if you have to "request" the source code of an "open source" software, is it open source?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 05:18 AM PDT

question, if you have to "request" the source code of an "open source" software, is it open source?

i don't think it is, i think that open source must be publicly available, and must be viewable by the public and not under request, but idk what do you guys think?

If I start a program from the terminal, e.g. vlc, chromium, mpv and I close that terminal, why does it also close the program I started or rather why is the program running bound to that terminal? Why can't the application be opened as if I clicked it from the GUI.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 11:59 AM PDT

I understand that it might be a sort of WYSIWYG approach? I mean if a user started a program from the terminal when they could have just clicked the icon... clearly there's some information they'd want to be seeing that they can maybe only view in the terminal?

By now I realize I've asked 3/4 questions, final one... whatever the case being... would an option to close the terminal soon as the program opens after which it was started from said terminal be possible or it breaks some philosophy?

I have never used Linux and want to give it a try. What distributiom do you recommend me?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 11:17 AM PDT

I use Windows 10 and always had used windows, I kept listening good things about Linux, love the idea of open-source (programs, apps, etc) and want to see if I would like linux in my day by day.

If this is important, I'm not a complete begginer in computer usage nor programming language as I am a computer engineer student in college, but still, I would prefer a intuitive interface to use.

    Thanks in advance.

How can I remap the caps-lock to only turn on if the key is pressed twice?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 12:19 PM PDT

Maybe via XKB or xmodmap (or something similar for wayland)?

How I have it working in Windows with AutoHotkey:

    • capslock only turns on if the key is tapped twice in a row (within ~ 0.5 seconds of each other)
    • a single tap of the key will turn it off
    • if the capslock key is held it works like shift (capitalizing what is typed while held, and not capitalizing after released)

Here is the AHK script for reference:

#NoEnv ; Recommended for performance and compatibility with future AutoHotkey releases. ; #Warn ; Enable warnings to assist with detecting common errors. SendMode Input ; Recommended for new scripts due to its superior speed and reliability. SetWorkingDir %A_ScriptDir% ; Ensures a consistent starting directory. CapsLock:: if A_PriorHotkey = CapsLock { if A_TimeSincePriorHotkey < 500 { SetCapsLockState, on return } } SetCapsLockState, on keywait, CapsLock SetCapsLockState, OFF return

Any resources/tutorials for dual booting two linux distros?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 12:49 PM PDT

My recent Fedora upgrade broke my Nvidia drivers and won't boot up. I'm going to try out Pop!_OS as my daily driver, it has a separate fork just for nvidia, and I like the stability compared to a rolling release like Fedora. However, I just finally got a decent music setup working with the addition of pipewire to Fedora, so I want to be able to have access to it on the fly. I'm not interested in dual booting with Windows, I have a W10 installation on a separate disk and I just flip the switch in bios if I really need to access it.

I checked out this post about a guy who multibooted five distros, but his technique depends on using a boot manager named ReFind, is five years old, and is disputed by the only comment on his article (and the author seems to agree). I couldn't find much else that revolved around a linux-only dual boot, even after searching both this sub and /r/linux.

Does anybody have any tips or tricks for setting up a linux dual boot? Do I have to manually edit a GRUB file or anything? With BRTFS, will different linux installations share a /home folder by default? (that might sound like a crazy idea, it sure does to me, but I think I read that somewhere, but I might not have understood it correctly)

Any tips, tricks, articles, insights, experiences that anybody has: please let me know, I'm kind of going in blind here

Trouble with gImageReader (Tesseract) - Exporting to PDF (Linux Mint)

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 12:20 PM PDT

I've been using gImageReader for a few years and I've always used it to export the OCR'ed text as an invisible text layer over the existing pdf scan, resulting in a searchable pdf file, which is useful for research, working with the text etc.

I was doing this on Windows 10, and recently installed a dual boot with Linux Mint and reinstalled Windows due to slow-down. Now I reinstalled gImageReader and I can no longer find the option to export to PDF with text layer. In fact I'm having trouble even finding much mention of said function online. I don't know if I originally installed some fork or beta or what, but the way the (probably) official version of the program looks is not what I'd been using so far.

