vLAN assignments at home? What devices do you put where? Posted: 31 May 2021 07:16 AM PDT So i'm working on breaking my home network into various vlans, and hopefully getting them all working together. This is what I have right now: - Guest vlan that allows no LAN access except pihole, and client isolation.
What do you do for things like a NAS that both stores backup data, media, and serves up DNS, but also has some publicly accessible services? What about gaming system like xbox, or Roku / Android TV things that I use to access to local media server? Part of me says "IOT" but then they'd have no access to the media streaming on the NAS, unless I break the "no IOT-initiated access to other vlans" rule which is one of my more important ones. i would like to manage as few rules to allow "exceptions" as possible. TP link deco M5 adguard problem Posted: 31 May 2021 02:39 PM PDT When using the adguard app on Android whilst using a TP link deco M5 mesh network on WiFi, apps are slow to load up. Disconnecting from wi-fi or connecting to another network solves this. Any tips or fixes? DNS filtering is off. [link] [comments] |
My new home build network drop Posted: 31 May 2021 10:00 AM PDT I've done two previous low volt installs and will update more pictures as it goes on, but I'm pretty proud of this one. Ended up spending most of a day running each line. It's only 1,000ft of CAT6. The RG6 homerun and room runs have been moved up above the server backing. I'm going to mount them in the wall with male keystone jacks to make it super clean. I'm building three more houses for family in sequence with the final two being 6,000 sq. ft+... I plan on having several thousand feet of cat6 in each of these so I'm trying to get it all correct for those two final houses! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2021 07:27 PM PDT My Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus connects and then disconnects from my wifi. It does this over and over. All other devices connect to my Linksys EA8300 without a problem. So far I have performed the following t/s steps: 1.) Rebooted both the phone and router 2.) Forgotten the SSID (s) from saved networks 3.) Toggled WiFi and airplane mode off and on 4.) Upgraded firmware to latest rev. 5. Factory reset the router 6.) Factory reset the phone Since other devices connect to it without a problem I feel like it's not a router issue. I can't seem to figure out what the heck is going on with the Galaxy. Has anyone else seen this type of situation? [link] [comments] |
Computer network interface(?) problem when hosting minecraft server? Posted: 31 May 2021 01:23 PM PDT I've been trying to host my minecraft server for like 3 days straight with some success. It works fine when there are 2 people on it, however, when a 3rd joins(? possible cause) all I see is that the ethernet interface on my Win10 machine gets disabled, and I have to re-enable it, the network itself seems to have been stable, it's just my pc that loses connection. I don't know what even can cause such a problem like, this, so I'm asking you whether you seen something like this or not. The networking interface on my PC is the Intel I225-V. I knew of a bug with it being bad on 2.5gBit (However that seems to have been fixed on new models), so I limited the interface speed to 1 gBit full duplex speeds. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, as I'm stuck on this issue. [link] [comments] |
Wireless router won't stay connected. Help? Posted: 31 May 2021 03:27 PM PDT Saturday afternoon, I'm told that the TV, etc. went off with a small "pop" sound. A few minutes later, my dad was able to turn the tv back on, and that was working fine, but the router didn't come back up. I was not home at the time, so I didn't see what actually happened. Everything except the router has since been working fine. I've currently got the Ethernet cable plugged directly into my laptop. The router we're using is a Linksys AC1750, with Spectrum internet service. When I was fiddling with thing Saturday night trying to fix it, I ended up swapping out the AC adapter because it wouldn't turn on at all with the one it was plugged in with. With the new AC adapter, it turned on. But the network name- neither the one I assigned when we bought the thing nor the factory default was showing up as an available network on my laptop, my mom's laptop, or my phone. We could see our neighbors' netoworks this whole time. (Just as a note, the digital clock plugged into the same outlet is fine- didn't need to reset it or anything. And it's a cheap sort, not the kind that will automatically set itself.) Tried doing a power cycle reset (is that the right term? The unplug-wait-replug thing) 4 or 5 times over a few hours. Also tried rebooting the whole system from the power strip 3-4 times. Did a full factory reset. Finally after about 4-5 hours, we managed to get it to sorta-work. The network was showing up under the factory default name, but when I tried to run the setup on the Linksys website to set the name and password, the connection kept dropping. Did