and reasonably fast. And I like it to have a USB 3.0 port and decent read/write speeds. I know a NAS is superior for network storage, but I just need basic functionality.

Also: would Wi-Fi 6 be important? I saw that performance wise it generally doesn't make a lot of difference, on lower/mid end routers at least. But could it be more stable with supported devices?

    My budget is around $80-120

[Question] Limit a VPN's routing to only SSH and rsync commands

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 06:42 PM PDT

I'm a bit new to networking so please let me know if I'm being ambiguous, or if this is an inappropriate question.

    • I am on my home computer called H, and trying to access a VM, I'll call it V.
    • To connect to V, I need to establish a connection from H to a VPN called P.
    • I am able to do this by using OpenConnectVPN to connect to P, then SSH to V.
    • However, I'd like to limit my internet traffic's routing so that only the SSH to V is through P. For example, I do not want my web browsing to go through P.

Is there a way to do this? To further complicate the problem, sometimes I require rsync from V as well, which needs to go through P.

For some context: I "can't" (maybe there's a solution...?) just temporarily connect to P, because I am actually connecting to H via SSH, and when I turn on P, my SSH to H disconnects.

    Purchasing recommendations for gaming

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 06:16 PM PDT

What is the best device configuration to purchase for gaming use case in mind? If use case doesn't matter what is the best device configuration to purchase period for high speed internet that eliminates buffer bloat? Price is not an issue, but I'd like to be intelligent with my money.

    https://www.waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat?test-id=735823d0-4a84-4062-a0e4-c9c2a1b5add4

That was my test result for bufferbloat. Unfortunately I play a game called Apex Legends which is plagued with networking/server issues. Despite all of that I'd like to do my due diligence and make sure my personal configuration isn't causing any issues.

I currently have Xfinity Technicolor CGM4140COM. It seems to have 'done the job' thus far, but I'm suspicious of the quality of my service. I'll likely have to have a tech come out and check everything, but I would like to purchase my own devices to eliminate that possibility now and for the future.

Also, do I only need to purchase a router and have my currently device in bridge mode? Or would it be better to purchase my own modem and router and return the device provided for me?

I have 2 gaming PCs which I prefer to have connected via hardwire and several devices that use Wifi such as Chromecasts if that impacts the purchase recommendation at all.

Sorry for the common question, but I tried searching for router/modem recommendations on this sub for my use case, but it's just a bunch of threads of people talking about how 'gamer' is a marketing scheme rather than giving the OPs helpful advice on products that would help them in gaming.

Hi everyone I just moved in a new flat and unfortunately I'm not able to directly plug my pc in my router is is just too far. Im currently paying a 1gbs network from my provider (hyperoptic UK) but I'm far from that speed, i get about 7mbps with my power-line adapter (devolo magic 1 lan) wich is not great.

My current solution i was thinking of was to get a wifi 6 mesh system ( amplifi alien )but i would prefer a wired connection, please let me know if you have any other solutions to my problem! Thanks a lot for your responses!

It shows "No Internet" in the network screen. But when I use it in the morning and afternoon I can connect and use it with no issues. Any help? Having problems to setup port forwarding rules

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 04:43 PM PDT

Hello to all redditors! Not a native English speaker so pardon me if there's any English error! Recently I have encountered some packet loss issue on Apex Legends and I contacted with EA Help and they wanted me to open some ports in order to fix the issue. No big deal for me to setup some port forwarding rules but the new machine that my ISP provided to me is not very user friendly. Normally we can set the rules by giving it a External IP address with External Port Range and a Internal IP address Internal Port Range aaaaaand its done. But this machine I can only give him a specific Internal Port Number. No big deal if I'm just setting a Minecraft server with single port 25565 but the port range that Apex Legend needed is kinda long which mean I have to manually set the rules for every ports that is needed and that will take a lot of time. I'm wondering if there's any easy way to do set the rules.

Port that Apex Legends needed: https://help.ea.com/in/help/faq/opening-tcp-or-udp-ports-for-connection-issues/

Best Setup for My One Bedroom Apartment

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 04:09 PM PDT

I am moving into a one bedroom apartment Saturday and lost my old router from a move about a year ago. I'm a recent Computer Tech grad so I understand the terminology, but I've noticed on job interviews I can only explain the definitions of routers, switches, modems, and OSI. I can never provide as much detail on the networking practical side as I would like other then plugging in cables and connecting to 192.168.1.1 and would love to take this opportunity to learn more.

I have two devices, 100mbps internet(will switch to 400 after buying 4k monitor soon)

Here's my old modem that I still have: https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-SB6141-DOCSIS-Cable/dp/B00AJHDZSIProbably will upgrade this when moving to 400mbps internet

I was thinking of this router: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08KJF5BS7/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1Reviews say it's compatible with Spectrum and is more than fast enough (also WPA3)

Would a switch be necessary for only plugging in two devices to ethernet?Should I buy a WAP for a one bedroom apartment since it's only one very small floor I'm on (685sqft)?Let me know of anything else you can think of please!

    Dlink AC-2600 giving disappointed speeds....?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 04:04 PM PDT

We're using Fizz (Videotron) here in Canada and it comes with a modem with a built in router. The signal is bad so we got a dlink ac-2600 router. Signal got a bit better but the speed we are getting is terrible (like 15-20mbps when we're paying for 120mpbs). When I'm standing right next to it I'm getting 40... when i switch to modem network i get 100-120. Why is it so bad??

    Second Router with Fios

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 03:16 PM PDT

My current setup is FIOS with an EX8000 extender. I would like to set up a second router for half of the house that gets poor signal. I was able to use a MOCA router to get signal from my router to the distant area of the house I want.

I tried to directly connect from my FIOS router to a Nighthawk AX3000. That has caused a lot of problems. When I tried to use the new router it would only connect to google (no other sites). I disconnected the new router a day later, but now even the original wifi network seems spotty.

How do I set it up properly with a second router, and did I screw up my FIOS router permanently? I think I need to covert my FIOS router to AP mode to use the second router, but could I then get 2 Netgear routers? Or use the FIOS router properly and the Netgear router?

    Novice here.

But when I did a speed test on my phone, it was perfectly fine. When I checked my wifi status on control panel on my computer it is showing 10 mbs upload and 600 mbs down.

    Advice on hardwiring a pc

    Posted: 17 Jul 2021 02:54 PM PDT

So I'm wondering what the best way is to connect a hard wired connection to my PC. I have fiber with a modem/router combo in the living room, and I'm using a powerline adapter to connect hardwired but the powerline adapter handicaps my connection too much to be useful.

I am paying for a gigabit plan so what is the best way I can hardwire a connection to my room that doesn't require going directly to the modem with the same if not minuscule amount of loss in speed?

    Thanks in advance.
