    If Sun Valley gets released as Windows 11, will it be a free upgrade for all Windows 10 users (assuming the device has reasonable specs)?

    Is Windows lagging behind Linux in terms of automation and efficiency?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:21 PM PDT

    Do you agree with this personal observation?:

    Automation is primarily used by DevOps using Linux. DevOps are close to software development often focussing on the software created by their employers. Usually, they have created their own modern infrastructure perfectly fitting their needs.

    But there is still an uncountable number of traditional sysadmins that maintain third-party software on any kind of infrastructure from outdated to modern, cloud-based, and on-premise, Linux, Windows, and Unix veterans.

    I'm feeling the latter is not using automation a lot. Is there nothing to automate? Or is it the lack of appropriate tools and software that prevents the widespread use of automation?

    Sysadmins deal with different operating systems and they often must maintain the desktop PCs of the companies as well.

    In my opinion, Ansible and Salt are not the perfect tools for them.

    Ansible is easy to learn, but it's focused on Linux. Their WinRM-approach is not user-friendly. The absence of an agent makes it hard to manage systems located on different networks where direct access often is forbidden.

    Salt has excellent Windows support and with the agent – the salt-minion – managing clients on different networks is a walkover.

    But Salt – minion and master – it is anything but lightweight software.

    While both offer a web UI – still chargeable for Salt – the UI doesn't help to get started. The learning phase starts on the command line. If Windows is a big part of your job and experience, you don't feel served adequately.

    Certainly, there are pure Windows-based solutions to automate the management of Windows domains. System Center and many third-party tools can be used. However, most of them require an Active Directory and direct access to the managed clients. Linux is left out. The learning curve is steep, and the solutions are expensive.

    Last but not least, good old Sysadmins need fast and comfortable access to machines to fix problems and execute tasks manually. The success of TeamViewer confirms that the demand for remote access is not decreasing. Not all problems can be solved with automation.

    Is there a demand for software that makes automation and manual machine management easy and efficient at the same time?

    • Easy to learn. Your first starting point is an intuitive user interface. Yet, a command-line interface and an HTTP API are available too.
    • All operating systems are treated equally. Linux, Windows, AIX, no OS is a second-class passenger.
    • Based on a client that makes machines accessible and manageable behind NAT and on different networks.
    • Dependency-free binaries for all operating systems. Golang instead of Python.
    • Powerful scripting and automation options, comparable to Ansible playbooks and Salt states.
    • Built-in file server to manage distributable files.
    • Provides access to all kinds of remote login methods (SSH, RDP, VNC, etc.) without a VPN, jump hosts, and SSH chains. As comfortable as TeamViewer, but without a black-box cloud in the background.

    Open-source and easy to install.

    Question about the product key

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 06:11 PM PDT

    I have a pc that came with Windows 8.1 SL (OEM). After some time I upgraded to Windows 10 (without fresh installment).

    Now I want to downgrade to 8.1. Where can I find the product key? Is it the same key with both versions? Will my current key work with a fresh 8.1 installation?

    Thanks

    Just interested, why 'Windows' folder is made accessible and removable by a user?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 06:10 PM PDT

    So, this question just comes from curiosity, even though I have some experience in web development and programming in general, I still ask stupid questions, and knowing little about some things I wonder why they are created that way.

    So, I'm really interested in knowing why developers created 'Windows' folder just like any regular folder where there are contents in it, like files, other folders and such, and you basically can delete almost anything and mess everything up badly it's not even hidden.

    What is the reasoning behind this? Since it looks like it is made like that almost from the very beginning, aren't there any reliable methods to isolate something like that so a regular user can't do much harm to it, except when using UI and dedicated tools to do something? I'm quite surprised this kind of question wasn't asked before, maybe because it's stupid. Although I see some questions like: "What will happen if I delete Windows folder".

    My reasoning would be that since you have an access to your PC so it means you own that PC and there's little to no benefit if 'Windows' folder is accessible to you or not, but I'm not sure if this is even valid reason. So it looks like it's pretty much simple to mess things up for someone if you have an access to someone's computer even for just 30 seconds.

