Home Networking Ubiquiti or something else?

    Ubiquiti or something else?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 07:43 AM PDT

So long story short, built a new house full of cat6 expecting to setup a nice unifi network. pretty new to this and up til now ive been using pretty consumer netgear, tplink stuff which has been working fine. More getting into ubiquiti because I am kind of interested in networking has a hobby and have some dreams for what to do with a nice network (iot, media server, file server etc)

But the ubiquiti sub is now spooking me with the top posts in the past month just shitting on various aspects of ubiquiti. So im here because this subreddit is more neutral and ask if I should just stay with consumer stuff or hope someone can reassure me the complaints wont affect me/dont matter (lol)

was planning on UDMP + a few APs to start out

    2.5 Gigabit ethernet

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 05:58 PM PDT

So I recently got a new PC and I noticed that the motherboard (B550 Tomahawk) has a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port, I'm not too sure how this stuff works but would I need a cable that supports 2.5 Gigabit speeds to access the full 2.5 Gigabits of ethernet, and if so, which cable should I get?

The course I'm doing wants me to have a wireless adapter. I don't have one. I also don't have internet by cable and router, I only have it by smartphone and hotspot.

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:01 PM PDT

If I got a wireless adapter would it work?

Or should I just forget that part of the course?

The vast majority of the course is just on virtual machines on the one phys machine.

The course I'm doing wants me to have a wifi adapter, something like the Alfa AWUS036ACH, so I can change it's mac address and intercept packets or something.

But I think the course wants me to have cable internet and physcial router,

I have a small four port router, but the internet is always coming into my house via the smartphone hotspot.

The course guide sent me this answer:

    Hi!

For internet access a hotspot is ok but to try any of the PRE connection attacks you'll need a real router to practice, otherwise the attacks won't work as expected.

You can continue from lecture 30 and on if you don't have one. All you need is a windows virtual machine attached to the same NAT Network as kali.

But what's a PRE connection attack, and will my phys router suffice with my hotspot?

Policy-based VPN & DNS Routing, using DD-WRT router?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 03:31 PM PDT

Hello all, Can anyone give me advice how to do this:

If I have a DD-WRT flashed router, I can set up a policy-based VPN, where one computer has a static IP address and then that IP is set as going through the VPN.

The issue is, the DNS servers in the setup, still are 'serving' for the VPN user. The baseline DNS servers are ones with filtered content, but the VPN is still tied to those servers.

Is there a way to set it such that the DNS servers are also policy based? Or have I set something up incorrectly?

    Thank you

    Improving coax runs/fixing signal issues.

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 07:15 PM PDT

I've realized that theirs probably many reasons I have small disconnects or channel issues for my cable which I believe to be various issues with cables and connectors. I have used some of these cheap coax connectors like the ones in this amazon listing on some of my RG6 runs(other connectors are good PCT ones mostly, all compression) and I was wondering if they probably aren't that good and probably cause signal issues besides other things in my house. I also have some runs that are RG59 that are nearly impossible to upgrade to RG6 sadly. Splitters shouldn't be an issue since I only have one which is splitter/amp it's a PCT bypass drop amp. Also, I have Spectrum the only thing they will work on is the house signal right? not in the house?

Dual Internet Connections to - Config and Hardware recommendations

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 02:28 PM PDT

I have two internet connections to my home - Verizon FIOS and Optimum. I currently have two wireless routers - one for each network. I am thinking about bridging or load balancing the internet connectivity if possible. Default Verizon provided router plus an Orbi (non dual WAN) router for the Optimum connection.

I am looking to get away from two wireless networks to load balance the internet connections OR bridge the networks so that devices on either network can talk to each other. Special requirements:

    1. Optimum apps only work when connected to the Optimum broadband network
    2. XBox devices which are sensitive to double NAT scenarios
    3. The ability to print from one wireless network to the devices on the other wireless network

I am assuming Option one is to load balance both WAN connections - but fear Double NAT scenarios plus breaking the Optimum apps.

other option is to take existing configuration and bridge the wireless networks so devices can talk to each other locally. Allows mobile devices including Optimum to work seamlessly with TV's. Might require DNS tricks?

My ISP offered me a real IP with a new data package. What does real IP mean here?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:06 PM PDT

    Hi,

Basically I was using a internet package from our ISP (8 Mbps at a certain cash per month). Yesterday, an ISP sales rep called me and said that with a little increase in my monthly internet payment, they can provide me with a new package (30 Mbps) and additionally a "real IP".

