    /r/buildapc x charity:water RTX 3080 giveaway!

    Posted: 01 May 2021 01:40 PM PDT

Just over a month ago we were joined by PCPartPicker and charity: water to discuss the Water x Stream campaign and their incredible efforts to provide clean drinking water to communities around the world!

Thank you to everyone that was able to participate, whether by donating, joining in on streams, or otherwise bringing awareness to this great cause.

We made a promise then that if Water x Stream was able to surpass last year's record of $320,281 we would launch an RTX 3080 Founders Edition giveaway here on the subreddit. Thanks to the hard work, selflessness, and incredible generosity displayed over the last month - including an incredible final push from PCPartPicker themselves - charity: water has managed to surpass this year's $500,000 goal!

So, courtesy of Nvidia, we've got one RTX 3080 Founders Edition to give away here on the subreddit. To enter, simply:

Leave a comment on this post answering the question: "What is/was your favourite PC part, and why?" and include a PCPartPicker link to the part - no purchase necessary!

    • Giveaway is open globally, entry void where prohibited by law.
    • Entries are open NOW.
    • Entries will close May 8, 2021 at 11:59PM UTC
    • A single winner will be randomly selected to receive the RTX 3080 and contacted through a Reddit DM. The winner will have 48 hours to reply to confirm before disqualification and another entry is randomly selected.

Thank you once more to PCPartPicker for their incredible generosity, to Nvidia for providing the RTX 3080 FE, and to charity: water for their commitment to delivering clean drinking water around the world.

If you missed out on our initial announcement and still wish to participate, you can still donate to charity: water's campaign on Tiltify here:

A couple friends and I built a "ghetto PC" for a friend who wanted to be as cheap as possible. After pooling our scrounged parts, this is what we ended up with. Behold! A true man's battlestation!

    Posted: 01 May 2021 12:27 AM PDT

    https://imgur.com/a/IkF51xB

EDIT2: TODO; Put the reddit account link of the lad who built most of this (since I posted for all of us, but he never gave me his account name lol)

    Parts list:

    • asus rog strix GTX 1070 (from my old PC, had been collecting dust for ~¾ of a year)
    • Intel i7-7700 (free from a friend, found it in a drawer)
    • (the pictures show an h60, but after finding out the pump was busted, he ordered a hyper 212 evo. He's using a stock cooler in the mean time)
    • MSI Z270 gaming M6 AC (same origin as the cpu)
    • corsair vengeance lpx (2x8GB) (from another friends' old PC)
    • XFX TS 550W 80-plus gold (from the PC of a friend's little brother)
    • Samsung evo 250GB (grabbed secondhand for REALLY cheap, like $30cad) UPDATE: It was actually from a friend's old PC, so he got it for free, too!
    • WD black 1TB & 500GB (found them in a random drawer in my house, they're ancient)
    • some crate we found in an alley and cleaned up. No case fans. We were going to use a hot pink "legally blonde 2"-branded milk crate originally but it turned out to be too small
    • only a power button. No idea where it came from or who brought it in UPDATE: It was also ripped out of the little brother's old PC, and it was the restart button. Since it was still a 1pin connector we just plugged it into the powerSW slot and it seems to work just fine!
    • zip ties o' plenty
    • cable management level: a s c e n d e d
    • yes, his headphones are hanging off of a binder clip

Total amount that he paid for all this: ~$300cad (for neither party wanted to just give/ take the GPU for free, and he wanted to buy a CPU cooler).

His total happiness level afterward: Maximum :)

EDIT1: Holy shit, we did not expect this post to blow up to this degree! Here are some general responses to some of the most common questions/ responses:

    1. "How is this ghetto? These specs are better than mine!" - It's a PC that's made entirely out of hand-me-downs, and it's built into a crate with zero cable management. The fact that the parts are pretty good in of themselves is out of sheer luck, and some kindness, too. As for the "found a 7700 in a drawer," yeah we think it's as funny and ridiculous as you guys do! We didn't mean to shame any of your guys' builds either, since even if your specs aren't technically as good, it probably looks a thousand times better on your desk/ floor and won't run into ridiculous issues that a fully open DIY project like this will. If I didn't happen to have the 1070 it would have been a 780 in there most likely!

