Question: Will OBB files be a thing of the past for new apps? Android Apps

Question: Will OBB files be a thing of the past for new apps?

    Posted:

I've found various talks about migrating from OBB files (here, for example is a video about it), AKA "APK Expansion Files", which link to Android App Bundles .

I thought that app-bundle was more about resources in normal apps, of getting only the relavant strings files, drawable files, etc... That's why there are new formats such as APKS (of SAI app), APKM (of APK mirror website), XAPK (of APKpure),... I didn't know that it can be a replacement for the huge OBB files.

Are OBB files going to go away?

If so, does it mean Google will host all the files that apps need, when needed? What would it mean for alternative app stores? Or for websites that offer to download the apps from there?

I know, for example, that APKpure website hosts XAPK files that include the OBB files inside (happens especially for large games).

Need help finding an old app/apk!

    Posted:

Hello everyone! My young autistic daughter is the world's biggest Yo Gabba Gabba fan. This would have been great in 2012 when they still had an active show but here we are in 2021 where the show has been canceled for years, the toys are now expensive ebay hand me downs and the apps seemingly have all been pulled from the Google Play store.

The problem is the YouTube videos reviewing these apps have not. So my daughter has seen the apps, specifically for the Yo Gabba Gabba Hello Friends app and is OBSESSED with us getting it for her. She has a lot of coping mechanism issues relative to where she is on the spectrum and doesn't understand that 'we can't find it' isn't the same as 'we don't want to give it to you' or 'we're completely ignoring your needs'. As a part of her issues, this causes her to freak out, self harm, even attempt to harm us because she's trying to get her urgency across. In her world, this is a full on crisis and there's no way to reason with her at her current level of understanding.

I have searched the Amazon and Google Play stores and multiple APK sites where either the APK is a 0 byte empty package or an 85mb broken file that will not open or download. I am sort of at my wit's end as to where I need to go for this app. I am hoping as a desperate parent, someone here can help me out.

She's using a Galaxy Tab A from 2019, so my hopes are it at least runs well enough to open and do basic stuff. We used to have this app on her previous tablet (long since broken and discarded) a few years ago (2017, and the portion of the app that just displays Youtube videos was already broken, that isn't a big issue really since she can watch those on Youtube itself) so that likely made it worse because it stirred a years old memory of the app for her to dwell on.

If anyone can help, it will be so incredibly appreciated.

    Music player with rewind buttons?

    Posted:

It seems like all music players have gone to these incredibly annoying "sliders" where you need to press a tiny button and scroll it to the part of the song you want.

This is fine for regular music but absolutely horrible when you're listening to a 1hr+ long set and you want to just rewind a little bit. Like 5s , 15s, or 30s.

Can someone please recommend a music player with a rewind BUTTON, not slider

    Thank you!

Microsoft Outlook not installing anymore from Google Playstore

    Posted:

Hi everyone, recently my Microsoft outlook app stopped working so I uninstalled it and then tried installing it again, but it doesn't seem to install. I used the google play store to install and basically said can't install, try again later. I tried clearing the cache from the google play app and updating google play services. I think I might be able to side-load it, but to be honest, I don't feel super comfortable side loading something this sensitive. Is anyone else having this issue. Does anyone know of any possible solutions. I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you in advance.

Looking for a web browser with some specific features

    Posted:

Here are the features I would like:

    1. A bottom navigation bar, prefereably customizable.

    2. Dark mode not just for the browser ui, but also for the websites.

    3. Ability to set custom font for the website. (Optional, but it would really be nice)

    4. Ad-blocking, obviously.

    5. Closes tabs on exit.

    6. Decent user interface.

    7. Privacy friendly.

    8. Open-source. (Optional)

I have tried a lot of browsers out there, but none have all these features combined in one.

Vivaldi browser has ad-blocking, a bottom nav panel and a dark mode with nice ui, but it doesn't close tabs on exit. I use Vivaldi on desktop, so the sync is nice but I really can't stand not being able to automatically close tabs on exit, which the desktop version can do but the android version can't.

Bromite browser is open-source, has ad-blocking and dark mode, also closes tabs on exit, but doesn't have a bottom nav panel and ui isn't that good, basically very similar to chrome, also not a fan of the homepage.

Kiwi browser is open-source, has ad-block, closes tabs on exit, support for desktop extensions which I can use to change website fonts, has dark mode that doesn't follow system settings. It isn't updated often and the ui feels old. It also isn't as fast as some others.

Yuzu browser is open source, very customizable and it has everything but it doesn't close tabs on exit, even though there are some options on the settings to do it. Also, it doesn't feel stable and the dark mode options don't work according to system dark mode.

Soul browser has nearly everything, even supports custom fonts for websites, but it's ui is a rip-off of samsung internet browser, which i am not a fan of and it's not fast or fluid.