I used to think that "real IP" are the static IP or the public IP addresses, last block of which ran out from APNIC back in 2012. Also, these static IP addresses are expensive to lease and are used by servers because DNS needs to map these addresses.

So what does my ISP mean when they say that they will provide me with a "real IP" ? I assume my understanding of the above definition of real IP is wrong. But then again, all my PC/phones at home are connected to a TP-Link Wifi router which creates a Private Class - C (192.168.0.x) network. So even if they provide me with a "real IP", will I be able to use that real IP eventually since my PC will need to connect to the router at first to connect to next hops and thus internet?

Unfortunately, the sales rep couldn't say more about what he means.

Thanks in advance , stay safe.

    2019 MacBook Pro WiFi Instability

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:15 PM PDT

I have a basic network set up using OPNsense as the router / firewall, and a UniFi switch and nanoHD WiFi access point. I have the WiFi set up as follows:

    • 2.4GHz - VHT20, Auto channel, High transmit power
    • 5GHz - VHT80, Auto channel, Medium transmit power

I am broadcasting two VLANs - the main one our devices use, and one specifically for IoT devices. We're in an RV in a campground, so there aren't many strong WiFi networks around us, and I'm less than 20ft from the nanoHD.

Everything works great....except on my MacBook Pro 13". For some reason, about once per day, it just seems to lose connectivity - or at least, the connectivity (LAN and WAN) is seriously degraded. My MacBook is usually connected to AC power. It still shows as being connected, but web pages don't load and pings show serious packet loss, for example:

    PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8): 56 data bytes Request timeout for icmp_seq 0 Request timeout for icmp_seq 1 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=2 ttl=115 time=34.698 ms Request timeout for icmp_seq 3 Request timeout for icmp_seq 4 Request timeout for icmp_seq 5 Request timeout for icmp_seq 6 Request timeout for icmp_seq 7 Request timeout for icmp_seq 8 Request timeout for icmp_seq 9 Request timeout for icmp_seq 10 Request timeout for icmp_seq 11 Request timeout for icmp_seq 12 Request timeout for icmp_seq 13 Request timeout for icmp_seq 14 Request timeout for icmp_seq 15 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=16 ttl=115 time=38.739 ms 64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=17 ttl=115 time=30.036 ms Request timeout for icmp_seq 18 Request timeout for icmp_seq 19 Request timeout for icmp_seq 20

If I disable the WiFi on my MacBook and then re-enable it, everything works fine again. No other devices have this issue. If, using a different device, I connect to my UniFi controller, it shows my MacBook as having a degraded experience - just now it was 69/100. Other devices looked OK.

Yesterday I completely erased and re-installed my MacBook hoping that might fix it, but it's just happened again. I turned the WiFi on my MacBook off and on and it's working fine again. It shows me as connected to 5GHz on channel 153 @ 80MHz. My RSSI is -64dBm and the noise is -94dBm, and the transmit rate is 1,300Mbps on 802.11ac.

Any ideas on what might be causing this and / or what I can do to debug the issue further next time it happens?

Help with understanding of DNS registers

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 08:40 PM PDT

    Hi!

I have an old computer in where I host a couple things (game servers,a webpage...) and now I'm triying to host my own mail server.

I have set it up but I can't send or receive mails and I think probably has to be with the DNS registers.

for what I can see is that I should make an MX register that points to some subdomain of my domain (for EX mail.mydomain.com) and then I have to make an A register for that subdomain pointing to my router's WAN ip

what I can't understand is that if I have already configured mydomain.com pointing to my router

¿what's the point of using a subdomain like mail.mydomain.com and not just point the MX register to mydomain.com that is already pointing to my domain?

Setting up honeypot outside of the firewall

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 08:36 PM PDT

    Hi Folks,

I couldnt find a better place to ask this question.
At this moment I am setting up a homelab with Tpot Honeypot.
I am finished with the setup and the next topic of the instruction is System Placement https://github.com/telekom-security/tpotce#system-placement

Its tells you to place the IP and port of Tpot externally from your firewall.
I have opened my ATT router settings website but don't know where to navigate from there.
The idea is for the honeypot to be externally facing and not my entire system.

If anyone can help me that would be great!

