What is a good laptop for my sister that is 15 inches, doesn't get hot or too loud, isn't too heavy, can run a second monitor, zoom and homework, and weak games like Minecraft?

Which will give me the most bang for my buck?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 06:58 AM PDT

I have a $800 USD spending limit- I'm looking for a gaming laptop with whatever are the best specs I can get for this price. And over the last three days of looking, I've bumped into three that may check the boxes, though now, I'm not sure which to go with. I've heard Lenovo has poor build quality, I've heard acer doesn't last, and there isn't much to hear about Evoo(a Walmart owned brand,) considering they haven't had much publicity so there's a lot of questions towards them. But now it's your turn. Which do you think is best?

I'm open to any recommendations in the comments.

Should I just leave my laptop plugged in while gaming? Does that count towards the “cycles” of the battery?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 02:20 PM PDT

I like gaming but I also don't want to kill the battery so much that I won't be able to take it anywhere.

I'm looking for a Thunderbolt 4 dock that is also a power bank that supports up to 100w and has a detachable USB-C cable and replaceable battery.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:44 PM PDT

It would be preferable if said dock had a few type-A USB ports, maybe a USB-C port, an Ethernet jack, HDMI, VGA, (or DVI). It would also be preferable to have the dock be somewhat portable, though. My laptop has a disappointing battery life but is awesome otherwise and I'd like an all-in-one solution that fixes this problem..

New power brick trips home circuit breaker

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:24 PM PDT

I bought this new power brick with the same specification as the original one that came with the laptop today and initially it was working good but once my laptop charged up to 80% I heard a pop and all the lights went off in my room. I went outside and checked the main switch board to see that the circuit has tripped this switch and it's facing down. Are faulty powerbricks known to cause this?

    Power brick output: 19V~3.42A

Did I make a good choice

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:22 PM PDT

So I bought a laptop and it'll arrive sooner or later. I want to know if you guys think it's a decent choice. I honestly did not find anything talking about the model i got with the exact specs so I'll just write them here. The laptop is the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15ARE05 Ryzen 7 4700U, 8 cores, AMD Radeon graphics, up to 4.1 Ghz, 1920 x 1080, IPS anti-galre, 300 nit, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB ssd, 3200 MHz. That's more or less the important stuff (i think). The price was ~830 us dollars. I wanted the laptop for online school, schoolwork some light gaming and movie watching. Basically i wanted something that doesn't excel at anything but does fairly well for most things at an adequate speed.

Asus Tuf Dash F15 weird mouse problem.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 01:15 PM PDT

Hi, I've recently run into this issue on my brand new Dash f15 laptop.

Sometimes, randomly, the mouse will suddenly have a weird 'mouse acceleration' and go from really quick and snappy to suddenly being really slow and almost lag itself across. Then when I try to click on something the cursor will randomly jump and click on the bottom left of the screen for over three times in a row, before letting me click on something.

My initial thought was this was triggered by intense things running and the PC lagging, and often rebooting (or patience, as it randomly fixes) fixes it, but even rebooting once it was lagging on startup again!

It's EXTREMELY annoying and I really need a fix asap, this is my college laptop!

Note: I've tried many driver things, turned off pointer precision, and I'm at a loss here.

    Good laptop for development purposes?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 12:40 PM PDT

Hello there, I need to buy a new laptop mostly/mainly for work. I'm a software developer working mainly with heavy JVM usage, I'm looking for at least 32gb of RAM and good SSD storage but also good CPU, anyway, you probably know the deal.

I've had coworkers recommend macbooks, eluktronics and good old dell laptops.

From your experience or best advice, what brand/model would be the best deal in terms of performance/quality at the moment? Budget could be from 1.2k to 1.5k (USD).

    • Total budget:
      1.2k - 1.5k USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Mildly important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15 inch or more
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Mostly software development related programs, IDEs, JVM, etc..
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Not interested in gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Nothing specific.

[QUESTION] How to reduce Bluetooth interference when using many bt devices?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 12:18 PM PDT

Note: When I was first writing this, my Bluetooth devices collapsed and my keyboard started writing 'e' non-stop, it was fun.

So, I started using my PC (HP Envy 13'', i7 8th gen, 8GB RAM) with multiple external devices. I have a Microsoft Surface USB-C hub connected to a Samsung 4K LU28 monitor, and an ethernet connection. To the other two USB ports, I have a Logitech Brio and a USB Audio Interface.

Connected to Bluetooth I have a Microsoft keyboard and mouse, and a pair of Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro. For the first time, I'm experiencing audio trouble when listening to any kind of audio. Is there any way to work this out?

I am planning on building a PC in the next few months, but I'd love to reduce interference for the time being (and would like to know what to do if my future PC presents the same problems).

PD: Is there a subreddit where this question would be more appropriate?

Issues with battery life and heating on Max-17

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 12:16 PM PDT

I bought a Eluktronics Max 17 with a 2080 max-q in late 2020, and lately my battery life has dropped substantially, and the laptop is cooking itself, regardless of the power management settings. While doing light web browsing and document editing on google chrome, my battery life is at most an hour, and the CPU temps are getting as high as 80C. At idil the cpu is in the mid to upper 50s. I suspected I may have picked up some form of malware, so I did a complete reinstall of windows 10, to no improvement.

My questions are a) can anyone with the same laptop speak to their performance and settings? b) does anyone have any suggestions on what steps I should take to diagnose/ fix the problem?

Buying a second laptop for work

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 10:30 AM PDT

So I recently got a new "side job" and I've been thinking of buying a laptop for this job. I currently own a Asus ROG Zephyrus M15 which is great for my main job, ocassional video editing and, of course, gaming.

I am also learning to code and for this reason I am second guessing on which laptop I should buy. Maybe a Macbook Pro? What about a 2 in 1? Or another gaming laptop (new ones are still expensive)?

Just looking for honest opinions and/or recommendations. Thanks!

    ROG Strix G15 G512LV-HN033T (RTX2060) vs ROG Strix G15 G512LW-HN037T (RTX2070)

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 10:14 AM PDT

Hi, I have been looking for a new laptop. I need the laptop for my school but I will also do some gaming on it like Horizon zero dawn, GTA V, Warzone, etc.

    The ROG Strix G15 G512LV-HN033T (RTX2060) costs 1300 euros

    The ROG Strix G15 G512LW-HN037T (RTX2070) costs 1350 euros

I was wondering If the 50 euros is worth it for the upgrade from 2060 to 2070. Everything else is the same: 66whrs battery, 10th gen i7, 500GB SSD (will add 1TB SSD later down the road), etc.

I was also wondering if there will be a big battery life difference between the two and if the thermals are good with the RTX2070. (PS i know this laptop isn't really the best for the price but i REALLY REALLY like the design XD)

Hi! Need help with a laptop

    Posted: 30 Apr 2021 10:03 AM PDT

Hey! IDK if it's the right sub to ask, and I'm not really sure about the flair as well...but still it would be great if you could help me out...

So around January my father bought a Macbook Air M1 for his office work. But around March he got a windows laptop from his office' side. So, he gave the Air M1 to me for my college (starting in fall 2021) because apparently, a windows laptop was better for his work system.

The thing is, I might need to run windows for a few CS projects/homework in college (most probably Vanderbilt). I obviously can't buy a new laptop because college fee, you know.

So, is there a way to run Windows on Air M1? Even if that's not natively and not very fast. I just need Windows to run on it in such a way that at least my basic needs are fulfilled. Is there any way you can run windows on it?
