Home Networking pulling multiple Ethernet cables through conduit

pulling multiple Ethernet cables through conduit

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 05:37 AM PDT

I am building a network rack in the basement. I just started another project remodeling a bathroom that sits directly above the network rack location. While the walls were open I installed a 1 1/2" conduit from the network rack to the attic. This is a straight conduit with one sweep where it connects to the network rack. I am planning to pull 6-8 Ethernet cables through the conduit for access points, cameras, etc.

Should I tape 8 cables together and pull them through all at once?

    Consistent slow internet speeds

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 08:26 PM PDT

I have been using powerline ethernet for a while and I use my computer every single day for several hours at a time, and just recently I have been experiencing a very slow connection. I found this out when I was playing video games when I reached a consistent 120ms when I usually play at 40ms. I ran internet speed tests multiple times and it showed that it wasn't just the game that was slower, but my internet speed. My phone and other electronic devices aren't experiencing this lag and I was wondering if there was some solution to this.

Would getting a separate AP improve my situation over AT&T fiber gateway/router?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 05:22 PM PDT

I have AT&T gigabit fiber and am forced to use their gateway/router BGW210-700. It works good enough for wired connections (besides not letting you change DNS) but the Wi-Fi is mediocre.

I was looking into buying a Ubiquiti Access Point WiFi 6 Long-Range or Access Point WiFi 6 Professional. But I'm not ready to go all in with a UDM Pro and POE switch at this point. I'd just buy a POE injector for power.

Would this be a notable improvement if the AP still has to be placed in the same location as the AT&T gateway? I'm renting and can't run cabling through the walls or mount an AP on the ceiling.

    Edit

Also do you miss out on my not running the Unifi controller software on a computer? I wouldn't have a Cloud Key or UDM pro, and was hoping to just setup and leave the AP running without the controller.

Need a second Wi-Fi with a second router but I have no access to the first router

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 04:59 PM PDT

So I moved to an apartment complex that has an amazing and consistent internet, the problem is that it is a community wifi that I don't "own", thus far that is fine I even pay cheaper for the speed I get, the problem is that this Wi-Fi doesn't allow my Quest 2 Vr headset connect to my main pc, the app I use to connect it to my pc is called Virtual Desktop and it recommends me using my own router to create my own private network.

I got access to the second router and connected it to the first with an ethernet cable, but it's still identified as the first wifi and I can't change anything about its network, I put in the router's Ipv4 in my browser and it never connects (google chrome, firefox, and internet explorer didn't work).

Update: I got access to the second router IP and changed the Wi-Fi's name, the problem is that when I connected it back to the first modem it started using the first router's name

    Name of this connector

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 08:37 PM PDT

What is the name of this thing http://imgur.com/a/aCaHr0L connected to my shitty router. Actually I am thinking of buying a new router as my current router sucks, it can't even torrent without getting disconnected every 1 minute. So I guess I need to buy a better router which will connect with this, so I want to know the name of the port which connects to it. Also my ISP provided a Landline connection too, which you can connect to my current router that my ISP provided.

Home 10G internet, good router recommendation?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 08:19 PM PDT

I live in a city that offers 10g internet and I haven't found a router that will handle that much speed. Most things I see are for servers.

Does anybody have any good recommendations for what to use? I obviously don't NEED that much speed, but if I'm paying for it I'd like to see it.

    Any help appreciated. Thank you!

Advice on VLAN configuration for home

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 05:15 PM PDT

I managed to configure VLANs using FreshTomato on my Netgear R6400 router. I'm still testing things, but I wanted to get some advice on how many VLANs I should setup and what I should use each one for. Based on what I'm seeing I'm able to establish 4 bridges each with their own subnet range. I'm not sure if this means I'm limited to 4 VLANs, but that's what I'm assuming so far.

If this is the case, I'm thinking about having VLAN1 (br0) be my main network for my personal devices like PCs and cell phone. This would have full access to the rest of the network, router login, and internet. VLAN2 (br1) is one that I've decided to dedicate for my analog camera DVR. I have disabled access from this VLAN to other VLANs. I'm also planning on disabling WAN (internet) access from this VLAN. I'm able to see the DVR from VLAN1, but nothing on VLAN2 can communicate back to VLAN1. I've tested this and it seems to be working. I want VLAN3 (br2) to be my guest network. It will have internet access, but no access to the rest of the network. If I'm able to set it up, I'll also put some firewall rule to prevent users on this network from seeing the router page, but it's not a big deal if I can't do this. I have not setup a fourth VLAN, but my plan is that I'd use this VLAN for IoT devices that require internet. I'd have it setup similar to VLAN2, where I can communicate to VLAN4 from devices on VLAN1, but not the other way around. The main difference is that they would still be able to get internet access.

