    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $600-$900 USD (US)

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Sure but prefer new for the warranty.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, build quality, battery, form factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

As long as it isn't obnoxiously bad I wouldn't notice a difference

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Around 15"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Mostly just web browsing, excel and power point for work. Some light gaming.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I like to play old games like AoE2 and maybe Minecraft on the occasion. I have an Xbox I prefer to play new games on. I would expect my laptop to run a game like AoE2 pretty well with limited stress.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Don't care about touch screen or a finger print reader. I need it to have a quality enough camera and mic for Zoom calls.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have been using a late 2020 Mac book Air since December. I am switching jobs so I need to give it back to my company. The Mac Book Air is great for what I need to do for work and I love the speed, but I do not think the price tag is worth it. I never tried gaming on it because it was a company computer. I want something that is comparable but I do not need the flashiness that drives the price up on a MacBook. The Lenovo Spring sale I saw online looks intriguing with a lot of great deals, but unfortunately I don't know where to start when shopping specs. Thank you I'm advance for any suggestions.

Looking for something cheap that can handle audio/video editing and music production (US, $200-350)

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 08:44 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $200-350

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is the big priority. Durability is good, but not important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important at all.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll be doing mostly image, audio, and video editing. Mainly running programs like Audacity, GIMP, MIDI sequencers, and a few different video editors.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Just the most basic stuff. Rhythm games, visual novels, and undemanding indies, like Undertale.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Nothing out of the ordinary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I know good laptops are hard to find in this price range, but it's just to handle the less demanding stuff while I save up for a really good desktop.

US, student looking for an all-purpose 2-in-1/convertible laptop under $1500

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 12:15 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1500 max, but prefer it to be in the $800-$1100 range or lower if possible
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
360° 2-in-1 compatible with active styluses is important, followed by performance and battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Moderate, I'll be carrying it in a backpack half of the time but I also don't want it to be flimsy
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14", but I'm fine with a 13"-15.6" range
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
At the bare minimum, I need it able to handle Clip Studio Paint, Excel spreadsheets/Office programs, and heavy browser usage. Bonus if it can execute MATLAB programs and JMP quickly. Would like it to be able to handle Netflix streaming for a decent amount of time, but it's not necessary
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Mostly older games like Dragon Age Origins/Fallout New Vegas and emulators. Would love it if it could handle Genshin or Sims 4 but that isn't necessary
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Active touchscreen is a must, bonus if it's FHD and rated well for art; prefer 512gb SSD, or at least upgradeable/compatible with WD Blue M.2 2280 SN550 500gb; needs HDMI port since I have a 2nd monitor at home; good keyboard and decent mic + camera for Zoom meetings would be nice to have
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    • I currently have a 2017 Lenovo Flex 5 14 with 8gb ram and i5 7th gen and it's been working fine so far but I'm looking to start saving up for something more up to date. Right now, I'm looking at the HP Envy x360s with 8gb ram and either the 11th gen i7 evo or the amd ryzen 7 4700U, but I would love to know any other alternatives/opinions on either choice! I'm also looking to start learning programming, ideally for data visualization/processing, so whatever specs are best for that would also be great

Macbook pro m1 13 inch or 16 inch i7 for video editing?

    Thunderbolt 3 vs AMD Ryzen

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 07:52 PM PDT

Ok so I'm planning on buying a high end laptop this summer. My main usage is productivity + photo editing. I prefer to work with external monitors and I'll need to run at least one 4k monitor in addition to the laptop screen. When it comes to tools, my work revolves around a ton of Chrome windows, Data visualization tools, large Excel sheets & data sets and I'm hoping to delve into machine learning as well. As for photo editing, it's primarily Photoshop and Lightroom Classic, but with hundreds of adjustment layers so it's intense work as well.

