Help with changing keyboard layout on kde plasma? Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:16 AM PDT hello! I've got a problem: the . and , keys on my keyboard don't work, so i can't type them or < or >. I installed arch on an old laptop a few days ago, and i managed to bypass the problem by switching to dvorak whenever i needed one of the missing symbols, sending the series of dots or w/e, then switching back and adding in the rest of the characters. obviously, this is probably the least efficient way possible of doing this, but i eventually figured out how to make a custom map for loadkeys, and although it never persisted after a reboot no matter what i put into the vconsole.conf. today i managed to install kde without fucking up (as far as i know!) and unfortunately, loadkeys doesn't seem to work inside kde, with my custom map or with one of the maps already provided. I didn't get any error messages or anything, and from what i looked up, maybe the kde settings were overriding the loadkey changes? I can't find any way to change the actual layout from within the settings either, or maybe I'm missing it somehow. xorgmodmap, which worked in xfce but not in base arch, gives me the error message xmodmap: unable to open display ''. I can't find anything online that helps me fix this, i'm pretty sure it's some kind of config problem but i don't know what to do! At this point i hate dvorak with all my heart, and i really don't want to switch between dvorak and the default keyboard every five fucking seconds :( [link] [comments] |
btrfs subvolume strategy on single drive Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:32 AM PDT I just installed Ubuntu 21.04 on a single SSD drive, with a single BTRFS-formatted partition beyond EFI. In the past running Windows, I would typically partition my drive with a system partition where the OS and programs would go, and then a data partition where my data would go. This way, OS reinstallation wouldn't affect my data, and I can have different backup strategies for the two. As I understand it, Linux users using ext4 often do the same thing, putting /home on a separate partition. However, I think btrfs offers a better way of doing this, using subvolumes. If I have subvolumes, then I don't need to worry about resizing partitions -- they all share the full space of the single drive. When I installed Ubuntu and selected btrfs formatting, it created the "@" and "@/home" subvolumes for me, mounted at / and /home. This leads to my questions:
I guess my questions relate to "best" practices with btrfs on a single drive system. I like the idea of isolating my data from the OS, and having different backup/snapshot strategies for both of them, and maybe even for different subsets of my data. [link] [comments] |
[Mint] Crash after opening a laptop lid - Log analysis? Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:19 AM PDT This laptop has always been a little fussy with Linux and going into power save mode when being closed but today the whole smack went down. I dug this out of the logs
Not super sure what's going on and would appreciate some feedback. [link] [comments] |
How can I prevent my pc from auto suspending itself when Spotify is running? Posted: 29 Apr 2021 09:43 AM PDT Hey, I'm using Arch with gnome 40 and have the problem, that my pc keeps going into standby or suspension mode (idk how it's called in english since I have my system on german) every 15 minutes when I listen to music from spotify. I know, that I can completely disable that or increase the time in the gnome settings but I really want to use this feature if my pc isn't doing anything. I just want it to automatically be disabled when playing media through spotify just like it's disabled when watching videos or doing tasks like video or 3d rendering where I had my pc running for hours. Same goes for the screen since I like to see the songs picture in this spotify fullscreen mode. Edit: if it helps, I installed the spotify from the AUR since I had some dependency issues with flatpack. [link] [comments] |
How do I set up boot option for dual boot (win 10 and Linux mint)? Posted: 29 Apr 2021 04:29 AM PDT Just got windows installed on along side Linux mint. When I boot the computer it boots to windows, but I need to hold down keys to get to a boot order to open Linux. Is there a way to have choices boot automatically? [link] [comments] |
How often is linux less power efficient than windows? Posted: 29 Apr 2021 12:09 PM PDT I've seen two POW on it: 1) Linux drowns battery faster because of less compatibility. 2) Linux is more lightweight and doesn't spend too much energy. What usually works and if it's 1 then how hard is it to fix (if you are experienced or not). [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:32 PM PDT First of all, I am very new to Linux. 1.I will be dumping data from a 500GB hard drive. I was going to set up Linux on a live usb (128GB). Will I be running into issues? For instance, I will be dumping the data to two different bin files by inputting the following commands: dd if=/dev/sdX of=firstpart.bin count=6899870 dd if=/dev/sdX bs=512 skip= 976773158 of=lastpart.bin I can see that the command shows the source of the data (sdx) but I dont see where Linux will save them from this command. Im guessing these bin files wont fit on the usb that I have Linux on? Would I be better off installing Linux on the second hard drive in my pc? Or are bin files pretty much already compressed that this shouldn't be a worry? 2.I will need to access the second bin file from Windows as I will be hex editing from there. Can I just open the bin file directly from my hex editor by navigating to its location in the flash drive or where ever Linux sent it or is there anything special that I need to do to access it? I will be using Hxd via Windows to hex edit. [link] [comments] |