So that's a summary of what I plan my home network to be like once I get everything running. I've gotten almost everything setup except for figuring out how to block internet to VLAN2 and router login. Does anyone know a firewall rule for doing either of those? Blocking internet to VLAN2 is a requirement.

A few things I was still not sure about. When I first flashed this router with FreshTomato. I noticed that the predefined Netgear guest networks were not bridged to anything. Does this mean that I could create a guest network doing the same thing? Do I actually need virtual SSIDs and LAN ports bridged to anything if I don't plan on giving IP addresses to guest devices?

I also have a printer that I'm not sure where I should put. Would it be okay if I put this on VLAN2 with my camera DVR? Or should I put this on the VLAN4 with my other IoT devices with internet? I would prefer the printer to not get onto the internet, but I don't know the risk of it sitting on the same VLAN as my camera DVR.

Wireless vs wired device newbie question

Anyone here have optimum and experience the need to restart modem everyday around same time to get back up to normal speed?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 08:01 PM PDT

Hi guys, ever since I moved and got optimum I have had this issue. Every night around 10pm my internet dramatically slows down to around 8-10 MBPS. I have 1GB internet service. At this time I check the speed on my eero gateway to see what the modem is feeding it and it shows 8-10 mbps. I found 2 ways to get back to normal speed, either by restarting the modem or by restarting the gateway eero. After the restart the speeds go back to where they should be around 300-500 MBPS wireless. Any ideas what's going on? I set my modem to automatically restart at 2am using one of the smart plugs with the thought that this would help automate the constant daily restart..but it seems like it's not enough.. I have an SB8200 modem, optimum internet, and 3 eero pros all wired. During the slowdown I ran an analyzer app on my phone and what I found interesting was that the "external IP address" filed said n/a. However after i restarted the modem my internet went back up to great speeds and the external IP ADDRESS now showed up with a number

    Netgear Nighthawk R7000 Question

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 07:55 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I was hoping for some insight regarding some recent issues with my router and if it is router issue or my abysmal WiFi.

Long story short, I have the Nighthawk R7000 and am experienced sporadic network disconnecting. I have to reset the router around 3-5 times a week for WiFi dropping for no apparent reason. Additionally, I experience significant networking issues playing most video games (of note, Warzone).

I have all home devices on the 2.4 GHz network, with maybe 1 or 2 devices on the 5 GHz network and plug my Xbox directly into the router. I have microwave internet and my WiFi download speed is around 10 Mbps download, and .70 upload (abysmal I know; I live in the country)

From reading through other posts, it appears that upgrading the firmware resolves that issue. However, I currently have the stock .88 firmware, with no upgrades available on the app.

Im considering trying a new router and then switching to literally any other internet providers (only other options here are satellite) but wanted to receive any input from y'all before I do so.

Thank you for taking the time to help

Should I buy a 4 port fanless mini pc and make a pfsense router

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 12:24 PM PDT

    Hi All,

After struggling with my ISP router modem combo, I put in what I thought was extensive research for not ridiculously priced routers and came out with a CT8 mesh system. But after my initial excitement I am still underwhelmed by performance.

I am toying with getting myself a 4port fanless mini pc that will support pfsense for almost as much again...

Is it worth it - other than the obvious geek fest of fun setting it up?

I would probably not get much benefit (in the short term from the additional ports until I move to my new house that has an internally wired to allow for wired back haul to the upper floors.

    Why else should I bother?

Will the security really be better? Genuinely interested in real world perspectives...

How can I get ethernet working in the different ports of my apartment so I don't have to connect my router like this (see picture)?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 04:05 PM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/rDNdSoL

I moved into a new apartment and had internet enabled remotely. There was this boxy hole in the wall with a bunch of ethernet cables (I'm assuming for different providers). Only one of them works when I plug it into my router.

The thing is, I don't think the router is supposed to be set up like this since the nearest outlet is really far away. There are ethernet ports scattered throughout the apartment but none of them work if I plug my router into them. Is this something I can resolve or would I need someone to come out and take a look?

Can’t access settings on Wireless APs

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 07:21 PM PDT

Thanks for any advice. I am obsessed with "figuring this out". I have a cable modem/WiFi router (Motorola). I installed it in a closet and ran Ethernet cable throughout the house. I added two access points over the years (upstairs and basement). Everything "works" fine but if we get spotty WiFi we have to switch to closer AP. Basically I have three named networks all running on same modem. I was trying to setup a more seamless system, but I can't figure it out. Also regardless of what WiFi I am on when I try to access the setup page it goes to the modem/router. I have genetic passwords on my APs because I can't change them. Anyone know what I am doing wrong. Should I just deal with the three different names?!?

