Port Forwarding Mysteriously Stopped Working For Me

    Posted: 01 May 2021 02:46 PM PDT

So I've run into an issue where port forwarding had previously worked, though the ports appear as closed now when trying to test them while the server is running. Here are things I have done:

    • Set the port forwarding rule in the router's settings (using TCP/UDP, port number is the same as what the program uses, internal IP Address is correctly set as my devices address). Have also tried rebooting the router after changing the settings with no luck.
    • Tried using the program Zenmap to check my ports for my machine and it shows the port as open for the service I am running
    • Have gone into the Windows Firewall settings and set an inbound rule for TCP and UDP for that port allowing all connections
    • I don't believe my ISP is using CGNAT, but I could be wrong here. The router's settings page shows the same address as a site like What's My IP. Also ran tracert on the public ip address and it only went to that same address and didn't hop anywhere else, though not sure if checking it works like that.

The game server (which is UDP) is running on a machine running Windows 10, though I have tried from another Windows 10 computer too. It shows up in the LAN tab at least. The router is a Netgear WNDR3400v3. I'm testing whether or not the port is open by using the yougetsignal.com port forwarding tester, though I haven't used this before so I don't know much about if it works for testing if you can reach a game server running on your machine. This site says that the port is closed though. Does anybody have any other ideas as to how to get this working again? I feel like I can't find anything else to try, but then again I'm not very experienced in doing this sort of thing.

Bought two MOCA adapters today, can't get them to work. Any tips?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 02:30 PM PDT

So I bought a pair of GoCoax MOCA 2.5gbps adapters off Amazon in order to try and get ethernet from the router downstairs to my room upstairs on the opposite end of the house. I've already tried powerline to no avail, and I didn't consider MOCA till I found out that there actually was a coax port in my room (I thought there wasn't). Which is good, cause afaik MOCA is way better than powerline. Plus, if I can get the MOCA setup to work then I'll also be getting a third adapter and moving my Plex server into a cabinet upstairs instead of downstairs.

I plugged one adapter into both the router and an in-wall coax port next to the router. The other adapter is upstairs, plugged into a different in-wall coax jack and my laptop. But I can't get a connection from my adapter, or even log into the adapter's browser-based configuration software.

I checked my router and where it plugs into the wall, there isn't an existing MOCA hookup I can use instead.

I have no idea what's wrong, any ideas?

Unable to log into Arris modem. ISP and Arris unable to help.

    Posted: 01 May 2021 06:27 PM PDT

Hello, my ISP recently gave me an ARRIS TG3452, and I've been unable to log into the admin page and both places I've called have been unable to aid me. Trying the simple things they tell me like factory restoring, using "password" or the serial number, nothing seems to work. Even my ISP was saying they were having issues with actually getting in to. They say the login information after a factory reset is supposed to be "admin" and "password", but neither work, even using "cusadmin". The fields can't be left blank, so that is out of the question to. I've tried the serial number, WPS Pin, preshared key, nothing seems to do it. If anyone is able to help, I'd appreciate it greatly. Thank you!

Lightning knocked me out. Could my punchdown be fried?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 04:21 AM PDT

Lightning hit the house this week, destroyed my router and all of my switches (along with a variety of other things in the house.

I ordered all new equipment and while I wait for it to arrive, I am trying to assess any other issues. None of the PCs plugged into the network were impacted, they all still have working Ethernet ports.

    I have this punchdown:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078FLT5S3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I am wondering what are the odds that there could be any damage to it. At this point, as I understand it, this is basically routing the wires, no actual electronics. There does not appear (on the front) to be any damage. Replacing this is a pain in the ass so I'd rather not if I don't need to. I'm going to do some tester work today to check the two ends of all of the cables but wonder about the board itself.

    Thoughts?

    Questions about WiFi signal strength.

    Posted: 01 May 2021 03:30 PM PDT

Currently my router is a Motorola NVG510 with AT&T, I don't know much about networking but I live in an apartment and the WiFi is terrible even in the room with the router, and it gets progressively worse as I go further away. What can I buy to change this and get a strong signal throughout the house? (It's a one story long apartment so width isn't much of an issue) do I need a new router? If so what kind? What can I get to solve this problem?

