My Ram Speed was Stuck at 2133 mhz for over half a year. Don't be like me.

    Posted:

So I don't know if this helpful for anyone here but like many here I'm a PC Builder noob and maybe this can help someone.

Just yesterday I was debating myself why I was not getting the performance in games that I was expecting to have.

Then, someone mention the Ram Speed. I have 3200 mhz (16 GB) the problem was when I checked the performance on the Task Menu, the speed was at stuck at 2133 Mhz.

What I learned was that by going to the BIOs and simply change the profile the problem was fixed ( I have an MSI motherboard so it can be different for you, but if you have this problem search for a solution online and is probably not that different).

Just to give you an example my GTA V went from average 70 FPS to around 95, no joke. This was the reason why I began this search because I knew that with my Specs I should have better performance.

Hopefully this was helpful for some of you. Like I said I'm a noob so I can't help you much, the idea of this post is more to raise awareness.

    Check your HDMI cables

    Posted:

I built a pc back in 2011(i5 2500k and eventually upgraded to a gtx 970). Thing was a beast, but I noticed a year ago some older titles were starting to stutter randomly ( halo mcc, borderlands 2 to name a few). I just thought my hardware was finally kicking it so obviously I built a new PC (ryzen 3600 and gtx 1660s).

Built went fine, but I was still getting stuttering on these older games (in addition to the new games). I only play 60fps 1080p. I had reused my old PS so I thought that may be it. Replaced it - no go.

After almost a month of research and tinkering w/ Nvidia settings it would still stutter randomly (super frustrating). For an unrelated reason (moved rooms) I changed my hdmi cable - stuttering gone. Apparently somewhere along the way I started using a 1.3b hdmi cable without knowing and it was enough to cause the stuttering at 60fps 1080p. It even looks like the colors are more vibrant now. Unreal.

Don't make the same mistake. Seems simple, but check your HDMI cables.

Realistically, what tier of GPU do I need for casual gaming at 1440p?

    Posted:

I'm planning to get a new PC and the only fixed part of the plan so far is a 1440p monitor. I'll be using it for my day job (nothing crazy) and Ableton but also want to be able to get back into modern games, hoping 60 FPS at QHD resolution (tho can drop back to 1080p if recommended). Would running Control at max settings at 120 FPS be badass? Definitely. But honestly I'm coming from a 2016 laptop and I'll be more than happy with 60 FPS at medium settings. Initial target budget for entire PC (no peripherals) is $1650, goal is to first learn what GPU I actually need and then figure out what's necessary to not bottleneck it (might seek further advice from the buildmeapc folks later on once GPU is figured out). Many thanks for any help!

r/NVIDIA censoring posts about 3090 card failures

    Posted:

I've had 2 3090's (RMA'd the first one) consistently black screening on me while under load. Could be as simple as watching a video in Chrome, or as intense as Warzone. But I've yet to find a fix. It's pretty frustrating that the Mods of r/Nvidia aren't allowing anyone to talk about this in the appropriate channel. They've removed the simplest of questions about this issue twice in a row now.

I've tried replacing the DP cables to higher quality 8k DP 1.4 spec'd cables. Ran with the fans at 90% constant to keep heat down (they rarely get over 74 celsius anyways), have tried reducing output to one display at 1440p 144 hz, and made enabled debug mode and prefer performance modes in the NVIDIA control panel. All to no avail. It's infuriating that a $1500 GPU that's insanely hard to get, touted to be the top of the line, is worse than my old 980Ti.

I'm open to ideas if anyone has seen any workarounds for this. Else I'll probably RMA this card as well and hope I can catch an AMD card.

Do people ever "feel bad for their old pc" after getting a new one?

My i7-7700k is overheating while playing a game

    Posted:

To start off, my CPU has always been hot but not THIS hot.

So while i bought a new case to have more space I figured I would add a few more fans and also reapply some thermal paste since its 4 years since I bought it and why not.

After this it was at 30C - 40C while idling and life was great, but after a while it was back to bad-ish. Keep in mind I have it set in BIOS to "Gamer's OC" which has XMP Enabled and is overvolting it at 1.350v at 4.8Ghz

I've always had this setting on because I was underwhelmed with the FPS in CSGO while it was not OC'd. I go from 80 to 200-300 FPS when I use the OC preset. So after i got three new fans, got an actual Airflow set up and better cable management, I still have the heating issue. Therefore i bought a new CPU but it turns out it didn't work with the chipset in my Motherboard. So then I had to reapply the thermal paste on my old CPU (i7-7700k) and slot it back in. But now. No matter what I do, I have between 90-100C while playing a game and it drastically effects my computer.

