Do you hire an electrician or a specific type of installer for ethernet drops? Posted: 22 May 2021 12:38 PM PDT I just bought a new home and there's just one ethernet port in the far end of the top floor of my home. I'd like to add 2-3 ports around the house. Would this be something a general electrician does or is there a specialized person that would do something like this? [link] [comments] |
Totally desperate trying to create a management VLAN Posted: 22 May 2021 05:01 AM PDT Hi! Sorry to write again, usually prefer to fix this things myself for learning and fun but I am really struggling trying to create a management VLAN on my network. Current setup: OPNsense router, Cisco managed Switch and Ubiquiti AP. Can´t find any tutorials about creating a management vlan from scratch.
Hope someone can help me, I know I am almost there but...have been days tryuing to fix this. Thanks a million in advance! [link] [comments] |
The Importance of DNS for Internet access Posted: 22 May 2021 07:38 PM PDT You may have the Best Internet but if your setup has a weak or failed DNS setup that 500 mbps or 1000 mbps speed will take you nowhere. Basically think of DNS as the "card catalog" of the Internet. If it works you're golden. If not.... Rather than trying to explain all of the ins and outs, I will link to a good and short article on DNS. This article by writer Calvin Ebun may Seem short but he packs a lot of stuff in there. You may wish to read it a couple of times. Good stuff Calvin! TY See Make Use Of - https://www.makeuseof.com/what-is-dns/ [link] [comments] |
New build - what do you think of my pre-wiring plan? Posted: 22 May 2021 12:22 PM PDT Hey friends. My family is in the throes of building a new house. We just finished the framing walkthrough and I need to lock down my low voltage plan. Would you mind taking a look below and let me know what you think? Massive thank you in advance. I'll take any and all advice. The prices feel a bit high (there is certainly a builder markup). But cheaper to do this now vs going back later. Ethernet runs - 21 runs, $137 per CAT6 ethernet run, $2,877 total (will have Gigabit Fios) 1st Level
2nd Level
3rd Level
Wireless Access Point Pre-wire 3x

Coax... coax everywhere - Moca questions Posted: 22 May 2021 06:36 PM PDT Hello! I am soon moving into a 3 story townhome and am looking into moca adapters to help cover the house. Here is a Lame Diagram of all of the coax in the house (better diagram will be made once I understand how all of this works). The "splitters" part of the diagram is just where every single coax cable ends/starts. Since the living room has two coax cables, I'm thinking of putting the Verizon Fios modem/router in that location (coax from ont to router to supply internet) then router ethernet lan > moca adapter > other coax in living room > Splitters box on diagram. From there, I'm assuming I can use a splitter (moca 2.5 recommendation needed) to use the coax to the bedrooms and basement to have a moca adapter in each for the ethernet port. Am I understanding this technology correctly? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 22 May 2021 07:01 PM PDT Today a website I occasionally go on blacked out and said "safari cannot open this page because the server cannot be found" I tried clearing my website data but that didn't work so I tried using my phone data and it worked so I'm assuming it has to do with my wifi and the website is an embarrassing thing so I don't want to talk about it with members of my Family or customers service [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 May 2021 03:04 PM PDT Looking to run cable from attic down along the outside of house to a camera. I know I need outdoor rated cable. But should I look into anything specific. Also is it okay to just run the wire itself along the house or should I contain it in something? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Advice on buying a new wireless Router Posted: 22 May 2021 06:10 PM PDT Hello, looking for any insight into what router to buy. Thank you. Just upgraded internet speed to 100mbps and router is very old, like 10 years and can only handle 50ish mbps so internet frequently disconnects in and out since the upgrade. I read somewhere of a few things to consider when looking at routers, like being "dual-band" and "multi-core processing" etc. Are these just normal specs for modern routers or should I be specifically looking for them. Also is the MB of RAM the same as being able to handle at least 100mbps internet speed? (Because it also said it should have at least 128mb of RAM in the article). So for a home, and an at least 100mb capable wireless router, would finding something around $100 be realistic? Nothing too powerful or best of the best, but just at least modern standards. I'd love to hear your recommendations and warnings, advice, etc. Let me know if it's fine to buy from Amazon, best deals if you are aware, any reason to or not to go to best buy or walmart for a router. Lastly, I am also looking at a "low emf" router too, and wanted insight from anyone who was familiar with it or similar ones to it. The JRS Eco 100 wireless low-radiation router. I am not 100% on it and am hoping to hear the other side to it and possibly any common drawbacks to "low-radiation/emf wireless routers" in general. One review mentioned ["Lowering pulse frequency might increase EMF exposure at the source of the device you're using"] as a con, is that pretty bad or? So curious if products like these are worth it or not. Thank you for any replies. [link] [comments] |