Best Option to improve connection to xbox?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 12:20 PM PDT

Hello everyone, currently connected via wifi to my xbox and pc which are both in my room.
my modem, (Bell Home Hub 2000) is in the room below me, though not directly beneath me (maybe 20-25' away in a direct line).
According to Bell's speed test (my provider) I'm getting 95Mbs to the modem, but only ~25-30Mbs to my pc at best, sometimes as low as 10 depending on other devices on the network and their usage. I would assume my Xbox is getting the same as my PC, as they're right beside each other.
I've recently started getting back into online multiplayer on my xbox, but the connection lacks stability, and in multiple different titles I get the same 0.5-2 second long freezes, usually 3-5 times in a ~10 minute match which is frustrating.
Which brings me to my question - what would you say is the best solution? I figure my options are as follows (though my knowledge is limited:
1 - buy a better modem which might produce a better wifi signal
2 - try out some powerline adapters - but i've heard mixed reviews on these, and they wouldn't be plugged into the same circuit.
3 - buy these "wifi pods" that my provider sells, but they cost $10/mth so i'm not keen on that
4 - run a cat5e from my room down to my modem, which is an absolute nightmare and will require drywall repair and potentially hours of time and cursing (I'm an electrician and have fished wires through this area of the house - i'd like to avoid it at all cost)
    5 - your suggestions I haven't thought of?
currently I'm leaning towards trying out powerline adapters, but also don't know how to go about choosing a good pair

PC won't connect until I run troubleshoot network

    Posted: 01 May 2021 09:00 PM PDT

I'm getting this really weird situation where when I boot my computer, it won't be connected to my LAN, and shows the 'No Internet' symbol.

This persists until I run the windows network diagnostics on my ethernet device, no other solution works (Restarting the device, replugging my Cat 6).

What makes this even stranger is that I don't actually have to run the solution to get connected to the network, it just has to analyze the situation, and will connect once it tells me the solution, but before I 'Try these repairs and an administrator'

When I have DHCP enabled, it tells my that I don't have an IP configuration, and when I tried manual, it tells me DHCP isn't enabled, but by the time it figures that out, there's no issue.

Network cabinet mounting and heating/cooling question

    Posted: 01 May 2021 08:34 PM PDT

The home I am moving into has a network cabinet setup like this https://imgur.com/a/kibHxSD

I have to put a cable modem, 5 or 8 port unmanaged switch and wireless router in here.

What do people use to mount it all? Velcro and zip ties seem tricky? Perhaps it works, but how would you loop it through? Zip tie to another tip tie until they are long enough?

And for cooling, is it safe to seal all that gear up with a metal plate covering?

    Thanks!

    What modem should I buy?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 08:32 PM PDT

I will be upgrading my internet to 1.2 Gbps download speeds so i will need a modem to support that. I was looking to buy the Netgear CM1200 but for some reason on Xfinity's website it says that modem only supports 1Gb while on Netgear's website it Says 2Gb so i'm not sure whats up with that and also am wondering if that is a good modem? it is currently on sale on Netgears website for 180 From 220. If that isn't a good modem or won't support the speeds I'm going to need, what do you guys recommend me to get?

    Please help me.. MoCA

    Posted: 01 May 2021 04:23 PM PDT

I am trying to set up a moca network in my home.. I've spent ~$500 buying things trying to get this to work..

    I have 3x MoCA 2.5 action tech adapters 1x arris SVG2482AC modem

1 PC up stairs connected directly to modem. Modem connected to splitter on the "IN" port then the out port connects directly to the wall.

Downstairs I have two coax ports, I have the coax that seems to be on the same route as the modem going into an "IN" on the splitter, then the two outs of the splitter one goes into an actiontech which is connected to the internet port of a router to give wifi to the house, the other goes into the other coax that is next to it.

Final action tech is in the basement, which plugs into the wall ... No splitter, then connects to the PC.

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong ive literally been at this for 8 hours now in all sorts of configurations.

The main requirements here are modem has to be next to PC upstairs for my fiances work and I have to get connection to my PC all the way down in the basement. If the router needs to go down there for the signal I'll survive with that. Thank you in advance.

