    Time to start with Linux

    Posted: 31 May 2021 09:20 AM PDT

I've been thinking about using Linux for some time now. Now my Masters Dissertation requires that I use some software that prefers Linux. I could use Windows 10 (my current OS) but it may require a virtual machine and that's not an ideal situation.

I've got a couple options available to me:

    • Use a Machine On-Campus, it's not very flexible
    • Potentially borrow a laptop off the university, but this may take some time if it's available at all
    • Get Linux on my own Machine, either:
      • Dual booted
      • Or through a live USB

I'm leaning towards the last two options, it gives me a lot more flexibility. I can probably clear up my hard drive to leave ~70Gb free (it's only 170Gb after software so I never had much). I'm concerned if I partition the drive I'll run out of space on either partition, it won't leave me any wiggle room if I wanna do anything else. So I'm thinking it's probably best to use a live USB to play it safe. I've dealt with live USBs before as well so I know what I'm doing.

So I'm left wondering, has anyone else got experience doing an extended project on a live USB? Does it meet any problems? I have 2 USB ports on my laptop so if I run out of space on my 32Gb drive I could easily just use a secondary storage device.

I'll be using a lot of python. Are there any versions of Linux that are particularly friendly for scientific work? Or is Ubuntu just fine and I can install the rest on top?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

TIP: If you want to purchase a new PC to install a server running debian or any other distribution that does not update regularly, don't buy the latest hardware.

    Posted: 31 May 2021 11:44 AM PDT

It's been hell to even start the installer without network drivers on many distributions. I had to install debian testing for it to work.

[howto] supercharge nano with almost zero effort :)

    Posted: 31 May 2021 10:54 AM PDT

Tripped across this little gem when configuring nano - if you want to customize nano to add syntax highlighting and a ton of other cool features check it out - you can put the file in /etc/nanorc for a systemwide change or in each user's home directory in either ~/.nanorc or ~/.config/nano/nanorc.

    https://gist.github.com/jyc/1375240

There are two errors in the file linked above - one on line 45 where set const should now read set constantshow and the other in line 150 where set suspend should now read set suspendable.

The really cool part is that nano will tell you about the errors and even set them in red text but it doesn't tell you what the correct entries should be; a complete list of options is here - https://www.nano-editor.org/dist/latest/nanorc.5.html

    Enjoy!

How to get rid of snap-store/ubuntu-software?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 11:38 PM PDT

    Ubuntu 20.04.2.0 LTS

In processes section, "snap-store" process is using lot of memory and since i don't use it, i want to know how to uninstall it.

In application menu, there are 2 software apps: ubuntu software and software, former app was installed by default and i installed the latter one by myself through apt(gnome-software).

    Ubuntu Software, Software (gnome-software).

Now, to remove snap-store, which isn't even visible in app page, i used sudo apt-get remove snap-store which returns an error "no apt package "snap-store", but there is a snap with that name". I thought maybe it isn't installed. Entered snap-store on terminal which opened up ubuntu software. I thought maybe if i uninstall ubuntu software I'll get rid of it.

Entered sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-software, got an error "Package "ubuntu-software" not installed, so not removed".

    I'm confused. Please help.

    Thanks!

    Alsamixer question

    Posted: 31 May 2021 01:02 PM PDT

So everytime I want to switch between my speakers and headset I need to go into alsamixer via terminal and change the auto mute setting.

Is there a way I can automate this process by using either a hot key or add a button near the volume slider in the gnome UI?

My Job has tasked me with maintaining our Google Cloud Linux VM but I really have no clue

    Posted: 31 May 2021 12:00 PM PDT

    Hi all,

My job has merged with another role and I've been given the responsibility of running our Google Cloud Servers, I'm comfortable with most of that but what causes me anxiety and stress is my lack of knowledge of our Compute Engine VM (Linux Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. ).

I was given a very poorly written handover document about how to add media to our servers, restart the VM, etc. but outside of that I have NO CLUE what I'm doing and I find it very overwhelming.

IF anything goes wrong or goes down I'm the guy, there isn't anybody else with knowledge or understanding if things were to break other than the aforementioned handover. the company is also completely remote so when things do go wrong (and the have briefly) all hell breaks lose in my head.

So I need to increase my understanding of Linux - are all the versions the same to navigate? What's the best noob friendly video tutorial series?

Does Linux Mint file installation similar to Windows 10?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 01:28 PM PDT

How does the file architecture/hierarchy in Mint work? I'm switching over from Windows due to the similarity and ease of transfer between the two. I'm not finding the experience to be the exact same however. I'm finding that Linux Mint is more difficult to learn. Even a simple task such as installing a new program, a task that would normally be simple in Windows seems to be difficult on Mint.

I tried downloading a program called TiddlyDesktop, but I can't seem properly install and run it. When I downloaded the linux64 file I clicked on extract, and it extracted it into my user file (the one that contains Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, etc) as a file called TiddlyDesktop-linux64-v0.0.14, but I'm not even sure if this is the proper place to store that file..

If you can help answer any of the following questions I would be very grateful:

    1. Should I move the file containing the program (TiddlyDesktop-linux64-v0.0.14) to another location to store it?
    2. How do I run the program itself?
    3. How does the file architecture/hierarchy in Mint work?

    Thanks a lot in advance.

Can I Get AMD Software On Ubuntu?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 01:14 PM PDT

I have a 4k monitor and I have noticed that with the AMD software I am able to achieve very good image quality.

I want my image quality to be the same on Linux as I can get it on Windows which is why I am asking if its possible to install the AMD software which allows me to enable virtual super resolution.