I tried setting the voltage to 1.22 at 4.6Ghz but then the pc just crashed.

At 30-40% load it hits 90C+ and I've checked the watercooler/pump works (I think, it says Kraken X Pump and then the RPM, also the pipes are hot-ish)

I now to sit around the whole of easter with a toaster and I would really appreaciate some help!

    My specs:

MB: ASUS ROG MAXIMUS IX HERO - Z270 - LGA1151
    CPU: i7-7700k
    GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 1070
    Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62 v2
    PSU: Corsair RMx Series RM850x
    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz 32GB
    SSD: Samsung 950 PRO 512GB M.2 PCIe

My new CPU: i9-9900k (waiting for new motherboard)

Upgrading a PC for my grandson for his birthday, having trouble deciding what to give him.

    Posted:

My grandson's birthday is coming up next month. I used to do pc gaming but it's been a very long time, so I feel like I'm wading into some unfamiliar waters. I had his mother run a tool and this is the information that it gave me:

    UserBenchmarks: Game 79%, Desk 86%, Work 66%

    CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K - 80.5%

    GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070-Ti - 97.4%

    SSD: Samsung 860 Evo 500GB - 84.7%

    HDD: WD Blue 1TB (2012) - 72.5%

    USB: SanDisk Cruzer Spark 32GB - 15.8%

    RAM: Unknown 1600 CL9 Series 2x8GB - 58.5%

    MBD: Asrock Z97 Anniversary

Not a lot of this is very familiar to me, I have about 500 dollars to spend one one big part for his birthday, so I'm hoping to make it as big of an upgrade as I can. I understand that he doesn't have a 4k computer screen, so i might do that, but i'm worried that if i do that he wont be able to run games as well.

I don't mean to be overly verbose, but I'm a bit out of my element. Which one of those should I look into upgrading? Should I get him a monitor, maybe?

my pc out of the blue won’t boot up. Please help.

    Posted:

Yesterday, I went to restart my computer as it had been on for about a week or 2, and it was running slow and lagging. When I went to restart it, it would not boot back up. I tried turning it on, only one of my fans lights turned on. Tried again, same thing. After a few attempts, it wouldn't do anything at all. No life. Today we went and got a new PSU thinking that was the problem, put it in the pc, still no life. Only sign of life was the Ethernet cable light. I have no idea what it could be. But some info that might help, about 3 months ago, I shipped my PC from Texas to California. It wasn't packaged the best and came with a broken ram stick, and my case was dented in. so we had to replace it with a different type of RAM that was a bit older & a different brand. So I've been using 2 different RAM sticks in my computer. Also my computer is 5 1/2 years old & all those years, I would usually shut it down when I was done using it for the night. Ever since I came to California, I'll leave it running for 1 or 2 weeks at a time, and over the past month or so, my pc performance has slowed down a ton. Especially when I've left it on for a long time. It'll take so long to open programs, or even tabs on a browser. If you're familiar with the game Valorant, when loading into lobbies, I consistently load in about 15-30 seconds after everyone else. Please help me I have no clue what to do

Question: Replacing motherboard on Bitlocker-protected PC w/TPM

    Posted:

I currently have an MSI motherboard (Intel) with a physical TPM 2.0 module. I have my OS drive and a Storage Spaces array protected by Bitlocker.

I am replacing my motherboard and CPU with MSI (Intel) upgrades. I will be moving the TPM module from the old motherboard to the new one.

Do I need to: 1. simply suspend Bitlocker while I make these changes or 2. fully disable Bitlocker (decrypt) on the drives, re-initialize the TPM module on the new motherboard and then enable Bitlocker again?

    Thanks!

How to (possibly) get a GPU.

    Posted:

I just felt the need to put this out there. If you have some extra time in the morning go to your local microcenter (mine is 1hr away) and wait before they open.

My friend went yesterday at 4am and got a 3080. I went at 8am today and was like 10th in line and they had every card but the 3080 available. So I picked up a 3070. It is 1 per person per 30 days.

There was a kid I talked to on like and it was his 3rd time trying, him and his friend got a 3060 and a 3060ti. The cards and the opportunity to get them at msrp are there you just have to have some persistence and a bit of luck!

Good luck to everyone and I hope this helps at least one person.

Help Upgrading an Old Plex Server

    Posted:

Hey everyone. So I'm re-posting this here in hopes that it will be seen after it was ignored on /r/plex.