    2. "Why didn't you guys just field a proper case? You probably could have found something for free just as easily as the crate!" - There actually is one, sitting right next to the build... The madlad insisted we use the crate instead.

    3. "What are the other things in frame? The monitor? The tablet?" - The monitor is an acer sa240y, though he can't remember where he got it. The tablet is a cintiq, which he got second hand on ebay for $250cad a couple years ago. The keyboard is a hand me down from his brother, and it's a G710+. For the keen eyed people who noticed the mic, it's a unbranded clip on mic which is normally used for interviews. He apparently got it in china but he's not entirely sure. The mouse is a g502, and the mousepad is a random gel one he yoinked from his mom ages ago: It has tape on it because it started leaking! ... And yes, he has a pair of xm4's... He did buy them for %30 off (~$350cad), but that is indeed more than he's paid for this build so far. Question it all you want, he doesn't care!

    4. Because people were asking about his cintiq he told me to plug his pixiv, where he posts sometimes as a hobby. What a shill lmao

EDIT3: Some general difficulties that we had while building this:

    1. There were no mountingpoints for the motherboard (or anything else, for that matter), so we drilled some holes and used zip ties wherever possible. Thankfully they were able to fit through the standoff holes on the motherboard itself!

    2. The issue of not knowing if it's ok to just let these parts sit on top of the plastic (particularly the mobo). Some of you guys brought this up, and we're already working on getting a little pad to put underneath it to act as a buffer. Made of a non-static inducing material, of course!

    Day 1,465 of HD630

    Posted: 01 May 2021 03:20 PM PDT

Now I don't expect anyone to read any of this but I just posted it here for fun whatever.

Backstory, but back in April of 2017 I built a PC, pretty normal, a decently high end, 7700k, 32gb ram, z270 all that stuff, but left out a GPU because my parents told me they wouldn't let me have one because I would "game" or something, so I had this essentially top of the line (for then) PC with no GPU fine whatever I didn't game at all anyways so my productivity work was a bit hit by that (especially blender renders)

Well I managed to finally get ready for a GPU with the release of the 2000 series, and since the 1000 series was so much better than the 900 series I was expecting similar gains, but nope, the 2000 series was a massive disappointment, so i was like, not really an issue I have more intense school now I'll just wait for 3000 series.

Now many people can sort of see where this is heading, 3000/6000 series was rumored to be insane and it was, so I was like yes 3070/6700 time, but wanted to stretch to a 3080 or 6800xt, so decided to wait for just a couple more months right? to get a used card once demand died down, but then of course BTC shot up again, which made me very happy, I've been waiting for a GPU for like coming up on 4 years now, and was there for the first GPU shortage, all the way back in '17/'18, and when it crashed, well you could get a 1080ti for pennies, so now I was really excited, all it needed to do was crash and finally my now pretty midrange CPU could finally be paired with a good GPU.

but its been months, and economists claim its not going to fall more, and well at least AP testing and another hard year of school is ahead so maybe no GPU for yet another year.

I swear to god at this rate I'll upgrade my entire build before getting a GPU, and that's just kinda sad.

So a combination of restrictive parents, lackluster options, and the bitcoin prices led to this is now day 1,465 of waiting for a GPU :D (My PC turned 4 a couple days ago)

In fact the only dGPU I've ever used for an extended period of time was probably the dGPU in the family PowerBookG4 and it's looking like its going to stay that way for another year.

So moral of the story? ¯_(ツ)_/¯ idk do what you want but don't be stupid.

