Proof that my mothers network is compromised or she's crazy...... Posted: 02 Jun 2021 03:08 PM PDT Folks needing some quick help and not sure what other group to turn to appreciate all input and any leads. Quick back story I can't tell you how many phones and laptops and ipads my mother has wasted or locked out of because of all kinds of issues. She kept telling me she is hacked, but this goes deeper its happening because someone who has physical access to her devices or broadband provider (ATT) router at home. I have brushed most of these things off because she does have a lot of issues and I just couldn't believe something like she says is happening. (Its almost conspiracy level stuff, a spouse is cheating their other person is an IT guru hacking all her stuff trying to make her crazy etc etc...a hell of a story) Fast forward she got a new laptop, and it was supposedly "hacked" I have a super busy life with young kids and high pressure job so I can't just drop things to chase down the rabbit hole for her. I told her go to best buy and get it wiped and bring it to me before taking it home. I'm really so tired of this I wanted to set everything up to see if she really is crazy or some deep level exploitation is going on. Long story short she did not bring it to me, and she took it home connected it up used for a day or so and now says her fingerprint authentication or windows password does not work. Now to the meat I created her a new gmail email, and put all of my info into the recovery. Over the phone today about 4 hours ago I gave her the email and password and said do not change it. Low and behold I get a text a few mins ago the password was changed and the recovery phone as well. I was able to recover the login and get in and put information back in that is my number for recover plus 2FA to my phone for login. I'm really starting to think now she might not be crazy, its either 1 she is having major mental issues and doesn't remember changing passwords or 2. Someone else is. Now the help I need, back in my younger days I was more up to date on IT security, but I've moved out of more IT based roles and life doesn't give me the time to stay up on these things. A list I need help with. In Gmail does anyone know a way or a log I could find to see what recovery number was inputed when mine was replaced? I'm going to get her laptop and wipe it clean, I'm going to set myself as an admin and just give her limited user profile. I don't go to their house much for other reason but I could physically go to their house and reset her ATT router to resetup wifi. I need a simple way to see what traffic is really coming in and out of her place, or at least something to put on her laptop to try and manage it in admin fashion. I have not seen what she has recently gotten but I'm sure it will be Microsoft home type license. Simply what steps would you take to see if your mother is has gone crazy or if conspiracy level manipulation is going on in her home with her IT devices. Crazy as this sounds this isn't even the half of it, but swear its all true. Thanks for reading and thoughts! [link] [comments] |
Netgear, Stop trying to upsell me. Posted: 02 Jun 2021 04:09 PM PDT After about three years, my Linksys WRT3200ACM gave up while I was in the middle of doing a bunch of important work. Since my internet was out and my phone service sucks, I decided to run to my local BestBuy, see what was available, and grab a router to get back online. Since I have a bunch of devices, I figured I'd be needed a decent router and I want to keep it for a few years without it becoming out dated. The NetGear router had 1.8ghz quad core, 512 ram, wifi6, triband, inny-mini-miny-mo, and looked like something out of starwars. Compared to other routers on the shelf, this seemed to be on the higher end and would support what I needed and then some. Whatever, this should work. Bought it, came home, and unboxed it. First, I needed to install some stupid app on my phone. Then create an account that wants my name, email, and to create a Netgear account. I can already see where this is going. Then I scanned the QR code, it started to setup, and took about 20-30 minutes just to configure. Way longer than just going to 192.168.1.1 and setting a wifi name/password. During this, I'm presented with a screen trying to upsell me a warranty and paid technical support. Finally, the router is online and my devices are connecting. So I figured I'd configure the DNS servers, make sure guest wifi is turned off, and other such things. Pull my phone back out, and I'm alerted with security scans being ran on EVERY SINGLE DEVICE on my network by a 30 day free trial service that comes with the router. I click on one and see I'm being up sold some type of security service for vulnerability scanning. I close out of the alert/app, and relaunch it. Upon relaunch, I am alerted to subscribing to a parental control service. Dude, just let me set this shit up and be on my way. I did not buy a router with more cores and better specs to have a portion of the processing power be used to advertise new products to me. I paid to have a device that routes network traffic.. a router. I JUST WANTED TO CHANGE THE FUCKING DNS SERVERS. I do not want to install DDWRT (or any variant) on the router because I find no enjoyment in spending a day finding the firmware it needs, flashing it, SSHing to it, installing other software, searching the internet on how to do all of this, any error messages, etc.. I just want it to work. I am now considering returning the device and finding something that that suits my needs better. Any suggestions?! [link] [comments] |