My main concern is whether giving up Thunderbolt 3 is worth it to go with AMD Ryzen this year (and vice versa). As Thunderbolt 3 is Intel tech, right now there's no decent AMD laptop that comes with Thunderbolt ports. And I'd very much prefer to channel all my peripherals through a single port that I can quickly plug/unplug when I need to go.

Another option that comes to mind is a M1 based MacBook Pro. But that's a completely different ecosystem and I'm not sure what kind of limitations I'll run into with the switch over. MBP supports Thunderbolt 3 so it will solve most of my issues, but I'll have to give up the gaming side of things (which is a nice to have, but not a deal breaker).

    Thoughts?

~$1,500 Work Laptop - Looking for Recos!

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 01:31 PM PDT

    Hey all -

New job gave me $1,500 to choose my own laptop. I already have a MacBook Pro and prefer to stay with Windows for my job.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • $1,500 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • No, has to be purchased new.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Ideally no touchscreen or "yoga" capabilities, I've never actually used those. This laptop would spend 80% of its time plugged into a desk and external monitor, so my biggest desire is performance.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • Not a high priority, per the above.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • 14"+

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Lots of spreadsheets and web browser tabs, my biggest hang-up with my current work laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad) is how quickly it starts to sound like an airplane taking off.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • USB-C, and a finger-print reader would be nice.

I'm likely returning my Spectre and looking for a suitable replacement.

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 01:01 AM PDT

Howdy folks. I have an HP Spectre 13 2020 that I bought at my local Best Buy a few days ago. I purchased it for $1149 plus tax (on sale, $200 off regular price), and it was the last one they had of that specific model.

I love this laptop to bits but there's one fatal flaw - there's an intermittent keyboard issue. A quick Google search reveals that this is very common with the Spectres. Right now it's working great - I'm writing this post on it with zero issues - but other times the spacebar doesn't work unless I hit it in a super specific way and every other space gets missed. Sometimes it will work flawlessly, sometimes there's no response if I hit near the edge of it (as I tend to do), sometimes there's no response unless I strike it hard dead center. Typically after "breaking it in" for a few minutes it will start to work, but if I leave it alone for long enough, when I attempt to type something it doesn't want to work.

If I can't figure out a fix for it, I will likely be returning the laptop to the store here within the next couple days and exchanging it for something else - I'm not going to wait for them to order in another Spectre that might have the same issue.

This Spectre has an Intel Evo Platform i5-1135G7, Iris Xe graphics, 8 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD, with a 4K OLED display, and came with a pen and even a leather slip cover. I can live without the pen and the case, but I would like the replacement to have similar specs to what I have now. (Well, 4K is nice, but not necessary.)

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**US$1149 (plus tax) or less. That's what I paid for the Spectre and I would like to either recoup some of the cost or get something at the same price. I'm not looking to pay any more unless it's something special.
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?**Yeah, as long as it's in good condition.

    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**2-in-1 would be nice but I can live without it. It's something that would get used quite a bit on the road or while chilling in bed or on the couch, so build quality and good battery life are big pluses. In fact, that kind of stuff is what originally drew me to the Spectre.
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?**A thin and light laptop would be nice, as I mentioned before it would get moved around a lot. Being heavy isn't a dealbreaker though, I lugged around a big ol' Thinkpad for a while.
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**13-15" - Bonus points if it's a 16:10 or 3:2, but 16:9 isn't a dealbreaker.
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**Nothing in particular. I might play some older or less demanding games if I'm traveling or something but that's about it. Most of the real demanding stuff is saved for my desktop.
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**A lot of old stuff like RCT3, SimCity 4, Age of Empires II HD, etc. Again, mostly older or less demanding stuff. Maybe a light MMO here or there. Playable at decent settings is all I really ask.
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**Reliable keyboard for sure. I really enjoy the one on the Spectre, but the spacebar that only works when it wants to ruins the experience. Otherwise I just don't want something that feels cheap.
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**I realize something like a Spectre like I have now may be a little overkill for what I do with it - internet, streaming movies and YouTube, lighter gaming, but I want something that's going to last a long time and give me a pleasant experience. I'm not opposed to another Spectre - again, aside from the spacebar issue, I love mine - I just don't want to get another one and have the same issues I'm having now. I realize it may be hard to find something comparable to the Spectre for the price I paid since I got it on sale.

