This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I was gonna go buy a pre-built with a 3070 but they had a 3070 in stock (MSRP $600) so I just built the PC myself for less!

    AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

    Crucial Ballistix 2x8 DDR4 3600

    1TB NVME M.2 SSD

    2TB Seagate Barracuda HDD

    Kraken X63 Liquid Cooler

    Seasonic Focus GX-750

    64GB Flash Drive :)

Grand total of $1,800. How did I do?

I was able to mount the radiator in the front to pull in cool air across it. Haven't gamed hard on it yet cause I'm in the middle of Fallout 4 on PS5, but im mining 61MH/s clocked at 46°C with hot spot at only 68°C. Ambient temp 31°C. I wasn't planning on building a mining rig but, hey, might as well until they switch to PoS since I'm not using it yet.

My only issue is I think the PC is too good for me. I got a solid deal with prices these days, but I won't do anything that uses even 1/4 the amount of power this sucker has.

    Ryzen 3600 or Intel 10400F

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 10:07 AM PDT

I finally have the money to upgrade from my FX-6300 PC and I'm faced with a rather difficult choice between AMD and Intel. Before I list out the parts, I should mention that the 5600X in my country costs as much as a 3700x and the intel 11400 has not been launched here.

Both AMD and Intel builds cost the same and I believe they are equal performance.

    AMD Build:

CPU: Ryzen 3600 Mobo: Gigabyte B450 Aorus Elite V2 RAM: 8GBx2 3200 mHz

    Intel Build:

CPU: Intel 10400F Mobo: ASUS TUF B560M-Plus RAM: 8GBx2 3200 mHz

This will be paired with a 550W PSU and a GTX 1650 Super. I'm planning on upgrading the GPU later to maybe a 3060 or 6600 whenever they're back at affordable levels.

Your suggestions will be really helpful as I'm looking to get the most out of money. Also does it make sense to wait for the next gen AMD platform and processors that will be launched by next year, I think?

Where can I buy components in the UK?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 10:57 AM PDT

Planning on building a PC at some point (not particularly soon, just when I have the money), and I was wondering where I can go to buy parts. I don't want to get everything online if I have the option of going to a physical store - just seems safer and more trustworthy, as I can check the box for damage and it won't get damaged in shipping.

I hear about places like Microcenter on here, but that's US-only, and I don't know of any stores near me that sell PC parts, except maybe for Currys, and I'm not sure I trust them. Anyone know of anything?

Please Help... all I want is a working computer

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:30 PM PDT

Short Summary: For 2+ years I've been using a broken computer, where it glitches constantly. Originally I had a nice computer with i7 4790k, gtx 980. I ran into power problems.

Bought a new PSU(new nice gold EVGA 750W modular).

    Still didn't fix it.

Bought a new Mobo(Asus Maximus VI or something).

    Bought a new GPU(GTX 980ti).

    Bought a new CPU(Intel G2 something).

Bought a new SSD(WD blue NVME 1 TB).

    Bought new Ram.

Last year or so I've been running completely without a GPU, and with my shitty replacement CPU. Still, even when I play SC2 it "glitches" every 5 minutes or so... screen stops, like it's lag. Sometimes Graphics Driver will crash.

I've taken it to 3 computer repair shops... none fixed it, although they all told me to buy parts(which didn't fix it).

So I'm hundreds of dollars in the hole. I have $0 to spend. And I can't even play the most basic video game on 720p without it glitching constantly.

I gave up for last 6 months because it's so infuriating that I spent the last dollar I had trying to fix this machine.

6 months later, I'm going to try to fix it again. I have no clue what to do as I've already done everything in my power. If anybody has any help, please advise. Even typing this though, my blood pressure is raging, so I doubt I am actually going to be able to fix it. More likely to smash it with a hammer at this point.

Is rtx 2060 or gtx 1080 enough for 1080p gaming?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 01:28 PM PDT

I want to enjoy playing new games and I am wondering if I need to pay so much more with nowadays prices for better gpu's like 1080ti, or 2070super if I only play 1080p resolution for a couple more years before upgrading to 1440p? Thanks

Computer Locking Up - Possibly PSU?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 04:35 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I recently made some upgrades to my computer and since the upgrade, I've been having random locks happening. When my computer locks up, nothing responds anymore including the num lock key, and the computer stays frozen until I do a forced power off with the power button. The locks have MOSTLY happened under heavy load (playing a game, etc) but has also happened while doing absolutely nothing except watching Twitch. Pretty sure my PSU is my oldest part but just want to see if anyone has other advice, already planning on replacing it but want to get ahead of the issue if that's not the problem.