Help me understand MoCA please! Posted: 02 Jun 2021 08:05 PM PDT I work from home and my employer wants me to use a wired connection for security purposes. My Coax PoE is pretty far from my office, so I'm trying to find alternative solutions to avoid a ridiculously long cable run. I first grabbed some power-line adapters but, while they work, they severely throttle my speed and have been imparting a lot of noise into my signal (I work in audio so it's been a huge headache). I realized that MoCA could be my saving grace the other day so I figured I'd grab some adapters and give it a try. While the MoCA network seems to be up and running, my internet connectivity completely disappears when they are hooked up. The weirdest part is that I can still connect to my network, there's just no internet connectivity. Does anyone have any ideas as to potential fixes? I'd really appreciate any insight y'all might be able to offer and am happy to provide any additional info if it helps! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Home internet keeps dropping, could a new router help? Posted: 02 Jun 2021 07:05 PM PDT I have a TP-link AC1900 which usually works fine but too often the internet goes down and I restart the router which fixes it about half the time. Is there a way to tell if a better router would help without getting one and returning it if not? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2021 06:23 PM PDT Hey y'all! I tried looking through this forum for my answer but am really unsure of what my actual issue is. So I apologize if this has been answered a billion times I'm in a 2 floor apartment. The walls are concrete. The modem is on the second floor, and currently I have the Google WiFi mesh system that doesn't work well between concrete. I also have a Powerline adapter (TP-Link AV2000). Is there a good way to get reliable internet on both floors? I'm unable to physically run any cables between the floors, but I was hoping with the powerline adapter I'd be able to get two of the google wifi pucks hardwired, with the third device connected via mesh, but I realize I have a misunderstanding of mesh. Should I just get two new access points and connect them to the powerline adapter? [link] [comments] |
TP link extender DNS issues and general questions Posted: 02 Jun 2021 04:29 PM PDT Hi, I have a few questions regarding my TP link extender. Apologies for the long setup explanation...go ahead and skip to the questions... I just resolved a DNS cache/corruption issue on it and have a few questions. The extender is just a means for wifi on my desktop, so I had disabled the wifi extension function of it. So the past few days my desktop has been having internet issues that appeared to be DNS related (I can only get to some random random sites, some new/some previously visited, etc), and it appeared to be isolated to either the extender or my desktop as internet worked fine for my other devices. I tried every trick in the book I could find to resolve it -- all the ipconfig/netsh refresh/flush/etc; safe mode with networking; hardcoding DNS to google's; malware/virus scans; checking the hosts file; etc. I logged into the extender's admin console and reloaded/powered off/on a few times, also changed the DNS to google's, but nothing solved it. After the second reboot I could not access the extender's admin console even with the IP address (which was manually set previouly) or the tplinkextender.net domain name, so that's why I thought it was an issue with my desktop. Since I had disabled wifi on my extender, I could not log into it with another device to get to the admin. I finally gave up and just did a hard reset on it and after setting it up again, everything's working fine. I just remember long ago when I go it the setup was a chore so I spent most of my effort trying to debug the issue on my desktop, and wasted more time doing so. Anyhow, my questions:

Connectivity issue with TP-Link (EAP-225's w/Omada controller) and Pixels & Chromebooks Posted: 02 Jun 2021 04:27 PM PDT So, today I've been pulling my hair out trying to resolve a very weird/device specific connectivity issue with my TP-Link AP's. Seems that this only effects Pixel 3+ devices and newer Chromebooks (past few years). Can connect just fine to my EAP-225-Outdoor on both 2.5 & 5ghz. When "roaming" to one of the other AP's (EAP-225) it grabs the signal, authenticates, hangs on DHCP and drops. It'll refuse to connect. Go back to the other AP, picks right back up. This does NOT occur with a pixel 2xl, Moto G power, old as dirt Chromebook, Fire tablets, iPad, windows laptops, IoT devices.... So that rules out most other things. Wondering WTF am I missing .. And how do I get around this? Config: All AP's updated to the latest 5.0.x firmware. Removed the one "mesh" AP, other 2 are direct wired. Omada controller updated to the latest 4.x pfSense on r220, Aruba s3500 and Blade RackSwitch all are working as expected and settings verified. [link] [comments] |
Computer loses connection periodically throughout the day. Posted: 02 Jun 2021 04:26 PM PDT My computer wifi cuts out randomly throughout the day and I don't know why. Posted: 02 Jun 2021 04:07 PM PDT I'm looking into a router for my apartment at school and have 1 gbps fiber optic. What router would you suggest for 4 people. We're not using anything too crazy just phones/computers/video games. I was looking into a TP link router capable of 1250 mbps but said it was recommended if you have 300 mbps through the ISP. Why is this, is it not capable of 1250 per device? [link] [comments] |