Wifi and wired connection almost same speed. WHY!?!?!?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 07:10 PM PDT

Ok I'm at a loss here. I moved my orbi satellite and got better signal. Was getting 23mbps now I'm getting 32mbps according to my orbi app on my phone. My xbox is hard wired into the satellite and according to that I'm only getting 20.31mbps. And if I'm on wifi with my xbox I'm getting 19.67mbps. I have no idea what's going on or how to fix this. Please help!!!! Thanks.

    TP-Link Omada Controller on Pi

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 12:57 PM PDT

Hi - is anyone here running a decent version of the omada controller on their Pi? Version 4+ specifically. I have been doing everything I can think of to get it working but it seems like between ubuntu, Mongodb, and the controller there is no option.

Was trying with ubuntu 20.04 but I don't think I can get Mongodb 3.2.22 or 3.6 on it..?

Might try ubuntu 16 if no one else has it working.

Edit: went with a supported Ubuntu- 18. And install went well. Have controller 4.2 running.

How to set this up? via VLAN?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 12:55 PM PDT

Hello. I'd like to set up the following...

    • Set up a home lab where security and accessibility are priorities
    • Block the IoT and related devices from "phoning home" (unless I want them to)
    • Be able to manage the network and connected devices (wired and wireless) through my laptop and/or desktop
    • Facilitate ease of use to connect to Wi-Fi (and connect to the Web) for temporary guests and their devices (wireless and/or wired); segment these temporary devices since "they don't live here"

Where would I define the VLAN (in the router/switch/both?)? What firewall rules should be created to enable network management, keep network congestion at bay, and improve overall security, and still be able to access the Web?

Caveat ... Pi-hole is running under a RPi4 as the DNS resolver and ad-blocker for the network.

    Here's the available hardware...

    • OPNsense router
    • UBNT Switch Pro Aggregation
    • UBNT Switch Pro 24-Port POE
    • UBNT AP-HD
    • UBNT Cloud Key Gen2
    • Laptops / desktops / etc.
    • Mobile phones / tablets / etc.
    • NAS
    • P. Hue / G. Home / A. HP Mini / etc.
    • Pi's / Arduinos / etc.

    Thanks for your time.

Need to fill in some gaps in coverage on my first floor

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 11:09 AM PDT

Plans/diagrams can be found here: https://imgur.com/a/Io5P1T2

The long and short of it - I have some portions of my first floor with substantial drops in signal for WiFi, and pulling cable isn't happening. I do, however, have a coax distribution, and was considering MOCA. The cost would be well over what I'd spend just dropping a BeaconHD downstairs though, which would service the kitchen area well (a spot my wife likes to keep her phone and watch stuff, so coverage is of the utmost importance there) though I don't think it will help by the TV (couch surfing).

Areas in red represent about a 2/3 loss in performance, still ok for most uses, but the latency is very noticeable, and when streaming from my media server, problematic. Media server and NAS have four connections a pop (LACP supported by my switch) so none of that is remotely within my worries as a bottleneck, its purely AP coverage.

Downstream frequencies range from 0.23GHz to 0.417GHz, and upstream from 18.4MHz to 32.8MHz, so I am not seeing any issue with MOCA living above 1GHz.

Any thoughts on the options? Better ideas I haven't thought of?

I considered powerline as well, the wiring is fairly new (~10 years old) but it would be going to a separate circuit. While there is a decent chance of the newer stuff working, MOCA seems the better option by far. Only potential issue I see is splitting again at the modem, though they are entirely separated in frequencies. Recommendations on hardware welcome for MOCA as well.

    TIA!

Edited to add: Loss in performance mentioned above was tested with iperf3, not a speedtest.net or fast.com solution. So this is entirely local network performance.

Which router would be best for Gigabit Internet?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 12:41 PM PDT

I live in TN and get gigabit internet through EPB. I had a router for a few years which has finally crapped out. I don't have a ton of knowledge on networking. I found a few options availabe today locally. I wanted feedback on which one might be the best for me. I live in a small apartment <1200 sq feet. I'm not sure which brands currently have a better reputation for reliability or are easier to setup for newbies.

    My options are

    Nighthawk R7450 AC2600

Linksys Max Stream Dual Band AC1750

    TP-Link Archer AX1500