Is there a good starting point for for getting my Manjaro iMac to recognize my bluetooth adapater?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 01:06 PM PDT

    • Manjaro KDE, mid 2007 iMac. Bluetooth worked from Manjaro live USB.
    • With Manjaro I had the same same driver break problem with wifi adapter, it seemed to fix it when I rolled back the kernel (however I tried a couple other commands, I forget what they were so I'm not 100% sure that it was the kernel).
    • Bluetooth worked perfectly with Mint (Cinnamon).
    • I spend some time following guides on youtube and forums but they seemed very different and also pretty involved, for me, so I was hoping for guidance in terms of how to effectively spend my time, ie what I should start with.

xkb not showing "<" key properly

    Posted: 31 May 2021 04:20 PM PDT

So I am currently having this issue with one specific key only. Everything in the keyboard works well, except for some reason the "<" key will type "\" instead. The keyboard is Spanish ISO from a MSI laptop.

To be more specific, this key should be [ less, greater ] but instead is [ backslash, bar ].

I tried to check the "latin" and "es" files in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ but I really cannot find the reason for this.

What it's very weird is that when I open the keyboard layout, I can see the "<" being pressed, and in the layout it shows the characters correctly. But when I go and try to write I will always get a "\".

    Pic of the layout

In the physical keyboard the "<" key is actually located between the space bar and Right Alt. But as I said, in the layout I can see the key marked in red being pressed when I try it, so it seems correct.

It is weird because it was working just fine before. Recently I have been using an USB keyboard with English UK layout and I switch between English and Spanish layout by pressing Super key + Space. Everything works just fine, except for this specific key of the laptop's keyboard.

Here is some more info from setxkbmap just in case it helps.

*******@pop-os:~$ setxkbmap -print -verbose 10 Setting verbose level to 10 locale is C Trying to load rules file ./rules/evdev... Trying to load rules file /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev... Running Nextcloud and openvpn3 on same VPS

    Posted: 31 May 2021 04:09 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I'll start off by saying that I'm a big linux/VPS noob but I'm trying to live to windows-free life.

For quite some months now I have a VPS running with openvpn3, which I connect to from my laptop or phone whenever I'm on a public WiFi.

Today I installed the linux app Joplin and I want to be able to sync it over Nextcloud. In the past I've ran Nextcloud on a VPS as well, but since I barely used it I closed that VPS.

My question now is if it's possible to install and use Nextcloud on the same VPS where I have openvpn3 installed. If possible:

Are there security concerns? (I'll be the only user using these services on this VPN) Should I start over with a clean install or can I just install Nextcloud "next to" openvpn3? Will I have to use "screens"?

    Any help is welcome! Thanks

Debian: unable to connect to wifi

    Posted: 31 May 2021 03:52 PM PDT

    Hi,

I've installed a minimal installation of Debian 10.9 stable. This is on a small server, with no desktop environment.

The machine has an Intel wireless card.

I've installed the non-free Intel drivers, as described here: https://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi

I connected to my network using iwd through IWCtl as described here:

    https://insanity.industries/post/simple-wifi/

    https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse

    https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Iwd

    wpa_supplicant is not installed.

When I check the network status using station list it shows its state as connected.

But, I'm unable to ping any ip address or hostname and there's no internet connectivity.

    Can someone help?

    Thanks

    Software Browser or "App Store"

    Posted: 31 May 2021 01:02 PM PDT

So I'm just trying to figure out what sort of options one has for user facing browsing and finding new software.

I know that most distros have their own tool for doing this, but I haven't been too happy with them. I'm on MX Linux now and really don't like its package installer UI, Manjaro's was moderately better but still lacking.

    What I'm looking for:

First, the software in question doesn't even have to install packages or manage them, I just at the very least would like something that would allow me to browse available software, with screenshots, adequate info about what the software does, and if it is not a package installer itself at least give instructions on how to install the software/package.

Anything out there kinda like this that works with MX Linux? Or perhaps some decent websites?

    Thanks

How to know that my PC is secure?

    Posted: 31 May 2021 02:13 AM PDT

Hello. I've a little knowledge about Linux security. When I used Window, there was anti-virus installed. So, if my PC encountered any virus, I got notified. But in Linux anti-virus is not used in most case. How can I know there is no hidden virus or something like that in my PC?

Is any package is safe to install from official repository?

No HDMI audio on arch based garuda

    Posted: 31 May 2021 08:05 AM PDT

Hi everyone , i have been try to move over to linux for months. Butt his week i took it seriously. I tested 11 different distros. Each had a problem or didn't play nice with my laptop's hardware. Final distro was zorin OS which was mostly great but felt laggy for some reason especially on 144hz screen. The yesterday i switched to garuda which is based o arch and boy everything works great , smooth , fast , so many tools that do all the basic jobs for you. It truly feels like a good windows replacement. Anyways on garuda and manjaro i have a problem where when i connect my external monitor , the video works great , everything from resolution and scale. But there absolutely no audio. This happens only with arch based distro, i trained pulse audio , and it states that my HDMI is unplugged , i deleted the pulse audio and ALSA no luck.i also messed with Nvidia drivers , nothing . I have no idea why is this happening. Anyone has any idea ?? I would appreciate it so much , this is the only road block between me and linux .

My laptop is razer blade 15 (2018) with GTX 1060 6GB The rest of the specs are nothing important to the problem

As for os : running arch based garuda linux with their own zen kernel. Altho same problem happened with manjaro , so i doubt it is a kernel thing