goCoax MoCA adapter with Arris S33 and Deco x60 not lighting up green for MoCA. Posted: 22 May 2021 06:00 PM PDT I need help, a cox tech is scheduled but I still want to try to work it out in case it's on my end. I have an Arris S33 and Deco x60 for router along with decos around the house. I wanted to get better wifi downstairs so I was planning on a MoCA ethernet backhaul to the x60 Deco downstairs. Plugged the MoCA adapter directly into the wall coax port. Then adapter to router via ethernet. Router to modem normal connection, modem to the TV coax port on the adapter. This gives me normal connection still, just not MoCA. The Lan and power lights are solid green but MoCA light doesn't even blink. The adapters work when connected together via short coax. Splitter at the cable box where Cox signal comes in is MoCA friendly and I don't have a central junction box of cables. No cables in the attic either to check for splitters. I plugged the second adapter in a coax port and then ethernet into my Deco downstairs, and that one also doesn't light up for MoCA but lan and power are lit green. What am I doing wrong? Any and all advice is appreciated. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
ATT Fiber install in my neighborhood, now my Spectrum drops almost daily. Posted: 22 May 2021 04:28 AM PDT I've had TW/Spectrum for 12+ years. It's really been the only option in my area. At some point Wide OpenWest came in but they don't offer to let you use your own modem.. Anyhow recently ATT bored underground fiber lines in my entire neighborhood. (I have a ugly term cabinet in my yard now 🤬) Now my previous rock solid Spectrum service drops almost daily for 1-5min. I am willing to bet the boring machine nicked a line or something. (I work alongside that industry, it happens more than you think). Coincidently Spectrum upped everyone in the area to 300mbps from 100 for free…. Customer retention??? How can I tell the customer service people that ever since ATT fiber project my spectrum service has been unreliable? Will they care? Will they send a tech/crew to trace all the lines? Advice on Yagis and Cell Boosters Pls! Posted: 22 May 2021 05:43 PM PDT Hi everybody, I'm just wondering if a Yagi would be a suitable solution for forcing connection to a specific tower when you are stuck almost directly between a "good" tower and a "bad" tower. I've tested them both quite a bit and one gets very congested on the weekends while the other does not. My signal is usually 3-4 bars on either, so it's not really a boosting issue more of a selection issue. If so, do I also need a bi-directional booster and an indoor antenna, I am not clear on this as I see some sites only selling the Yagi like it can do the job on it's own (though I don't see how). And lastly, what is the process between the Yagi and my phone? Will neighbors phones also start connecting to that tower because I have erected an antenna? I'm just a little unclear so if anybody here is an expert I would appreciate it! Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Powerline connects through router but not directly from modem Posted: 22 May 2021 05:40 PM PDT I recently bought a powerline adapter that works if it's connected from my wireless router, but if I try and connect it through the modem I don't get any type of connection. Ideally I'd like to connect through the modem since my network speeds were significantly faster when I was direct connect to the modem instead of the wireless router. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Help upgrading my home network Posted: 22 May 2021 05:27 PM PDT For the last couple of days I've been reading on how to update my current home network, but it has gotten progressively more complicated and now I'm kind of lost, specially regarding the router and switch. This is my current setup https://imgur.com/a/4rMKb02 I was hoping if I could get some help about what to buy, my budget is around $700usd, since, as you can see, I've never updated the hardware and now I really need fast and stable internet. The house is big, the current Wi-Fi dealer ( at this point I'm not sure what to call the Linksys thing ) doesn't reach the whole house, so I was thinking on buying 2 access points ( one connected with a really long ethernet cable ). We are 6 people in the house and at least 3 use more than 3 devices. I called my ISP and they said the fiber gateway is only being used as a bridge right now. I'm upgrading also the speed to 600 mbps. So, what should I buy? I read about Wi-Fi 6 / 802.11ax and was thinking of buying the Ubiquiti U6-Lite, I'm gonna update my laptop's Wi-Fi card with an Intel AX200 for 5ghz for it. When it comes to the router/switch I'm completely lost. I saw the MikroTik RB4011iGS+RM recommended a couple of times, but is it a router or a switch or both? and how are the router and switch set up? Also I'm not really sure about what does the Coax Ethernet Bridge does and what I need in order to keep using the fiber gateway as a bridge so I can harness the power of better hardware and not be stuck with what the ISP gave me. Any help would be really appreciated since this has gone way out of my league. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Advice on Wireless Access Point Posted: 22 May 2021 11:28 AM PDT Hi All I am currently on Gig 1 Fibre FTTP with Virgin Media (UK) So recently I upgraded to the ASUS RT-AX88U router which is a very good router in its own right , I get between 800-900 Mbps speed test from my phone on the 5GhZ band which is great The issue is this router is upstairs in my office room so when you go downstairs wifi coverage drops from 98% to below 70% once you reach a certain point in the home downstairs (it can get 84% to 96% in some areas downstairs directly beneath router location upstairs) I tried to give mesh a go and seeing that ASUS do their ai mesh I went and got the ASUS AX56U which is also an AX wifi 6 router but it failed miserably lesson learned Anyway I have returned the AX56U and am now looking at the getting a Wireless Access Point which can be installed onto the ceiling downstairs with an ethernet cable coming from the router My question is which Wireless Access Point is going to keep up with my 1 Gig speeds and Asus WiFi 6 router upstairs, I am hoping to get the coverage and speeds all over the house Reading reviews on some Ubiquiti products you get the speeds and coverage anywhere in the house and even garden that's what I want, I have 25 devices in the home so far, online gaming consoles etc so hoping to get great performance throughout Any advice is appreciated 🙂 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 May 2021 04:49 PM PDT I was reaching out to this community for some help as I cannot find any info that makes sense to me. I'm fairly new to home networking and am setting up my house to have cat6 run throughout. However I bought unshielded cable and there are spots where the cat6 runs near power. In my basement I have the cat6 running parallel with the power with about 4in between them. And where the cat6 terminates in the wall to a keystone, it passes over a power at a 90° angle. I was hoping there would be a way I could add shielding to these areas to prevent any data loss or add protection. Would copper or aluminum foil tape work for this? There is no way I would be able to increase the distance between the cables due to how the power was installed. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 May 2021 04:32 PM PDT Been working with setup of Omada and TL-R605. Several times, I have decided to reset (paperclip in the hole) and try again or try something else. No problems with resetting it. Today, when I try it, there is no change. No lights change when holding the button for 10-15 seconds. No web interface access. Omada doesn't see it, either. Any advice on how to force a reset to factory defaults? Any special trick? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 May 2021 10:32 AM PDT Hello, I live in a building with one ISP connection between 3 floors (family building). The ISP modem is in the ground floor and from there one network cable goes to each floor. On the Ground floor i have two servers running various vms and a nas that only I have access to. From there through a series of switches the network is distributed throughout the house. Is there an easy way (without wiring a second cable between the ground floor and my floor) to add a second router and have the two servers managed by that second router and only use the first router for the Internet connection? I can't put the first router in bridge mode because it serves the other two floors. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 22 May 2021 04:56 AM PDT I hooked up my AC earlier this week and over the past few days my router light has been going orange which means my voip phone and home secuirty also go down. Just came home to a blaring alarm and cound not turn it off the siren because there was no network. (I wonder how many neigbors I woke up??) At first I thought my old second hand APC-ES-550 UPS was at fault because its used and I already replaced it once with a knockoff battery. However I just made a coffee run this morning (12 hours after I get the battery backup installed) and I get a notification on my phone that home security has lost network.I get home and the router light is flashing orange AGAIN. Reboot router and all is going again so its a ROUTER PROBLEM not a modem problem. ROUTER = TP-LINK Archer C7 The UPS with entire computer system + network plugged into same breaker in fuse panel as Air Conditioner. The router goes down but the modem lights are all still good. Restart router, system comes back up. Don't even need to touch the modem although when I was migrating everything to the new UPS the entire system technically/theoretically had a complete reboot while it was all unplugged. So my Google reseach leads me to TONNES of info about AC and wireless Wi-Fi but info is really lacking about AC and wired networks. Can an air Conditioner interfere with a wired network enough to turn the signal light orange? Speestest . net test is all good. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 22 May 2021 03:45 PM PDT Hi, hoping someone can help me out here. I have my desktop & media server on 1 VLAN, however, I'd like to have them on two separate VLANs but still allow them to communicate with each other for delivering content (Plex specifically). I have tried creating a separate VLAN for both the desktop, and a separate one for the media server, however, once I do this I am unable to access it even with proper inter-VLAN rules setup in my firewall (UniFi/Ubiquiti). After some research and trial and error, I found that the issue was the fact that I was using a VPN on the two devices. I am using a paid VPN provider on the desktop and the media server, however, this seems to limit my ability to talk to other VLANs on my local network. I am able to talk to the media server from devices that are on the same VLAN though, with both also being on the same paid VPN provider. Basically, my goal is to have a VLAN for the server, and to grant access to any other VLAN to access the server - all while being connected to an (outside) VPN service. Hopefully this makes sense, thanks for any and all help. [link] [comments] |
What are your experiences with different networking companies Posted: 22 May 2021 03:33 PM PDT Hello, I just got into the home networking side of things and was curious what more veteran users experiences were with different companies. I'm not new to networking so I don't need in depth explanations but I'm curious what your experiences with companies like netgear, tplink, dlink and other bigger (or smaller) brands are. so here are a couple of questions: What companies have the best documentation/tech support? Who have have you liked the most (based on features, ease of use, best value, etc)? Who has the best legacy support or continued support of discontinued products? Who have you had the most problems with for any reason (poor quality, bad user interfaces, just plain bad, etc)? If there's any other points you would like to add please do, I'm sure I'm missing something important. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
How to do PoE/+/++ from ethernet wall jack? Posted: 22 May 2021 03:19 PM PDT Hello! Is the only way to get PoE to a wall ethernet jack to plug in that ethernet cord to a PoE switch on the other end, or is there another way? Thanks [link] [comments] |
SSH works only with IPv6 addresses. Posted: 22 May 2021 09:21 AM PDT Initial problem that I faced: I am trying to ssh to my linux computer through port 22 and I even setup the port forwarding on my router. However, online port checker tool says port 22 is closed. Upon searching google for hours, I have seen 2 things that caused issues. Firstly, my linux pc is probably not listing to port 22 (however ssh works through private network). Secondly, my ISP is JIO Giga fiber (indian company) which uses double NAT type network... So port forwarding isn't possible (I think). Now, here's my question, Is there any other way I could do ssh to my pc from other side of the world? And if you guys have anything else for me to check based the two issues I discussed above, I am more than happy to go through it. If this isn't the right place for asking such questions, please point me to a correct subreddit. The partial solution: I have enabled inbound and outbound rules for a specific port on my router for IPv6 addresses and it works now. However, since my router is behind a NAT, IPv4 became useless (doesn't work) in terms of port forwarding and remote accessing from other networks. So, since IPv6 works now, I realized that only clients with IPv6 can establish a connection with my router... For instance, if someone with IPv4 ONLY address tries to access/SSH into my server, it wouldn't work, the connection would simply timeout. Upon further research, I came across IPv6 gateways providers that solve this issue. However, due to my lack of knowledge of to set that up, I wanted to know if anyone here has a better alternatives or could guide me through setting up the gateway. Please let me know if you need any other information. Things you should know: +My ISP doesn't provide any details of their modem or any other information related to that. +They have completely disabled the IPv4 prot forwarding and so I don't have any way to port forward with IPv4. +IPv6 firewall configuration as mentioned above is the only way it works for IPv6 to IPv6 remote access. My question: If you have any solution for my problem like this... Please remember that I have only a little knowledge about networking, I am still learning. However, I am more than happy to research your explanation and figure my way through. Thank you for your time [link] [comments] |
