Looking for a lightweight laptop for school

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 09:25 PM PST

I want to replace the laptop I currently have with something more portable yet still, relatively powerful. I'll be doing basic productivity, programming and video editing. I'm considering the asus zenbook with ryzen 4500u and mx350 or the ipad air 4. In that case I would use an old mac I have for coding. I'm not sure if the iPad can really replace a laptop though. Any help would be appreciated

    $700 Budget, USA, student

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 10:45 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Roughly $700 USD, USA, could spend a little more if really worth it but would like to keep it as affordable as possible

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Preferably not

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Don't need 2 in one, would like sturdy but lightweight enough to be easily portable, performance is huge, not looking to do anything crazy such as games and video editing but would like to be able to search, type documents, and atleast use excel without issues. Battery life pretty important, but less important than performance.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Doesn't have to be thin, would like decently light weight enough to be portable and not a hassle to move around

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Not smaller than 14, but not larger than 16

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    None, mostly streaming/document editing/browsing

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Sturdy build, something that will last and isn't delicate even if that means more weight/bulk, as long as it's not extreme, touchscreen would be nice but by no means needed

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Tired of buying laptops that are only good for a few years, not gaming on them or doing anything crazy but seemingly can't get away from laptops that suck after a few years-hoping you experts can help!

Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-55-56R2) vs Asus TUF (FX505DT-HN657T)

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 01:41 AM PST

    an515-55-56r2 vs asus tuf fx505dt-hn657t

I was initially leaning towards the acer nitro since it has better processor (i5 10300H) and gpu (1650TI) than the tuf (ryzen 5 3550H, 1650) but my friend said that the power throttling in the acer nitro really dampens the power of the i5. They are both at the same price, around 43k Php (~886 usd) and other specs are similar (8gb ram, 144Hz screen) but the tuf has 1tb hhd im additional to the 256 gb ssd. I am already maxing out my budget so these are the best (i think) I can get which is available in the store I'm planning to buy from.

PS: does this tuf model also have the thermal issues?

    $900 Light Gaming USA

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 10:41 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

I would love to spend $700-900, willing to stretch to $1000

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    yes!

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not very important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Very very light gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I would really just be playing LoL and Minecraft, i'm not sure what a good frame of reference is because I'm currently at very low graphics with around 10-20 fps. medium and 60 fps would probably blow my mind.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I would love a backlit keyboard and something that has some decals widely available, not deal breakers though

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Thank you so much for any help! I'm new to this and would love to get back into gaming with my friends, I mostly stopped because my dog water laptop was just too frustrating. Just looking for something cute that will get the job done.

    Upgrading a broken laptop, £1500-£2000

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 03:10 AM PST

Currently have a custom-built (pcspecialist.co.uk) laptop, which I upgraded the HDD to SSD and swapped the 8GB RAM to 16GB. After an accident the laptop now has some issues with it; it is very loud; the battery life is under an hour; it only charges if the charger is pointed in a specific direction. So am looking to replace it with a new laptop, I use the laptop for general day-to-day use, and work (mostly using Reddit and MS Office) but also use it for gaming.
    Currently have 16GB RAM, i5 (7th Gen) processor, 4GB GTX1050, 1TB SSD

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
£1500 hopefully, but up to £1750-£2000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
I'd rather not, but am open to it
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
2-in-1/ultrabook not really important. It doesn't have to be a super thin/light laptop, but I will be commuting with the laptop so don't want it to be over ~25mm or so thick and over ~2.5kg. Battery life is appreciated but not a key point.
A big point is that I would like this laptop to last a number of years (without an accident breaking it again)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
As with the last point, I'm not looking for a thin/light laptop, but don't want a huge laptop as I will be commuting with it.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Gaming, an array of games, most of which have low spec but if possible with a new laptop, would potentially start running more high spec games.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
My game of choice is Football Manager, which is pretty low spec and FPS not an issue, but would potentially start running more high spec games if I had a more powerful machine.
Other games I play: Cities Skylines, Planer Zoo, Sims 4.
Would like the option to play: MS Flight Sim, potentially some VR.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      None of those important
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      N/A

I was looking at this laptop with 32GB 2666MHz RAM, 8GB RTX3070, 1TB M.2 NVMe. Which is £1737, but am not the most technical person when it comes to computers, so don't know if this is a good price or if I'm missing anything because any other laptops I have seen with 32GB Ram, 1TB SSD, and 8GB Graphics Card all are going for roughly £2500.

