Dead battery - can I use external power bank instead?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 06:16 AM PDT

Hey all, hoping someone can help answer my question before I spend cash.

I have a Cintiq Companion tablet PC. It's like an old iPad pro made for art. Battery is dead, replacement is over $350. I've removed it and it still runs via mains adapter.

To make it portable again, I'm considering running it off an external power bank, opting for a higher capacity to get more run time.

If I can match the power bank output to that of the mains adapter (19v3.42a), would it behave as if it's plugged into mains?

If anyone has a laptop/2-in-1 PC with no internal battery, and a powerbank that can match its charge voltage, please perform a test to confirm/debunk? Thanks!

Brand new laptop - VERY high temperature

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 10:29 AM PDT

Hello. Yesterday I bought brand new laptop ASUS TUF Dash F15. I installed some basics like Chrome, Discord etc. Nothing crazy. Today I launched Steam and My Time At Portia and noticed that after just few minutes fans started going ham. I installed CoreTemp and it showed that temperatures, in my non-knowledgeable opinion, are really high. After playing a bit longer they only rose higher. I am not really good at IT but my previous laptops didn't heat so much. Is there anything I can do? Or any more info I can provide to you to help us understand the problem?

My laptop power button is damaged and I can't access advanced BIOS to allow power up on DC supply, is there any way I can use my laptop?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 11:25 AM PDT

I have a HP pavilion laptop It has some decent specs but the power button and the body is not damaged Turning on the laptop is a real tricky job, I have to poke with my pen to switch it on plus as the body is broken it's very difficult to carry it around

I wanted to convert it to a desktop But I'm not able to access advanced BIOS which will allow me to enable power up on DC power supply

I have tried multiple ways Pressing A after entering BIOS Pressing fn+tab 3 times Pressing f12 But nothing has worked

It's my first laptop and other than external damage its in excellent shape

Would be very nice if anyone can help me out here!

    Thanks

My parents bought a 90w power supply for their 75w laptop

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 02:43 AM PDT

The title says it all. My question is that will our house burn down because not only is it 15w extra but the connector is really sketchy and doesn't even fit properly.

Are open box laptops on Best Buy worth it?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 09:01 AM PDT

I found a good gaming laptop (2060 anda Ryzen 9 with 8 cores) for 1300 CAD instead of 1500 since its an open box one. My budget is 1350 MAXIMUM so i was wondering if it was worth it.

I am planning to buy the Lenovo Legion 5 Ryzen 5 4600h, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, GTX 1650 4GB. But I am confused because of the different model numbers and I need help.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 12:47 PM PDT

I am listing the model numbers below, please help me find out if they're any different from each other. I can't seem to figure this out.

    1-> 82B500BHIN 2-> 82B500FJIN 3-> 82B500MMIN

They all have the same specs but the model numbers are different, is it normal or is there a difference between them?

Lenovo x1 carbon one year review

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 11:45 AM PDT

This is a review of my Lenovo Carbon x1 (7th gen) after one year of use.

The x1 carbon has a good reputation among business users and you can find many positive reviews, so I thought I would share my different experience for anyone looking to buy it.

I bought this laptop one year ago. In this time I have had a whole bunch of hardware and software issues. This really impacts the overall package and user experience, especially if you consider its 2000 € price point.

Below is a summary of all my issues:

Right after I got it, it started turning off for no reason with a full battery. Windows event log showed a critical battery warning and a shutdown afterwards. I sent it in for service and they updated some software after which the problem went away. I am also kind of disappointed at the battery life, as it is shorter than expected. Anyway, after one year, my computer is saying it can't detect the battery (even though it is powered on and running on battery power) so it seems the issue persists. At least it doesn't turn off anymore...

I also cracked my touchpad after I noticed one edge was sticking out slightly. I didn't apply any real force for it to crack. Kind of annoying. Luckly I got it replaced under warranty.