Best distro for old HP Stream x360? Posted: 29 Apr 2021 10:03 AM PDT This device I got for free and it was cursed from the start. It could barely run the Windows that came pre-installed. I installed Linux Lite on it a few years ago and it definitely runs better but I don't know if it's the best option as it's still pretty slow. I understand it's partially because the specs are so bad but I'd like to see if there are better distro options for it out there. I mostly just use Google Drive and whatever simple word processing program I can run. Specs as stated on the website Intel Celeron N3060 (1,6 GHz, up to 2,48 GHz, 2 MB cache, 2 cores) 32 gb HDD 4 gb RAM It's got a touch screen and I'd like to be able to keep using that if possible. I'll be installing it out of my USB drive which is 16 GB. I have no other computer at the moment. I'm a noob but I did manage to install LL and use it throughout college so I'm confident I can do it again I think that's all the relevant info but I'll be glad to add anything. Thanks in advance for any advice! [link] [comments] |
Atheros QCA9377 working very slowly after some time Posted: 29 Apr 2021 01:48 PM PDT Hello everyone, I have installed Pop!_OS recently on my laptop, Dell Inspiron 15 5570 (config: i5 8th gen, radeon, 16gb ram) and I've been having a lot of issues with my network card, Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377. So basically from the very beggining of my Linux adventure it was very slow, the internet download speed was around 2 mb/s whilst on my second Windows laptop it was around 50 mb/s. The first attempt to fix it was to change hardware encryption to software one with:
It actually helped! My internet connection was working great again, I had the same download speed as my Windows laptop. However, when I called my friend on Discord to talk to him, I was literally unable to understand what he was talking to me, probably because of constant network drops. The download speed was alright, but the network reliability was not very great. The fix to this issue was to turn off powersaving of my network card by entering this file:
and editing After that time, everything seemed alright, however I noticed that after long time of using my laptop without rebooting it (say, 10 hours) the network speed dropped drastically. The standard download speed of 50mb/s dropped to 2mb/s again. After trying to reboot my laptop, everything was working again. So the issue with my network card still persists, and I'm unable to find any solution for this one. I have to reboot my laptop every 10 hours so it works properly. Has anyone experienced the same issue, and perhaps knows the answer? I hope my description helped some of you with resolving issues with this network card. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Apr 2021 09:44 AM PDT Hi! I got the AMD RX6800 GPU because of their supposed Linux support, however, my system no longer works after installing the GPU. I managed to update the kernel to 5.10.x and I'm able to launch the desktop, but the performance is awful. Everything is stuttering. On top of that, only one monitor is recognized. What else do I have to do in order to have my computer work again? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Encrypt folder to be served by apache Posted: 29 Apr 2021 09:11 AM PDT Hey guys, I have an unsual situation. I have a SaaS. One of my clients live in a small town with a bad internet connection. So after trying different solutions, we are considering hosting the application in his private server. He has a tech guy and I´m affraid this tech guys access my source code. Someone could copy the whole machine and break the root password. I can`t encrypt the whole OS, because the tech guy needs some access to be able to do some kind of config or adjustment. I thought of encryoting only the source code folder, but it has to be served by apache, Is it possible? How can I do it? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Apr 2021 10:32 PM PDT Continuing the discussion from other thread... I couldn't see option to comment there... I finally got one 4800H, 1650, 8GB, 512 SSD, 60Hz (India Variant)... I directly went ahead and installed arch on it... Steps being, Basic installation according to Wiki, Gnome, nvidia while in chroot environment Problems: I couldn't get it to load ... Whenever I switched to X11, it would just be black screen... I.e Nvidia wouldn't load...I tried manually adding nvidia modules in initcpio but no luck Wayland seemed to work fine.. Finally, I went back to live env, chrooted in, just did Pacman -Rns over nvidia , gnome and all its dependency... Followed the guide, Installed xorg first, installed nvidia, Followed the guide, The step where it copies file,
If nvidia.conf is not available in ur machine, just create a new one at Dest. Then finally installed gnome, started gdm service and boom it's working with nvidia as primary GPU, X11 working great... After a week of use, I had no touchpad problems, no display brightness issue, ryzen is just great, GPU is working great... Temps are good... For a CNN I tried training temps never got above 93.5 C ...on average temps are between 50-70...so great... Battery takes 2 chare cycles in a day...but I use it extensively, about 9-10 hrs a day so battery life is quite good...
Overall I love the laptop, very much in budget and very good for programming ... I don't do much gaming but seeing the CNN performance I can say it should withstand 60+FPS on CSGO...
Edit: You should keep ur SSD partition on f2fs file system as it's specially made for flash drives like memory cards/SSD by Samsung... U can further Google about f2fs advantages for SSD.... I have 4 partitions, nvme0n1p3 -> / -> F2fs nvme0n1p1 -> /boot -> FAT32 (for some reason boot images need ext4 or fat, else it won't boot) nvme0n1p1 -> /home -> F2FS (deliberately kept seperate as I tend to distro hop often) nvme0n1p1 -> Swap partition [link] [comments] |

Allocating partition space and few hdd partition questions Posted: 28 Apr 2021 08:19 PM PDT Hello - I am having hard time trying to get the 186.gb unallocated space and give it to nvme0n1p4 partition. I do not want to mess up and risk blowing away my current set up. With that said I have a couple of questions relating to it - - How would I go about allocating the space over to /home partition? Gparted doesn't seem to let me just "allocate" the empty space. - It would be nice to just snapshot/backup everything so i can return them the way they are in case I need to. Is there a way to do this easily? - I just want to use it as extra space for keeping my personal work. It doesn't have to be merged into home space as long as I can access it easily (like C/D drive partitions in windows). Is there a way to do this and treat it as... /home2? [link] [comments] |