I also checked out Event Viewer and wasn't really able to track down any source of the issue in there. I ran a memchek test, checked drive health with CrystalDiskInfo, ran a GPU and CPU benchmark, all of it came back clean without any failures. The only time it failed during a benchmark was while I had Streamlabs OBS open recording the benchmark. I seem to be able to force the lock when I record using Streamlabs OBS, but I assume it's just because it's pushing my hardware and not the actual software since I've had locks while not using it.

    Specs:

    OS: Windows 10 Pro

RAM: 32 GB of CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 2400MHz

    GPU: RTX 2060

    CPU: Intel i5-9600k

    Motherboard: ASUS Z390A Prime

Drives: 1TB Sata SSD (OS drive), and 2 mechanical drives (3 tb and 1tb) which all were purchased within the last year

PSU: EVGA Supernova 750 B2 (this is so old and I hadn't even realized it)

My overall wattage requirements should have dropped after the part swap, but I've still got a gut feeling it might be that, but I'd love to hear any suggestions. Also this was happening before a Windows reformat, and after, I'm currently on a mostly clean Windows install

GPU REALLY hot (90C) at 100% Fan Speed...any ideas?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 07:39 AM PDT

Alright so for awhile now my Zotac GTX 1080 Ti Amp has been running at 90C while on load

I have tried: * Repasting with Arctic mx-4. Temps dropped by arnd 3-7 avg but somehow it still manages to climb back up to 90C after awhile * Removing my pc case glass panel while gaming. Temps didnt drop noticably so I don't think it's an airflow issue? * Cleaning my gpu fans and case fans (didnt use compress air, though just did a quick look around and i dont see any huge bundles of dust around heatsinks). Didnt help too * Underclocking my gpu. Didnt really help either, the temps actually went up by abit tbh * Reinstalling/rolling back drivers. Didnt work * Set fan curve to 100% in msi afterburner. Temps still went up to 90C

My card runs at 100% load with temps averaging around 87-90C on 4K mid settings red dead redemption 2. When not gaming, it sits around 44C average. It runs like that even at stock clocks or while underclocked.

My case currently has 3 intake and 3 exhaust fans. CPU runs at around 60C when gaming.

I'm thinking of getting a gpu water cooling system too, but I don't know if it will make a drastic difference to temps yet and would prefer not to spend an extra amount on it until absolutely necessary.

The card is also a bit unstable during gaming but I'm pretty sure that's due to it running at high temps for long periods of time and hopefully it will be solved when my temp issue is solved too

Does anyone have any idea why my gpu runs so hot? 70-80C during gaming is pretty reasonable but 90C is pushing it imo

Wanted to know if theres something better I can do in terms of pricing. Also I will be buying it slowly and I wanted to know whats better to get first, I was thinkin CPU because I don't want them to stop making it and miss out on that.

I won't do any heavy gaming, 1080p LoL and CS:GO. I have a 750ti to reuse until this GPU thing normalizes, want to get a 570, 580 or 1660.

Hello fellas. I've just reset my Windows and apparently, Windows didn't download Realtek Audio drivers, at least I couldn't see it. Should I consider downloading them manually? I'm not experiencing any problems right now. Music plays fine, everything seems cool. I want a clean build so I don't want to download unnecessary things. Might use some help. Cheers.

    Finally built a gaming PC!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:12 PM PDT

    https://i.ibb.co/DK5CvXd/IMG-1766.jpg

    https://i.ibb.co/KNhhPcC/IMG-1771.jpg

After years of wanting to, I finally had the money and have managed to build myself a gaming pc. I have been using an old laptop for years that couldn't play newer games, and even struggled on old games, but now I can finally play what I want :)

    SPECS:

    CPU: Ryzen 7 5800x

CPU Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 240

GPU: Gigabyte Radeon RX 6800 XT GAMING 16GB OC GPU

RAM: 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3600

    Case: Corsair 4000d airflow black

Motherboard: MSI MPG b550 Gaming Edge Wifi

Primary storage: 1TB Corsair MP600 PCIe v4 NVMe

    Secondary storage: 2TB Seagate Barracuda

    PSU: Corsair RM750

    Peripherals:

Primary monitor: 27" Samsung Odyssey G5 1440p 144hz curved gaming monitor

Secondary monitor: Corprit 15.6 Inch Portable Monitor 1920×1080

Keyboard: HyperX Alloy Origins RGB Gaming Mechanical Keyboard

Mouse: VicTsing Gaming Mouse (this is an old mouse that I bought for my laptop before)

    Hardest part of building it:

The main problem that I had building the PC was cable management and routing cables (even now the cable management could be a lot better). I'll probably re-do the cable management at some point in the near future.