The touchpad has a software issue where sometimes it gets very unresponsive to touches. I have to reboot for it to go away. Also the pad is small and doesn't have all that great gesture support.

Bad fan control. The fan will spin up all the way up for a second and then drop back down to low speed constantly with load change. I haven't seen such bad fan control in 15 years.

I have a few dead pixels on my screen. Also kind of annoying.

The backlit keyboard occasionally doesn't work. It will just turn dark and I have to reboot for it go work again.

I expected a better charger instead of the generic one. Since the battery sucks, I have been carrying it around a lot.

While it has a good keyboard, is nice looking and lightweight, nothing else is particularly good about it. While most probably won't have as many issue as me, it still isn't worth the asking price in my opinion.

Noise Levels between ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 17 G733QR-DS98 and ZEPHYRUS S17 GX701LWS-XS76

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 10:37 AM PDT

    ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 17 G733QR-DS98: https://xoticpc.com/collections/extreme-series-gaming-laptops/products/asus-rog-strix-scar-17-g733qr-ds98

    ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS S17 GX701LWS-XS76: https://xoticpc.com/collections/extreme-series-gaming-laptops/products/asus-rog-zephyrus-s17-gx701lws-xs76

Between these two models, which is more quiet while gaming (if relevant, mainly ARPGs like Path of Exile and Diablo)? I've read the zeph has better cooling, but it is smaller. From what I understand, the smaller the laptop, there is less airflow and its harder to cool.

I can't seem to find any recent information online comparing these two models.

The Scar's GPU seems to be about 15% more powerful: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-3070-vs-Nvidia-RTX-2070S-Super/4083vs4048

And the Scar's CPU seems to be about 18% faster: https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-10750H-vs-AMD-Ryzen-9-5900HX/m1053158vsm1449683

Yet the zephyrus is more expensive. I'm guessing that's because it's more of a compact profile.

Again, my primary concern is the noise level because it'll be used upstairs where it is very quiet and I don't want to disturb others.

    Thank you in advance.

    Overheating while charging

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 10:32 AM PDT

I have an 11-month-old Asus ROG GA502DU (R7-3750h and 1660ti) and it has been running very hot as soon as I connect the charger. Keyboard gets uncomfortably hot, I cleaned the fans properly and I'm using it on a flat desk. I even updated the copy of windows and ran troubleshooter for it but nothing helps. Any suggestions??
I wanted to submit it with customer care but all the technicians are on sick leave coz of Covid.

Is there any point to buying SATA SSDs and M2 SATA when NVMe is making the latter obsolete?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 10:23 AM PDT

    As the title states.

I see the price of 2.5" SSDs closely matched with M2 SATA SSDs, and NVMe isn't too different in price either.

I understand that SATA and NVMe may possibly have different keys. I do know that M2 SATA can be compatible with M2 NVMe slots as long as it supports the key.

But with laptops evolving with more M2 slots, is there any point to buying 2.5" SSDs? Wouldn't it make more sense to get a M2 SATA SSD and get a 2.5" adapter (if necessary)?

    Help!

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 10:03 AM PDT

I am trully confused when looking at the diffrences between the performance of laptops. I want to buy the new Legion 5 Pro, but the only one I can afford is the ryzen 5 version, the one with 7 being 250 dollars more. The one with the 5 is already too much in my country, but I have been without a laptop for the past 5 months and I really want to buy one. Should I wait even more for it to go on sale, or is the performance diffrence not a good enough reason to hold me from buying the other laptop? I'll mainly game on it.

    Office Laptop under 500€

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 09:42 AM PDT

I am looking for a reliable laptop for my sister. Should be capable of office applications, simple web browsing. Not much performance but a smooth experience. Should have 8gb RAM (or 4 with the possibility to upgrade) windows 10 and a SSD.

I am still not sure if a dual core is enough and if the current Pentium cpus are any good.

Most importantly: it should be available in Germany right now.