None of the versions of Firefox have a proper night mode, relying on the dark reader extension is just not good. Firefox also doesn't close tabs on exit and so on.

Chrome is out of the question.

Currently I am using Vivaldi and Bromite but I am looking for an alternative.

Are there any apps that manually rename a certain group of files to what you want?

    Posted:

I torrented an anime I'm really excited to see but the titles are in the name and honestly it's like minispoilers. Say there are 10 episodes.

Is there any app that renames the first file for example "E1" and then the next file "E2", etc? I don't wanna do it manually by myself because I'll get spoiled.

Weather forecast widget with custom shortcut?

    Posted:

I've tried lots of weather apps but prefer the simplicity of Google's own one with the frog. But, I really want a week of weather forecast on my homescreen as a widget, which Google doesn't provide.

I'm looking for a weather app where you can customize the click action on the widget so that it open's Google's weather "app".

This is possible with Chronus, which is a great app and I definitely recommend to folks, but the widget resizing seems to have broken on my phone for some reason. With default Pixel launcher and settings I can't shrink the Chronus forecast widget to 5x1 or 4x1 for some reason.

Anyway, I appreciate any alternative suggestions that provide what I'm looking for.

Minimalistic keyboad app for android 10

    Posted:

Got a new phone recently, and the gboard is killing me, especially in landscape mode. A large chunk of the bottom is covered by the bar for the home menu and the button for hiding the keyboard, some of the buttons are so close and so sensitive I often accidentally get a whole bunch of random letters and the backspace and enter buttons are particular problems with this.

I tried Swiftkey, but word suggestions were impossible to turn off and it kept badgering me to allow it to send data on everything I type.

I'm an old grognard and not interested in autocomplete and emojis and other newfangled stuff. So I'm looking for a keyboard that can do the following, and as little else as possible:

    • Type things letter by letter like a good ol' physical keyboard

    • Can have a Swedish keyboard layout

    • Supports landscape mode

    • Ideally, can adjust button size/distance/placement.

Anyone have any advice? Thankful for any help.

PS: if anyone happens to know if there's a way of hiding (or forcing to the side) the bottom bar that brings you to the home menu in landscape mode in general, not just for keyboard, I'd be grateful.

Looking for stupid agenda / calendar app

    Posted:

I'm picky. I want an easy calendar app with clear and compact UI that:

    • can set events / alarms
    • doesn't ask for unneeded metadata (eg. appointment duration)
    • provides a complete overview or list of all scheduled events

So far on Google Play I only found apps with cluttered UIs with tedious workflow which require extra time & effort to use.

    Please help!

Apps for CBR/CBZ able to connect to Calibre

    Posted:

Hello! It might be a way too specific question, but I hope someone can help me. The fact is, on iPad I used "Chunky", an app for reading cbz/cbr that allowed to download comics directly from the calibre library. I just had to activate Calibre as a server and the app would do the rest. I don't really know what the feature is called.

Ever heard anything similar for Android? My new tablet is an Android tablet and I don't know how to look for that.

    Thank you!

After using Swiftkey for years since almost the very beginning, I am saddened that it's no longer the awesome keyboard it once was

    Posted:

I don't know what's happening with it lately, but predictions are wayyyyy off. I used to smash the keyboard and it just knew what I was typing , now it doesn't do that anymore with the same accuracy as it once had.

(also the clipboard never worked right ) and I switched phones and it didn't restore my backup for some reason, meaning it had to once again adapt to my typing style from zero .

so I compared it with Gboard and Samsung keyboard, just mashed the word "world" as fast as I could to see who understood me better .

So far I feel Gboard is the winner ,feels faster too .

I don't like that Gboard space after punctuation is a hit and miss . (or rather it doesn't work for multilingual ) and I was used to long pressing backspace to delete an entire word at once like in Swiftkey .

is it just me or has Swiftkey gotten worse lately

Calendar with note- or journal- function?

I'm looking for a calendar app that will let me add notes or small journal entries in addition to my tasks and reminders. I was hoping Google Calendar would let me attach Keep notes but if it does I can't figure out how. If you can recommend a calendar that has this sort of function please do!

Cross platform app for GPS monitoring and setting boundaries

    Posted:

My father has Parkinson's, and is currently living with a nurse. He has hallucinations, and recently wandered out of the house when the nurse's back was turned. Thankfully, nothing happened and he was taken back home safely.

Is there a cross platform app (android and iOS) where we could receive alerts when he goes beyond a certain point or crosses a certain radius? Either based on gps or when he loses WiFi/Bluetooth connection?

    Google Stack alternative

today I see this new google app: https://techcrunch.com/2021/03/30/google-launches-stack-an-app-that-digitizes-personal-docs-and-extracts-key-information/

So this app isn't available in my play store (I live in Italy), I was wondering if there was an alternative app with scanning and document management features. Thank you all!