Straight-Through or Crossover cable Posted: 02 Jun 2021 03:19 PM PDT The store owner gives me option on what ethernet cable to choose, straight-through and crossover cable. However I don't have any knowledge about this two, which one should I buy and why? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2021 06:45 PM PDT I'm not sure if this is really the right place to ask but I thought I might as well try. So recently I had an issue with some ransomware on my pc, (encryption of most of my files) which I believe I solved completely, (formatted all drives and reinstalled windows). I am paranoid right now that I am connected to a DNS changer. I haven't really noticed anything out of place that's obvious but I am not exactly sure about what I should be looking for. The question I have right now is, When I do ipconfig/all on my pc 6 DNS servers come up, but 2 of them are repeated, is this normal? When speaking to my friends they only had 1 or 3. the two that are repeating are my primary and secondary DNS server. Also, are these the only things I should be looking for to know if there was anything done to my network? [link] [comments] |
Help Connecting to a Raspi NAS with VPN Posted: 02 Jun 2021 06:20 PM PDT Hello, Had a post a bit ago about using port forwarding and FTP to connect to my NAS on the go. This sub told me about the security issues so I changed directions. I set up the NAS correctly on my pi4, and used the VPN feature on my Netgear router. I followed all the instructions, connected the VPN while away from home, but didn't manage to connect to the NAS. I'm not really sure how to know if the VPN is working; it shows connected, but I don't know how to actually confirm that. Anybody have a recommendation on this? [link] [comments] |
2nd router to add wifi capacity Posted: 02 Jun 2021 06:01 PM PDT I have 45 devices on my router. Cannot load in new devices and connection issues. Looking to add 2nd router to solve this. eero 2.4 bandwidths and smart home objects Posted: 02 Jun 2021 05:36 PM PDT Hi all, my SO and I just bought a house and we're upgrading some of our home stuff. Currently, we're on an eero network, and we love the speed and the distance that we get on the mesh. The only serious gripe I have with it is the 2.4ghz bandwidth issues. We have an Epson printer that just will never show up on the network through the Eero app (even after the 2.4ghz switch), and the printer can't find it on the network either. It's basically been a large piece of junk sitting on the desk since we've upgraded to the mesh network. The reason I bring this up is because we're thinking of installing an Tailwind iQ3 garage door opener, and the setup only works on 2.4ghz. We're moving in soon, and I'm wondering if I should just have two separate systems that will send out different bandwidths: the current eero mesh system that we have, and then another output that will only be on 2.4 band... If so, what's the best way to do this? I'm kind of at a loss here since I just don't want another potential headache with setting up all our devices, especially since we have the intention of turning our home into a smart home. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Wifi super slow but ethernet is fast Posted: 02 Jun 2021 05:25 PM PDT Hello everyone, i've been trying to solve this issue for decades, my wifi was working just fine, i was getting around 90/100mbps, but since 3 days ago, i'm barely getting 0.5 mbps on all devices including tv, but with the ethernet cable, i'm 100mbps, it was working fine, now i don't know what to do, i tried multiple things, nothing seems to work, even reset everything & configured everything again but still the same problem. On my phone wifi advanced settings, it says the speed is 65mbps, but when i go to speedtest, it's 0.3 to 0.5 mbps max I have a ZTE F660 router. I hope you help me guys, thank you so much! Mesh network? Or wifi extender? Or just bulldoze the house? Posted: 02 Jun 2021 04:48 PM PDT Hi I am looking for some help picking the right devices for me, whether that is upgrading to a mesh network or just a wifi extender. I currently have an ASUS CM-32 AC2600 wifi gateway. It works pretty well, but the cable wiring from the outside wall to the center of the house is water damaged and super old, as such it is now living in the garage so I stop dropping internet, but because the house is 2400 sqft it doesn't have the range to hit the whole house (but I do get the full 400mbps from the box) So essentially, I have no usable cable outlets in the house, I have no usable Ethernet ports (all the phone lines are not Cat 5/5e/6, but standard old phone lines), and the wifi gateway is stuck in the corner of the box in the garage for the time being. So what I am thinking is 1 of 2 options: 1. Use a wifi extender or 2 located in the house on the ground and upper floor. But I have had terrible experiences years ago due to switching between extenders. Is there something better out there now that makes this easier and works with my current ASUS? 2. Swap out the whole system to be a mesh system (router +2 points), it would need to be wifi 6 and capable of gigabit+ when wired for future proofing, but just to get me going it would have to work without being hardwired and getting a minimum of 100mbps from each point. So, essentially I will do rewiring. But I don't have the time and money for that right now. So that will have to lag a year or so, I just can't find sufficiently enough good info on what to do and I hope I can get some guidance from this group. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:56 PM PDT I'll start with the obvious - Wired is always better. However, I've moved into a rental apartment in which I have no way to have wires in my offices, my wife's office and the living room. So I've started to explore Mesh, and especially Deco M5. My current connections is capping at 70Mbps. One of the rooms (my office) has a very thick concrete walls, however this room does have Cat6 that goes to the hall. My ideas was yo put one Deco unit (the Router) there (Modem also located there), connect it to another Deco unit by wire to the Hall, and place 2 other Deco units in the Living room and my wife's office (which will connect wireless). We usually work off WiFi anyway, Mi box only connects to WiFi as well. There is little Wired devices, and if in the future I'll need one, I can get a simple switch. Do you this that Deco M5 is a good solution for this? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
