Google Duo - Workaround for kids or people without a cell number

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 03:35 PM PDT

I have young kids who don't have cell phones and I wanted to get them Duo accounts to use with our Nest Hub Max. While I believe it is now possible to set up a Duo account without linking a cell number if you set up the account using an Android tablet, we don't have one of those. A super simple workaround I found by chance is to simply use your own cell number when setting up their accounts. You will get the verification code and you can complete the account setup (note this will remove your cell number from your own Duo account). If you need to link their Duo account to a smart speaker or display, do that as well. Then, go back to your own Duo account and re-add your phone number. This will pull it from the kids' accounts and reconnect it with your own account. However their Duo accounts, now tied only to their email addresses, will continue to function and be searchable.

Hope this is helpful to some people.

    Are Chinese phones untrustworthy?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 11:35 AM PDT

A news article came out in my country (Belgium) about our version of the NSA warning people that Chinese phones might be used for espionage.
It also says that no actual evidence of espionage has been found so far.

Should government officials or corporations stay away from using brands like Oppo, OnePlus or Huawei? How does data collection from Chinese companies differ from say Google or Apple?

Phones displays are getting too tall and narrow?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 08:20 AM PDT

I couldn't find any discussion on this topic and wanted to make a post to see if I was the off one out or if others had similar views.

I used to have a Xiaomi Mi Max 3 which was perfect for watching YouTube, the video took up the entire 6.9 inch screen.

I was looking for an upgrade and all the new phones a stupidly tall and narrow at aspect ratios around 21:9...

Surely watching YouTube as an use case take precedence over watching movies on Netflix?

Now when I watch YouTube on the new phone there are massive black bars on the left and right, a waste of screen space. I can't understand why anyone would watch movies on a tiny smartphone in the first place, even if it is 21:9, it's hardly a cinematic experience..