I also struggled to get the RAM in. You really need to push it hard; I was scared that pushing it in too hard would damage the motherboard but I underestimated how sturdy motherboards actually are.

Bad advice given to me beforehand:

Before I had all my parts, a lot of people told me to watch youtube videos and read guides about building a PC, so I was all ready for when I had all the parts. I think that this advice made me worse off. All watching youtube videos and reading guides before did was confuse me and make the whole process seem harder than it was and make me scared that I would do something wrong.

All the parts came with a good manual on how to put them together. And these manuals were a lot more helpful than any youtube video or online guide was. The online guides made me believe that there was a certain way of doing things and fear-mongered me into believing that I had to do it that way. This is incorrect and the manuals allowed me to do things in the easiest way for me while following the manual designed for that specific part so I knew the information is correct and applicable. Trying to wipe the youtube videos and online guides from my mind and just use the manuals was the best thing I did and made the process a lot easier.

    Best part of building it:

The best part of building it was the end when I finally pressed the on switch and it came on. I ran into no problems and everything worked first time which really surprised me considering how paranoid I had been the whole time that I had messed something up!

What would I do different next time:

If I was to build it again, I would put the atx power cable into position earlier on. I put it in really late on and lots of the other parts and cables were blocking it and that made it hard for me to route the large atx power cable through the case.

    RTX 2080Super - 495€

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 02:09 PM PDT

    Hello fellow Redditors,

I just order a Kfa 2 RTX 2080 Super for 495€ in Amazon (ger).

The seller/business has 84% positiv reviews and i can pay via invoice. The business itself is from Germany so it seems to good to be true.

The seller itself has some 2070, 2080 for the same price in stock (1-3 cards).

The card itself is marked as "used, brand new"

Is there something I need to take care of? Any tests I should do besides, if the card is clean or screws are missing?

    Thanks in advance!

Edit: is 495€ even good or did I pay to much? Could I go with something better the same price?

    VR recommendations.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 12:42 PM PDT

I was wondering if anyone had some first hand experience with all of the different vr platforms out there. My son has been asking for one since they came out and his bday is coming up. I see the new oculus is at a 399 price point and was wondering if worth it....and if facebook is going to map his little brain and make tiny lil terminators just to sell me handbags my wife looked at one time because she was bored and used my phone for 10 minutes. I googled it but would like some first hand experience.

My computer is a beast and his is a i5, 16 gb ram, 1080. Also does he need a helmet when he tries it out and flings himself out the 2nd story window thinking he is getting eaten by a minecraft pig?

    Mixing different sized ram sticks

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 11:41 AM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Gaming/dev work

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    Doesn't matter

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $0

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Existing build with 2x16gb ram, i9

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I currently have a machine with 2x16gb ram sticks. I can get my hands on 2x4gb sticks (for free). Should I bother putting this in my machine as well or will the different ram size impact performance somehow?

The increase of size won't matter much to me but I'm just worried adding it for the sake of doing so would make things worse for me.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 01:27 PM PDT

Just finished my build. I immediately noticed that, upon clicking power, it wouldn't turn on.

I went through the typical steps, re-seating, etc.

    No dice.

I gave up and went and had lunch, came back, did nothing, pressed power, and it turned on. Hooray.

Turned off PC, today is now the next day, and now it wont power again. No fans spin, no leds, nothing except a green light on the motherboard letting me know power is getting to it.

I've done a few things, like swap the power button to the reset button, which caused the PC to suddenly start working again, but then once shutting it off, wouldn't work a second time - again.

I can't figure this out. It seems like everything is getting power and works correctly, I just can seem to complete the circuit to tell it to go ON consistently.

I've tried just touching the pins with the tip of my screwdriver, but that doesn't seem to do anything either...

Thanks for anyone's ideas. This is really frustrating.

Update: I unplugged nothing, turned the PC on it's side, clicked power, and it started. Wild. What do people think? Some sort of short or something....? How would I even fix this?

    GPU upgrade

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 11:53 AM PDT

So I have recently purchased a PC and have upgraded it, however the GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and I'm not sure if I need to upgrade it or not, to my knowledge it is a good/decent GPU and as we all know the current market for this type of upgrade is in a weird place however I don't mind browsing what my options are for the foreseeable future.

Any help is appreciated, Thank you in advance