    Finland - around 1000 € laptop

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 12:53 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Total budget could be extended a bit above 1 000 € (maybe to something like 1 200 €). And country of purchase would be Finland.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
No. Only purchasing from valid & authorized local vendor.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Form factor is not really relevant, quality should be at least adequate. Most of the time laptop would be sitting on desk or in dock so extra long battery life is not required. Performance is key - though preferably not excessively hot or noisy machine.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not that important due to the size of the computer. Computer would be mostly sitting on a desk or a stand.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Given the existing accessories it would have to be 15'' (or widescreen 15.6'' to be precise).
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Some photo editing (GIMP) but also gaming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Cities: Skylines is a certainly one. But other games too (as I'm not the sole user i can't give full list). Ultra-high settings are not important.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Build quality & reliability is a important. Touch-screen is more on the negative side than positive side, finger-print reader is not a positive or a negative thing, optical drive is not required. Separate numpad would be a plus.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
As said before, i would prefer something which would not be excessively loud but still useful for relatively light gaming. Minimum memory would be at 16 GB. I have considered acquiring something like Ergostand III with the new computer so any opinions on that would be welcome.

First timer high-end budget searching for a laptop that will last me through Uni

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 12:32 AM PDT

    Hey there,

I am extremely grateful to have an older sister who is planning to buy me a new laptop for university as a high school graduation gift. I was shocked when she told me I could get any laptop up to $2000 USD. Escpeacily as I have never owned anything high-end (I currently use a $300 laptop, it works well but certainly will not get me through 4 years of university). I will be an engineering student majoring in computer science and who does game development as well.

So this is my first time searching in the realm of higher-end devices therefore I am a little overwhelmed. This is not a typical request as I already have the Dell XPS 15 9500 at the top of my list. However I just would like to know if this is a good option, and I am open to any other suggestions as well.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      1) performance 2) battery 3) build quality; All important though
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Quite important however not deal-breaking.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14''-16''
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Unity game engine, maya 3d, programs a CS/engineering student would need. Games: Genshin impact / esports titles, nothing too intensive
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
good keyboard for typing, good build quality, no need for touchscreen.

Thanks for reading! (P.S : at the time of posting, I will most likely be asleep, sorry if I give late replies!)

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I'd prefer build quality (reliable and long lasting) over everything.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      not important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14in

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Really confused on a laptop as I start college in a couple of months

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 11:27 PM PDT

Okay, so I'm going to be a college student.

Already do programming and will continue to do so. Unity, Visual Studio need to run smoothly for non intensive studf. Mostly 2D in Unity so not very heavy stuff.

Also, I love CSGO, so it should run that and a couple of other titles like Valorant with 100+ fps. Witcher would be nice if it can run at ~50 fps, though I guess that's a luxury.

Budget : Max US $950 or Rs 70k. Optimum around 60k(Indian Rupees).

Any suggestions will be appreciated :)

Been looking into Legion Y540. The battery life is understandably terrible. 3 hours. Though I'm not sure if this is the battery life on heavy gaming or just on simple stuff. Like if I'm running only Chrome, will it stretch to 5-6 hours?

    Shukriya(Thanks)

Thinkpad/Inspiron or m1 Macbook Air/pro for Unity, Maya, ZBrush, under $2100 (AUD)?

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 10:35 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**$2100 AUD, but prefer to keep it low.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?**Maybe
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**Performance and longevity are more important than battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?**I don't enjoy carrying 2kg laptops so would hope to avoid it.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**Unity, Maya, Zbrush, Photoshop - I work on 3d game environments and paint textures.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**Occasional WoW + Overwatch on Low Settings.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**Screen colour quality is important. Being able to use a stylus on screen is also bonus.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**My main work is 3d modeling and painting, I don't mind what OS I use.