$500-$900, USA, Old Chonk Laptop is Dying

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 12:23 AM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

My budget is $500-$900, though obviously I'd like to spend on the lower end of my budget if possible.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yep. My current laptop was a refurb, and it's served me well until recently, but now it is old and dying.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is the most important to me, because I will mainly be playing games on my laptop. Build quality is important too. I don't care too much about battery life, as I will be keeping my laptop plugged in most of the time.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Haha, well my current one weighs like 6 pounds and is a brick. So I can handle a thicc laptop.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will mainly be gaming, as I mentioned before, usually through Steam. Right now I can't play any games that came out after 2015, so I'd really just like to be able to play games that came out in the last 5 years, even if I have to do so on the minimum required settings.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

The games I've been playing on my current laptop, and which run very choppily, are Dead by Daylight and Paladins. I have a bunch of newer games I'd like to play, but don't run on my current laptop, but it's a big list. I'm fine with playing most games on minimum settings, as that's what I'm used to.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I've really just been getting by on the bare minimum (my current laptop doesn't even have an HDMI port or a webcam) so anything else besides the bare minimum would just be a bonus.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I think that covers it. Thanks in advance for your help!

Music Production Laptop around $1000 or lower

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 12:21 AM PST

Hey, I have a Dell Inspiron that I got in 2011 that Ive been using for everyday stuff, and looking to upgrade to something more suited for music production.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Under $1000 is preferred, $1500 max in the USA

Are you open to refurbs/used? No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance over everything. Laptop will most likely always be on the charger, or at least close to one

How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I guess 15 inches or above

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Primarily will be used for Music Production: FL Studio 20, some vsts/programs push FLs cpu really hard on my current laptop (4gb RAM, i3 processor, integrated geaphics card, ssd harddrive). May do some gaming and video editing, but optimizing for music is my main goal.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? If I were to game, i would probably see if I could play apex legends, or gears of war. Not requirements, but would be cool if it fits in my budget

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I definitely need ports: usb a/usb c, sd card reader and an ethernet port, but if someone can reccomend a good usb hub with some/all of these things that makes sense budget wise, I would greatly appreciate it!

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I hear getting a laptop with a dedicated graphics card is ideal for music production, so that would be ideal for my laptop purchase. I dont need anything fancy like a touchscreen, sleekest design or a 4D graphic experience, just something that is a workhorse and handle a lot of CPU usage

Console gamer seeking guidance, £300 budget.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2021 03:13 AM PST

I'm wondering if finding a gaming laptop for around £300 ($420, rounded up) is realistic or not. Allow me to clarify that, I don't expect to be running modern games on a machine that will probably have outdated hardware or be second hand. The games I want to play are Baldurs gate 1 and 2, Fallout: New Vegas (Maybe, already played at least half a dozen times) and Old school RuneScape. I already play RuneScape on a laptop that I found in a cupboard, it can barely stay above 20fps and frequently freezes. It's been in the house since - at least - 2014 and was never intended to be used for gaming. I fear doing higher level content and being killed, not for lack of skill, but for downright shoddy hardware.

Anything over £300 is probably not worth the investment given how few things I want to do with the laptop itself. All the same, I'm open to any advice here. If I'm being completely unrealistic, please tell me, and I'll disregard the notion until I can afford something more expensive.

I don't expect anyone to actively seek out any 'deals' for me. But if there are certain parts I should be looking out for in a product, like an 'Nvidia __________' please tell me that too. I am completely ignorant in this corner of the gaming community and not too proud to admit it.

I made a post about this at r/pcgamingtechsupport, it got removed, my bad. Should've read the rules. Before it's removal, however, I was suggested a Dell 15 3000 inspiron. Slightly over my very, very modest price range but I don't mind paying a little more for quality's sake. I want to be thorough before I make my purchase though, so if there are any alternative options, I'd be very grateful to hear them.

    Appreciate any guidance :)

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

£500 - £750 GBP. Would go slightly over for something special.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

A good build quality and mid level battery life would be ideal.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not especially important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Primarily gaming

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don't play many triple As but if it could run something like Rocket League at 60fps that would be great.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard would be nice but not a dealbreaker

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I basically just want the best value for money within this budget without too much of a 'gamer' aesthetic.

I've had my eye on this Lenovo Legion 5 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-Legion-Gaming-GeForce-Windows/dp/B08BLHPTTT/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=lenovo+legion+5&qid=1614766403&sr=8-1

but I've seen some reviews claiming it to be expensive for what you get.