    TP Link EAP225 troubles

    Posted: 01 May 2021 09:06 AM PDT

I've recently built a new house and ran Cat 6a to various different places. Of course the contractors ignored their instructions and now seven of the cables are 'somewhere up there' above the sheetrock ceiling, but that's another story :-p

I've connected the first two EAP225 units, one of which is an outdoor model. I upgraded the firmware to 5.0.3 for each of them and have installed the Omada controller software on my PC, which launches in a web browser.

The Omada controller software sees the APs fine, but adoption fails. I've gone into the AP settings and enabled the 'Cloud Based Controller Management' but then I get this error message when trying to adopt: "Device adoption failed because the device does not respond to adoption commands".

All the tutorials and step-by-step guides seem to presume that the EAP225 unit is plug and play with the controller software. The Omada Controller software sees them and adopts them, but this isn't happening with me. I ordered the OC200 but I've since done more YouTube, TP-Link community, and reddit searching which has led me to understand the Omada PC Controller Software I'm using should allow the EAP225 units to be adopted, so I'm writing this as I'm now concerned I'll have the same issues once I've installed the OC200.

So, are there some settings I need to amend within the individual EAP225s? I log in and there's a load of settings which can be changed, but aside from enabling the cloud based controller management I'm unsure what would need to be amended.

So that you are aware, I am using a dual band modem/router with a poe switch and currently have the two EAP225s connected via their own cat6a cables to the switch. Each EAP 225 works fantastically as an individual unit, but I'm trying to get it set up so I can have a mesh system running in the house and garden.

Please help by pointing me in the right direction so that I may take another step towards getting it done! :)

How can I maximize what I currently have?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 01:33 PM PDT

Below is an image of my current layout. 2200 sq fit single story rectangle home. 1gig fiber ONT box in the garage. I have two cat5 wires in my house, one in the master and one in the kitchen. Both in the wall. They are not connected via a switch. I have a single router set up in the kitchen.

Short of having to install more wires, what are some options I have for improving my whole house wireless speeds and range?

Looking for a WiFi alternative for half of home

    Posted: 01 May 2021 06:46 PM PDT

The WiFi sucks in half the house and it's causing issues on this stream box my mom is using. It's driving me UP THE WALL dealing with this piece of garbage but she's adamant about keeping it. I've tried a WiFi extender but nothing. I want to hard wire the damn thing but the router is 2 floors away and that's not an option.

I was thinking of a powerline adapter but apparently those suck. Next I saw something about MOCA adapters but I have no idea if I can have my router hooked up to the coax downstairs and the MOCA adapter hooked up upstairs at the same time and everything be working fine and dandy.

Anyone have any insight or suggestions on the best way I could try and get an ethernet connection in to this box?

Access point advices to replace an R7000

    Posted: 01 May 2021 12:44 PM PDT

    Hello!

I'm looking at replacing my R7000 with it's garbage software (it's unfortunate, it was a good product when we first acquired it years ago).

I'm a network admin in becoming so networking is no issue but i'm a little lost when it comes to access points choices for prosumers (I probably wont go the full enterprise gear with the controller and everything because cost is not meant for consumers anyway and space is limited at the moment)

I'm looking at something either Wi-FI 6 or 5 (to not restrain too much my choices).

We have FTTH and conference video calls are critical.

I currently have an ERX-X-SFP which is fine so naturally I would have went the Ubiquity route but their new lineup is not looking good for professionals and things like IPv6 is fairly broken and will never be fixed so Ubiquity is not something i'm gonna go naturally to if there is other good contenders. (I like to go the 1 brand for all route.. most of the time)

In my research, many people praised the Mikrotik stuff and indeed I really like the fact that there is a vast amount of devices to answer many needs. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have any Wi-Fi 6 radios yet.

I like open stuff as well so was considering building it myself (OpenWRT with a Wi-Fi 6 card) but when looking at it, I would need to drop a grand on a 5Ghz only card so that's not there yet..

I'm really open to anything so I really welcome any advice's!

    Many thanks for the help!

Just for precision, I'm really looking at an access point but might change the router as well in the future. So I would avoid having the two combined.

Also forgot to add that Ubiquity handling of data breaches is a bit no no for me and my work handle sensitive data so i'm not so much interested into a cloud product. (I'm all for spinning up a docker container locally..)