I was always able to set certain post-production parameters, such as size of the invisible text etc.

Any ideas where I could find that version again? I'd prefer a Linux Mint compatible version, but Windows would also be fine, if that's the only one.
    Thanks!

New AMD CPU feels sluggish compaired to old Intel?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 07:14 AM PDT

So the other day I got a new Motherboard, DDR4 Ram, and an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 CPU with a nice beefy aftermarket cooler. I booted up Pop!_OS and... everything feels extremely sluggish to load. Firefox takes longer to open, GIMP doesn't always load fully, etc.

My old CPU was an Intel i5-4690K with DDR3 RAM, so this new CPU SHOULD be faster in every single way.

Neither CPU is/was overclocked, Intel CPU only had the stock cooler.

AMD seems fine, lscpu shows it idle at 2.2GHz which is apprently normal as its ramps up once more power is needed. Do I need to overclock it?

    Am I using Pipewire wrong?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 12:01 PM PDT

I have been playing for some months with the idea to fully replace Pulseaudio with Pipewire-pulse, as it seems to almost be a no-sweat replacement. But when trying to run any pactl load-module command, it fails. Using pw-cli works but that then means I guess I have to also use pw-link to manually in the command line link every input and output instead of using the Pavucontrol GUI, which is what I normally use with Pulse to reroute audio during calls to be able to share desktop audio and mic. I could be wrong but there is no way I can tell.

According to the wiki, the module-null-sink and module-loopback should be compatible but just fail when being given as a pactl command. When given as the pw-cli alternative it works but nothing shows in Pavucontrol, only within Pipewire's listing in the shell.

I was excited to hear that the Pipewire team had implemented the module-combine-sink which was the last puzzle piece missing in my script to make it, however I have no idea how to make it work. This is my setup for Pulse:

    #!/bin/zsh pactl load-module module-combine-sink sink_name=combine && echo "Combine created." pactl load-module module-null-sink sink_name=Nully; pactl load-module module-loopback sink=Nully; pactl load-module module-loopback sink=Nully; echo "All done, Nully created."

All modules fail when given like this, which according to the wiki should work, except the module-combine-sink which is not yet supported natively, so I was just wondering if at the current time, is there any way to emulate this setup with Pipewire, and be able to use it as usual with Pavucontrol? Or is there a practical guide on how to use pw-link or automate it within the same script?

Ubuntu grub files in windows, wtf?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 07:58 AM PDT

I have PopOS! and Windows 10 dualboot, but for some reason there is a folder in the Windows EFI partition called "ubuntu". It was probably generated after I booted ubuntu in live mode, but I DIDN'T INSTALL IT!

Can I delete it without breaking everything? I'm insecure because since PopOS! is based on ubuntu...

    (I use systemd btw)

Why am I always missing space on "/"

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 09:24 AM PDT

So I separated my /home on a different partition, leaving 30Gb for / (the tutorial I read mentioned 20Gb, so I took some leeway)

After 2 year, I find that my root partition is full, so I removed all latex doc (~5gb) and grow the partition to 40Gb

And now one year later a already have to grow the partition again because there is only 3Gb available. I don't remember folder size after install...

Is it normal for the root partition (excluding /home) to get this big ?

    -----------------------------------------

Here is the size of the biggest folders :

    / 37Gb

    /usr 25.5Gb

    /usr/lib 13Gb

    /usr/lib/x68_64-linux-gnu 5,6Gb

    /usr/lib/modules 1,2Gb

    /usr/share 9.8Gb

    /usr/share/doc 2,6Gb

    /var 4,8Gb

    /opt 3,8Gb

Edit : Running linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon, using apt for packages. The result of the command wajig large can be found here https://pastebin.com/ejNbwUWf. The sum of all packages is 22.5Gb, so half of the partition. If base Mint 20 install is 3Gb (I'm absolutely not sure of this number, the iso is 2Gb), I'm still looking for an extra 17Gb

Edit 2: To take a really precise example : /usr/lib/x68_64-linux-gnu is 5,6Gb. It contains wine-development (400mb), and I know what it is. Then come some cryptic libraries libnvgraph_static.a, libcusolver.so.10.2.0.243 and many other at <100Mb, and 1700 items in total. So no enormous files really stand out to explain the 5Gb.