this 3 times. Finally at about 3am I got it to hold a connection under the factory default network name. Skip to earlier this afternoon. I did the factory reset one more time. Seemed to work- it went through the setup and let me set the network name and password. Then an hour later, it dropped. Opted to give it a little time and see if it'd straighten itself out. Nope. So I did another power cycle reset. That worked for about another hour, then it dropped again. Tried the power cycle again with no luck, so I rebooted it from the power strip again. Then it showed up again under the factory default network name rather than the assigned one and it made me run the setup again. Got almost through that, and it dropped again and I've not been able to get it to do anything since. That was about an hour and a half ago. Does anyone who know more about these things have any ideas? Do I need to replace the router (it's *maybe* 2 years old). Help! Please & thanks. [link] [comments] |
On-Q panels: How to mount / unmount devices? Posted: 31 May 2021 06:31 PM PDT How do I mount & unmount devices in my On-Q panel? My house has an OnQ panel with a home security DVR device on it, but I can't figure out how to remove it. Feels like it's firmly in place. Additionally, I want to mount my networking devices there, but not sure how to do it. Panel is "OnQ EN2000". Any help is appreciated [link] [comments] |
Will port forwarding for specific games on my PS4 speed up the connection for other devices. Posted: 31 May 2021 05:48 PM PDT The question is simple really. Whenever I play a game that's even a little bandwidth intensive, it causes the wifi to slow down for everybody else and stays that way until you reboot the router. Will port forwarding fix this and are there any negatives for port forwarding? [link] [comments] |
New home construction option help Posted: 31 May 2021 01:59 PM PDT Hey everyone, My wife and I are purchasing a home from a large home builder that is expected to be completed late this year. Included in the list of 'upgrades' they sell you, there is the option to add an Ethernet cable to rooms of your choosing. I spoke with the electrician these upgrades would go through over the phone and he was very easy going and said that although he would have to go through the builder's price list, he would be able to accommodate any request I need. My issue is i'm unsure what I should be asking for and was hoping someone here would be able to help answer a couple of my questions:
For context, the house is a 4BR + Office, ~2300 sq ft and is one story. I game pretty heavily and the wife and I both work from home which is why I would like to have a mess-free hard wire option if possible - I'm just unsure where to start. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2021 05:08 PM PDT Hi everyone. Sorry in advance, I'm super clueless on terminology and pretty much anything to do with networking. I've been having an extremely difficult time trying to figure out over the course of the past few months why my PS4 and Switch will no longer connect to my wifi. I finally figured out that it's because it is just trying to connect to a 5ghz channel(?) and there is no 2.4 for it to connect to. Although I have been using my AirPort for a coupes of years now, it has recently come to my attention that bridging disables my private network, so I can't mess with the settings and give myself the option of emitting a 2.4ghz and 5ghz channel. I'm wondering if there was any work around this, or if I'm going to have to disable the bridge in order to enable that private network again. Thank you so much in advance. [link] [comments] |
Linksys WRT3200ACM with Home Hub 3000 Posted: 31 May 2021 05:04 PM PDT Hi there, I was wondering if the Home Hub 3000 can be bridged with the Linksys wrt3200acm. I am looking to install a VPN client on the Linksys router. I however want to know what if it will work before I purchase the router. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2021 04:30 AM PDT Basically, this is for a "rec center" type place in a third world country that is only now getting fiber internet. Anything is better than nothing; however, I'd prefer it'd not too close to nothing-we're doing this for them after all. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2021 01:10 PM PDT Apology for my lack of general networking knowledge. I have a modem (I think it's a modem, maybe a router?) on the 2nd floor of my house, and the connection has a hard time reaching the basement, where my pc setup is. The modem can't be moved into the basement (unless I believe it's a coaxial cable isn't required, because the only place in the house that has that is on the 2nd floor), and a wireless internet connection just isn't cutting it. I used to use powerline adapters, which worked ok, but they recently broke after years of use, and I'm wondering if there's another solution before I just go out and replace the powerline adapters. Could I buy a router and place it in the basement, where the ethernet cable could reach the pc, or would I require a coaxial cable