Pc gaming and wifi solution-I'm no expert

    Posted: 01 May 2021 04:43 AM PDT

So My isp provide me with upto 100mb download and 5mb upload I'm using a d-link dsl g256 router - i have an adsl adapter in my wall and a phone cable coming from it to my router then i put a cat6(whatever theycalled) from my router to my pc

Now we have plenty of wifi devices in the house but my main focus when i pc is gaming and ping/latency matters to me the most

Usually i get 60ms to eu servers which is nice but doing tests with dslr reporters shows huge bufferbloat and overall c score

I did my research on "gaming routers" and understand they are just an expansive gimmik

But i would love to get some help on devices that i can buy to improve my home network First i want to fix that bufferload and i understand i need a devicde with sqm or qos?

Also i would love to find a wifi solution because the wifi range is poor Sadly i am no expert at all-i know hardware and software pretty well but networking? Im lost!

I'd love to get some help about which options i have to solve my issues I also want to let you know that my current isp is the best for gaming latency in my country (my area aswell)

    Thanks!

    Extending network to an out-building

    Posted: 01 May 2021 02:36 PM PDT

Hi, all. Hoping for some crowd-sourced wisdom...

We are refurbishing a cottage about 100 feet from our home, and we'd like to make sure it has good internet connectivity. Problem: there's a road and trees and "stuff" separating the two. I was thinking about a tri-band mesh router, but there's kind of a narrow window of a clear line of sight - and then, the signal must literally pass through a couple of glass windows to establish the backhaul link between the internet connected base and the satellite. Is there any convenient, not-too-ugly way to establish a good, reliable connection for backhaul in a case like this? I've been a dd-wrt user for over a decade, but want something simple and reliable and (did I mention?) not unpleasant to look at.

Newbie confused regarding why PC wired to modem doesn't connect to wireless devices to router.

    Posted: 01 May 2021 06:01 PM PDT

I'm having some trouble understanding why my devices cannot "see" each other in my house, i.e. wireless printer cannot be detected by my PC, I can't use Plex to cast music onto Google Home, etc.

My current setup is that I have my PC wired to one of the ports on my modem (CenturyLink) which I disabled the wireless for because the quality is very poor. I have a wireless router connected to another port from the same modem, and that's where all of my wireless connections go through.

My suspicion is that it has to do with my PC not directly connected to my router (since it's on the modem), but I read through a lot of beginners guides and couldn't find any info on this (and if it is, I probably just didn't understand the language).

I found some relevant info regarding how I need the devices to all be on the same IP, but as far as I'm aware, I can't just go and change my modem and router to the same IP?

Anyway, I just really want to be able to use my wireless printer again, and be able to cast my music to Google Home devices again, but my configuration (due to small space) makes it so I can't hard wire ethernet into the router, and have to go through my modem instead. I'm just too new to this to know what would be the specific solution here.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

    Arlo home network exploit

    Posted: 01 May 2021 05:47 PM PDT

I'm not a "hacker" by trade. I have an Arlo camera system on my house, and I've always been interested in wifi vulnerabilities. I recently purchased a USB based wifi deauther from maltronics. I also purchased an esp8266 board with hopes of utilizing a gui from https://github.com/SpacehuhnTech/esp8266_deauther , but I haven't made it that far in practice yet.

I was able to deauthenticate a hotspot from a cellphone to my cellphone using the maltronics deauther. I couldn't deauth my AP though, and I assume that it's because it just rolls to the 5ghz channels. That said, my Arlo's are older models that only operate on the 2.4 range, yet I wasn't able to interrupt them.

Does this indicate that the Arlo system is immune to this kind of attack, or should I be trying other vignettes? Are there any other vulnerabilities to this wifi based family of cameras that you're aware of?

Any other concerns with arlo/nest/ring that should force me to hard wired?

    Thanks in advance!

Do I have what I need for Fiber?

    Posted: 01 May 2021 04:36 PM PDT

Pleases excuse a very stupid question -

Moving into a new rental condo that is pre-wired with cable / some network drops. AT&T says I'm eligible for fiber, but I don't have an ONT installed and don't see any kind of incoming fiber cable.

    Network Panel

Looked around the outside but didn't see any ONT or equipment boxes. Am I still eligible for Fiber? And if so, how will they bring it in? It's a rental so I'm pretty limited on what I can do. My only other ISP option is COX which I'd like to avoid at all costs.

    Am I missing something?

    Thank you