I already posted this in linux mint but figured might get more help here. But my comp after being updated started giving me problems. And I wanted to switch to linux already but lost my thumb drive. Will switching help?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 09:20 AM PDT

I was going to switch over when I came back from vaca, but lost my thumb drive. Now after updating my drivers, I got an alien looking face blinking across my computers display. They flash red, blue and green. Then it adjusts my display settings on me, and it keeps happening. I tried pulling out the video card, blowing on it like a cartridge, and putting it back in. And am not sure if it fixed it yet. So my question is if I finish switching to linux mint will it go back to normal?

    How to change ^ behavior?

    Operating system is Linux Mint.

    Turbo Boost

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 09:07 AM PDT

I just upgraded the cpu in my old Laptop that i'm using as a game-server. The new CPU is an i5 3320M which should have a Turbo-Frequency of 3.30 GHz. I used

    watch -n.1 "grep \"^[c]pu MHz\" /proc/cpuinfo"

while I stresstested my cpu but it was showing a maximum Frequency of 3092.915 MHz (it was very steady under load), which is more than the baseclock of 2,60 GHz but less than the advertised Turbo. I don't think it was thermal throtteling because it was the same frequency since the beginning, when the cpu was still cold.

Is there any way to get the Frequency higher?

Dual boot - deleting Linux partition from a drive and installing it in another

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 11:29 AM PDT

I have a 1TB SSD with Windows 10 and Linux Mint dual booting. I got a new 480GB SSD in the mail today and I'd like to, basically, move my Mint system to it fully and give the space it's currently occupying back to Windows (which isn't much, just 40GB).

I don't really have anything of value in the current Mint partition, so backing it up isn't really necessary. I was mainly using it as a backup option in case Windows started having issues, but since I found myself booting into it more and more, I figured moving it to a different drive would be far better, not to mention I'd even be able to back up files I have in the Windows drive into the new Linux one, anyway.

Would it be safe to just use gparted from a Mint live USB, delete the Linux partition from the shared drive, assign the free space to Windows, and then install Mint on the second SSD? Is there anything I should watch out for?

Tweaks and software to further tweak battery life on a laptop under Ubuntu 20.04 with tlp already installed

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 11:22 AM PDT

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 5515 Ryzen 5 5500u which I got only yesterday. I did a full drain battery test today and I was only able to get around 5 to 5.5 hours of battery life on low to moderate usage (firefox, youtube, discord call, google meet and reddit browsing). I already have TLP installed and the cpufreq info tells me this:

current policy: frequency should be within 1.40 GHz and 2.10 GHz.

    cpufreq stats: 2.10 GHz:19.86%, 1.70 GHz:35.45%, 1.40 GHz:44.69% (538882)

Are there any more things I can do to squeeze more battery life? disabling hyperthreading and maybe disabling some cores? Thanks in advance.

Why does this bash command work?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 11:17 AM PDT

    ./std.py 1> file.txt 2>&1

However, since bash reads left to right, I'm confused why the command above works and not this:

    ./std.py 2>&1 1> file.txt

    Will Ubuntu erase my data?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2021 10:02 AM PDT

    Hey.

I am installing Ubuntu (16.04 for a reason). I have reached the point where Ubuntu says it will change the partition table of my hard drive. Will the change erase my disk? After the table change, will the drive become non bootable?

I have Windows 10 already. And I have three partitions:

    Windows system reserve

    Main windows partition

An ext4 partition I created for Ubuntu (~214.85 GB)

So, even the unallocated space at the end was part of the ext4. (Ubuntu made the free space)

Can I go ahead and click continue and will my data /boot be destroyed?

    Thank you.