Should I Wait to Build A PC or Go Pre-Built?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 04:39 PM PDT

Basically just the question I asked above. I know GPUs are in short supply but I want to upgrade my current PC to a new one. Not that this matters but I work in IT so I know how to build computers and pick out the right parts for what I want to my PC to have. Just right now with GPUs in such high demand and being rarely available, should I just go prebuilt? It seems like its the only way to get a 30 series card. I do not have much time to try and hunt for an available card without spending a bunch of money over retail, but also do not want to wait potentially months before there is regular stock available again. Anyone here feeling the same way or have any tips on what I should do? Thank you!

    5950x + M.2 SSD Crashes Computer, Same Issue with RMA'd 5950X

    Posted: 01 May 2021 10:56 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I like to think I am fairly knowledgeable and competent when it comes to building and troubleshooting computers... but I am completely stumped on how to move forward with this issue. Any help is appreciated.

Short version: anytime I attempt to run my computer with a 5950X and an M.2 SSD, the computer crashes. Running with a 5950X + sata SSD or 5800X + M.2 SSD works fine. I've replaced every single part and now my replacement 5950X is having the same issue.

    Long version

    1. June 2020 - I upgraded my computer to a R9 3950X + MSI MEG X570 UNIFY, kept all other parts from previous build.
    2. Oct 2020 - Bought a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB in preparation for the 5950X launch
    3. Nov 2020 - Had to RMA my CPU and motherboard (was getting a "can't detect CPU" error code on the motherboard, both companies said to RMA)
    4. Dec 2020 - Finally was able to snag a 5950X for a Jan delivery date.
    5. Dec 2020 - Also managed to get a 3090 shortly after, installed in the old PC and worked fine (replaced 2080Ti).
    6. Jan 2020 - Installed 5950X and 970 EVO Plus SSD, reinstalled Windows, computer ran fine for a few days
    7. Jan 2020 - Start a game for the first time a few days later, crash within 15 minutes. Consistent crashed when the computer is either idle or in game. Weirdly, the computer could run overnight without crashes if it was CPU mining.
    8. Jan-Feb 2020 - Went through the below troubleshooting steps. Found that I could run the computer from a Sata SSD or by lowering the CPU core voltage and forcing all cores to run at 3.4 GHz (later confirmed higher, around 4.2 GHz).
    9. Feb 2020 - Contacted MSI and AMD RMA support. MSI "confirmed" the issue was with the board and approved an RMA.
    10. Feb 2020 - Ordered a Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master because I was tired of the issues with the MSI board.
    11. Feb 2020 - Found this overclock.net thread with seemingly, my exact issue, troubleshoot more with some of the BIOS specific troubleshooting steps mentioned.
    12. Feb 2020 - Install the Gigabyte board, have the same problem.
    13. Mar 2020 - AMD approves the 5950X RMA.
    14. Mar 2020 - Buy an R7 5800X to use during the RMA.
    15. Mar 2020 - AMD confirms the RMA'd "processor has successfully passed the inspection" (I assume this means they tested it and have also seen the issue, right?)
    16. April 2020 - New 5950X arrives. Same problem.

Alternative parts I have tested with

    • CPU 2: R7 5800X
    • CPU 3: R9 5950X
    • Motherboard 2: MSI MEG X570 UNIFY
    • RAM 2: CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 2133
    • GPU 2: EVGA GTX 1060 6GB
    • PSU 2: ROSEWILL CAPSTONE Series 1000W 80 PLUS Gold
    • PSU 3: Seasonic 520W Focus Plus
    • SSD 3: Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 3.5" SATA

Troubleshooting steps taken in step 8 above:

    1. Tried booting with different RAM configs (various combinations of slots and ram sticks, including all 4 individually)
    2. Removed all external connections minus a DisplayPort cable
    3. Removed all additional HDDs (SSD boot drive untouched)
    4. Reset BIOS settings to default
    5. Tried a different GPU (EVGA GTX 1060 6GB)
    6. Tried booting with different RAM (CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000))
    7. Tried 2 different PSUs (ROSEWILL CAPSTONE Series 1000W 80 PLUS Gold, Seasonic 520W Focus Plus)
    8. Tried booting with a different M.2 SSD (Samsung 960 Pro 1TB NVMe M.2)
    9. Tried booting with a sata SSD from a second PC (Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 3.5" SATA) - WORKED
    10. Moved the 970 EVO SSD to second PC - WORKED
    11. Tried alternative BIOS versions. (up and downgrade).