    Hacked Via MoCA

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 08:33 PM PDT

So recently I have been hacked ony home router. City police are giving me the run around and Xfintiy confirmed the hack. They are using MoCA to connect. Couple additional facts: my apartment is in a house that has been split into 6 units. The outside cable box attached to the house looks like a squid was shoved in a box with the legs out. My question is this: If I buy a MoCA filter and hook it up to the cable line inside my apartment where my router is will that work the same as where the tech was suposoed to install a filter properly? There is a tech coming out Friday 3/26 to run tests on the line and pinpoint the location. (Only took me a week of yelling at them to send someone to fix this) thanks in advance for the help. [Edit] They are also using ARP Spoofing in the hacks. I have added MAC filters

    Help with Dual-Wan Home Setup

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:31 PM PDT

Hello everyone. I have an inquiry for those of you who might have experience with dual wan setups. I have two VDSL connections (around 25Mbit/s each), and I want to have a single LAN interface for them. For around a year, my solution has been that of a TP-Link TL-R470T+, a cheap load balancer which did the job decently; for a Wi-Fi connection, I attached a router-WiFi combo I had, in AP-mode. Unfortunately, as lately my dear load-balancing router has started to have some problem, e.g. random crashes in the middle of the day.
This dual-wan setup was also no in itself perfect, e.g. problems when changing from 5GHz to 2GHz, and sometimes I would also experience some heavy lag, especially during online games (I am not gamer, but I do enjoy a game or two, especially during this weird times). Just to add, since my house if quite old and, in most places, there is no possibility of ethernet connections, 99% of my gadgets must rely on WiFi.

Since I am no expert, I wanted to ask all of you for some suggestions as to a good upgrade/setup that I might try.

[As a note, I have recently bought a new ASUS Router RT-AX82U, which is a combo router - AP and which allows a very basic dual-wan setup, but I have not been to pleased with the very limited amount of settings I can touch (and also the fact all "cool" features of the router, like adaptive QoS, are disabled in balancing mode).]

Gigabit Fiber Internet Landlord Provided No Access to the Main Router

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 08:16 PM PDT

I have a gigabit fiber optic internet that is provided by the landlord in my condo. I do not have access to the main router of the building. The internet connection in my condo is an ethernet cable that connects to small switch https://imgur.com/a/BV0Ah2t -> enterprise switch -> then finally an enterprise router. 'Internet provider' told me that in order to not get double NAT, I should setup my current router in bridge mode/AP mode.

I want to put a router that will act as a firewall between the ethernet from the landlord's router and my devices. VLAN is being implemented according to them but I'd like to do this for my own peace of mind.

I want to purchase the ubiquity ER-X router then a couple of OMADA TP link APs. From my research looks like the ER-X max throughput is not gigabit? If I put this is in bridge mode will that matter? Basically I just want the router to act as a firewall then the enterprise router of the landlord will do the NAT/routing. Will I still get the speed that I am getting now if I set it up this way? I am a noob in networking so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Alternative to ForceBindIP/NetRouteView for Windows 10 that actually works?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 02:17 PM PDT

Hey there guys. I own 2 internet connections, one really fast fiber, but unfortunately in our country we have data limits and the Fiber is data limitted. I use the Fiber for gaming because of the low latency that it provides. I also have another more reasonably priced connection that gives me a lot of internet usage, but it is not optimal for gaming.

Im trying to use the Fiber for gaming which is my LAN, and the wifi for browsing, discord etc.

I know about the Metric setting through the IPV4 settings in Windows, and doesnt matter what I do, all my applications launch through the lowest metric setting.

Ive tried using ForceBindIP, and it just does not work. No errors, no logs, just launches an application, and it defaults to the lowest metric value which is my Fiber connection.

The program Im trialling this mostly is Discord. When I set my wifi as my lowest metric connection and launch the program, then yes Discord/Browsers do work through the wifi. But I want to launch my game through my LAN, so the moment I switch the metric of my LAN to the lowest value, my browser immediately picks up on that and uses that connection instead, and so does Discord.

Does anyone know of a way to FORCE applications to commit to and use one connection? I've heard that NetRouteView works, but apparently its a hassle to setup and for someone who has no networking knowledge or how routes work, is there anyone here who knows if it works and could walk me through it?

I've tried ForceBindIP, ForceBindIP GUI, BindIP from GitHub etc.

    Thanks in advance!

Tips to get a stable wi-fi connection

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 03:07 AM PDT

Hi everyone. I'm using GeForce Now to stream games on my MacBook, and so far my only issue is that when I'm on wifi, GFN tells me every minute or so that I have a spotty wifi connection, and I get FPS drops for 2-3 seconds. I've looked everywhere for that and I only see tips to make your wifi faster - which I definitely do not need, as I get 400-500 mbps on the 5 GHz band. But I'd still like to make my wifi more stable, as using an ethernet cable, while being the easiest and quickest solution is quite cumbersome and really ruins the whole 'mobile' concept of a laptop. Is my issue typical ? Would you guys have any tips and/or fixes ? I use a Xiaomi 4A Gigabit router, for info. Thanks in advance.