connection? And if so, are there are any steps necessary apart from simply purchasing the router that are required, perhaps through my internet service provider, in order to set it up? Thank you! Wifi keeps on dropping - unsure of why Posted: 31 May 2021 04:42 PM PDT I'm living in an area where there's only on ISP to choose from. My current set up is an Edgerouter X SFP with a Ubiquiti AP LR. Both are fully up to date. Multiple times throughout the day the wifi signals will randomly drop. I don't disconnect - I just stop getting any internet. My phone will show I'm connected and Windows 10 will say "connected, no internet". I changed the settings on my AP to have 2G at channel 1 and 5G at channel 36 - they were previously set at auto. This seemed to help for a couple of hours, but now it's happening again. I don't think I have two many devices on the network. I have a Synology and Roku device both wired. Connected to the wifi are two phones, three laptops, and a wifi smart plug. [link] [comments] |
Looking to upgrade network, ISP modem/router combo Posted: 31 May 2021 04:42 PM PDT Currently using my isps Router/Modem combo Gateway, my house is wired for Cat6 but the first installer put the gateway in one of the upstairs bedrooms for gods knows what reason. Looking to relocate it to the data closet in the garage and make use of the wiring in the household. I know I'll need a network switch, but since I'm only going to using 4 ports and on the account that I game alot, I was thinking of picking up a router. Wanted to know what you guys would recommend, I don't really need wifi and have an access point I can setup if need be. The edgerouter X thats always been recommended on here is OOS everywhere and overpriced everywhere else. [link] [comments] |
best way to set static IP. At computer level and/or Router level? Posted: 31 May 2021 04:39 PM PDT I know I can assign a static IP via the computer and the router's tables. Do I need to assign the IP of my computer at both locations or is setting it at the router more than sufficient? [link] [comments] |
Advice: First time setting up home network, 10gb/s. Posted: 31 May 2021 04:01 PM PDT Hello I have an internet connection of 8 gbps and would like to setup Ethernet throughout the apartment via cables (around 80m2 apartment size in total). I'm seeking for advice with respect to what switches, wires, sockets to use to make use of 10gb Ethernet network. I would like to futureproof it as well so planning to use cat 7 or cat 8 wires. Also sort the problem of bad wifi for good wifi signal throughout the apartment as the internet router will be at the entrance of apartment. [link] [comments] |
Recommendation for a good beginner level switch Posted: 31 May 2021 08:26 AM PDT I'm putting together my first homelab and I'm looking into rack mounted switches. Preferably something fanless and that would be good to learn the basic components of networking. I'm a Sys admin, but I'm slowly branching out into more networking and security so I figured I'd learn by setting up a lab. I know that tplink probably has the best "deals", but because I want to learn some of the enterprise systems, I kinda want to get a used enterprise switch from eBay. I'll be using an old PC with pfsense as a router and only have like 5ish devices that need physical Ethernet, so I don't need anything crazy. Just a well recommended gigabit switch under $200 that I can use to learn networking. I've come across the HPE J9980A https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00V32DO7U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_RA8AHJ2XJB7FAPEYXVS6 but I want to know if there's possibly some better options for the price range. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Just got gigabit internet.... equipment advice? Posted: 31 May 2021 03:10 PM PDT I need to upgrade my equipment. Here's what I have currently... Modem: Arris SB6183 I've enjoyed Google Wifi so far. It's a bit sparse in terms of power-user customizability, but there's something to say for a set-it-and-forget-it system. I love the app; it's very user-friendly. But it would be a waste to continue using my Google Wifi because at best it can only tap into like 1/3 of my current peak speeds. My new internet package gives me peak speeds of up to 1200 Mbps. I understand that it's a tall order for me to expect to get those speeds wirelessly throughout my entire home, but I would like to tap into as much of that speed as possible. At any given time, there are around 25-30 devices connected to my wifi network, including an always-recording smart security cam, various smart home devices like lights and thermostats, a couple of Apple TVs, a couple of game consoles, etc. Here's what I'm hoping for:
I'm not opposed to enterprise-tier equipment, but I haven't explicitly been looking there because I just assumed that enterprise networking equipment comes with enterprise-level pricing. Any advice and insights you can give would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Need help setting routers up on my modem. Posted: 31 May 2021 02:57 PM PDT Disclaimer I have little to no knowledge about networking and would really appreciate some help if possible. So I have a Huawei f300 modem connected through a adsl connection and the signal is really poor and I need wifi for a recently built shed out back so i bought 2 Archer c2300 routers ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B077HFWGKV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_RY1PY1T83V6E4QHDV9X6 ) this exact one here. I have to use my isp modem as a connection so I put the modem into bridge mode and connected my first router which will be kept beside the modem I have the first router set up but I'm getting no internet I have a ethernet cable coming from the modem into the wlan port on the router and it's just says connecting but never connects I've tried to contact my isp for advice but the wont help me because its 3rd party software ( aka not there problem). I've googled everything possible tried everything I could find except for this ( https://www.google.com/amp/s/cottse.wordpress.com/2020/02/05/eir-f3000-configure-for-bridge-mode/amp/ ) because it mentions this 'Modem have been flipped into Bridge Mode, just reboot the F3000 and your firewall device that is controlling the dial up. Your now back in the game ! ' and I have no idea what the firewall device is. I'm 8 hours trying to set this up and cant go any further if anybody has any idea I would really appreciate it thanks. Edit: I forgot to mention when I reboot the modem to take it out of bridge mode it gave the router internet then but it's almost like the router is just a wifi signal booster I can connect to my new networks but I'm still having the same signal issues plus I can connect to the modem directly still so it not working as a bridge correct me if I'm wrong please thanks. Setting up my ESXi server in the network Posted: 31 May 2021 05:08 AM PDT Hi there, I m gonna keep it simple so I can understand what you'll be explaining to me ^^ So I have my win10 PC with multiple VMs on vmware (pfsense and other vms pointing to pfsense as their gateway) + PC with brand new ESXi 6.7 installation + my home ISP router. Now first of all I want to access the esxi pc gui from my pc, my idea is simply connect it to the router and get that change its network settings to my router private network, right? Then via my win10 pc I can access the gui with that static ip address, no problem here yeah? And after migrating the vms from vmware on my win10 to the esxi directly (thats an other topic that idk how to do it, but I'm guessing it not gonna be complicated), pfsense is gonna take that interface with its own old ip address right? then how am I gonna access the esxi gui? same interface 2 differents ip adresses? And finally, I'm gonna take the esxi PC and set it up on an other network (office network) and make the pfsense running on it as the gateway to all other devices there; how so when I only got one interface already connected to the office ISP router? I know this is so confusing and might actually be stupid, but I want to make sure that I have an idea of what I'm gonna do before I actually start doing it. Any thoughts, advices or questions are appreciated, thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2021 02:33 PM PDT I have an Asus router from T Mobile whose model number is TM-AC1900. The current firmware is 3.0.0.4.376_3199. What I am trying to do is to setup VPN using OpenVPN by the OpenVPN version on the router is 2.3.2 which is not compatible with my VPN provider. I want to update the OpenVPN version to 2.4 but cannot find a guide as to how to do that. The other option is to update the router firmware altogether but I cannot find the download file on their website and the UI keeps saying that it cannot connect to the internet. One other option I saw was to flash the router to RT-AC68U/P and then update to latest of that or upgrade to Merlin. I want to know what is the best course of action for me and if there's anyone who had or have the same issue ? Really appreciate the responses. P.S. If this is not the right place for this, please let me know which sub would be the most appropriate for this. [link] [comments] |

Age old question: 'Smart Connect' or same SSID? Posted: 31 May 2021 06:46 AM PDT Hey there! So i have been running an archer A6 for a long time u til finally moving on to the AX50, both have smart connect (its TP link btw).. Now, I know networking, and I know routers. But I have never understood the difference between just giving your 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz the same SSID, which makes your device pick the best quality of either and connects.... Or using smart connect, which does.. what? To me, it just seems like a stupid marketing thing as it provides no benefit beside perhaps user friendlyness and ease to set up, so I wonder if any one actually knows the difference between the two setups? I currently run with both SSIDs the same, it switches between 2.4 and 5ghz on its own as far as I know, but I suspect it may only switch on a full reconnect. [link] [comments] |