Troubleshooting steps taken in step 11 above

    1. Tried messing with a bunch of settings mentioned in the post
    2. Tried downclocking the CPU to 3.4GHz - WORKED

Troubleshooting steps taken after step 16 above

    1. Used DDU to clean up drivers

Based on the Overclock.net thread and this Tom's Hardware thread, this seems to be a more widespread issue.

Now I have no idea where to go from here. With my first CPU, it appears to have been an issue with the single core boosting because on all core constant load (CPU mining) and with all cores downclocked to a low, fixed frequency, things appeared to be relatively stable. The second CPU is even MORE unstable and I can't get it to run for even a few minutes, even at reduced clocks. The SSDs work perfectly fine in my second PC. My main PC works perfectly fine with the 5800X. But BOTH 5950X have problems?? Excuse me but what the fuck? I have been able to replace EVERY single part. How is it possible I am still having issues? Is it possible I received a faulty replacement? Please send help.

I've built 3 PCs in my life and all have had an unfixable Buzzing sound in the Mic output (any headset)

    Posted: 01 May 2021 05:18 PM PDT

To be perfectly clear - I'm hoping to pull in some audio experts in on this post, as nothing from hours upon hours of research has helped me. I've talked to people in person and scoured the forums for any insight on this. I've spent hours rebuilding, trying different outlets, trying different headsets, trying different windows settings, downloading audio drivers. NOTHING has helped. I've built 3 PCs and every one has had this same issue. This leads me to believe its an error I'm making during the build process. I know its not a headset issue because they work fine on my laptop.

Currently I have a headset that's wireless, which means no cord and as a result, no buzzing sound. But its not a complete solution because as probably anyone reading this post knows, THE BEST HEADSETS ARE WIRED. Not to mention the latency issues (the real reason im S1 in csgo).

here is my current set up:

MSI MPG Z390M Gaming Edge AC LGA1151 (Intel 8th and 9th Gen) M.2 USB 3.1 Gen 2 DDR4 HDMI DP Wi-Fi SLI CFX Micro ATX Z390 Gaming Motherboard

Corsair CP-9020132-NA TX Series TX650M 650W 80+ Gold Modular Power Supply

    Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz C15 Desktop Memory Kit - Black (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15) XMP 2.0

    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-9600K CPU @ 3.70GHz, 3696 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 6 Logical Processor(s)

Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" SATA III 500GB Internal SSD (MZ-76E500B)

Thermaltake Versa H18 Tempered Glass Black SPCC Micro ATX Gaming Computer Case

DEEPCOOL Castle 280 RGB 280mm All-in-One Liquid CPU Cooler with Addressable RGB Waterblock and Fans, Cable and Motherboard Control Supported, TR4 and

Please don't be shy to make me a recommendation, but please also keep in mind I've tried all the obvious fixes (yes even including restarting the device)

Got a 5900x!...But haven't been keeping up with gear. How's my gaming/3D Modeling Build?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 05:10 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I had reserved myself to not being able to build this year with the lack of parts, but I was actually able to track down a 5900x! Problem, I stopped paying attention to new tech a while ago. I have a GTX 1060 that my buddy is lending me until I can track down a more substantial GPU like a 3080/3080ti. This will be my gaming, 3d modeling, DAW computer. Pretty basic, but you guys also catch the best deals. Let me know your thoughts and thanks as always!

    Would running a Corsair CX550M PSU with a 2600x and a 3070 be dumb?

I'm looking to upgrade to a 3070 whenever they become more available, and am wondering if my PSU could handle it. I'm fairly certain it can't, but it'd be nice if I could save a bit of money.