I'm not sure if a newer i7 with an Mx450 (2GB) is better than an older i7 with a 1650Ti(4GB) for 3D work, or if a mac's onboard GPU cores are enough to compete.

    $1359 Thinkpad E14 Gen2- 11th Gen i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 2GBMX450

    $1731 Dell Inspiron 15 1701- 10th Gen i7, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 4GB 1650Ti

    $1710 Macbook Air ( 7 Core GPU), 16GB Ram, 256GB SSD,

    $2050 Macbook Air ( 8 Core GPU), 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD,

    $2120 Macbook PRO (8 Core GPU),16GB Ram, 256GB SSD,

I can see myself buying the Thinkpad because it's the cheapest if m450X is enough to work smoothly in the 3d software, although I would be happier buying a MacBook air/pro for more $ if it's suitable since they are lighter and may last longer.

Can anyone give some advice or tell me where I'm going wrong?

    Gaming Laptop for $2000-3000 range

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 10:19 PM PDT

I'm looking for the best gaming laptop I can buy that also looks well and can fit in my backpack (so 15.6 and below). I would also prefer something that is more on the thin side, and that looks more like a conventional computer (such as a MacBook) as I'll likely also be using it in college classes as a computer science major. I plan to play a large variety of games, and would like a laptop that can last for a very long time. Looking for something with a 3070 or 3080. I am in the US

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • Not more than 80,000INR and I'll be buying in India. Likely from Amazon, so Amazon links would be appreciated!

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    • Nope

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    • Performance>Battery>Build

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    • To some extent yes, I don't want a bulky laptop since I plan on taking it to college

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • 14-15"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • Mostly Python programming through Jupyter, a whole lot of data science and visualisation through PowerBI/Tableau (priority on getting quicker startup of these apps and no lagging), lots of web browsing on Chrome (think 5-6 tabs), MS Office applications for college including advanced Excel, lots of videoconferencing using Zoom and MS Teams

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    • N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • I would love touchscreen if available at this price point, a good keyboard is a must since I'm typing a lot. I'm cool with not having fingerprint readers or anything. I use a lot of Jupyter, so things should start up quick and execute quicker.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have considered Lenovo Yoga Slim 7, Vivobook Ultra 15, Ideapad Slim 5 and an Ideapad S340

Are any of the above worth it for my needs?

Suggestions for a thin, sober gaming laptop

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 09:04 PM PDT

Hello everyone. I've been loking for a while for different laptops, watching reviews and I would like to hear your expert opinion. Thank you everyone for your time!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      1800 USD.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      I preffer not.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Very important, mostly because of being sober at workplace.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Very much. I preferr models as that looks alike to MSI Stealth, Razer Blade, Asus ROG Zephyrus G14
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15". I think it's perfect balance between enjoyable screensize and portability.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
The most tough tasks that I run is for job purposes, Virtual Machines (so I need at least 16GB of RAM, multi-core processors.), development servers, docker containers, etc.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I want a gamer laptop because I've never had one before haha I just want to at least run some AAA games with mid-quality settings. I don't know, some trendy games, COD Warzone, Rocket League, new optimized Nier:Automate, maybe.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would preffer Ryzen processors. Also, it would be great to have some nice cooling system. I don't mind not having integrated camera. I use external keyboard and mouse most of the time, so I don't mind sacrificing those.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I know maybe my requirements are quite heavy but you can sumarize it like "A thin lighweight 15 inch gaming laptop, with AMD processor"

Please help me choose a new gaming laptop!

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 08:47 PM PDT

Hello, Internet!I am in the market for a new gaming laptop. I'm currently using a Dell Inspiron Gaming (7559) that is about 5 years old now. I could use some help in choosing this new machine--I know very little about computer specs.