After reset, Asus AC88U becomes gradually slower after reboot

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:08 PM PDT

Today my ISP kept cutting off the WAN connection. Phoned them, and they apologized that they had not reset our connection after their maintenance.

They fixed it, and then it started happening again.

The third call to the ISP, we got the dumbest of the three, who told us that our router was at fault, and to reset it.

I did, and it took hours to try and restore the settings, since I dared not load a saved setting that might trigger the WAN cut-off again.

The WAN failures stopped, but now the whole network is slow. When I reboot the router, it becomes fast again. Then, in a short time, it slows down.

Going to a new web-page, I now notice that 'transferring data from router.asus.com' or something similar appears, but only when it is slow, not immediately after the reboot.

I disabled AI protection, but apart from that, as best I can remember, I have the same settings as before.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

My gateway won't connect to some sites until I reset it 10+ times.

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 07:34 PM PDT

I have an ARRIS BGW210-700. Att internet. I could have no issues for weeks, but sometimes I'll wake up and I can't connect to seemingly random sites. Forums, youtube, my company's website (even the IT help page not inside their network).

If I reset my router anywhere from 5-10+ times, I can connect to everything I need again. The issue might come back tomorrow, it could be another 2 weeks. I have no idea. Is there some kind of nightly process that gateway's have that could cause the issue?

It's probably related, but I also can't use my smart thermostat or printer. My printer will say it's connected to the network, and I can see the device from my computer, but I can never actually truly get a connection between them to print. As for my thermostat, it just fails to work at all.

How do I begin to diagnose these? Why does resetting it 10 times solve the issue? I know it's on my network and not the company's fault.

Is there something I can do in 192.168.1.254 to just... let me use my devices?

What could make a coax attenuator work less desirable than a splitter, in terms of attenuation?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 03:45 PM PDT

My cable plan is Internet only, the cable went straight from the Point of Entry(POE) to my modem. No MoCA or TV. Signal coming from the pole is pretty hot(+15dBmV), therefore some kind of attenuation is needed. I tried two combinations:

    • 2-way splitter(-3.5db). Splitter is grounded on POE.

With the other port terminated, it lower my downstream power to an acceptable level. But it also bump up my upstream power very close to the spec limits(48-51dBmV with 4 channel bonding), and sometimes force my modem to fallback to 1 channel, cause occasional short outage(once every one or two days and usually last a minute or two).

    • -6db in line Forward Path Attenuator(bought from amazon) + ground block. Ground block is grounded on POE

It successfully lower the downstream power as well as leave the upstream power untouched, as advertised. However it also introduced a periodically high packet loss. It happens once every few hours and last from seconds to hours. When that happened the power of all upstream channels are maxed at 51dBmV, and the upload speed is affected badly(download seems okay). Reboot the modem isn't helping but unplug and replug the coax cable from the modem would resolve the packet loss issue temporary.

In all cases the cable is properly grounded to the house AC ground on POE(checked with multimeter). The fitting is tighten with tool. All cable line has been recently replaced. Is this attenuator defected, or attenuator is just not suitable for this job?

Is there a more simple OS than PfSense?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 03:44 PM PDT

Did I misunderstand how AI mesh works?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2021 03:23 PM PDT

I've bought 5 m5 deco units for a 3k sq ft 2 story house. We have one deco that is connected to the modem through ethernet and wireless backhaul among the rest of them.

I have one room in the house that doesn't get good signal due to the distance and obstacles from the main router so I was hoping we would get the connection like:

Main deco router -> intermediate node -> room with bad reception 1.

Instead it looks like all the nodes connect directly to the main deco router. I think I would get overall better network service if I could direct traffic through the intermediate node but then I realized I probably don't understand how this works.

Combining Router and Satellites on Ethernet Network.

I have a TP-Link A7 Router currently in my home telco closet. From there I have Cat5e feeds to ever wall of my house. I am wondering if I can use the A7 as the primary router with 4 ethernet ports and then distribute an ethernet connection to three different locations in the house to connect the M5 devices. If that works, I am guessing that I will get significantly more coverage at higher speed than using the WiFi feature. I understand that the Mesh protocol for Deco is different than for the A7 so not sure if it is compatible. Tried to get this info from TP-Link support but not sure they completely understood what I want to accomplish. Can anyone help? Thanks.