    I would like to install windows 10 on a Linux distribution. (Pop os). It will not let me add the windows iso to the usb. It actually says windows iso are not supported. Is it possible to flash my current os back to windows 10.

    How do I make some files easier to search for (in the search bar)?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 10:06 AM PDT

    Say, I have a collection of pdfs, like python_basics_cheatsheet, javascript_basics_cheatsheet, javascript_react_cheatsheet, vscode_keyboard_shortcuts, etc. Now, I want to find vscode_keyboard_shortcuts.pdf by typing something like "vscode shortcuts" but not the exact name.

    An idea is to add some keywords like "visual studio", "keyboard", "hotkey", "shortcut", "sheet", etc. to the metadata so the file can be matched by any of the keywords. How do I do this? Thanks.

    Absolutely newbie on Powershell

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 11:02 PM PDT

    Update: Solved, did not get that I had to call the function Remove-ACL from within the script body.

    Pardon my ignorance, but I am a complete newbie to powershell, but I have an urgent need to reset some ACL's on a filesystem. Found this script on Stackoverflow, and saved it on the Windows FS. But when I open Powershell (as administrator on Win 10) and runs the script, absolutely nothing happens. I started with allowing scripts (set-executionpolicy unrestricted since I got a warning). Anyone?

    The command

    .\Remove-ACL G:\Folder -Verbose -Recurse

    The output

    Nada, and no ACL's are modified.

    The script (remove-acl.ps1)

    Function Remove-ACL {

    [CmdletBinding(SupportsShouldProcess=$True)]

    Param(

    [parameter(Mandatory=$true,ValueFromPipeline=$true,Position=0)]

    [ValidateNotNullOrEmpty()]

    [ValidateScript({Test-Path $_ -PathType Container})]

    [String[]]$Folder,

    [Switch]$Recurse

    )

    Process {

    foreach ($f in $Folder) {

    if ($Recurse) {$Folders = $(Get-ChildItem $f -Recurse -Directory).FullName} else {$Folders = $f}

    if ($Folders -ne $null) {

    $Folders | ForEach-Object {

    # Remove inheritance

    $acl = Get-Acl $_

    $acl.SetAccessRuleProtection($true,$true)

    Set-Acl $_ $acl

    # Remove ACL

    $acl = Get-Acl $_

    $acl.Access | %{$acl.RemoveAccessRule($_)} | Out-Null

    # Add local admin

    $permission = "BUILTIN\Administrators","FullControl", "ContainerInherit,ObjectInherit","None","Allow"

    $rule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule $permission

    $acl.SetAccessRule($rule)

    Set-Acl $_ $acl

    Write-Verbose "Remove-HCacl: Inheritance disabled and permissions removed from $_"

    }

    }

    else {

    Write-Verbose "Remove-HCacl: No subfolders found for $f"

    }

    }

    }

    }

    Use pen and touch screen together

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 04:46 AM PDT

    I'm using an Asus Zenbook flip 4 ux461un with its pen and I want to use pen and touch screen simultaneously, it's because of using some program called Tablet Pro which lets me have some keyboard shortcuts on the screen.

    But disabling "Ignore touch input when I'm using my pen" in windows settings or settings its value in the registry didn't work, whenever I use the pen on the screen the touch functionally disables completely.

    I have also updated everything, but it didn't help.

    Any ideas or workarounds?

    Did the Apple Support website just hint Windows 11?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 10:19 PM PDT

    If you can't download or install iCloud for Windows - Apple Support - If you get onto this Apple support article for icloud, you can see the support article referring to "Windows 11" 👀

    https://imgur.com/a/mnwnQ52 - Here is an image if it apple gets it taken down. I've also Wayback Machine archived it too.

    Looks like apple did an oopsie ;)

    Edit - As /u/compguy96 in the comments mentioned, it most likely means iCloud for windows - version 11 and not for Windows 11. Wording can trick ya lol