    Cheers

This doesn't have to be a very high spec laptop as I'll mostly be using it for regular use and multimedia being the priority. However I've never owned a laptop or PC that could run anything more than Rome Total war and I'd like to try out some pc games that I can't play on playstation.

What kind of price range would I be looking at?

Does anyone have any experience with the legion 5i? If so, what do you think of it?

I want to use it for not too heavy games and for some school stuff.

One thing I still want to know is if it's loud if you just use it for normal things like word and internet, because I also plan to take the laptop to school and don't want to have a loud laptop.

Form Factor, battery life, performance, build quality

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Pretty important. Looking for it to be portable and comfortable to use

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13" - 14"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Will mostly use this for writing. Might also use this for light DIT work and editing, so Premiere and Photoshop. But even then, I'll probably be using proxies when possible

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'll be trying to not game on this, but if I do, it'll just be the occasional rogue-like and such.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Looking for 2 Thunderbolt 3s, or 4s if that's possible. A touch screen would be nice as well. Definitely needs a good keyboard, but I don't need a numpad.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
A 2-1 in would be nice, but not a requirement. Thanks, all

$700, USA, Electrical Engineering Student Looking for a Laptop that can run games and engineering software decently.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 09:36 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $700 in the United States
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, if from a reliable site
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I don't care about 2-in-1, although it's a nice touch. Build quality should be solid, and I should be able to run common engineering programs and games such as Valorant with relative ease. The longer the battery life, the better, but I don't have strong preferences.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
The lighter and thinner the better, but not a big issue.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Around 14-17 inches is good
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Playing games like Valorant, Minecraft, and Genshin Impact. I will probably need CAD in the future, not sure which programs exactly
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Low settings are fine, around 60+ FPS, the higher the better. Valorant, Minecraft, and Genshin Impact.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good, usable keyboard and reliable build quality are important of course, but I'm not expecting anything crazy for the price. Touch-screen, finger-print, optical drive, etc aren't important to me.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I have a Macbook Pro which is my main computer. I need this computer for programs that only run on Windows, such as the video games I listed and some engineering programs.

$600, USA, Looking for the perfect laptop for a writer.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $600 MAX, United States.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes, from reputable places.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    1. Battery life.
    2. Build quality.
    3. Form Factor (light).
    4. Performance.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Fairly important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I think I'd like 15, but could probably be convinced I don't actually need that.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

This machine is primarily for travel and writing, so high end programs are not needed.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

MUST MUST MUST have a good keyboard.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm looking at relocating and would like a laptop to carry in my everyday bag for writing and some daily tasks. I cannot guarantee constant connectivity, so Chromebooks are a bust. This thing needs to be able to be comfortably used for long periods for when those inspiration sessions really kick in. I'm looking for the IDEAL writers' laptop.

Keyboard quality is huge here. I've used a modern Macbook Pro for my current job and those shallow flubby keys make me red in the face. I'd just buy a portable word processor like in ye olden days if it were possible (the FreeWrite is a thing but it looks terrible).

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      No.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

What Ryzen 5000/ Intel 12th gen Laptops released or to be released. Should I look for?

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
South Korea or U.S.A up to 1.7k USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      For a good price, yes.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
This will be used as an everyday device so build quality and battery life is most importance.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
The thinner and lighter the better, but I am not picky. 2.5cm thick and 2kg would be the most I would like to carry. Will consider going over if the machine ins good
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
The larger the better, preferably 16 by 10 or taller. But not necessary.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Will mostly be used for program development in VSCode, Gnome Builder, Game development in Godot, and digital art in Krita and Inkscape. The few games I wish to play are not that difficult to drive(Rimworld, Terraria, HK SilkSong etc)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      non
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
The utmost importance is that the laptop has user swappable components. I hate having to go back to the manufacturer, wait 3 weeks, and pay hundreds of dollars due to a faulty ram chip when I could have replaced it myself in 20 minutes. Having socketed RAM and SSD is a requirement, swappable WIFI chips, speakers, ports, etc are a plus.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I have been looking at the HP Elitebook and Probook series, they have great build quality, exceptional keyboards, and most importantly, easily swappable components with documentation and parts available. I however do not know of their next-gen lineup of laptops releasing thing year.
Bonus points if the machine runs Fedora or Arch well out of the box.