I use my laptop to play games (Mostly Minecraft and WoW) and mod (Minecraft) I have programs like BlockBench, GIMP, Techne, and IntelliJ, for the modding part.

I have a wish-list on Amazon where I've sort of narrowed it down to a handful, but I'd love opinions on which of these would be the best pick. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2RX0YJ602ASND?ref_=wl_share (And if you have something not listed here, please, by all means, share)

    My must-haves:

    • -a very bright, true to color screen. This is really important because I'd like continuity between what I think I'm making and what other people see, when I make my textures. What I have now is a plain LCD with the most blah, faded colors ever.
    • -a graphics card in the 2000 Nividia family, or a really well rated one if it's older than that, and the other specs are right. (Mine is currently a GTX 960 or something, I think)
    • -a ton of storage, because of all the model, texture files I make/store for modding ideas. It's a LOT.
    • -a good amount of ram (I have 16 now) so that I can run my modeling programs, my Gimp and whatever else without turning my computer into a slideshow. I Prefer 32GB, but I can live with 16, since I can always upgrade later...
    • -a numeric keypad for maths purposes (or a "10-key", as us older folks call it) Aside from using it a lot when modding, I also work in taxes, so this IS a deal-breaker for me.
    • -an RGB Backlit keyboard, because I like pretty colorful shiny things, and I've wanted one since I first saw a laptop with it.

    Other info:

    • My budget: around 1000-1100, unless it's at Amazon or Bestbuy. Then I can spend up to 1400 since I have work reward giftcards saved up.
    • I prefer new, as I want to purchase a warranty for it. (separate from budget--no need to figure it in)
    • I am not choosy as to whether it is a 15.6" or a 17" as long as it checks all the boxes.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help.

Edit: changed the statement about LCD.

Looking for a cheap "good enough" laptop

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 02:43 PM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop in the $300-$400 dollar range that would be fine for basic old school gaming (stuff like old sim city's and Rollercoaster Tycoon) some video streaming, and basic work related things like multitasking with basic image editing, conference calls, and file management. Not really looking for a chrome book, I want a decent internal storage due to nature of work and tons of images to edit and share. Not looking for anything fancy, I have a gaming laptop for that. Am I thinking too much about the processor and RAM for what I need? Most of what I see with my limited pc knowledge is at least $500 for something passable unless I got something refurbished, which I always try to avoid.

Looking for a long lasting ultrabook/ thin and light with good enough graphics ( Asus Zenbook 14 UM425IA in mind )

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      220000 LKR ( 900 - 1100 USD)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    1. Form Factor
    2. Performance
    3. Battery life
    4. Build quality
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very important because I'll be carrying it round a lot

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      14 - 15.6 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      SOLIDWORKS Pubg lite Battlefield

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Preferably 60fps with low/ medium settings

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard Good build quality No overheating issues Good Display No worries about other things asked

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am planning on buying Asus Zenbook 14 UM425IA, mainly because 1. That 67Wh battery 2. Low weight and Nice Design 3. Good Display ( I think ) 4. might play old games occasionally. 5. Required to run SOLIDWORKS sometimes

And then there's Zenbook 14 UM433IQ with MX350 but with smaller battery. Is there a big real-life batterylife difference ?

Is there any specific problems with these laptops ? I watched in a review that UM425IA freezes a lot and video editing is davinci resolve return corrupted output. If these issues are permanent and there are other issues as well, what are other good recommendations on same price point ( USD 900 - 1100 ) ?

Looking for a good windows Laptop within $700 (can be a bit over). Main specification is 1TB storage. Thank you!

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 07:36 PM PDT

I'm looking for a windows laptop that is around $700. The laptop is a gift and going to be used in business. I don't have any RAM and Chip Specifications and don't mind the laptop not being a current model. The only specification I have was 1TB storage. I personally use a MacBook, so I don't know much about the latest in Windows. Thank you in advance!