In need of a Gigabit router recommendation, preferably TP-Link.. Posted: 02 Jun 2021 04:41 PM PDT I just moved apartments & my new ISP has installed a cable internet.. They offered a low-end router (I do not recall its name but definitely generic), so I decided to opt out of buying their router. So, I'm looking for a router with a Gigabit WAN & LAN ports, but budget is kind of tight (Around 70$). Any recommendations for what I should be getting, I do not mind other brands as long as they are high-end/notable. [link] [comments] |
Work computer connected via Ethernet to router but network name is old network/SSID from years ago?? Posted: 02 Jun 2021 04:38 PM PDT Hello all, I just moved in a new place and hooked my router up that was setup 3 years ago in another city. Back 3 years ago I setup the name of the SSID as "city-X" and had a few guest networks configured. Worked great. Then I unplugged it and used a new router/modem that came with my apt and had to use, so the old ASUS router sat on a shelf for years. Fast forward to me moving in new place 2 weeks ago- I busted out this old router, changed the name of the SSIDs and guest network. And connected devices. But for some reason my Windows work computer that is plugged directly into the router for a better connection for work- doesn't identify the SSID I just setup- it's the one from 3 years ago. I figure I missed something in the router config but don't see anyway that name is still there. I did a manual reset to factory defaults and made new SSID again, but on work computer it still has the old name. Is there a way to name the hardwired network of my router that the computer is plugged into? I had something similar happen with an old guest wireless network name causing an issue that turned out to be the fact I had the ASUS app on my phone and it was remembering an old guest network name. But I unlinked the phone with the app and did that reset to factory defaults and it still won't clear the Ethernet network name that is ancient. So I don't know what "network" it's really connected to since "city-x" isn't configured at all anywhere anymore. Tried plugging my MacBook personal into Ethernet to see what it showed but it doesn't say the name of the waited network anywhere. [link] [comments] |
Setting up a DD-WRT router as a secondary network Posted: 02 Jun 2021 04:37 PM PDT Hey guys, I'd like to set up a DD-WRT router as a secondary network connected via an Ethernet cable to the primary ISP-provided router/modem. I'm quite a noob so could someone please run me through what settings I need to change on the DD-WRT router to accomplish this? Edit: never mind, somehow seem to have figured it out myself lol [link] [comments] |
VPN, Domain Controller, Router...help! Posted: 02 Jun 2021 04:09 PM PDT Hey everyone, I have a working knowledge of basic networking, but I have run into an issue that has me beat. Hoping to use the homenetworking hivemind to help me out. Let me explain my current network setup. 1 Domain Controller for Home Business. Setup with a XX.XX.XXX.XXX IP 1 Modem/Router (T3200M) from my ISP. It is configured with the same XX.XX.XXX.1 IP range. It currently has DNS set to the suggested DNS from our ISP.
1 wife's work laptop that is not connected to the domain controller. 1 VPN connection on my wife's work laptop that she needs to use to connect to her office/files. The problem we are having is that when her computer times out it will often not allow her to log back in again without doing a reboot. After the reboot she will be able to login, but often cannot reconnect to the VPN at that point without getting her work IT people to remotely login and fix it. This is happening whether she connects through the Deco on the 192.168... or through Ethernet on the IP range that is assigned by the Domain Controller. Her IT people spent some time today, and I tagged along, and they decided that the issue was that when her laptop was trying to access resources through the VPN, it was trying to access DNS through the Domain Controller, and thus it gets confused. This seems reasonable, but I have no idea if it is actually the case or not. My questions. Does this seem like a reasonable reason why she cannot reconnect to her VPN at times? If so, how can I give her her own network that will use her VPN's DNS, instead of the DNS from the domain controller? I know I could pay for a second internet line from our ISP, but there must be a way to avoid that. One suggestion was to setup a VLAN, and if I need to learn about that then I will, but I am unsure if that's the answer or not. If you need any additional info please let me know. Trying to get my wife a stable connection for work, but I have to use this Domain Controller for work as well for myself. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