Best CPU for VR to pair with RTX3090 + Valve Index

    Posted: 01 May 2021 01:38 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I recently upgraded from a 1080ti to an RTX3090 and while trying to push the Valve Index to 120 or 144hz, I seem to be getting about 20-25% reprojection in the game I am playing at 120hz which I think is because of the CPU frame times spiking. My CPU is an i5-8600k @ 4.7Ghz. My CPU or GPU usage isn't usually that high either.

If I am correct and its the CPU holding me back, what is currently the best CPU I could get to allow me to push the higher hz of the Valve Index?

    Image from fpsVR for info

    Thanks!

I have had nothing but problems with this specific power supply, it's a Corsair HX1200 (1200 watt) which I wanted to run a setup with two graphics cards (I'm in data science, please don't hate me). The first one I received was DoA, so returned it and requested a replacement. The replacement took about a month overall, but once I received and installed it, everything seemed to be running smoothly. I've used it for two-ish weeks now with no issues. Today I was running a pretty normal load on the computer, both cards were being used, then I decided to play a game while the cards were being used.. the computer suddenly shut itself off and I heard a "POP". I was really worried about a fire or frying my other components within my setup (thankfully everything is okay after switching back to my old 850 watt and taking one of the cards out).. I'm kind of left wondering if, after going through two PSUs in such a short period of time, am I doing something wrong? What would cause a power supply to blow like this? I want to order a replacement but I haven't had good luck with this particular PSU so I'm contemplating just asking for a refund and going a different route.

Has anyone else had this sort of bad luck with PSUs? What can you do to extend the life of these components if this is some sort of user error on my part?

Thanks for taking the time to look at this!

Questions regarding cooling for a RTX 3080

    Posted: 01 May 2021 01:37 PM PDT

So I managed to score a 3080, and I need to upgrade my case and power supply. I want to keep my temperatures down and my 3080 cool and not heat up too much when I install everything.

The P400A Digital Case has three front fans AFAIK. I have the stock motherboard fan from my AMD processor. Should I get a exhaust fan as well?

Can a shorted GPU damage a working PC?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 05:14 PM PDT

My friend's AIO leaked down onto his GPU while the PC was on, it black screened I assume. I'm going to try to clean it with alcohol and test it in my PC (is it even worth trying at that point?).

So, can a broken, shorted GPU mess up a working computer, or will it just not work?

    Thanks!

    Computer under preforming

    Posted: 01 May 2021 01:10 PM PDT

    I have a 3080 evga FTW3 I7-10700k not over clocked 1200watt power supply 32gb ram m.2 drives 4k 144hz predator monitor

My computer seems to do worse now than when I had my 2770 super. I have used DDU and updated all my bios and all. But I can't seem to stream fall guys due to encoder lag, or minecraft, or cold war even though fps is fine when playing. My cpu does not go over 70 percent usage or 70c and I changed the intelipmm in the registry files already. My cpu also stays at 4.5 ghz whether on the desktop idle or in any game.

    Are Gigabyte GPU's good?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 12:52 PM PDT

I found a Gigabyte RX 5500 XT OC 4gb for €300, which is a great price in the current situation. Should I get it or wait for others to go down in price?

Is it okay to use my ssd as a boot drive have it connected by a usb.

    Posted: 01 May 2021 03:33 PM PDT

My boot drive right now is actually a hard drive, I'm just trying switch and I don't know if the ssd will work with a usb connection. It seems to be recommend to use a sata cable, but I only have one and it's hooked to the hard drive.

New to PC building and need help.

    Posted: 01 May 2021 03:33 PM PDT

I'm looking at building a gaming PC with a budget of around $1200 and was looking for help in what parts I would need, any help is appreciated as I feel in over my head being a console player for most of of my life.
The games I'd play mainly would be Apex,Warzone and LoL so being able to run those games at high or decent settings would be nice.