I need some help trying to squeeze more life out of my aging media and file servers. I am, unfortunately, on a fairly tight budget, and I have been since I first stood up Plex.

I'm currently running two machines to host Plex and all its files (plus three WD MyCloud NAS units), and both machines are, if I'm honest, cobbled together from salvage.

    Here's what I've got:

    Media Server:

    -Dual Intel Xeon E5420s @ 2.5ghz (Harpertown)

-NVidia GeForce GTX 770 (2047mb) [hardware transcoding is turned on]

    -6gb Fully Buffered DDR2 @ 333mhz (5-5-5-15)

-HP 0A9Ch motherboard (from an old HP xw6600 Workstation)

    -Windows Server 2012 Datacenter

    File Server:

    -Intel i7 950 @ 3.07ghz (Bloomfield)

    -NVidia GeForce 8400gs (512mb)

    -4gb DDR3 @ 801mhz (9-9-9-24)

-Alienware 04vwf2 motherboard (from what was probably an Alienware Aurora)

    -Windows 10 Pro

So... yeah. Obviously, I'm not exactly working with cutting-edge shit here.

Now, I have an extra GeForce GTX 770 on hand, and I've thought about installing it in the media server (to try and beat the 2-stream limit on hardware transcoding that NVidia saddled me with), but what forum posts and the like I've found all seem to suggest that Plex can't make use of multiple GPUs yet (though, the youngest of these posts was itself a year old, so there's that).

Does anyone see a viable upgrade path for any of this? What are my options for upgrading on a budget? As it stands, this setup can stream 1080p blu-ray rips more or less smoothly at original quality locally. But I imagine that a 4K file would kill it.

I know its pricey but I am willing to afford $1500-$2000. I have only started researching in pc building for a couple of week. If there is a component that I can replace for something way cheaper then please tell me because I am dumb!

I also know about the situation about GPUs so I'll bide my time to get this for a cheaper price.

Looking for a solid CPU cooler that will let me fully overclock my i7 6700k to 4.7 GHz

    Posted:

    Hi everyone,

I was planning to upgrade my CPU soon but with the supply shortages on parts like that I'm thinking about grabbing a new CPU cooler instead to get the most out of what I currently have. (Playing through Hitman 3 and definitely feeling the bottleneck at stock 4.0 GHz). Then I'll just move the cooler over to whatever I upgrade to within the next year or two and overclock that, probably one of the Zen 3's.

Currently I have a 4 year old Corsair H60 which wasn't enough for high overclocking even in its prime.

I have my eye on the NZXT Kraken X53 but I'm not sure if they're a good brand or not. That $130 is probably the most I'd want to spend on a cooler.

I know many would recommend the Noctua NH-D15 air cooler or maybe the U14S but I have an Asus Z270M Prime MicroATX motherboard which is a bit small and I'm wondering if they would even fit.

    Any recommendations?

My friend didn't listen to me and bought a premade iBuypower PC, i need help diagnosing to see if we can fix it and not have to rma it as he is in japan and it'll take months.

    Specs:

Msi 3070, 16gb ram, Asrock b550 pr4 mobo, some IBP water cooler, 1 SSD, 1 HDD and ryzen 7 3700x, PSU is 700w

    Symptoms

sometimes at boot there are white horizontal lines across the screen, and 90% of the times it crashes in a weird way, all of the fans and rgb stay on, but he gets disconnected from discord and theres no video or audio output plus the keyboard and mouse turn off rgb and all. he has to turn it off completely for it to load back and it either loads with the lines or it blue screens and it says windows couldnt load correctly.

    What we have tried

reseating the GPU, Updating its driver, Clean installing its drivers, running troubleshooters, we found that some wallpapers that its using from IBP are corrupted but i doubt its that (sorry if its that and im dumb) if im missing anything will post below as update

Installing new RAM on Asus Z490-P motherboard

    Posted:

    Hi,

I'm new to this pc building stuff. I have a prebuilt that came with 16Gb (8Gb X 2) of TridentZ RGB 3200mhz RAM and I bought 64Gb (32Gb X 2) Viper 3600mhz RAM. The computer was working fine so I shut it down, took out the old RAM and put in the new RAM in the same slots. I pushed it firmly into place so I think it's in there good, but I'm not entirely sure and didn't want to force it. I turned the computer back on and plugged in my projector (I use a projector as my monitor) to the hdmi port on the motherboard. The system turns on, but there is nothing coming up on the projector (no signal through the hdmi port). What should I do?

    Thanks :)
